Rescue clubs and lob wedges were sneered at when they first came out as well; until enough players tried them and shot better scores.
I’ve gotten over the looks I sometimes get when I tee off with a 5 wood instead of driver, use a rescue club for the approach, chip up to the hole with a chipper and 1-putt for par. Then, I go help the others look for their ball.

I should mention that I’m 64 and instead of playing three or four rounds a week like I did years ago I now only have time for a couple rounds a month. Thus, I’ve lost my short game touch, but a chipper helps me effortlessly get the ball decently on the green.

Andy, I’m member at the CGIM ( Montreal, Canada) two courses …links and parkland. I’m around 87-89 scoring average and 50-60% do greens in regulation either par 4 or 5. It’s when I miss the green that I kill literally my game….cause I’m the worst chipper in the world. Sand is pretty decent but chips where horrible. 3 weeks ago I left my EGO asides and bought a chipper. The smart sole Cleveland. Play as a putter with the torque needed because of the grass or distance to carry. Ridiculously I chopped on an average of 5 strokes per game. I use my new tool most of the time from inside 35 yards positioning the ball in the middle for chip and run or back in the stand for more heights & spin. My 50* Rest In Peace in the stockroom.

Odyssey make the X-act chipper which retails at about 100 quid. It's a fantastic club, and can be used for anything from chips out of the fringe to bump and run, to approach pitches 80 to 100 yards out with a 3/4 swing. It can be punched from back of stance to keep under the wind.

I play of 22 and have a chipper in my bag. It's the most used club other than my driver. Anything from 100 yards in I use it, I just adjust my swing but always keep straight wrist and never break them. The wide, flat sole stops me from chuncking the ball which is a huge problem in my game. During the winter when the bunkers are wet and like concrete I use my chipper, I don't have much distance control but I always get out. It's perfect for high handicappers who accept that they will never be world beaters and just to enjoy their golf.

Hi Andy, when I started playing golf I used one of these clubs, I knew it as a jigger, I could bump and run it and even lob it over a bunker, I even played my bunker shots with it. I would use from anywhere from 50-60 yards out to right beside the green and the only reason i stop using it was I broke the shaft on it.
I now play off 7 and if you asked me one I still use most probaly not as I had to learn to chip after I broke the jigger. But definetely worth trying if you are starting out and have trouble chipping.

However I also want to have fun on the course and the chipper helps me keep my scores down and that always helps.

My old Adams A12OS set had a matching chipper I just loved. When I upgraded to a different set of clubs, I purchased from Amazon an Orlimar Golf Escape Chipper. I find a chipper invaluable for shots just off the green when the fringe is not uniform and it is much more desirable to chip over the fringe than putt through it. I've also learned how to impart backspin on the ball (and limit the roll out) using the chipper when the flag is close to the edge where you need to chip over the fringe. (I am an 18 handicap and need all the help I can get trying to get up and down because my accuracy to land on the green is not that great. I sometimes only make greens in regulation maybe 3-4 times in a round. The majority of my Pars are one-putts thanks to an accurate chip up.

@The Average Golfer. I started to play golf at 57, with a torn left MCL. Played a season & realized the pain in the Left Knee needed looking into. Had an MCL SCOPE over the Winter & in Spring, I could not only hit a fade, but hit driver straight.
Long story short, on my 2nd outing Post Surgery, I nailed a decent drive with my PING G25. Normally, after a good drive, I fat the second shot. Not this time. I nailed a Mizuno 3 wood to about 60 feet from the pin, dead center in very short cut grass.
I pulled my CLEVELAND SMART SOLE C CHIPPER & launched the Titleist AVX onto the green, slightly right with good tempo.
As the ball rolled closer to the pin, it made a move to the left.
Bottom line is, it rolled in for Eagle. It was like slow motion!
It will possibly be THE ONLY EAGLE I ever score, but I credit that chipper with it's heavy head with giving me the opportunity to get close! The fact it went in... well, that was just plain luck.

