    At 8:32 you mentioned the Cam Link supporting YUY2, can you record in 4:4:4 using that format? I did some looking and found that YUY2 supports 4:2:2, not quite as good as 4:4:4 but I guess that's better than nothing. In OBS Studio's settings under "Advanced" there doesn't seem to be an option to record in 4:2:2, these are the colour formats that I see:
    • NV12 (8-bit, 4:2:0, 2 planes)
    • I420 (8-bit, 4:2:0, 3 planes)
    • I444 (8-bit, 4:4:4, 3 planes)
    • PO10 (10-bit, 4:2:0, 2 planes)
    • IO10 (10-bit, 4:2:0, 3 planes)
    • RGB (8-bit)
    I did try recording with I444 which seems to work, if that's the only way to record 4:2:2. Is there something I'm missing or is this my only option?
    Edit: Also, what do the number of planes mean? They have either 2 or 3 but I'm not entirely sure what they're for.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cam link doesn’t support 444/RGB, no. Just YUY2 at 1080p, NV12 at 4k

    • @LaminGaming
      @LaminGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EposVox Ah okay thanks for clarifying! So is YUY2 422? I'm assuming I'd have to record in 444 anyway, as OBS doesn't allow me to record in 422, only 420 or 444. Here's the list of the colour formats again:
      • NV12 (8-bit, 4:2:0, 2 planes)
      • I420 (8-bit, 4:2:0, 3 planes)
      • I444 (8-bit, 4:4:4, 3 planes)
      • PO10 (10-bit, 4:2:0, 2 planes)
      • IO10 (10-bit, 4:2:0, 3 planes)
      • RGB (8-bit)

    As someone who literally just got a RetroTINK 2X Pro w/ S-Video cables for his N64 specifically to stream it on Twitch, this video is indispensable! I had my layout and everything set up but I was scaling willy nilly. I now have a proper 2x interger scale with area scale filtering and edited my layout to match. I know it doesn’t matter as much with 3D games but the those old polys are sharp enough to see when someone is doing it right or wrong! Thanks for the information, can’t wait for part 2!

    The Transformation-Scaling options on OBS sources can be so handy! We had a pixelated webcam, but only when scaled down! Put it to bilinear - no problems now. Ofc it's nothing you wanna have on retro games (to blurry).

  • @BambooShadow
    @BambooShadow 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cheapest retro gaming setup for me was a super famicom with decent shielded s-video cables into a passive splitter. From there going into a DVD ezmaker7 and into my crt (or retrotink/odv hdmi, when you wanna play on a flatscreen). The upgrade from svideo to RGB/component is really minor, and svideo with well shielded cables yields great results.

    I got a Datapath VisionRGB E1s and it's amazing with the right settings and cables it almost looks like you're running an emulator. But it does a few problems.
    - Prohibitively expensive new, prices makes Magewell cards look cheap. So you have to buy one used.
    - Supports only RGB signals (analogue or digital) and YPbPr (component)
    - Requires fine tuning per device (retro console or PC). Replacements for the official driver tools such as the open source VCS by Tarpeeksi Hyvae Soft helps with this a lot as you can save profiles and such.
    - No sound support requiring a separate line in.
    So what do you get from all this trouble?
    - Crisp almost emulator like capture
    - 24-bit colour depth (8:8:8)
    - Supports up to 1920x1200 60fps and pretty much any weird resolution you'd like below that.
    I got this odd issue with some consoles with diagonal lines going across the screen. I suspect this is because of sketchy SCART cables though.

    Hey EposVox, in Taran's videos he mentioned how what he's done to achieve good results is to upscale as much as he can using nearest neighbor, *and then* to use a more typical scaling method to get the picture to scale the rest of the way. I wonder, would this work within OBS? Could you set up a 2x scale on your capture card in one scene for just your gameplay capture, then add that scene as a source to your streaming scene, and scale it with lanczos scaling?

    • @DarkAriesKnight
      @DarkAriesKnight 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is literally Area scaling. Nearest as close as possible (generally overshoot), then bilinear downscale to fit. This video missed the whole point of using area scaling and treated it as if it was nearest neighbour/point.

