The director of "The Red-Headed Pigeon" episode of ABC-TV's "NYPD" series from early 1968 is actor Lawrence Dobkin, better known as "Dutch Schultz" from episodes of another classic ABC series, "THE UNTOUCHABLES" (1959-1963) Lawrence Dobkin was also the director of the classic "STAR TREK" episode, "Charlie X" in 1966.
Thanks very much for posting-commercials and all. I dig crime shows filmed on locations in NYC. This one really captured the grime of 1960s New York. I remember seeing this show when it was first on, or at least in early syndication, and even then it looked grainy, as if it was filmed in Super 8. This story, like others in the series, is a marvel of concision, with tension, some character development, and action all within a 30 minute less commercials (and less time for a next week’s episode teaser) timeframe. The centerpiece of this episode-the relationship between the reliably excellent Jack Warden and the young woman cop-nicely nuanced for the time, and charming. Even as he maintains a no-nonsense cop manner, his protectiveness goes beyond looking out for one’s fellow officer, to a fatherliness. The adorable young policewoman seems both to seek out action and prove herself as a junior cop might and to show the paternal Jack Warden her independence. Of course, this sort of story element would never fly on TV today.
I'm just blown away by seeing these commercials I remember back in the day, especially the cigarette one's! Oh! and Tis NYPD series was great too! (LOL)
I PLAYED A FEATURED "COP" IN THE PILOT, WITH ROBERT DUVALL & BEAU BRIDGES, IN NYC, FALL 1966...ROGER STURTEVANT CAST ME..GREAT SHOW...JACK. WEHO..5/2021
Love this series D., fun with all the old commercials that I recognize most of the announcers on them; I have done some voice work in my years, makes it fun. Thx.
Jack Warden played a union leader that stood up to gangsters in THE UNTOUCHABLES very heroic I use to know the announcer / actor Don Pardo he said he met Jimmy Carter and he was the kindest nicest man he ever met
I would like to know when the hell somebody is gonna wake up and put this out on DVD! And I mean THE ENTIRE SERIES! If anybody knows anything, I am welcome to suggestions!
The director of this "NYPD" segment was the same man who directed the "Charlie X" episode from "STAR TREK" in 1966, and also played "Dutch Schultz" on episodes of ABC's "THE UNTOUCHABLES" (1959-63) and that is actor/director Lawrence Dobkin, one of the finest in this business!
Joe S Hill Now that's something I didn't know , you do learn something new everyday ,, thanks . I don't want to go , I want to stay stay stay stay stay ,,,, good ole Charlie X .
Lawrence did it all, great voice, radio, voice overs, he had many credits as a director and many more as an actor, plus he was the legendary voice for Naked City, seas 2-3-4, "there are 8 million stories------"
While you're here, see if you can track down the pilot for Streets Of San Francisco. Lawrence Dobkin plays the Villain - the scariest that you'll ever see ...
THANKS MR. DWIGHT,F.! THESE EPISODES WERE SO GOOD! THEY AT TIMES MADE ME SHED A TEAR! THEY WERE THAT TOUCHING! THEY ALL NEED TO BE ON DVD!! CASE CLOSED. I'D BE THE FIRST INLINE TO GET THEM!! EARL OF EL BARRIO, NYC,N.Y. 8/29/20. 7:27PM.
More like 18 million stories when this was filmed. NYC had a much larger population than Dragnet's LA - which was sitting around 8 million at this point.
CBS owns the rights to this 1967-1969 ABC series that was produced by the now-defunct Talent Associates ("HE & SHE", "EAST SIDE/WEST SIDE", and "GET SMART!") by founder, David Susskind. It was officially released in TV syndication in 1970 by what used to be ABC Films, which later became Worldvision Enterprises in 1973, which was owned by Taft Broadcasting, and Spelling Entertainment, but was sold to Viacom in 2000, making these 49 produced episodes the property of CBS Media Ventures, formerly CBS TV Distribution.
Episode was filmed around Washington Square and the village AKA Greenwich Village. New Yorkers call it The village and I saw a lot of movies and TV shows that took place in New York City.
Ha---I love the female cop got the jump on the Lt,lol! Interesting to see what it was like for female cops back in the day having to prove themselves on the force.
This is a 16mm network film print. It was probably "bicycled" to smaller stations for "delayed telecasts" on different days and evenings {other than the national 9:30pm(et) time period on Tuesdays}.
Robert Hooks and Frank Converse seemed to appear in the late 60s and early 70s in television series, tv movies and mini series , then they seemed to just disappear. Anyone know what happened to them??????????
I met Jack Warden in 1970 while both of us were waiting on line at a DMV office in Belleville,NJ.He showed me a script from the show. The DMV office is long gone.So too is Jack.I'll be next.Hopefully, not too soon. Speaking of ABC,Belleville had a Mayor named Richard Kimbel.
@charles allan Not 100% sure what you mean, but I think I get it, and like it. This show is a real history lesson--50 years ago, women cops were few and far between, even in NYC
it's a different city, Alan..... I lived there from 80 - 98 with five years out for the Navy..... wouldn't go back now..... too expensive and the vibe has changed

*Eleven years later I became a cop in the NYPD, loved this program!*
wow while watching it I thought it was as realistic a cop show as any on TV but interesting... did it influence you to be a New York cop?
Aint nothing like the real thing
I too became an NYPD cop. The best job in the City. I grew up watching this show too.

I remember watching this when I was a high school kid back in the 60's. This was done at a time when Manhattan was rough and gritty. Great show.
Say don't you think they should reboot the series? I think they should shouldn't they?
COOL COP SHOW. When cigarette commercials were legal .

This is terrific!!!
There's a 1970 show that looks like that, THE SILENT FORCE, which is a lead-in to Monday Night Football.
Unlike N.Y.P.D., THE SILENT FORCE is made by Aaron Spelling.
