- This video is the story about Fiji Indians. They were brought to Fiji in the late 1800's and early 1900's as indentured labourers. In those days Fiji was a British Colony. The five year indenture contract was called Girmit by the Indians who made the journey on high seas in the hope of a better life for themselves and their descendants. Most of this video was produced in 2001 - it also reflects the technology that was available at that time.
as a descendant of girmitiya now settled in Canada from bottom of my heart I pray for what they suffered and did for us present day descendant of girmityas-----may their soul rest in peace
where can I find the this song
on the anniversary of girmit in FIJI watching this video today, may our ancestors soul rest in peace,a great salute to them.
Thank God I'm not Indian. Our ancestor sufered more than we did. Proud to be a Fijian. Hell with the British Government at that time that treated our ancestors so bad. And Indian government could not stand up for their people. They cannot take care of themselves. I'm proud of what I am now. I'm proud that I'm educated and they cannot fool this generation. That's why the British are going back home.

Great video and a good history lesson for us.. Thanks for posting
Thanks Krishneel for your feedback. It is good to know about our past and the sacrifices made by our ancestors.
Very informative and touching account of girmiteers!
Is there a way to track our ancestor back?
BoredThatsWhy
You need to locate your ancestors Emigration Pass. If you know their name (be careful with spellings), their father's name, name of the ship they came on then finding the pass is quite easy. This pass can be found at the Archives in Fiji. The National Library of Australia also has it. With this information we were able to trace the origins of our ancestors.
My great great great great paternal grandma is sirtaji.

Lets not forget hard work and suffering of girmit era
