Evolution of 'God Save the King' 1745 - 2023 [1K Special] [4K]

- 'God Save the King' gained popularity during the reign of King George II (1727-1760) and became the anthem of Great Britain. A song of loyalty and patriotism to the king, with the original lyrics mentioning the name 'George' prominently in the verses.
It wasn't until the reign of his grandson, King George III (1760-1820), that the song became more associated with the growing British Empire.
During the reign of King George IV (1820-1830), the song remained unchanged and was the last time the original was used for the anthem.
William IV's reign saw the name George dropped from the song and replaced with 'King' instead but there are no recordings of his lyrical version specifically.
Under Queen Victoria, "God Save the Queen" became the official anthem, reflecting the monarchs gender and was played at state occasions and public events. It was used again to promote British Dominance and dominion over the globe. This recording is the earliest ever recording of the Anthem, sometime in the 1880s.
During the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910), "God Save the King" was played during the coronation ceremony, and the anthem was widely used to promote national pride and patriotism. Edward VII's version is the earliest known vocal recording of the Anthem.
Under King George V (1910-1936), the anthem remained unchanged and was played during World War I as a symbol of national unity and strength.
During the reign of King Edward VIII (1936), "God Save the King" was used, but he abdicated before anything could have happened to the anthem.
Under King George VI (1936-1952), like his father the anthem was very popular in wartime as a sign of strength and willpower in the UK.
Under the late Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the anthem had remained unchanged expect for the pronouns and was still played at national events, such as the changing of the guard and state visits.
Charles III's reign has only began, but as of today (12/5/23) it remains the same as in previous years. Though some people have mentioned that since 'Charles' is a one syllable word like 'George' the anthem could go back to naming the monarch, but we will see.

What about Anne?
@@dsideman but those 3 are more famous than Anne. The Elizabethan period, The Victorian Period and the Modernization of the Monarchy.
Are you ranking them? If so, Elizabeth should be above Victoria.
England often enjoys a lucky streak whenever there's a female monarch on the throne, why is that ?
As King Charles III release his royal cypher, the Coat of Arms has changed, St. Edward's Crown changed into Tudor Crown, because Tudor Crown is symbols Masculinity, and St. Edward's Crown symbols Femininity, the difference is in the arches
Incorrect. It is certainly commonly perceived in that way in modern times but many people do forget that the image of the Crown was only first stabdardised in 1901 after the death of Queen-Empress Victoria. Under her successor (King-Emperor Edward VII) law had estabilished for the first time how the crown was meant to be drawn and depicted. Images of the crown before 1901 are assumed to be images of Saint Edwards Crown where the arches are depressed, however that is also untrue. They are in fact depictions of the State crowns of previous monarchs. For example, the crown as shown from George 1 to at least Victoria were most likely to be depictions of the Imperial State Crown of George 1. Note that that crown is different to the present Imperial State Crown, whose design was made for Queen-Empress Victoria. Indeed, after 1877 at least, the crown had been primarily depicted with full arches instead of depressed arches. Such a design was kept after she died, was standardised and termed the 'Tudor' crown for its similarities to the physical Tudor crown created for Henry VIII. The image changed with Queen Elizabeth II due to personal preference and as such, after her death, it has been reverted back to its proper form. Another feature of the coat of arms to had been change with her accession was the depiction of The Harp in the third quartering of the shield. Traditionally it is depicted in Angelic form, however Elizabeth II had changed the design to a Celtic Harp due to personal preference. This is one detail that has not been reverted to its proper form on the coat of arms, possibly as a nod to the former Queen.
There are two versions of the cypher, one with the Tudor crown and one with the Scottish crown.
@@charmainelamont2020 Yes. And two coats of arms and there used to be two versions of the Union Flag, on with St Georges cross predominant for England and Wales, and one with St Andrews cross predominant for Scotland. That was done away with the Act of Union 1800 with Ireland creating the flag we know and love today

