I do not get it, this is currently the national hymne for Germany. So, does this mean Germany kind of stole it?
If so, this must be rectified and should go to Austria again if they want.
The melodie is simply the same my friend and you shouldn't forget Austrians are German as any other German is; be they Bavarian, Saxons or whatever.
Austria is a part of Germany even if many deny it and even if it is not part of the "Federal Republic of Germany".
In 1797, the Austrian government commissioned Joseph Haydn to compose a tune for an "Anthem for the Austrian People", which would later become the Austrian Imperial anthem. The Germans pinched the tune in 1922.
Prussians stole the whole of Germany from its rightful masters.
@@kurtgodel5236 In 1841, August Heinrich Hoffmann wrote the words "Deutschland über Alles" etc. to fit the Austrian Volkshymne, but the combination did not become the German national anthem, as you wrote, until 1922.
@@gbarnardoh It is true, of course, that in 1841 a poet dilettante by the name of Hoffmann wrote some alternative lyrics for Haydn’s tune.
That is not to say, however, that the German public would take any notice. In his diaries, Hoffmann bemoaned that his lyrics were all but unknown throughout Germany. Circulation of his song was confined to a bunch of rabidly anti-Semite and pan-German fraternities. This wouldn’t change until the late 1890s. The song’s final break-through was result of a gross historical lie, known by the euphemistic term of “Myth of Langemarck“. That was in 1914.
