19:48 I think this was a bit of a mistake in sideboarding. The Anointed Peacekeeper is extremely good against this matchup in particular. Besides the fact that Jamin is playing multiples of several creatures there are a lot of them with activated abilities. I would have kept peacekeeper and brought in 1 thalia for some other card, maybe tag out the thought knot seer considering peacekeeper basically does his same thing, even better for less mana and less specific mana.
Just found you guys a couple of days ago, been binging hard on all your videos while at work. Keep it up this channel and the presentation are both awesome
@33:48 i believe you would only get either the counters on the ozolith or the counters on a creature with the apprentice's trigger, not both. They both refer to the specific counters being moved, if one of them said like "put that many counters" instead of "put those counters" then you could do what you did
Not that it would have mattered, but shouldn’t the Apprentice enter with 4 +1/+1 counters at 33:30 ? It triggers itself, which is increased to 2 by Hardened Scales, and the Metallic Mimic triggers separately, which also goes to 2 from Hardened Scales. Honestly not sure if it is 4 though, since Mimic is worded weirdly so it might be a replacement effect? It’s honestly been so long since I’ve played in paper I can’t even remember how it should work lol
Carl and Jamin let’s go! I’m sad I missed the post about the decklist I was so hype to add my decklist for mono red devotion for pioneer. I’ll keep an eye out for the community posts next time. Also two great fringe deck picks this time best mtg content on TH-cam for sure
@@CardmarketMagic Wait where do we post the deck ideas? I have a kind of spicy Modern list; it's Shrines but only in Rakdos and it utilizes Karn the Great Creator to tutor Mirror Box out of the sideboard to allow you to play multiples of the same Shrine, specifically relying most on the red 3 mana damage to any target in upkeep Shrine as well as the black 2 mana drain your opponent Shrine. The rest of the deck is Rakdos control; but Mirror Box can also buff Kroxa and having multiple "stupid monkey" Ragavans in play. Already good cards anyway but they get buffed from the Box too.
Love seeing all these deck brews, as a deck builder who often finds my self way to deep in the tank I love getting to see what other people are working on! Keep them coming!
Just wanted to clarify something about Hushbringer Vs the Hardened Scales deck. None of the abilities of his creatures are ETB abilities, they're entering *with* those counters. I understand it stops Hangarback and Iron Apprentice from using their ability when they die, but they don't do anything else against any of his creatures. In fact, it doesn't even stop The Ozolith from triggering since The Ozolith doesn't specifically say "Whenever a creature dies," it is distinct in saying "whenever a creature leaves the battlefield," which does include dying. I played Hardened Scales in Modern for a couple years and I've seen people try this sort of sideboard tech before, but ETB and Enters With are two mostly different things. For those that are confused: Hushbringer stops triggered abilities that trigger when a creature enters the battlefield. If the ability of creatures such as Hangarback Walker were triggered abilities, there would be a brief second when the creature is on the field with zero counters while the ability is on the stack, and it would die immediately as it is a 0/0. Hangarback doesn't use the stack and cannot be responded to. The Hushbringer entry on Gatherer includes this ruling as well. No criticism at all though! It's a little counterintuitive and I've definitely won some games because of that distinction. Magic's hard man. For more information, the Hushbringer entry: gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hushbringer
I had so many thoughts while watching this video: WOW YOU PICKED MY DECK! It also won somehow? Against a sheoldred and a thoughtseize? @@jadenmenezes5292 Personally I'd probably trade it out for either Stonecoil Serpent or Gingerbrute or Ozolith, the Shattered Spire, but I think Salvager's fine if you like it. Clackbrige Troll! I had so much fun with it in standard with a jank Dimir colored brew that also played Protean Thaumaturge. The plan was to play troll and transform thaumaturges into more trolls that aren't re-entering the battlefield and so the opponent doesn't get any more goats. Meanwhile, Mogis's Favor and Mire's Grasp, backed by Hateful Eidolon and Lurrus, could remove goats on the cheap and provide the thaumaturge triggers. Agadeem's Awakening was also in the deck, so in a long game the dream was to return from the graveyard to the battlefield: (1) Hateful Eidolon, (2) Protean Thaumaturge, (3) Lurrus of the Dream Den, (4) Nightmare Shephard, and (5) Clackbridge Troll. I mean it wasn't Tier 1 or anything, but I was glad to make a deck that won some games and was _nothing like_ what anybody else was doing.
I’ve only just been getting into watching modern games. I play standard on arena, but with the LoTR set out, I’ve been wanting to use those cards. Watching stuff like this helps me know what cards to look for in older sets. Please keep doing this! Is newer players thank you!
To note, Hushbringer wouldn't have helped at all against the Hardened Scales deck. Not a single card in it triggers from ETB; many cards have "That creature enters with n +1/+1 counters" and some have "As [CARDNAME] enters the battlefield," but those are not triggered abilities and thus Hushbringer wouldn't stop them. The only card with an ability that triggers from plays is Patchwork Automaton, which is a cast trigger rather than an ETB trigger and wasn't played in game 1 anyway.

