I got ultrasonic cleaner 26l capacity.It is great for radiators,wheels,plastic tanks,even fuel tanks half-half turning.You will be amazed how great they comes up after treatment.Best Regards Niko London.

Lovng these videos. I just bought a 2000 Legend TT with 45k on it for my Girlfriend for $3800 cad, an it is mint always stored inside condition. Good job saving the rad. when doing a job like this and drilling a hole with a depth that's critical I get a short piece of bar and drill a hole through the centre, cut to a length with the drill ib the chuck protruding to the depth I want to drill when the bar is against the chuck jaws. Hope that makes sense. As I'm sure you've experienced when a drill breaks through it can pull you in. It's worked for me especially on sheet metal where it has saved drills from breaking many times.
Years ago I made a set of collars 12mm long in various diameters with a grub screw to lock them onto the drill bit the depth I want to drill. An hour turn's them out.
I should add I also use left-hand drill bits, more time than not it picks the broken stud out and not expensive these days. It's good your using a centre drill for starting, less chance of wandering but be careful you don't break that tip in the screw, not nice, on hard screws or stainless I only use it for spotting unless in the lathe.
Cheers mate, softly softly on this one, little aluminium blind caps and probably a mm of metal between my drill bit and the coolant! ... and you can buy those grub screw collars, but like you, I'd rather make mine as I need them!

Got home from about an hours steady ride, and then noticed a burbling and burping sound from around the radiator expansion tank. I think it's probably the rad cap going duff, but while I'm at it, I thought lets give the entire system a good clean and flush. Also, although it seems to be working fine, I thought I may change out the old thermostat that's in there. Went on line to order OEM rad cap and thermostat, rad cap available, thermostat no longer available discontinued by Triumph! Couldn't believe it, as that thermostat was used on many Triumph models of that era. So not sure what to do if mine does eventually go bad??

Hi David, I know what you mean about discontinued items, which has always seemed rather strange to me when it comes to service items like this... I was lucky with the project here, I found one online NOS from a random Ebay seller who wasn't a shop, just somebody had one knocking about still in a box so I got lucky!... but if you're absolutely stuck, then it's not critical to have one at all, you can actually leave it out and the only consequence will be that the bike takes long to warm up, not so good if you're riding in the depths of winter, specially short trips, but fine for temperate and fair weathering riding, but of course only if you have absolutely no choice... Thakns for your kind support, always good to hear from you mate.

That reminded me of the old game "Operation" lol. Nice precision drilling and good rad douching. I feel like radiator fluid is one of the most neglected routine maintenance items. Great work Del, way to take care of business and professional as always.
Thanks buddy, didn't it turn out filthy, it's all down to the iron cylinder liners that just constantly bleed rust in to the coolant, so these need it changed every year and it's no hardship to do, so yeah, makes you wonder why it's the worst neglected fluid! Fantastic result. So much gunk in there. I recently watched a video where gas struts were added to a older Toyota truck hood (bonnet). They were riveted in and in the kit came a sleeve that went around your drill bit that would stop you from going too deep. This was thin sheet metal but thought it was a good trick you could use with a piece of pipe or something along those lines as a drill stop. Obviously not as needed here.
Very interesting to watch. I like your methods! In the future, if you could put a caption/subtitle with the chemicals or greases you are using, that'd be super helpful. I know you show them sometimes, but just a request. Thanks!

Thanks Del, this vid answered my question as to whether or not the thermostat sits on those two little plastic steps inside the housing.
As far as expansion tank cleaning goes; I use hot water, dish soap and a small handful of gravel then shake it like crazy for a minute. If there's no gravel laying around then some small nuts 'n washers does the trick. It breaks pretty much all the scale without damage.
Cool trick, I use that for rusty fuel tanks, but use 6mm BB's, and they pour nicely out the fuel tap hole, gets all the rust out, then you can line it with Petseal, I'd never thought to use it in a plastic box, so thanks for the nudge mate!

Different kind of thermostat mate, they only open under pressure from the pump, not like the ones in yer car with a central disc...

Those spiral fluted taps are a good addition. They usually cut a better fitting thread, especially when using them when machine tapping. Nice one Del.
Yeah, most important on this occasion, those taps are flat bottomed and will cut all the way to the bottom of the blind hole.. and you're right, they do seem to make a snug fitting thread too.

