  • I'd say on the market, the top bike rack that's often discussed as being the best are the 1UP USA and the KUAT NV 2.0 bike rack. I go over my thoughts on the two bike racks and talk about which one is the best.
    I have a more detailed video about the Tesla Model Y hitch I chose here: • Tesla Model Y mountain...

    Good review. I own both, even the same colorway. My Kuat is a 4 tray and the 1Up is two. Kuat definitely looks cleaner it's parts are easier to move around. That said, the 1UP is not cheaply made and it win every time when it comes to transporting multiple MTB. This is solely based on the brilliant product design and engineering of the elevated trays. Not only that, with a rack arm for each wheel, there is a little horizontal adjustments that can be made with bike to help so the bikes fit in without touching. The problem I had with the Kuat and MTB is the because all the trays were on the same plane and all locked in at the same point, I found that I would have to loosen handlebars and rotate them just to fit all the bikes on. I find road bikes work well with the KUAT rack. Lastly, with the 1UP, one doesn't need to push the rack that far into the hitch.

    My Thule failed when a plastic part just disintegrated after years of use, not from sun damage. Cost me a wheel and other damage to my bike when it fell between rack and car while driving. I use 1Up now. Takes a minute to get used to loading and unloading but it’s built for long term use.

    Good review. My riding buddy replaced his Kuat with the 1up. The plastic parts started wearing out from sun and the rattling was unnerving on bumpy fire roads to the trail head. It looks like your 1Up is brand new. After a while you'll notice the 1UP gets easier to use. I also had some of the same complaints about the ratchet mechanism getting stuck. Now, after less than a year of use, it's buttery smooth. Here's a tip, when mounting the bike, leave one of the tire uprights close to where you normally have it, then on the other side open it all the way and you can just roll the bike to secure it. The friction on the tire will hold the bike in place. I have also found the clearance issue when I had it mounted to my Subaru Legacy GT bumper. I pulled the rack out of the receiver just enough to clear it. I leave it mounted all the time. Oh the add-ons were not mentioned but you'll be able to add up to two more bikes to the rack if necessary.

    Very good review, on 2 of the better bike racks out there, own 2 KUATS, and always need a bit of ratchet strapping to keep downhill bikes in place while travelling up service roads after chair lifts shut down, for some late season downhill thrashing. Searching for a rack to eliminate need for strapping. Can't speak for 1up, though customer service at KUAT is 9+ out of 10!

    I've had my KUAT NV 2.0 since January 2106...8.5 years ago. I have no way to know if it's better than any other rack because it's the only one I've ever owned. It's been on the back of a Toyota Highlander all that time and it's been cross country more than once. Today, minus a few user-inflicted scratches, it looks AND functions as good as the day I bought it. It may weigh a few pounds more than others, but I like it for that. It just feels SOLID. I've never had any quality issues with the rack, but when I have contacted KUAT with questions, or a need for a replacement hitch pin lock (that I failed to engage), someone got back to me in less than a day. Again, I'm sure there are other great racks available, but if I ever need a second one it will be a KUAT. I can't imagine the one I have ever needing replacement. It's that bullet-proof.

    Have you tried QuikrStuff Quik Rack mach 2? It looks like an improved version of the 1Up rack. I went with the Quik Rack because of 120lbs capacity for each tray for the 2" hitch size. Ebikes seemed to be getting heavier compared to lighter with each generation.

    The 1up Rack can handle up to 225 lbs but the Kuat is limited to 120 lbs of bike load. Inexpensive to add hitch extenders which are available in 4, 7, 8, 12, 14, 18 inch lengths. The 1up design allows for adding a third or even a fourth bike mount and not exceed the load capacity of the rack which is not the case with the Kuat unless using it for bike weighing less than 30 lbs as with road bicycles.

