  • The X350 and X358 generation Jaguar XJ is easily one of my favourite Jag platforms I've driven, especially in supercharged 400 horsepower XJR form. But even in this more modest - and even more affordable - XJ8 trim, there is still a plethora of things to love about these XJ's.
    From acres of space in the cabin and boot, to a superb air cushioned ride, to a clean and classy retro-modern design, and of course effortless performance, they really are fantastic cars for the money. But with this kind of bang for buck value, they are bound to start going up in price soon enough. So let's review the Jaguar XJ8 and find out exactly what this car brings to the table for the money...

    I purchased a 2005 XJ Super V8 in 2012 with 77000 km on the clock. Now 11 years later it has almost 300.000 km. Issues were 2 throttle bodies, some water hoses and a handbrake cable. That was all. Before the Jag a drove an Audi A8 on which I spend 8000 Euros in repairs just in the last year of ownership and it had just 90.000 km on it. Compared to Audi the repairs and maintenance costs of the Jaguar are a bargain. The Jag is the best long distance car ever. Very comfortable and in form of the Super V8 pretty fast as well.

    I drive a 2004 XJ, 3.5 litre V8, since 5 years now. Great, fabulous car, nice feeling and low consumption for this size of vehicle.The only I had to face was a battery replacement, really not an issue

    Oh, dear, Mr Beard! How dare you like another Jag? You're supposed to diss every Coventry Cat in favour of Merkel Metall. Every Jag is crap. Every one. Just read almost any review and you'll see what I mean.
    As a fervent Jag enthusiast since '75 I salute your fairness and honest enthusiasm. I'd walk before I'd drive a Merkal Auto. I'm just off to drive either my XK8 or my XKR. I can't decide which!

    I purchased a lease return, Lt. blue, beige interior, 2004 Jaguar Vanden Plas with the naturally aspirated 4.2 fifteen years ago. Currently it has 62,000 miles on it and I love it, drive it sparingly during the summer months and put it up during the salty Minnesota winters. My everyday driver is a 2004 Buick Park Avenue that’s pampered & well taken care of as well, but my favorite is the Jag for it’s powerful smooth engine, transmission, great handling and whisper quiet cabin. Truly, these machines are a treat to own!

    just bought a 2007 XJR with 60k miles on it. Import from Japan import and bodywork/interior essentially look new. Paid £15k which seems steep but seen worse/older versions go for more. Just had an inspection and going to need to do castor arms (front and back) which is expensive but then should be in near perfect condition, well fingers crossed ha!

    I love my XJ. Surprisingly despite being a V8, it doesn't cost a fortune to run either even having it serviced by an independent Jaguar garage. I agree these XJ are wonderfully comfortable to drive. I also have a Jaguar XE and to be honest, these old school Jags are so much nicer to drive and have presence. 👍

    Great! One note, these cars were build from 2003, not 2004. Only knowing by having one myselves, a 2003 XJR v8, 4.2 l. Great car, but also some problems like a JAG

    X351 is the very-different looking 2009- XJ, with the swoopy rear lights.
    Facelifted X350 is X358, which you have correctly stated in your text.

    On my 5th Jag. Had 2 x V12 series 3 cars, an X300 XJR, an X308 XJR, and currently an X308 LWB. The current car (4 litre) revs best of the lot, albeit slower than the X308 XJR. After the novelty wears off the supercharger jags become irritating (like a washing machine on "fast-spin")!! A friend has a magnificent X358 Daimler Super V8 LWB. A rare car. He has spent an absolute fortune on repairs and issues with the vehicle. Now, well sorted. I have driven this car and found it fast, smooth, and relatively nimble. However, it stands too high and has lost the low, sleek look of the X300/308! Keeping my X308, which is now on 220k miles. Reconditioned autobox, secondhand diff/rear subframe, and lots of maintenance. Old Jags demand 6 monthly servicing, premium fuel, clean inlet tract & throttle body. The thing with old jags is to keep on top of corrosion and to only use a Jag Specialist for repairs & maintenance.

    Our 2006 XJ8 has been totally trouble free for the last 16 yrs of my ownership. That said, it does very low annual mileage, but it's beautiful to drive and certainly draws attention here in Alberta, Canada.

    It's a great car, but considering they were never available with the 5.0 N/A...makes me think of a project...swap for one of those...probably not easy or cheap, but I think it would be an interesting alternative, keeping it N/A, over the supercharged 4.2L or even the 5.0L itself.
    Again, just a bit under 400 hp to play with, and considering the luxury-focused nature of the XJ8...I think it would be perfect.
    Truth be told, these look much better than the X351 generation, in my book.
    Thanks for the vid!

    At the beginning of this year I got a 2006 XJ8L that is still going strong at 202k miles! It's still presentable and has some issues, but it drives great. It's a nice addition to the 07 XK Coupe I've had for 12 years. That XK is the best car of any make I've ever owned. The XJ seems to be just as robust as the XK. I'm very happy with it!