Distilled vinegar?? That’s new to me!! Did very awesome job.. at the beginning, noticed your facial expressions showing me you are nearer and very anxious get that thing fired up!! Hey!! I’m anxious too, patient my friend!! 😉 you sure shined up radiator stuff, looks new!! 👍
Sure thing, white distilled vinegar is actually sold in gallon containers as cleaning vinegar, it's brilliant stuff, mama's household technology, pour it over rusty metal, leave 10mins, agitate and hey presto, shiney silver metal! But make sure you wash it off thoroughly with hot water till you can't smell it any more, or it can continue to eat in to the metal... like any acid... oh and PS, it's not the same as malt vinegar, so don't shake it on your fries!
Educational as always = I often wondered what the difference between white & brown vinegar was!
Joking aside this is a great series for aspiring home fettlers and the film production standards make everything so easy & enjoyable to follow. Only problem I can foresee is you & Pen are setting the bar higher & higher for yourselves so please take care & don’t burn out.

@Shed Life They would make a good repair, the biggest risk is the fitting thats got the snapped stump in it can just twist out of the sheet metal that holds it... and that's a bit more involved to repair.. and yeah, of course all things can be repaired, but it's nice to just extract the snapped bolt stumps and screw in some new ones aye.

Filming through a magnifying lens, brilliant job, wow! I was amazed (and mildly queasy while drinking my tea, which looked exactly the same colour lol) at how many rinses it took to clean all that rusty gunk out of the rad, yikes. Also; I never really knew what vinegar was actually made of, haha. Barley. Who knew?
Sorry mate, it was a bit sickly wasn't it?! And purely for production convenience, I actually edited out 3-4 more rinse throughs, it took ages to run clear, but it's all gone now!

There are also left-hand threaded taps and bolts that let you put a left-hand thread inside a hole drilled
in the broken bolt, insert the left-hand bolt into the left-tapped hole and simply unscrew the broken bolt
(if the threads aren't seized) without disturbing the original threads. The downside, of course, is that
you have to buy the specialty tools.
In 90% of cases the bolts I break off are truly seized for good, and no amount of left hand twist would get them out, and usually, like with this radiator and on exhaust studs, they're steel bolts in to fragile aluminium, so the worst of all worlds! But whatever works aye buddy, anything to git er dun!
@@Moonfleet41 - Do you have any tips on how to keep the drill bit steady and aligned as you drill into the seized bolt free-handed?
@@daveinwla6360 Yes mate, best tip I could ever pass on is to invest in a set of those spot drills, they got right down to 1mm or less, take every care in the world to get your centre punch mark right in the middle, even if that alone takes you an hour, it won't be an hour wasted, then go 2mm spot drill, then out to 3mm, then as I showed with the magnifier, you have a leading hole, that will lead your drill bit down the first 6mm of the hole dead in the centre, just keep the drill upright, or preferably use a pillar drill if you can, and then you'll make a perfect job every time!
@@Moonfleet41 - re: "even if... it takes an hour". Yes! Prep is 90% of success!
I had to look up "pillar drill" (here in the U.S. it;s called a "drill press"). That is what I'd want to use instead of my wiggly hands, but I haven't a clue about how I would hold the radiator steady while operating the drill press. I'd hate to use a wiggly hand while the other hand worked the drill press.
A compromise might to sit in a chair while holding the radiator between your knees with 2 boards and drilling straight down into the bolt shafts. I guess I have steadier knees than elbows. :-)

To be honest, I think the last time this bike saw any form of chemical coolant, other than H2O, was more than a decade ago! And it's probably spent the last 10yrs being topped up with distilled water... seriously, what poured out didn't smell remotely like coolant, just stale rusty water... !

Handful of dry rice in that expansion bottle before you shake it is a good move, Del. Just abrasive enough to remove any gunk inside.

Hi George, there are many tools in the world of machining that you could use, the black ones I have are an end drill tap for blind holes, and pretty expensive, but a better tool for general use is a combination drill bit which is basically a drill bit that has cutting teeth round the side, and you literally wind them through the hole slowly with a power drill, or by hand, whatever works... here's a link mate, they're normally about £85 a set, but these are way cheaper on SpannerMonkey, I have a set myself, and they're wonderful, also serious quality and will last you years... here's a direct link for you: www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/Wiha-Drill-Bit-Tap-Set-28026?search=combination%20drill%20bit&description=true

I took the bolts out right down the centre and as you saw, most of it lifted out but there was still debris in there, so the spiral drill tap just cleaned it up and took out all the swarf, what's there now is the original threads, fresh and clean!