    I just purchased the kuat nv 2.0. I've seen tons of video on 1up but availability was scarce. The kuat is really simple to use and looks very refined and manufactured with high end tech process. Majority of the material is aluminum but there are certain smaller parts that are made of metal alloy subject to rusting. The best part is that they are replaceable and the parts are very affordable. In contrast, 1up looks like it has been put together in a home shop (just my opinion not saying that it looks bad) and the replacement parts on their website seemed more on the pricier side.

    • @DCPROJEKT
      @DCPROJEKT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree, the more I use the 1Up, the more i miss the Kuat. 1UP is just very mechanical and raw. I'm a little concerned about the long term reliability on the wheel locking arm's teeth. They seem to rub off metal a little every time you open/close the arms.
      I still really like how low profile the 1UP is though. It takes so much less space in the garage. Even when it's on my car, I don't have to pull into the garage as much as the Kuat.

      @@DCPROJEKT Totally agree. This is my #1 concern with the 1UP. I am hauling 2 e-bikes and 2 regular bikes. The e-bikes are heavy and the long-term reliability on the wheel-locking arm's teeth MUST BE 100% solid. The 1UP did not pass the test for me. At the moment, I am using the Kuat NV2.0 with Add-On. Super happy with it. It's not even an option for me to pick the 1UP given my use case. Thanks!

    A 2" hitch receiver will have its load capacity reduced by 50% with a 24" extender so it can still support 250 lbs of rack and bike weight. Using a 7" or other extender puts the bikes further away and less chance of the handlebars hitting the back of the vehicle and makes it easier to open the rear hatch without having to remove the bikes and or the rack.

    • @GROGU123
      @GROGU123 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kuat has the Piston rack which can be made into 3. But tesla only has a 160lbs limit for self supported hitch loads. So you have to be careful how much your bikes weigh. If the rack weighs 60lbs, your bikes can’t total more than 100 lbs for all 3 bikes combined. Ebikes are a problem at that weight, but high dollar mountain bikes would be fine. Road bikes would be fine as well.

    Just witnessed a 1UP failure... 4 mountain bikes on the rack at highway speed, one of the swing arms completely released due to a broken rivet in the ratchet mechanism. Luckily the bike that released was between two other bikes and wedged between the others, instead of completely falling off the rack. But that type of failure is pretty concerning, I'll be nervous to put my bike on that rack in the future. Will be interesting to hear what the response from 1UP is about that one. I owned first generation Kuat for a few years and it worked well for the most part, although the materials they used seemed kind of cheap and the chrome plating peeled off... hopefully they have fixed that issue with newer versions. The Kuat never lost a bike though and always worked despite the cosmetics. I now have a Thule Pro XTR which seems to be better than both 1UP and Kuat, but is a fair amount heavier.

    I have the 1Up Super Duty double rack and it does not provide adequate restrain to prevent forward and aft movement of the bike. It also does not support a 70 lb bike as this weight causes even more movement of the bike. For tires wider than 3.0 inches the 1up rack is not a good choice and their ramp is too narrow to support the weight and blocks their license plate holder.

    It’s interesting to me that we are at a point where someone views the 1up as cheaply built and having thin paint, scratching easy etc. ignoring the fact that it is actually anodized, made of all aluminum and metal parts, etc. while the Kuat has a ton of plastic that is going to fade, get brittle in the sun and wear over time. There is a reason you see so many 1ups around. My bro had the Kuat and then started to have issues with all the plastic and then was going to get a 1up but doing more research, ended up getting the quickerStuff rack. I've not had this experience at all. I'm on my second NV 2.0, and I'm very happy with it. I sold my last one after having it for maybe a year or two (who can measure time in the age of COVID?) because I no longer have a 1.25" receiver.
      It holds up over time, is extremely solid on the car, and I bought the wall mount so I can slide it into a hitch-like spot on my garage wall to keep it out of the way.
      Incidentally, I was super tired last week and ran through a car wash with it on the back of the truck not realizing it was on there. It stopped the entire machine, and the wheel trough broke off of the inside bike mount. The long bolts also bent for that part of the rack. Everything else was perfectly fine, so, for $50, I was able to buy replacement parts and get it back on the road instead of having to buy a new rack.

