The absolute sanctuary of all Nightwish fans is this song. The song goes through all stages of Tuomas Depression.
From the moment the boy says "3 minutes counting" it takes exactly 3 minutes until Tuomas suicide. At that moment the music stops and you can hear the guillotine and see Tuoma's hand movement. That is perfection.
You won't hear this song live anymore. Tuomas has finished with the topic.
    4:39 yes
Heavier? "Yours is an empty hope" Floor growls really.

Imaginaerum is a movie and comes with an album.
It was the second Anette album and songs like Storytime are part of that.
In fact when they were touring that album, they fired Anette and Floor temporarily filled in. The Wacken 2013 concert was also from that tour.

I hope this is information that you find helpful :) That was in fact a boy in the very beginning of the song as you suspected, so good ear. This song was written by keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen, and is about a 4 or 5 year period in Nightwish history summarizing a series of events that lead up to, during, and after the firing of Nightwish first lead singer after 10 years named Tarja Turunen. This song is one of Nightwish most cornerstone songs, and is an extremely intense emotional roller coaster ride that is divided into 5 acts, and each act depicts a different period of that 4 or 5 year time period, which included the hard decision to release their beloved first lead singer after 10 years, and then the intense backlash from the fans after wards, and how all of this combined affected him, and the band as a whole.
If you want to know more about what the lyrics of this song is about I might suggest researching Marko Heitala's biography called STAINLESS as he details that 4 or 5 year period in his book and goes into a lot of detail about the events leading up to Tarja Turunen's final concert as lead singer of Nightwish called END OF AN ERA. I would also research the OPEN LETTER which was the letter that informed Tarja of the bands decision to go on without her as lead singer and in fact was given to Tarja at the conclusion of the END OF AN ERA concert which was recorded in Helsinki Finland at the Hartwall Areena, on October 21, 2005. Poet and the Pendulum was then released on the album DARK PASSION PLAY on September 26, 2007, two years later.
There is only one other song which has to do with those events, and is also on the DARK PASSION PLAY album, but to this day has never been performed live. It is a song called MASTER PASSION GREED and is sung entirely by Marko. It is probably Nightwish most aggressive sounding song, and is about the role Tuomas viewed Tarja's manager and husband Marcello played in the slow division between Tarja and the rest of the band over several years time and how that also lead to the decision to part ways with her. There is no live video to react to, but there is a Lyric Video you can react to instead. Here is a link: th-cam.com/video/wS7NrPNjACI/w-d-xo.html
Tuomas has stated in interviews that MASTER PASSION GREED will never be performed live, because he is not that same angry person any longer, and to do it live would be a slap in the face to both Tarja and her husband and manger Marcello, since he has reconciled differences with them a long time ago.

Ah this song always makes me think of when I fled across the country to escape domestic violence. My dad drove 5 hours up to the airport to pick me & my cats that I bought with me then turned around & drove 5 hours home. I just remember both my parents hugging me & I just lost it. I was so so broken. I still am but in different ways. When I found one of my cats passed away last weekend I actually sang to him "be still my son, oh when did you become so cold" cos he had been gone a couple of hours by the time I found him.
So yeah I can kinda see 2 sides of it.

    First!! Waited for this!!
This song is a lyrical suicide of Tuomas (Keyboards/Composer) because of how he felt after the firing of their first singer Tarja. He couldn't do it in real life so he did it lyrically. You see Marco and Emppu go over to him to check on him towards the end. No it wasn't Floor in the beginning. Im sure it will be explained further in the comments. If you haven't had a chance yet, please read the lyrics. The realness behind it takes it up several levels. But yeah this song is pure emotion.

So well put. An artist sometimes does with their art what they cannot, or Will not, do in the mundane world ...
Yes Ana, please read lyrics and background info. This is certainly a wonderful performance, but also a real life experience from the composer. To share this with all of us is, I think, an ongoing process of both mourning and accepting the past and how it colors our lives forever.
Keep riding through the journey of this band, and those individual lives that produce these stories and performances. Can't easily think of a better example of how creativity and performance result in such stories of real life...and how much improved our simple, individual lives can be after sharing these stories with their creators and each other!

