Fun and unnecessary fact lol, Im a distant relative of L Frank Baum. But if you go to his hometome Chitenango, NY they have Oz Stravaganza at the end of May and its a whole fair about the land of Oz and people dress up as the characters, theres writing contests, silent auctions, special guests connected to the books and movies, parades, etc etc. its really fun! I went every year as a kid. I also remember the Chitenango Library is themed with Wizard of Oz and it felt like I walked into oz when I was a kid.

10:50 fun fact! The musical is based on the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire. There are four books in the series; Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion among Men, and Out of Oz. Maguire takes a lot of small details from the Oz books and weaves them into his series. Even the wicked witch of the west name, Elphaba, comes from the Oz author's initials L.F.B. Maguire also has a Cinderella retelling but from the POV of the stepsister.

You might be interested to know that Tik-Tok is considered by many to be the first true robot in literature. I thought that was so interesting, because you wouldn't expect these books to actually have some serious firsts when you consider that they were largely written as an American answer to the lack of fairy tales in the US. One of the main things ended up being pretty sci-fi.

It’s so frustrating for me that these books were so incredibly popular at one point in time, yet only a small handful of movies have been made from any books after the first one. There is SO much great material there! I’m a very visual learner, so I’m not above loving the movies equal to or more than the book, and it always adds to my enjoyment to actually be able to physically see the scene, characters, etc.

The copyright on Baum's Oz books has expired now so movie companies could make movies of them if they wanted to. But, back in1954, Disney bought the movie rights to the rest of Baum's Oz books after the first one. They started production on a movie called The Rainbow Road to Oz but it was never released.

    • @drh3b
      @drh3b 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the problem is until fairly recently, the special effects would have been prohibitively expensive. And, the stories are probably often outdated. I read all of the first 40 books(other authors took over after Baum died) as a child, and a few of ones written even later as an adult. It's been decades since I read any though...

So, the movie was my favorite. I’m 60 now, and I never knew there were books outside of the 64 page book my mother would read me -
Fast forward to the age of 40? I believe, and my husband had gotten me the 50th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz.
I was consuming every page and kept coming across a guy with the same last name as my grandpa, Raabe.
Please take this next part in - every year for 3 hours (with commercials) my family, including my mother and father would watch The Wizard of Oz. It was the only time my parents were together, and no one fought.
Back to age forty… My mother walks through my door and I say - Mom there is this guy in here who has the same last name as Grandpa. Meinhart Raabe… My mother nonchalantly says… Oh, that’s just your cousin Meinhart!!
My mouth fell open! I’m thinking this would have been a super cool thing to know growing up!
I called my aunt Jane who used to play on Meinhart’s farm in Juneo Wisconsin, and I found him in Florida, at Penny Farms, his wife had recently passed, and he was just the most delightful man.
When my grandfather, C.C. Raabe passed away, I knew I would never get a hand written letter from him ever again…
Fast forward to 2018, and I’m driving cross country and see the signs to the Wizard of Oz Museum. I tell the curator who I am and she takes me on a special tour and tells me delightful stories, when there in glass cases is Meinhart’s signature… my heart broke, because it was exactly like Grandpa’s.
Anyway, it’s a sweet story, and my children and grandchildren know - it’s a huge cool factor!
    Have a blessed day!

It was a modern day version of The Wizard of Oz, but it has a lot of things in it that I now know are from the other books you've mentioned above. The Wizard of Oz actually has a lot of political allusions. The Yellow brick road referred to the gold standard. The three (lion, Scarecrow, Tina Man) were all supposed to be certain politicians (can't remember who, though)

    • @oliviastratton2169
      @oliviastratton2169 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

This is mostly stuff academics read into the book later. Baum himself wrote:
"Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident.
Having this thought in mind, the story of 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' was written solely to pleasure children of today."
The only political allusion Baum seems to have intentionally put in the books were some female-empowerment themes due to his involvement in the suffrage movement.

Tin Man and General Grievous display striking parallels in their origins: Both were stripped of their natural selves by the influence of others, their body parts replaced with mechanical ones, transforming them into machines. While one seeks a heart, the other is driven by a thirst for revenge. 🤖

If you haven't already, you should look into The Search for WondLa series by Tony DiTerlizzi. It's a mid-grade fantasy/Sci-fi where a young girl goes on a search for other humans, something she's only ever seen in a picture that she calls WandLa but it's actually the cover of the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It's got a lot of similar themes of discovering new worlds and wanting to find your home and I really loved it =)

If I recall, several of these books were actually stage productions first then adapted to book form. That's probably why there are so many inconsistent and repetitive elements in some of these. Definitely doesn't explain all of them , but I think LFB was more invested in getting Oz on the stage than the page in some cases.

Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry do stay in Oz at the end of book 6.
Baum actually wanted to move on from Oz, so in book 6 it is stated there will be no more Oz books, but then pressure and a need for money took over and he continued… but started phoning it in. Sort of.
Book 8 is actually a novelization of the play based on book 3 which pulled in elements from book 4-5 as well.
Book 9 is actually a sequel to two books about Trot and Cap’n Bill, but that series didn’t catch on like Oz had.
Book 10 was written with no mention of Oz, but he was pressured into rewriting the ending to tie it into the series.

Yes Toto talking really bothered me at the time and now I realized why. They were doing a "retcon" to explain the plot hole of why we can talk and Bellina can. I know realize that this prepared me for later in life when Star Wars, and now many other series, used prequels to retcon a bunch of things about franchises. It is the most memorable part of the book.

I never knew there were this many.
Not counting movies I know the series best by its cartoon that covers about 3 or 4 seasons and goes to the desert and every which way on top of movie 1 events.
Now I see the cartoon could not cover everything despite its length as I thought it might have done before.
14 is quite a long series by my reconning.

1:06:50 In the Tin Woodsman of Oz, the tin man considered his tin body superior to his “meat body.” The witch actually stole his og head, and the tinsmith made him a new head. Nimee stole the head back, but the tin man chose to keep the tin head because he liked it better.
I really liked the part in the book where the tin woodman and the tin soldier were talking about how much better their tin bodies were compared to their old bodies. Woot mentioned meat bodies don’t rust, and both tin men just looked at him.

PLEASE do an episode on the Ruth Plumly Thompson Oz books. My partner got me an old copy of The Gnome King of Oz and I absolutely love it and I really want to know more about her other books but my ADHD makes reading quite difficult for me and I fear I’ll never read them on my own.

Wow, only ever heard of the Gregpry Maguire side series (would love to see a youtube video done on that series, hint, beg). Have to go look for this one too! This comment section always has the best info ☺️