Sybdicate Trafficker actually helped with me with the Hour of Devastation Gameday with an Orzhov Aristocrats. Turns out triggering Hidden Stock pile by sac'ing a servo, only to give your creature indestructible and make it bigger, then proceeding to get your servo back is good.
Fun looking pair of decks squaring off. The death and taxes deck missed lethal in game one (missed life loss plus playing 2nd thought-knot would have lead to exact lethal) but was still some good plays of magic.
Great video and great content in general. Just a sidenote - You both seemed baffled by the Clackbridge Troll. If used alongside the Hushbringer (Or a Strict Proctor), you negate the most glaring downside of the troll. The opponent will get no goats and have to sac their prized creatures. Might not have mattered that much in this match-up, with Ozolith shenanigans, but against an opponent with a small board presence, it will hurt :)

Hushbringer actually does very little against Jamin's deck. Hangarbackwalker doesnt have a trigger putting the counters on, and meanwhile its actively hurting your own Thought knot seer
How does the interaction with iron master and the ozoloith works ? Why does he effectively conjure extra counters onto both a creature and the ozolith ? They both say move not place so those two counters should go either place no ? Not both places
You guys really look like you're having fun! 😄 Btw loving the blue background of the room you're always in. Did I understand correctly you guys actually pause the game to make those additional comments about your thought processes? 😯 The interview comment made me think that. I always reconed those were done after the match.
I play Scales in Modern and there have been quite a few times when I've lost because I played it too safe. Sometimes you just gotta put a lot of counters on a thing and ask the opp if they have an answer.
does hardened scales / constrictor actually affect the number of counters on a creature when it enters the battlefield? because the effect reads "enters the battlefield with" and not "put counters on it"
Question about the Ozolith... It says that when a creature you control dies, put THOSE counters onto the Ozolith. The creature you sacrificed also says that when it is sacrificed, put THOSE counters onto another creature. The way it was played, you put counters on the Thopter and the Ozolith. Is that correct? How do those two triggers resolve? Seems like you got extra counters out of it.
Here's what the Gatherer says: The Ozolith’s first ability doesn’t move counters off the creature that’s left the battlefield. Instead, it causes you to put a number of counters of each kind of counter that was on that creature onto The Ozolith. Notably, if you somehow control a second The Ozolith, each one will receive the same number and kinds of counters that were on the creature that left the battlefield. Similarly, if the creature has an ability that triggers when it leaves the battlefield that refers to the number of counters it had, that ability will use the number of counters that were on the permanent, even if The Ozolith’s first ability resolves first. TLDR: "Those counters" means "this kind and amount of counters", not "these very specific counters" -Jamin

Hey guys, please play some more Pioneer. I'm keen to see how the Abzan Greasefang deck goes in to some of the other decks, in particular creativity, 4 colour enchantments etc.
I would like to see you play a gates deck. Mana is just gates plus some sweepers and ramp with mazes end as win or just gatecrasher rams with casual 11/11 late game.
Oof, that game one with the missed sheoldred trigger and could've played the thought knot seer and if he killed it on attacks, Jamin would've died to sheoldred trigger
Maybe I am crazy but I really feel like Hangarback Walker may have been the better target for the two mana additional tax over the snake. I know he had two in the hand but taxing not only the card itself but the activated ability seems quite good, as three mana and 1 mana is a massive difference. I don't know if that would have fundamentally shifted the game in Carl's favor but it seemed like the better target. Also the best counter to Hardened Scales seems to be lots and lots of removal. That game had so little removal it was brutal.
My teain of thought was that if I target the Hangarback Walker, then he gets to cast snakes until he has the mana for the walker and then even at X=0 it comes in with 3 counters. Every snake reduces the cost of the walker by 2
@@CardmarketMagic Oh yikes fair point, I totally missed mana cost reduction on the snakes affecting Hangarback Walker's mana cost. That was the correct move then for sure.

