  • Ethnic Unrest (2000): Failed businessman-cum-politician George Speight has been remarkably successful in his forceful takeover of the Fijian government.
    Subscribe to Journeyman here: th-cam.com/users/subscription_c...
He has held the small island's ethnic Indian PM hostage for weeks, hailing himself the chosen leader of Fiji's indigenous population. We get daily doses of Speight's vision of a new Fiji, a "political system that enshrines indigenous supremacy." But is the ethnic conflict the only reason for this violence, or is the battle really over Fiji's mahogany goldmine?

Dated documentary. Things went downhill for Speight soon after. According to Wikipedia:
'On 18 February 2002, Speight was sentenced to death after pleading guilty to a charge of treason. However the government of the Prime Minister Hon. Laisenia Qarase had abolished the death sentence in the House of Representatives on the day that Speight was sentenced. President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, who had replaced Mara following the coup, followed the advice of the Prime Minister and commuted Speight's sentence to life imprisonment. Speight started serving his sentence on Nukulau Island where he had been living out his exile. Following the decision of the Military government to close the Nukulau facility Speight was transferred on 20 December 2006. He is currently serving out his sentence at the Naboro Maximum Security Prison."

Qarase did not abolish the death penalty but the 1997 Consitution. Bainimarama & Chaudary has since conducted the misguided 2006 coup and must be jailed for this crime. George got it right when saying indigenous rights were threatened and given the destruction of their rights since Bai & Khaiyum took power, the itaukei must work hard to get rid of this corrupt and racist government and throw them in jail for treason.

Have to give a big thank you to Rabuka , Speight and his mates who showed to the Fiji Indians that there are much larger opportunities and greener pastures aboard. Brother, we Fijian Indians (we are NOT Fijians) are one of a kind, a special group of people who were bought, ringfenced on a random island over a century ago and left to defend ourselves against slave masters and the indigenous people of the land the Fijians on whom, we were imposed.
Open racism in Fiji was something I grew up with as Fijians looked indifferently at us across every facet of government policy right down to how we functioned every day as citizens, we were effectively shoved off as second class citizens, and, nothing has changed as far as I hear.
However, as you rightly mentioned, as the extremism of people like Rabuka and Qarase took hold of Fiji, our people RELUCTANTLY moved to places where our collective wealth has simply skyrocketed, my family went from 1 house in Fiji to 20 houses in NZ, a shopping mall as well, extended family members have 10X'd their wealth in Australia, USA and so on.
It is funny how things work out in life however it saddens me to this day, that many, many decades after the Rabuka terrorist uprising, we seem to have fallen further and further into division.
PM Bainimarama is a man well ahead of his time, a humble pragmatist who has nothing but the progress of his country at heart and he drives things very clearly on an equal opportunities based mandate.
However, he now seems to have created legions of Fijians who think he is pro Fijian Indian based on his deputy being Indian.
I feel this hate filled merry go round will never, ever stop in Fiji as once the Indian targeting stops, the Fijians begin imploding amongst themselves as tribes clash to establish their own mandate.
In the meantime, Fijian Indian kids are graduating from Universities across the world, becoming leading heart surgeons, engineers, business people and owners of hundreds of thousands of properties, collectively.
It is what it is, it was what it was.

If people are salty about indian and Chinese living in Fiji, blame the Fijian chief ancestors leaders and British at the time not Indian or even later generation of Indians who were born there. These leaders made that decision for whatever reasons, they could have been naive, weak or corrupt or not intelligent enough to see if you bring in and let so many people into your country you have to accept them into the system.

I think they are worried that their homeland is stolen and that their history will be erased and their faces replaced like what has happened to The Hawaiian Indigenous or what is happening to the Indigenous People of PNG. It's like the black skin natives with Afros who originally inhabit the islands have all been targets for foreigners to wipe out and replace with "new faces". These new faces then attempt to erase not only the natives themselves but their history. Milking the land and resources in the process yet claiming it's to help the peoples (who have survived 1000s of yrs on these islands without help) and not to satiate their greed. I find it funny that people act appalled when natives choose to arm themselves or protect thier homelands. Most of these nations that spawn the people that engage in such colonial activities all build powerful weapons themselved so the same situation doesnt happen to them, which means they know it's wrong because they dont want to happen to them in their Homelands what they do to others in theirs, yet they still do it. It also appears that when they do they love to target the natives with Black skin and afro hair texture no matter where they are on the planet... Imagine if it was the opposite. I wonder if people would keep their views if it was their native Country, City, Town, etc. that was being Politically, Economically and Militarily controlled by foreign powers.