In the winter with dead grass and bald tight lies, I still use a Cleveland Niblick for pitches up to 40 yard and chips where I cannot putt. Cleveland renamed the Niblick, it is now called a Smart Sole “C” wedge or chipper. With summer conditions and decent grass, I don’t use the Niblick unless I play a course that has tight lies around the greens or one that is a links type course. Niblick statistics: 42 degree loft, 68 degree lie, D5 swing weight, shaft length 35.5 inches. My Niblick stays in the bag, year around as I like the feel and sometime use it for trouble shots like major side hill/down hill slope, in old divots, and in difficult grass (fescue or St. Augustine). An oversize grip helps you use the putter type stroke on green side chips.

If you are used to chipping with a more lofted club, it will take some practice to get used to the run-out, but it will almost always get you onto the green. As to the stigma attached to a chipper, I would remind everyone that there are no style points in golf. If it helps your game, go for it!

What most people fail to consider is how great the Putting stroke and lie angle can be in awkward situations. I've been able to hit shots you could never hit with a Wedge because of the reduced swing radius. My friends used to poke fun at it, but they've seen me make so many incredible shots they have stopped.

Like anything else, I would think this kind of club is something you’d have to work with and get used to. The value I see would be in the fringe area where you might want to get something running from one side of the green to the other side where the pin is located. I don’t think I’d want to use it from from further than 10 yards away from the edge of a green. I’ve certainly considered the possibility of getting one for winter golf when it is especially wet around the greens.

The key is to use a putting stroke without the wrists for a nice roll-out.. You can "pop" it over slight barriers with more wrist action. I don't use it outside 30 yards or over bunkers unless the bunker is narrow and close to me.

As far as popping a chip over a bunker or other obstacle goes, remember that different chippers come in different lofts. The "Square Strike" (and Mazel's clone that's the exact club but at a lower price) come in lofts from the 30's like this one all the way up to 60 degrees. Lots of more traditional looking chippers come in at 47 degrees or so, similar to lots of pitching wedges.

It will easily get over most bunkers from close up, as I know the ball will lift to just over waist height. Great out of rough too. But then...I'm a 21 handicap....

More golfers need to be realistic with their ability and skill level. I have one in my bag, a Cleveland C-wedge with the smart sole 3.0 design. They are not made to fly over bunkers. I still carry a 50-degree gap wedge, a 54 sand wedge, and a 60 lob wedge. There is space in the bag for one of these! I have Driver, 4w, 3H, and 5-PW plus a putter. I realized that I was chipping with a 7 or 8 iron probably 3-4 times per round, the famous chip and run shots (depending on the course), that's more than I hit my hybrid or lob wedge. These are way easier to use if you get a well-designed one (Cleveland) because they have a ton of bounce so you won't hit fat shots, they also have the upright lie angle like a putter so you can stand close to it. My Cleveland is 42 degrees of loft, right between my 9 iron and PW and it's 34" in length, the same as an average putter. Learn how to use this properly and I'm sure nobody will be laughing at you when you are sinking chips and giving yourself gimmie putts. This is the one I have, you should check it out, it's very well designed by Cleveland's wedge designers and been in there lineup for a while now. www.amazon.com/Cleveland-Golf-Smart-Wedge-Degree/dp/B0721GS7VL/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=cleveland+chipper&qid=1575576989&sr=8-1

Interesting video. I'm so inconsistent with my wedges, I put an Orlimar chipper in my bag and it definitely helps. I was only using my lob wedge maybe once per round, but I use the chipper several times each round since I substituted it. I don't care about the stigma, since the chipper really does help my scoring.

I grew up using a "Jigger" in the 70s. Much easier within 20yds of the green for amateurs who shoot, say, above 85 than trying to master multiple wedge clubs. Say goodbye to chili-dips, blading it 30 yards over the green, shanks, etc. Maybe I just have no pride - ha - but OF COURSE I would use it if it is legal and it helps my game!