I think of all the shows I've watched this is my favorite overlay for the matches.
Super fun video! I love seeing unique brews - and you two play them!
Just thought to suggest Carl to play mono black burn again as it is awesome, keep doing your thing as your content is great.
I love your duels, especially with the brews. Keep it up guys!!!!
Another great video! always cool to see the community engagement, and some great games!
25:30 why the creatures doesn’t enter the battlefield tapped
Loved those games and decks! Would of loved to see more. Maybe a 3 out of 5 with 2 non sideboarded games?
love the content! keep up these brew games, they’re so fun to watch 👍
15:30 you forgot to lose 2 life for that draw, doesnt change anything though
I think with the recent making of Oathbreaker as an official format, it would be cool to see you guys play Oathbreaker!
Going along with this, I'm just gonna drop my deck here to see if it piques the interests of any of the guys

Ooooh a commander deck! I'll put this aside for our commander game with our next guest! (In case we play a format in which this works) :)
Great deck lists to go for a match up. Love it guys!!!
4:33 It is wrong not to play thoughtseize, no? You said you dont have 2 drops, so next turn it would be land + tapped land and you wouldt miss on anything, yet get the benefit of thoughtseize 1st turn
Jamin and Carl are just so much fun to watch play, looking forward for more
Hushbringer actually does very little against Jamin's deck.
I feel Jamin missed that he can play Metallic Mimic into Hangarback Walker for 0 in game one.
I cant wait to watch this video!!! AND WITH BOTH CARL AND JARMIN!!!!!! lets go!!!
I love the decks, love the players and the quality of the content.
15:37, drawing a card loses you 2 life. Sheoldred babyyyy
any idea what's the name of the music that starts at 24:54?
"Based on the fact that you hit the ground running?"
Immediately smashed the like button
You guys really look like you're having fun! 😄 Btw loving the blue background of the room you're always in. Did I understand correctly you guys actually pause the game to make those additional comments about your thought processes? 😯 The interview comment made me think that. I always reconed those were done after the match.
Great content!
Looking forward to more, regardless of what it is!
Maybe a couple of spicy control/combo decks.
am I crazy? Why did he lose 8 life at 14:33 when sheoldred is only a 4/5? I'm guessing he thought it may have been the swampwalk sheoldred?
He went from 12 to 8, which is 4 damage :)
At 15:30 isnt he supposed to lose 2 life and go to 4 when he drew a card?
I am a simple man. I see Eldrazi, I like.
I love this kind of content, i was just expecting MonoRed Eldrazi
My suggestion for a Modern challenge, just because it's decks I enjoy, would be Eternal Command vs. Sneak and Show. Thanks!
Oh boy, that time of the week again!
15:32 Jamin woukd have lost 2 life from the Thought-Knot Seer
this is the best magic channel there is!
That's so kind of you to say! 😃
I play Scales in Modern and there have been quite a few times when I've lost because I played it too safe. Sometimes you just gotta put a lot of counters on a thing and ask the opp if they have an answer.
does hardened scales / constrictor actually affect the number of counters on a creature when it enters the battlefield? because the effect reads "enters the battlefield with" and not "put counters on it"
Yes it does :) it's been a common rules interaction many times in magic's history
Love me some brew decks and especially in the pioneer format
these paper magic vids are real good
Question about the Ozolith...
Here's what the Gatherer says:
The Ozolith’s first ability doesn’t move counters off the creature that’s left the battlefield.
TLDR: "Those counters" means "this kind and amount of counters", not "these very specific counters"
-Jamin
@@CardmarketMagic thanks for the explanation :D
Watching the feature matches makes me wish I wasn't so bad at deck building for 60s. I just never know how much to put in of what just how to more fine tune it
We don't either, we usually start with 4 of each cars and then cut and add depending on how well the cards perform in our test games :) that's why we like when viewers submit decks, it saves us so much time!
This was really fun to watch!
Great content and great editing too!
i dont know if it was already a feature match but i would love to see a battle of wits mirror!
🤣 I'll add it to the list but I don't know if we are brave enough
i thought this was a modern throwback vid at first
It could! These decks were once modern playable :)
Cool decks. They both look fun to play!
Hey guys, please play some more Pioneer.
I'm keen to see how the Abzan Greasefang deck goes in to some of the other decks, in particular creativity, 4 colour enchantments etc.
that D&T Deck is very spicy. might try it out someday.
I feel like only one of the subscriber got the memo about the "wildest brew" prompt. It’s like a bunch of pioneer bomb against Defiant Salvager.
Fun stuff! I say keep doing more!
