Just to clarify with the title of this video, which I use emojis instead of spelling out the 10-year old meme that is well known in the Wicked fandom, because it seems like some people like to throw the word "misogynistic" around without actually knowing what that means. The "is your p***y green" meme happened in 2014 because the original Broadway poster looks like Glinda is whispering in Elphaba's ear, and someone graffitied that question as a joke. It is part of internet culture and the title of my video is just a nod to that. Every online Wicked fan knows about it. Look up the word misogynistic and re-learn what that means because alluding to a decade-old harmless meme, and a question and aspect THAT IS IN THE BOOK, is not misogynistic and I am not using it to refer to any real person. Have a great day 💚
RIGHT?! It's so bizarre and I had to bring it up!! Unfortunately some people have taken offence with the question I put in the title of my video, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY IN THE BOOK!!
13:08 Yes! So many details are withheld until way later. I thought that since Elphaba was born with shark teeth, that she had them as an adult. It’s not until one of the last chapters that Frex mentions “At least her adult teeth came in as normal human teeth.” Like, bro, this whole time I thought she had them chompers!
@ Love your takes on the sequels. Couldn’t agree more! The first book is one of my favorites, but I STRUGGLED through 2-4 just so I could read the sequel trilogy that came out in 2020.
@@goodmanticore that's the point. To illustrate how rumors and what people say might not be the truth just because that's what everyone says. This book is all about how Gregory felt inspired by the fact that when he watched the movie and then read the books he always felt EVERYONE was hiding stuff in Oz. Then he remembered wizard of Oz is written from the view point of Dorothy(a child and much younger than Judy garland). Children don't see the actual horrors of the world they see things with rose colored glasses. He wanted to know what the world looked like without those
@LeadrynMcKrotch Right, but her having shark teeth isn’t a rumor in the book. She literally has them as a baby/toddler and bites the midwife’s finger off. Actually, the book does a pretty poor job of getting that theme across, especially when compared to the musical, since no one really thinks twice about Elphaba ever. She’s only deemed a threat when the Wizard realizes she has the Grimmerie. Before that, it’s the Animals and the Tigelaar family he’s after. Elphaba straight up makes up a rumor about herself killing Morrible (who has already died by the time she gets to her) so she can be given some credit.
Same. I recently read wicked and did not enjoy it and was not going to continue the series. Thank you Gavin for making me feel justified in my decision lol.
I just read Wicked, because another TH-camr mentioned the darker political undertones. And I really like that aspect, but the writing style really frustrated me. Elphaba is easy to resonate with in spite of the distance between character and reader via the narrator, and I get what Glinda’s role was, and Boq too (although he pissed me off). And I totally agree you about the lack of realistic progression of relationships! Fiyero felt very underdeveloped, given he’s meant to have such an impact on Elphaba and her deteriorating psyche. But the lack of emotional depth meant I didn’t care about much beyond Elphaba, and while in some places, it’s clearly intentional, I just bailed on Son of a Witch because my only real emotional connection was obviously gone. And yes to the rant about books and politics! A bunch of Glindas in your comments there!
@@GavinReadsItAll apparently he does have other books that are better, writing prequels for other people's characters sounds like easy money and bad literature.
@ I’d say it depends what you like. Elphaba and Glinda are spiritually close in both (granted, I’m mainly speaking from the book vs movie, as I haven’t seen the musical). The lack of character depth is where Fiyero suffered in the book, as I mentioned, and Jonathan Bailey just brings a whole heap of charisma to the role the book version really lacks. But I do think the exploration of Fiyero as a person of color and how that bonds him and Elphaba is a missed opportunity. Boq is basically a different person entirely, beyond both incarnations liking Glinda at some point, and I personally prefer at least Ethan Slater’s interpretation, where he’s clearly hurt by Glinda’s rejection, but there’s genuine chemistry with him and Nessarose, where he does like her platonically at least. Book Boq and his heel-turn from sympathetic to Elphaba’s cause to lecturing her about it was just…ick. Nessarose felt very underutilized in the book, and the one thing I do know is that there might be some updates to how they handle the disability storyline in act 2, because Marissa Bode is actually disabled, so I’m excited for that! I also feel like Maguire wanted to be faithful to the original Oz text when possible, subverting it mainly to show a new perspective without disrupting the canon, and in some ways, I respect it, and in others, I feel like Wicked distancing itself a little more did better overall. I do think Elphaba’s death in the book is more poetic, but at the same time, I love the serendipity of Fiyero and Boq ending up as the Scarecrow and Tin Man, because then all of Dorothy’s traveling companions were impacted in a way by Elphaba.

I was in a demanding job (event planning) and didnt use anything other than youtube. So a friend jokingly describe just the general concept of how ridiculous fan fiction is/was. And I replied oh so like the book wicked? 😂
I've only read the first book when it first came out. I do understand how Elphaba and Glinda became friends, but maybe some have never been in the position of either of these characters. I relate to some aspects of Elphaba. I was not like my siblings and I was made aware of this as often as possible by one parent. Because of that if anyone was nice to me I would often automatically think they were a friend or nice person. Glinda is honestly the same, but in a different way. She wants everyone to like her and to be seen by all as a good person. This makes her act in fake ways. When I read the book I felt that Elphaba saw well before Dorothy dropped into the story that Galinda was not truly her friend. When you are insecure because you afraid of people disliking you or people have never liked you, then it's easy to make "friends".
Love the commitment to this video, painting yourself green💚💚 and the costumes throughout. Love all the outfits, I think my fav costume is Glinda, formerly G-Linda. I haven’t read the book yet but I feel like she’s a more complex character after seeing the broadway and the new film (it’s incredible!!) obviously LOVE elphaba too

Love this vlog and all the costumes 🥰 and how you kept waving your paw arround🤣
I tried to read Eivked in college and quickly determined that I hated the writing. I commend you for ginishing the series. 😂😅
Wow I feel like watching the broadway show 🤣 Noone looks good in green except you Gav!
Haha I should do a one-man show of Wicked just for you!
Not the postie 😂😂😂 how were they not LOVING it!
Loved the balcony scene!
Love the commitment to this video, painting yourself green💚💚 and the costumes throughout. Love all the outfits, I think my fav costume is Glinda, formerly G-Linda. I haven’t read the book yet but I feel like she’s a more complex character after seeing the broadway and the new film (it’s incredible!!) obviously LOVE elphaba too
Did I click it for the answer? Yes. Did I stay for the Looks? Of course. I am so glad You did this because I could not finish Wicked, and have no energy to read the others.
Never been more locked in
Well, if there was any piece of Wicked media that would tell you that, it most definitely would be the original Wicked book!
I love Wicked, I love Gavin’s videos = match made in heaven! ❤
