    Guys,
Please don’t comment that “We weren’t ready” or “Didn’t leave a like because you don’t understand the song”
This is our channel. We do this for fun. We react to what we want to react to & we are loving Nightwish at the moment so we’ve reacted to this.
We have nothing but respect for the Nightwish Army, but some of you are really letting down the NA & putting a negative experience on a Nightwish video.
For the ones that have left nice comments/constructive feedback, WE SEE YOU & WE LOVE YOU 🤘💜

well, thats the internet, these people will be everywhere. And you are right, its your channel. So do it your way. Gabriels list ist just a guideline or a red thread to guide, if youre not know what to react to. and i think you mean a siren, its a mythycal creature that lures sailor with his/her enchanting singing to shipwreck their ships. so normaly sirens are evil creatures, but i think you only mean the enchanting part :D. and a mermaid is generally just a mythycal fish/woman creature thats known in many cultures. with that in mind, have a nice day :) I forgot, nice reaction for not knowing the backstory ;) but im sure, the others will have already informed you about everything "important":)

As long as you have an open comment section there will be comments, that you do not agree with or that offend you. Most them, however, are people who are interested in your opinion as well, not just interested voicing their own. Of course you do what you want. And your viewers will probably do the same (unless you block them). So hopefully, See you again!

Don't pay to much mind to a few over-zealous types. You enjoyed the song and that's what counts, to be honest it can be entertaining to watch people trying to figure out what the song is about anyway. I think you got the emotion behind the song even if you didn't know the meaning.👍🙂

Don't worry, it's just that most nightwish fans are 13 years old. They feel personally attacked when you criticize something they think is perfect.

      Nice reaction
Some of the best reactions for this song that I have seen have been by people not knowing the story behind the song........and some get lost in it..........Its OK either way. Unfortunately some think you must do a certain order of reactions, I prefer a varied approach as you get a good mix of reactions as they find there way through the varied mix of Nightwish music.

I think it's nice to see react people to this song without any information in front and experience for themselves what feelings this masterpiece give them. I also like to see them react to it with the full story behind all of this, with lyrics, because that must be a total new experience. Good job guys. Like to see you reacting.

I don't think the majority of Nightwish fans are "upset" if a reactor doesn't do the background research before watching this song. Rather, to us fans, once you know the history behind the song, it just takes on such a greater emotional feeling. And we just want you to experience that too.
But you're right, it is your channel, so do as you please, that makes you happy! :)

It’s a long story, but it was tuomas’s struggle with depression of having to fire Tarja the original old Singer. Tuomas is the keyboard player and headfounder of the band and pretty much write all the music. Im sure you Will get the longer story from others. Have Fun with the nightwish journey, it’s long but Fantastic 😉

    Makes is becomes gold 💫
    The whole band completes it,
    With this beautiful music
    It is very emotional 😢
At the end, Marko and EMPPU go to
    Tuomas and support their friend,
    That's brother love 💙💙💙
The poet and the pendulum, takes approximately 14 minutes.
The most beautiful song I've ever heard.

I know you got the ... " You should have done research!" comments. Ignore them. What you gave was a great reaction to a song you knew nothing about. The music and verse carried you through the emotions. I could see it on your faces as certain parts came in. Now that you know the back story, go back and watch it again. There is a version with the lyrics as well. It gets even more emotional when you see what they are saying. This song makes me cry every time.

Fantastic reaction again guys, you really dove in at the deep end with this one. Most reactors take their time getting to it as it has quite the back story attached to it, but I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless.👍🤘
Essentially the song was written by Tuomas (the keyboardist who writes and composes 95% of the songs) as a kind of symbolic suicide by song after he received a ton of backlash and blame following the departure of the original vocalist, Tarja and fell into a deep depression. On top of the backlash he received was the fact that Tarja and him were also friends since childhood and obviously that would no longer be the case, which of course made it even worse.
That's it in a nutshell, I'm sure someone will come along and explain it section by section in considerably more detail than I have but that's the bare bones of it.
Looking forward to the next one, may I suggest "Storytime" from Wacken 2013 next?😁🤘