@@mikaelblakwater3008 there is a difference between takeover through legal ways and illegal. If a small country accepts a certain number of refugees and some generations later they take over the country is different to a forced military takeover of the country. With a foreign military takeover you cannot be angry unless you didn't put up a fight.

The Fijians are very good people but easily fooled by thier leaders. They fail to realise that the Indians didn't colonize or invade Fiji. It's the British who colonised thier country. Just as British colonised India and took all the wealth and natural resources back to the UK, the British did the same in Fiji. They took all the resources and wealth back to UK. They converted native Fijian land to freehold and they treated the natives and the indians very badly. But for some reason, the Fijians love the British but don't like the Indians. If they realise what the British did to them and thier country. Indians have never invaded or colonised another country. It's the British and Muslims who always invade and colonise other countries as they did in India.

Before colonization, our forefather were literally at war with each other trying to fight for power and this has lasted for thousands of years and we've never been able to unify. We need to change this because obviously it has brought us nowhere. Fijians can't even work together, we are always at each others throats yet you want Fiji for only fijians and only controlled by fijians. We were damn warlords in pre colonial times! The main culprit here is the British they have taken people from the Indian sub-continent and scattered them all over the globe under the system of 'indentured labour'. When the British left at the collapse of their empire they did not leave with the people they brought then creating the conditions of tensions and conflict between the Indians and the indigenous populations. The British have done this in the Carribean, in Guyana, in Tanzania, in Kenya, in South Africa, In Malawi, in almost the entire southern Africa and in all its former colonies.
It cannot be claimed that the government is legitimate and democratic when the entire cabinet is made up of people of foreign origin. The Indians in Fiji have no one to blame except themselves, it seems, for not having made efforts to foster good relations with the indigenous Fijians. The Land belongs to the indigenous Fijians not to the farce foreign legion who came in Fiji in the 19th century!

Thank you for this documentary it makes you wonder - how did George Speight have authority to authorize a specialized unit (CRW) from the Military to do his bidding that to me is just big question mark? The Media referenced them as rebel soldiers?? Cause if we look back at the previous new paper articles, this CRW soldiers were brutally beaten to death after the military fought back? from my understanding, a specialized unit (like Fiji's CRW) only take orders from the Military Commander and who was the military commander then - FRANK! So why would a specialized unit take orders from a Civilian, mind you this CRW men from the video and if you check out news footage were not wearing uniform but civilian outings and had weapons, where did the weapons come from - The Military! - Makes you wonder if Frank was behide the 2000 coup himself and George Speight was the puppet and it appears it got out of hand when he had to clean face and then brutally murder his own man (CRW Soldiers) to make himself look good! Remember this are specialized soldiers who are trained as military experts you can easily google what their training consist of, basically they were Fiji's SAS version or SEAL's. Why use them instead of ordinary soldiers? who knows maybe cause their had the training, experience to carry out those task? But still the order still has to come from the Top, i.e Military Commander, this units are specialized to follow procedure orders, if you watch enough military movies, its known fact! Post 2000 coup: Then bring Qarase in and then only to throw him out again in the 2006 coup! 16 years of power - The questions leads back to Bainimarama, however despite all the changes he made for the country - but all the people he used, hurt and death on his hands just for power - it raises a lot of questions. Is it really about the Indigenous Fijians - or was that a front for greed for power! tbh I have not seen our Local Journalist ever question Bainimarama this out of fear and his military power then! There is loop holes that we need to question, and whether are we asking those questions. Either way, we have a new government, it bids to question, are they going to hold our now new opposition leader accountable? or we going to move from that and focus on our future? - My 2 cents input