    • @nigelh2o
      @nigelh2o 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it has a slot in the hitch that allows you to slide it in or out a bit, shouldn't be an issue with the bumper.

When I do that the swing arms are only about 5 mm from the back bumper when the rack is in the storage position. How much experience do you have using less than 2" insertion?

    Seems pretty sold and has some nice upgrades from the 1up unfortunately the price point for 1 Mach 2 Bike rack plus 3 additional trays plus international shipping to a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico and
    it's wunderfull Cordillera Central Central Mountain Range would make the cost range
    soar above $2500.00 Labor dollars where in comparision a

    $1788.00 Labor dollars

    I just got the 1up rack. How did you get the cross pin in with the lock?

  • @TedKidd
    @TedKidd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love my 1up. You do have to learn how to use it best, and it is a good idea to buy a bunch of those locks at the same time so you can get them all keyed the same.
    Also, I would get the extension for pulling the release bar. Without it it's really hard to operate as this video shows.
    I also have a stop collar which allows me to position it perfectly for the hitch pin.
    I got all fat bike trays so I can use it for any of my bikes.
    Gave my Kuat to my brother in law.
    I take the rack off when not in use so I think the one up is better for that. If I left the rack on all the time would the cuat be better? IDK. I don't really like the ratchet strap approach to securing the rear wheel.

  • @donaldmei8797
    @donaldmei8797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The Kuat has some great convenience features. But the 1-Up is a lifetime purchase. Its made entirely out of anodized aluminum and stainless hardware. (Other than the receiver mount). The difference in quality isn't even close. Also, 1-Up is US made. Kuat is made of Chinesium.

  • @acegingersadventures1268
    @acegingersadventures1268 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You failed to mention a few VERY key points.
    First is weight. The 1up is much lighter. And if you get the single ( can add up to 2 more trays) it’s only 26lbs. Much easier to just throw in the trunk or hatch.
    Second is materials. Do you see plastic on the 1up? Only a tiny bit where the trays pivot. Kuat has so much plastic to degrade in the sun. And since it’s so huge and cumbersome you’ll be leaving it on the vehicle longer causing even more sun exposure.
    Third ( and perhaps most important) is how the racks touch the bike. Kuat touches the fork area and can damage things sometimes. 1up touches NOTHING but rubber. That means zero chance of frame damage. I’ve seen it-not pretty.
    Fourth: construction. Yes the 1up is basic and functional. But it’s also modular and has easily replaceable parts. I’ve damaged my 1up (totally my fault) and they happily replaced the bent parts. FREE! Nobody else does that these days.
    I’ve had everything from trunk racks to La Prealpina to Thule. NOTHING beats 1up. And I have no ties to the company other than being a very satisfied customer.

    • @DCPROJEKT
      @DCPROJEKT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      1. Weight is the almost the same. 10 pounds
      2. I actually take off my kuat rack more because it’s so much easier without having to use another tool. Yes agreed, there are some plastics.
      3. I rarely had issues with it touching the forks. I’ve noticed I only had this problem on long trips and destinations with twisty roads. Wasn’t that big of a deal
      4. Construction is litterly the worst part of this rack. Anything can be replaced with the kuat as well.. how are you gonna charge $700 for such a mechanical product. I can’t even fluidly unlatch the arms because it’s constantly getting caught in the grooves. I just came back from a $1500 mile road trip and the rack has suffered lots of paint scratches and dings. Because the rack is basically super thinly painted. The kuat actually has professional paint with a thick clear coat
      Like I said, each rack has their pros and cons. Everybody will have to chose what they think is best for their needs. To me, 1up isn’t the best rack nor is the kuat. They are the top racks, imo.

    I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

    I just used my new super duty 2" hitch rack. IT REALLY NEEDS A BETTER WAY TO UNLOCK AND SWIVEL. 1up wants you to spend $90 more, on top of the $665-$715, for their extremely poor implementation of a latch and positioning thereof, that allows swinging rack up and down!