Played with a couple of fellas years ago when I was a junior who used chippers. Work great if you struggle with other clubs but ultimately it does not take too much practice to become equally proficient with various wedges, 8iron; 7iron or 23* Hybrid which subject to conditions will also do a similar job.

I think it is funny how some people are thinking. They are fine with fitting for different shafts and heads to get as good results as possible, but they refuse to use a directional weapon like a MacGregor MachTech X chipper. I never come as close to hole a chip-in as when I am using my chipper. A chipper-shot a low risk shot compared to a 60, and golf is all about risk-management.

You were correct in your initial comments; I would NEVER play a chipper for any of the types of shots that were demonstrated in this video. In fact, I would NEVER play a chipper, or purchase a chipper at all! There are golf clubs and shot techniques that are appropriate for all of those shots, and in my opinion a chipper is not one of those clubs. The chips from the fringe would be played with a putter by me; the shots from the rough would call for my 54* or 58* wedge, as would the pitch shots over the bunker. As for the 50-yard shot into the green, unless I need to carry the ball over a hazard, I would probably hit a low runner with an 8 or 9 iron (possibly even a 7-iron).

I bought from SD a few years ago for £9.99. It was then called a Ram Tiger. It’s about 45degrees quite a heavy head and practicing over shoes on carpet upto about twenty feet one can do anything with it. Backspins like crazy and my partner and I have a lot of fun with it indoors. We would never game it because it would rarely be used. The reasons being it doesn’t work in the wet, your ball striking has to be perfect or you will constantly thin it and the loft is variable. Give me two yards off the green with a perfect lie (not bare) and a fifteen foot run out and I will leave it stone dead every time. Other than that it will be all over the place. Good fun indoors though.

Have used one on/off for years. Just bought a new one from Tour Edge - 49 degrees. Get hassled about it all the time, but from up to about 10 yards off the green (fringe, not up and over a bunker) it is deadly. Chip up and take your gimme! I have heard too many times how I just need to practice and learn to use a sand wedge, 8 iron, etc. Save your breath, I can spend that time working on mid-irons because bump and run is covered. I have yet to play any mid handicapper that chips so much better than I to cause me to want to change.

Your reaction will probably mirror most of your respondents. I remember when Cleveland came out with the Niblick. An array of golfers tested it; it routinely performed better than their wedge of choice (the exception being low handicap golfers), yet most said they wouldn't bag one. Go figure. I guess most mid-to-high handicappers would rather look like 'real golfers' than score better. I use the Wilson version and usually have the last laugh around the green. My wife uses the Odyssey version and is deadly with it from 25 yards in. Suffice it to say, I can always save more strokes with my chipper than I ever could with a three or four iron--or lob wedge, for that matter. Make fun, if you like.

I currently carry 3 Cleveland Niblick II's: 43, 49 and 56 degrees loft. The 56 is the least useful, and will likely lose its spot by next season. But they are much easier to use (partly due to upright lie, partly due to heavy heads) than traditional wedges __for Me__.

I actually own four different chippers, some are very helpful, and some are really "catchy" designs. Two of mine are interchangeably useful ( both work) better than any of my wedges with my ability inside 20-30 yards. Since so many "golf pros" have me carrying four wedges, I don't mind replacing one of them. When hit properly, the wedges work, but I rarely hit them properly. Which makes you the proudest, a proper set of wedges, or a easy lofted putt to within a foot??

  • @Softouch333
    @Softouch333 ปีที่แล้ว

Been playing a chipper this year and it has improved my chips off the green and bump and runs. The face is square and easier to aim than manufacturing a Ruyan putt-chip. The weight is greater and toe biased, so it works better out of the thicker stuff. I’ve found it to be 3 to 5 yards closer on average, and that’s often the difference of a stroke. It’s nearly impossible to stub one. I’m a good putter, and we’ve all heard putt when you can. Why not chip with a club that has a putter lie angle? Also short game touch is first to go when not playing enough, and this is just as reliable as my putter after a week or two off. My biggest problem has been figuring out which club it replaces, currently my 52°. PS: Nobody has said a word.