    • @lanietamaiwaqa6275
      @lanietamaiwaqa6275 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also on that note - I have just discovered that the CRW Unit was formed in the RFMF under Sitiveni Rabuka Leadership when he was commander? which again then brings us back how much involvement does both two leaders, both coup leaders have in the 2000 coup? But again this 2023! let's see - the truth always prevails and see how the next four years plays out for both this leaders? Vinaka

A bit of anti indigenous propaganda in this video. Blame the British for their colonial strategy of dominance over Fijians in their own country which later immigrants have adopted. Blame them for not assimilating Indians into Fijian culture from the day the Leonidas arrived. George is a revolutionary who has every right to stand up when their rights are not protected by law and threatened.... this is not racism. In hindsight, George was also a visionary because the Indian coup of 2006 had seen the erosion of indigenous rights like never before. Corrupt politicians should be jailed if they threaten indigenous rights. The video is all propaganda by foreign interests and producers should stop this racist nonsense. Too many people talking about Mahogany where they have nothing to do with the land trees and govt policy into harvesting. Proud?? When Rabuka carried out the first coup he opened the Pandora's box of pure evil. Neighbours became enemies. Indian families were terrorized, beaten and robbed of what they gathered through years of hard work. Nothing was ever "given" to them. They never recieved wads of money for idle ownership of land. During the coup, the lesser known stories are the most horrific, how in rural areas homes were invaded and young Indian girls raped in front of their families by their "fijian brothers". Disgust?? Yes, disgust is what I feel for people who cover up atrocities and ignore the ugly outcome of their actions. Indian students worked hard for their marks, only to have their marks scaled so the lesser marks of Fijian students could be pumped up. I was one of those students and I learnt a new lesson that day. My hard work and sacrifice lost in the face of entitlement. God gave land to all mankind. I'm still searching the bible for where he gave it exclusively to Fijians. Indians never expected anything for free, just fairness in return for hard work and to live with dignity.

It is hard to survive in a third world country for the people, because of its traditional chief like culture and land issues, there's much greed and corruption like any other nation, eg. Philippines or Indonesia etc., God is the Sovreign ruler of all nations, if they only follow His instructions given in the Bible, esp; in the Book of Proverbs. He gave wisdom to Solomon, He is still in the business of giving wisdom to today's leaders of any nation. If we Obey God's commandments, and leaders lead their people to obedience, then and then only will there be peace for everyone, remember the devil has come down like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, if people of the country especially leader give themselves to the devil, there will be hatred and bloodshed, then God's judgements are rampant, we can see how God's judgements are falling all over the places, with natural disasters in every place, this will increase Christ; Who will take on all nations in His hands one day soon and will rule with a rod of iron. He shall come with all of His angels as lightening shines from east to west, we need to fear God, all earthly things are going to vanish. Read Revelation 14th Chapter and 18 chapter. This is a fact. Proverbs 11:14 Amplified Bible "Where there is no [wise, intelligent] guidance, the people fall [and go off course like a ship without a helm], But in the abundance of [wise and godly] counselors there is victory". Proverbs 15:22
Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.
    Proverbs 16:22
Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.
    Proverbs 24:6
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of Counsellers there is safety.

Anyone who came onto Indigenous lands as visitors to that land will always be foreigners of that land and should always have respect and for the traditional people of that land period. Money greed and power has created horrific scars spiritually and emotionally for the the only real possession that indigenous peoples of the world had that was the LAND. Evil came to the land $$$$ Money created the deception the gun enforced it and the pen of the foreign laws became the law and sealed the deal. A fijian cannot gave birth in china/japan/India and their kids can say oh I'm Indian or Chinese or Japanese. Your birth certificate says place of Birth. So Indian will always be India. If they want to call themselves Fijian when First.. build their own school that teaches their own language and culture, rather then learn Fijian language and Fijian culture. That alone tells me that how long they been in Fiji generations after generations they still can't speak Fijian like Fijian and they will never be Fijian.

They could not find any proof and look at what is happening in Fiji now. Itaukei losing everything to corrupt Indian businessmen.