Very informative video. A few things not mentioned.
# God Save the King/Queen has been a national anthem in over 15 countries, which include Germany, Russia, Lichtenstein, Netherlands, and The United States of America (God save George Washington).
# It is also a hymnal of which there are about 5 versions.
# Was an anthem for noble German families in the 19th century. The jubilee overture by Carl Maria von Weber has the most magnificent version in it. Well worth the listen.
# It was because of God save the Queen (HIM Queen Victoria), that the Royal Military School of music was established at Kneller hall as a centre of Military music.
Hope that the above helps.
God save the king.
GOD SAVE THE KING” I am always bewilder hearing this anthem « Grand Dieu sauve le Roi », that was compose from a poem of the la duchesse de Brinon, music composes by Lully in 1686 to celebrate the successful surgical intervention on Louis XIV’s fistula! It is believed that it was pinched by Haendel when he hears this hymn preform at Versailles!
God Save George Washington! is that even a real thing
@@Nogal_Productions . Yes it is. The Star spangled banner was the official national anthem, but it wasn't ratified until 1935. The Americans then created Hail to the chief for the president alone. Until 1935, most people outside of America thought the national anthem was 'Stars and stripes Forever', by John Philip Sousa.

Britannia does not rule the waves like she used to but the sun still shines over the Empire, no matter how small!
The empire ruled the world because it broke the chains of the enslaved, and protected free men from slavery. Britain made men free, and changed the world forever. When It fell back into darkness after the great war, with heavy statist and socialist laws, the true beacon of Liberty was snuffed out.

And I become Queen at 20, I’m apparently the youngest to become Queen since Victoria reigned at 18. This was Woody.EXE’s request and i approved it just 47 hours before his accession announcement made official for wales. I’ll always remember a large crowd getting hyped as hell, it was the same 24 hours before Woody.EXE and I had the coronation on my 21st birthday in July 2023. Wales has changed a lot since the Queen died and we both are still reigning on almost 2 years later

If that's the best advertisement for monarchy, there's no reason to keep it.

That’s because it had different lyrics when it was written, primarily used as an anthem for American loyalists at the time

I guess the words had to be changed when the first non-George ascended to the throne.
This lyrics to this song were originally written by the Italian-French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1686 for King Louis XIV, as "Grand Dieu Sauve le Roi." Louis XIV is the world's longest-reigning monarch, with Elizabeth II coming in at second place. It is fitting that the most well-known monarchist song has been used for the longest-reigning king as well as the longest-reigning queen.
William Croft wrote the national anthem for Queen Anne in 1701.
There is actually zero evidence to support this. It is only a rumour spread by the Marquise de Créquy in a book she wrote.

Interesting to hear how the last line has changed how its pronounced.
As a german I'm asking is it true that the second verse is only played during war time? I love the UK by the way
When I was young I learnt all three verses, it was sometimes used, about half the time. I don’t remember if we sang the second verse because it was still the standard or if we were still in that phase of patriotism from the Falklands and gulf war.
No it's not. Both verses are sung on large state occasions (I've heard both verses more in the last year than I have in my entire 43 years), and they're both sometimes sung at Remembrance services in November each year. Usually only when the monarch is in attendance though.
Oh crikey! I've only just heard the 2nd verse for the late Queen in this video. No that's almost never sung ever in public! Not something that's routinely taught and it would only be for a specific recording for posterity! (I note the video has also managed to avoid some of the very problematic verses which involve invoking God to crush other parts of the UK which would obviously not go down well).
@@rhimccrorie6578 I agree - I've heard the "Thy Choicest Gifts In Store" verse at major occasions but never the "Oh Lord Our God Arise" verse. I thought that was considered too belligerent for modern times.
@@yvonnestrong3856 I agree and disagree, the 'O Lord, our god arise' part is only sung during Wartime, which may or may not happen at any moment since the powers that be could quite possibly declare war at any given time as is their right. I can't think any reason of doing so as of yet so who knows. I'd personally put emphasis on the goddess Britannia as a metaphor for everyone represented through parliament rather than a religious god but that's just my personal opinion ahaha😅.