  • @darkiee69
    @darkiee69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now

Anastasia, remember the best covers are done not to be like the original, but to make that song your own. Listen, digest, get inspired, and do it your way. You obviously have the training. No one is like floor. Maybe if you sang with her 300 days out of the year. She’s in a class that very few are in. Don’t take that to heart. Use your voice. Change the key, make it hard instead of soft. You will be so satisfied when you listen to it back and say, yeah I did that. I have not listened to your own music yet(just subscribed today), but by your reaction, and the words you use, we can all tell you are a real musician. Believe me there are 1000’s of reaction videos by everybody under the sun. The ones I watch are the ones that have that visceral involuntary reaction to the music. You are one of them. I, and many others have heard this song over and over and it never stops ripping our guts out. Maybe just read the lyrics and sit on that for a while before trying to compose your own version. It is the greatest compliment to any musician when someone covers their song in their own way. For inspiration try listening to high hopes with just the boys and Marcus singing and I think you’ll catch my drift. No one is Pink Floyd but Pink Floyd, but they show you that you can be inspired by a song but not be a karaoke singer. Go watch it you’ll see. Happily bingeing today 🤘🏼🤘🏼

I especially like the rhythm of Storytime.
About ‘The Poet and the Pendulum’ boy’s voice: DPP's booklet quotation: "Lead boy soprano: Guy Elliott, 2nd boy soprano: Tom Williams, courtesy of the Reigate St Mary's Choir School, Choirmaster: John Tobin"
At the studio version and live with Anette a boy soprano sung part 1, 3, and 5. In the versions since Floor, she sings parts 3 and 5. Part 1 still done by the boy soprano.
This song is chronologically. It’s starts with part 1: The End (of their 1st vocalist Tarja) and ends with Part 5: The Beginning (a new start with their 2nd vocalist Anette).
All build on the “Five stages of grief”
    1. Denial
    2. Protest (anger)
    3. Negotiate and fight
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance
Note: this number is too personal. This cannot be covered. No one but Tuomas and Floor (and only under his auspices) are allowed to do this. It is mandatory to know where this song is all about so read “The Pit and the Pendulum” (Edgar Alan Poe) and “The White Lands of Empathica” (Stephan King) and at least the lyrics. Watch this as she speaks from her own experience of having been suicidal. th-cam.com/video/iu5ASKudIpE/w-d-xo.html
BTW, Tuomas did once already made a movie called “Imaginaerum” you can still order this on the Internet. 1st part of the story: Thomas Whitman is a 75-year-old former musician who has fallen into a coma after years of multi-infarct dementia. As he clings to his life, Gem, his estranged daughter, considers signing the non-resuscitative order. In a coma, Thomas' ghost enters a fantasy world, where he relives his life as a ten-year-old orphan.

Thanks for the reaction! What I really appreciate in it is that without the back-story or reading the lyrics before or on-line, you get the mood and the emotional message from the performance. There are reactors, who prepare and they get the stuff like "three minutes and counting" and do more in-depth analysis of the composition, singing, visual arts, etc. But it is also good to see reactions from people, who are sensitive to the musical "message". If anything, I'd like to encourage you to allow yourself to convey more of this aspect, since you seem to have a talent for it. Good luck!

When the cello begins to play during Part 3 (The Pacific - waves in the background), that makes me begin to tear up. If you want a hard song, their hardest, listen to "Master, Passion, Greed". There is no live performance only the studio cut from The Dark Passion Play". Written about the same time as Poet, by Marco and Tuomas. It's a song of hate for Tarja's husband who was probably pushing her to leave the band. Tuomas said this song would never be done live.

Here are some heavier Nightwish songs:
Nightwish "Weak Fantasy" - lyric video (Tampere 2015) Floor and Marko vocals, both music and lyrics co-written by Tuomas and Marko, Marko being the main composer.
Two other songs, in addition to The Poet and the Pendulum, inspired by Tarja's departure:
"Bye Bye Beautiful" Music Video, it's kind of weird, confusing, surprising video, but has 120M views. Marko and Anette vocals. There is the 'Making of BBB' video too.
"Master Passion Greed" album version, never performed live. Marko vocals.
BBB directed to Tarja and MPG to Tarja's manager/husband are very angry songs on
'Dark Passion Play' the 1st Nightwish album with Anette. "The Poet" is on the same album.
Marko screaming his lungs out on both songs.

Hey Anastasia, you will probably not hear this song live anytime soon. This was on of the most personal song for Tuomas - In the song, Tuomas commits suicide (precisely 3 minutes after the boy's voice annouce it) so he did not have to do it in real life. The song goes through the different phases he felt: anger, deep sorrow, fan furry (Marko singing) and his slow recovery at his parent house from depression, the last words are supposedly the one his mother told him. Tuomas says, he's not that person anymore (angry, bitter and depressed) he has moved on and so did Tarja (the first singer, who used to be the shoulder Tuomas could cry on - his friend) - Apart from masterly singing, just look at Marko's fingers going up and down his bass neck while singing - impressive how good he is. The boys' voice belongs to "Lead boy soprano: Guy Elliott, 2nd boy soprano: Tom Williams of the Reigate St Mary's Choir School who were featured on the album.