    If you are recording gameplay for TH-cam, bitrate is also important to check on. All games output at different bitrates. Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't support 480p 60fps videos, so you will have to upscale them to 720p 60fps using video editing software while keeping bitrate and resolution in mind.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EposVox Doesn't bitrate depend on the colors presented in the games? Maybe I'm thinking about the video recorded itself

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's color palette (16-bit vs 8-bit vs 32-bit etc) that has bit in the name, but all games send uncompressed feeds out to TV/etc.
      The more action and color in a scene does require more bitrate to maintain quality, but that's not really something you control. In a CBR stream it all stays the same bitrate on Twitch/TH-cam/etc.

    Great video. I've never messed around with the Retrotink (it's the only popular scaling solution I don't have in my set up, but I do have the Raspberry Pi HAT so I can say Mike Chi does great work). I use a Datapath card and I gotta say, the amount of work it took to get all my presets made in VCS (I have about 18 of them made) wasn’t nearly as daunting as I thought it was going to be. Would have taken even less time if I had had a way to load the 240p Test Suite onto my consoles and could use the checkerboard to key in phase.
    It's tomayto/tomahto really and either option results in a good image. The real magic happens after you’re outputting a clean image to OBS and you scale it properly over there.
    Looking forward to Part 2.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The real magic happens after you’re outputting a clean image to OBS and you scale it properly over there." Yep! That's why I wanted to focus on it first, any capture method will be made moot without proper scaling.

    Hey profe, I have an issue, I love scanlines and they look great on my side, but when I record or stream a game with scanlines it looks horrendous so I have to take them out entirely, but is no fun for me then. Is there a way to make them work on stream? I don't think is possible because the encoding process obliterates the original input signal but maybe you know some workaround, I think it could be a good idea for another video.

    What is the best setting for color accuracy? With retro games from era where 640x480 was norm you can find lines that are just 1 px wide. But all coloring seems to go nuts with it even if you don't scale. Like I have 1 px wide red line on top of blue background and then in recording I have that line with at least 5 different shades of red ranging from almost grayscale to overblown red. How do I fix that? Should I upscale it ? And is it important how I upscale it? For example there is also way to scale it from settings > video > Output (scaled) resolution. PS in my case it's PC so I don't use any capture hardware.

      Because the 444 helps immensely with upscaling footage. It's fine that your final delivery is 420 but you get noticeably worse results upscaling 420 source by so much than you do with 444 source. Especially for 2d/pixel art based games where the hard color edges really matter

    I’ve looked through most your videos. I haven’t seen one for how to properly hook up goxlr to stream on obs with all Consoles. PS4 has a fixable solution, PS3 requires a splitter to confuse the anti piracy software, Xbox 360 seems to require no added problems while Xbox One proves to be the worst. On Xbox One, you can’t stream the game chat audio and communicate with game chat at the same time. You can stream the game chat and your microphone and the stream would be none the wiser, but you can’t communicate with game chat to relay info to teammates. The Xbox won’t read the audio capture card trick used to be able to hook up goxlr to ps4. And the only way to hear Party Chat is to use the Xbox app on pc. But that app doesn’t have that game chat option. I avoid streaming online multiplayer games on Xbox because of this issue. I’ve googled the problem and hit up reddit, scoured every TH-cam video related to goxlr with consoles and I’ve found nothing.
    Please make a video on goxlr/obs/console streaming.

    Now that I know that there's a way better option than running my old Elgato Game Capture HD's HDMI passthrough into my internal capture card, I'm hyped. Losing so much quality through that janky workaround that I ended up getting into emulation and ripping my discs instead.

    Don't go on ultra cheap S-video cables, or those with Composite and S-video cables, most of the cheap ones wil give you a really nasty checkerboard pattern. All my setup is S-video based and I capture direct with a Diamond VC-500. Is was a really cheap setup, I paid 30 bucks for the capture card, but it works for me, the only problem I have is with framerates, because it is kinda wonky sometimes, but for what I use, speedruns and a casual livestream for the price I can't get any better.

    Proper answer would be the Framemeister
    but most people would just use an emulator, especially for handheld retro games

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your answer of "proper" - most people would not consider the FM the "proper" way to go over a line doubler like RetroTINK/OSSC and it's hard to recommend the FM (as a FM user) with it no longer being made and being so expensive.

So if you did watch the whole video? You got the answers you were looking for and your time was not wasted.

      Emulation brings its own set of problems and inaccuracies, and plenty of us have existing game collections we want to play, or prefer to play on original hardware, or want to also play on CRTs as per the intro and stream.
