My favorite aspect in this game is all enemies have finite ammo. A guy with a tommy gun might only have two drums; they run out of ammo and switch to their sidearm; they run out of sidearm ammo and they will run up to you and punch you. I've never seen any other game do this.
Also, that is usually a reason for you to kill them quickly if you need their weapon. Because if you let them shoot you for a long time, you won't get anything from them.
One time when deadly force was authorised I had like 33 health and I had a small car and they had road blocks but a train station saved me and I got away by train I'll never forget that moment

The phone booth thing is a nice touch because at the time (1930s) police officers didn’t carry portable radios. There would most likely be one in the patrol cars (that’s a maybe for some departments) but otherwise you had to call in for information or to report crimes. (Mafia II is kind of annoying in that regard, as it acts like all the foot officers have radios, Mafia III barely gets by, because by 1968 there would have been smaller radios)
Well Mafia 2 is set in 1945 and 1951, so it's almost 20 years later, by that point officers already had radios in their cars. And 9 years later in 1960 is when they started getting portable radios too
In my opinion mafia 1 cops are better than gta 3 cops because in gta 3 if you kill a cop that witnessed a crime you wanted status stays the same however in mafia 1 if you do the same your wanted status disappears, awesome
I've only seen the Highway Patrol Lassiter V16 in cutscenes/spawned through mods but I never knew it actually responds as an actual police unit. Very cool! It's a shame this bad boy didn't make it into the definitive edition
most people who never played this game don't realize how ahead of its time the Wanted System and the Police were in this game, it was even more advanced than GTA. to this day its the most advanced in some ways, that's how advanced it is.
There's a way to get the officers to hijack each other when you are in the seat of their car. Also, everyone out to get you will attack the police first.
Try to steal five or more vehicles driven by aggressive men - taxi drivers, truckers etc. People with baseball bats and guns. Let them chase you and attack a gangster or a police officer. Your angry mob will help you :-)
I really like police and gangsters behaviour in this game. Then they spot you, its really hard to lose the tail espacially with slow or damaged cars. Or with the gangsters on your tail you have to break the rules and you have more problems. They also shoot gangsters too. Check gangsters ai, they even hijack any other car to chase you. New games should learn from this.
I remember in the mission Molotov Party. Gangsters emerged from the Morello Bar, started shooting at me. When the police showed up they killed the officers, stole their car and started chasing me :-)
You forgot to mention that police makes barricades and throw spikes to brake your wheels. Also iirc police using that red phone booths, that red phone booths have extra "interior" inside with texture of phone handset
Yup, plenty of traffic lights in this one! LMAO, I couldn't remember how often I had seen stop lights/signs in the original since the remake has *ONE* , count it, 1 single traffic light in the entire city LOL The game looks nice and plays decent, but the lack of street signs and lights is ABSURD!
Tbh traffic lights were not that common in the 30s. And even if there was a traffic light in an intersection, it stood on a pedestal in the middle of the intersection. So actually we could say that both games got it wrong
Also another detail in this game is that police cars are also faster than the civillian version of the same car. Don't know if the top speed is more than the regular car but the acceleration definetly is way faster. In Mafia 2 they're also faster than their regular civillian versions and you can actually hear their engines sound different just like it would sound if you go to the garage and upgrade your car's performance
the little details the Police have for when they want to give you a ticket or arrest you or how getting a ticket 3 times in a row will make them want to arrest you or how losing them has its own systems and all these little details just show how much effort they put in to it, to this day no other game has such an advanced Wanted System.
Hi, nice video, though much shorter than your newest ones but, not a criticism, AI has a lot of issues though it's a great one for 2002, along with how great the graphics look for the time, maybe I misunderstood, but at 7:44 "the AI seems cheated in some points. I disharged my weapon unseen by the police, but they put the blame on me", well even if it was the case this is very minor and a similar mechanism to what you already covered. Like you are already wanted but the police lost contact with you and is in search, well like what when they are confused (wondering cop icon) because you left your vehicle or changed it and they can't recognize you (I come back to the questionable aspect of it), if you commit a crime again, they know it's you and, in a more advanced AI setting, calling the owner, ask them if they recognize you and other possible proof to link you to your crimes. Yeah strictly speaking is not 100% guarantee it's you and just very likely and in theory they should only suspect it's you and arrest you for speeding, finding out the car is not yours. In this case police only lost sight of you and can recognize you, so as you shoot you call attention to that spot, but the gun icon, it seems, becomes bright again only as you climb some stairs and your plausibly sticks out from the wall you were using for cover, so it only made sense. For them getting confused as you leave the vehicle unseen, it makes sense to an extent, at least short to mid term, if they didn't see your face when you get wanted so they can only search the vehicle, relatively reasonable at a certain distance from the back and at a shorter one from the front, but close enough they should be able to see you. But instead of give up and calling off search immediately, a more advanced AI could have them keep investigating the people present in the nearby zone, if they see on running away they could suspect, but more straight forward, if there is no one but you within the distance you could resonable have ran on foot after they lost sight, they'd know it's you after having inspected the car and found no one. If other people you could blend with are present, they'd ask if they saw someone leaving the car they are indicating and if yes point at them, bonus point if in the middle of the road, bigger chance they paid attention to it and found it suspect.

the police in this game were really intimidating unlike GTA even though the Police in GTA games were no joke neither, still they were designed for fun and to chase you around and you still had ways to survive them but in Mafia as soon as you saw the 1911 Image on top which meant the Police are going to kill you you just knew you're screwed, you had to have a fast car, guns, high health and still you had to be lucky and also outsmart them to be able to survive them if they were trying to kill you, and even with all that you might not survive. because they had fast cars and they'd shoot you with tommy guns and shotguns while chasing the f*** out of you which made them so much more dangerous than GTA Police because GTA Police wouldn't shoot you from their car, you just didn't wanna f*** with them because you knew there's gonna be 2 or 3 cars at the very least that are gonna chase you and shoot you with Tommy Guns and they'd bump in to you and shoot your tires, they weren't designed just for fun, they were designed to be Realistic.
they are faster and hit harder and have incredible maneuverability. i think people are accepting that police ai have to be rigged in games if they dont mention it. they always succeed in their takedown technique by ramming you on the side front wheel, unless you prepared a lampost or another car in their path and they crash.
That happened because they just had crashed against a civilian car. You can see it with some difficulty in slo-mo and also by the sound of the sirens going off