    Excellent review, not sure why Jaguar's go under the radar. Compared to the German equivalent Jaguar's are not that expensive to maintain. I bought a 2006 4.2 v8 sovereign in 2017 for £4k, over the years I've spent near enough the same on repair/m.o.t/services, that also includes the fully optioned jagdroid system. With the break discs/pads issues, I personally use Pagid brand and have had no issues. I'm sure Brembo are not a good fit for the Jag's but I know a few people still prefer them for various reasons mainly because of the way they look 😉. Also having a proper Jaguar specialist to maintain it, nothing against local 'grease monkeys' but a specialist is a specialist.

    The jaguar XJ X350 has got the jaguar Spirit, like it's predecessors, but it lacks the Jaguar Soul.
    And the jaguar Soul was fundamental in making the Lowest Luxury Sedans.
    No other Car Brand built Super Sedans that Low.
    Height of 1,37M XJ 2-3Series& XJ40, XJ 1 Series have a Height of 1,34 m , and the Height of the X300/X308 is 1,31M!
    No other Car brand offered a luxury driving experience, in such a low car focused on sportively driving.
    No other car Brand offered anything compared to the J-Gate, in a Super Sedan.
    The X350 Height is 1,44M, making it a mediocre Super Sedan.
    Yes it's fast, and light, and very comfortable, but not really comparable, to its predecessor being 13Cm lower!

    • @beardsncars
      @beardsncars  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've driven the preceding X308 and can't agree. Sure its lower, but far more cramped as a result, and its cornering manners are softer and more vague, just like an X100 vs X150 XKR

      Hello, thx for reply, I always like to hear different opinions.
      And have to admit, I have never driven the X350.
      X308 might feel cramped, but I like how it is only 1,80M in Width.(X350 is 1,86M)
      Although I have a Daimler(with CATS), that's supposed to have smoother suspension, I still think it feels quite firm, add to that, that a Daimler has 17 inch, making the ride also softer.
      I got a 2001 X308 LWB SC, and after owning it for 2 years, I started using the J-Gate more frequent.
      This really changes a lot to the Car's handling, when going into corners.
      Drive on 235 Tires, never felt the need to go bigger..
      And speaking about the X300/X308, check how beautiful those headlights are, compared to X350.
      Those hips above the rear wheels, a genuine Low rider, built by a British Luxury Car Brand.
      See the front of the Car from a distance, front wheels in camber, Like a Cat ready to catch his Pray...a true Jaguar..
      Check the beauty of that Flat trunk..
      Greetings!

    I'm a very disappointed X350 owner. I gave up watching. Filming an exhaust pipe while you rev the engine was a poor start, but then, spending so much time with the camera looking at you became off-putting. You're not the star. Try pointing the camera ahead and focus less ( a lot less) on yourself.

    • @beardsncars
      @beardsncars  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And if you spent half as much time listening instead of complaining like a typical boomer, you may have actually learned something about the car you claim to enjoy. But of course you're part of the generation we are expected to 'respect' for no apparent reason, so that would be beyond your now enfeebled mental ability...
      Oh and by the way, to answer the other equally moronic comment which you left and then tried to delete regarding why someone would point a camera at an exhaust to hear a car - that would be because that's where the exhaust gases and therefore majority of the sound come from, you grouchy, uneducated, squawking little shrew.

    Supply and demand, there is little demand for luxury cars at the bottom end of the car buying pool. An 18 year old with his first job buying a jag is going to bankrupt them before they're 21 but buy a Toyota Aygo or VW Up and they could have trouble free motoring and a big fat wallet. Insurance costs are too high, the road tax is extortionate, the fuel consumption is pretty bad, it's not wonder they can't hold value mate, they meet none of the criteria for people on the poorer end of the scale and they're of no interest to those who bought them first time round.

    • @beardsncars
      @beardsncars  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As someone who bought as 5.0 as their first car, there is a demand, limited though it may be. Either way it makes cars like these excellent bargains. And through my ownership of multiple 'risky' vehicles, none were notably worse on reliability or costs than your average newer or smaller car from the experiences of friends and family who have purchased supposedly 'safer choices.

    • @dodgywheelsandropeywiring5697
      @dodgywheelsandropeywiring5697 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beardsncars I buy cheap crap to be fair haha.. So on that note I own a Honda Civic diesel and it will soon need a new clutch, the part and labour will cost more than the car is worth so from that point of view yes I can see what you mean.
      The benefit of my Civic however is that the fuel cost are tiny, I easily get around 50mpg in mine and I have achieved on a long run 67.7mpg.
      I do think the running costs like insurance, tax and fuel put people off because I am one of those poorer drivers and that is what put me off the most. Of course I'm full of crap, I love your XK and as I'm a really short chap I have been eyeing up old XK8's with the green eye's of lust and envy for years. Also, being that they're a bit of gas guzzling heavy weight I fear it's only a matter of time before some prat in parliament makes even more impossible to own which is a really f'ing shame.

      @@beardsncars Yeah I totally agree, the tax system is beyond absurd. Every time I see a high tax on a car I think of what Teresa May said, "The UK is governed by consent"... pfft, I don't believe any of us consented to extorting people for owning or keeping an old car on the road.