Pro tip - always have tissues handy when listening to any Nightwish song for the first time.
You will not need them every time, but it is common, and that first listening will guide you as to whether you will need them for future listenings. Some get me every time, and this is one.
This song is Tuomas' catharsis over the fact that he had to dismiss Tarja, and how much he grieved over the loss of his friend, and could not initially see any way forward for Nightwish, which is his creation and child.
He had a very deep depression and this is the song that resulted. Tuomas expresses himself in his music rather than through talking things through, and can appear very dispassionate in speech, but he is extremely sensitive - which is why his music is so intense.
Many fans blamed him, despite him being the last in the band to be pursuaded - but as the creator of Nightwish, he wrote the letter and was the first to sign it. Some of that backlash was ferocious, and he even recieved death threats, and the whole situation was hammered around in the mainstream press in Finland, not just the music press.
The final part is the words of his mother at the depth of his depression - he has the vocals cut from his in-ears as he can't listen to them and maintain his composure while performing. That is when Emppu and Marko stand around him in support - Emppu's earlier visit is to check he is ok. They are the two remaining bandmenbers from that time, so significantly, Floor stays out of it.
The song is his expression of suicide without actually doing the deed in real life. It really doesn't get more intense than that.
The two other songs in this trilogy are "Bye Bye Beautiful" addressed to Tarja and "Master Passion Greed" addressed to Marcelo, who was (certainly in Tuomas' view, and if you watch the documentaries of the time, you can see why) responsible for Tarja becoming distanced from Nightwish. None are performed anymore, or will be. Some things are best left in the past.
Floor is a real empath, and really expresses Tuomas feelings in this song - the only time she breaks with that is at the start with her windmilling - you can't catch it on the video (just Marko turning away afterward) but the look he gives her is more of a glare - if expressed in words it would be "What really? In THIS song?". I've seen it on a fan-cam. It is actually the only time I've seen her break contact with the role of the song she is performing - ever. Also the only time I've seen any disharmony between any of the members of Nighwish on stage.
Floor did offer to sing the opening soprano section (she did take over the later one from the original boy soprano) but Tuomas preferred it sung by Guy Elliott - maybe because of the connection he often uses between himself and that inner child.

I think I have just watched my favourite TH-cam reaction....ever! Your enthusiasm and pleasure are a joy to watch. And your emotional reaction to the 'Sparkle my scenery' section is normal. It gets me, every time, along with Tuomas's guillotine hand jesture. Such a powerful image. This song really does put you through the entire gamut of human emotions, and that's no fluke. Tuomas not only is a genius composer, but lyricst also. He really does have an uncanny ability to choose the best instruments and vocal lines to best tell his stories. It helps that he has perhaps the most versatile vocalist on the planet, and some of the most talented musicians around, to give voice to his inner mind. Speaking of voices - yours...wow! Very impressive. For me, I would like to hear your version of Ever Dream, first.

Boy Soprano at the start is Guy Elliott from St Mary's Reigate Choir School (UK). The part "sparkle my scenery...." was sung by another boy soprano in the original recording but Floor said she could do it and Tuomas obviously agreed! This song is a roller-coaster for sure! The voice "Now I have 3 minutes and counting...." 3 minutes later in silence Tuomas "Cuts" his head off and the lights go out with the heartbeat slowing to a stop! Even the Prime Minister of Finland became involved in the Tarja thing - pressure on Tuomas much? P.S. Marko sang the entire demo - darker, dirtier and crude words & images.

Oh this one is like the most emtotional song for them, esspecially Tuomas.. The one with the lyrics on the screen would have been a bit better. But you aid it before that you can't really focus on the lyrics the first time around so I understand. However, this song could have been an exception ;) The story behind this one.. Damn.. It's refreshing to see you so happy over this song knowing the meaning xD :P Nice for a change :3 Part 3 (and 5) made me cry, too the first time I heard it. Floor is just oozing emotion there T^T So you're not alone! ;) The bandmembers check on Tuomas frequently here too. Even Floor with her eyes since she needs to stay there and sing. It's so beautiful and sweet to see :'3 I'm not gonna tell you what it's about in details because I am sure more fans will beat me to it ;) Ah, you missed the emotional 'Thank you' from Floor at the very end! Suggestion; always listen to the very end of the video when Nightwish is performing, you might miss small but valuable and beautiful details! ;)