awesome reaction. This piece has a very special place in my life. I know the back story but this piece is also an anthem for those people with mental health issues such as depression with suicidal thoughts, Yep I am one of those! Also in the Pit and the Pendulum Poe talks about the point at which you both give up hope and accept the end, which you really get the sense of in this.
If I may I would like to give you my interpretation of the lyrics and what they mean to me.
The first part, which you note starts with the words the end!! Is taken from Stephen Kings Tower series, the white lands were the home of a type of vampire that fed on emotions, (empathy), so a person left feeling nothing, empty and without emotion.
In the second part, those lines expressing a feeling of futility, all same old same old yet, hating how you feel, then the verse seems to express the effort of trying to pretend to be ok, hence those two faces, one for everyone else and the real one that is private, no one to turn to for help as the people around you seem as upset as you so no shoulder to cry on so you just carry on pretending becoming that whore for the cold world. Then there is the remembering back to when all was good, yet you cannot get there despite everyone telling you “you are ok, it will be fine” till those words just sink you even further into the mess.
Then we have the Pacific, oh wow, the wishing and planning stage, the beautiful sea, just wishing it was over, that you could be under the waves, beneath the pain tucked into that beauty., last goodnight kiss and a valentine that ends everything.
Then that part that starts with being afraid, being raped, not in the traditional sense but feeling violated, alone and bloody scared, For Tuomas, feeling that those who he felt should have been there for him somehow betrayed him, a not uncommon feeling with severe depression, feeling that even life betrayed you, also again the mention of the tide and drowning, many see it as the perfect death!
On a side note here, three minutes and counting, yep exactly three minutes to the point that Tuomas simulates the blade.
Here also note how the music becomes chaotic, mirroring the thought process of someone planning their own death, no logic, well there is but only to the individual. Yet also a sense of excitement and of a journey, proceeding the calm.
Then the passion play, traditionally passion plays were performed at Easter and were about the death of Christ, and Tuomas plays with us a little here, “second robber to the right of Christ! Well at the crucifixion there was only one robber either side of Christ but in the painting The Last Supper the person second to the right of Christ is Judas!!!!!
Then of course the symbolic death and the slowing faltering heartbeat.
The beginning or last part of the piece are the words that brought Tuomas back from the edge. In his case words from his parents but many of us will have people who were there at just the right time and who cared enough to be the rock and love us enough to hold on.
If there is a message in this work surely it is to be kind, to look out for each other and if you can be there, you never know you may just save a person’s life. As someone did mine.

I have no patience for the "Nightwish Army" folks who want to dictate every reactor's whole journey. I came back into the Nightwish fold well after Floor joined and heard Ghost Love Score first, then Poet and the Pendulum. Didn't know the story... didn't change my love and respect. You guys keep doing you. Also, he's right, it was the sirens that lured sailors to their shipwreck demise.

i cant agree more. problem is- in my humble opinion-, like nowadays the ones who do go extreme are the ones who are loudest in word/text/ etc. the NW Army i know and some for real, are absolute ok with all who hears and watch the Band, and if disagreeing with Statements just accept as normal diversity of Taste- but do not post anything or like/dislike. my oldest long time Friend and me had nightlong discussions about tarja/ anett switch and the songs 2 albums back/ forth. i still love my bro and so he do(me, not himself:D) bcs we accepted the others opinion, just didnt go into the same direction. something the internet build up is this imaginary wall, behind some think they could do anything unrespectful or intimidating etc. they want bcs no one ever will hold them in charge in the real world. sadly, their right.

The main difference between sirens and mermaids is that sirens are usually depicted as evil temptress’ that lure sailors to their deaths, while mermaids are usually depicted as peaceful, non-violent creatures that try to live their lives away from human interference.

This is a song about Tuomas (keyboard, composer & founder) In 2005 the band fired the 1st singer Tarja and they put an open letter out to the world why and the hatred from everyone directed at him hurt him bad and depressed him. so he wrote this as an on stage suicide to help put it behind him. . The last part (Mother & Father) are words spoken to him by his parents and the two band members that had voted to expel her "Marco & Emppu" stand next to him showing there support even after all these years.

To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano. "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
If you noticed in the video the two guitarists went over and stood by him for support, because they know how hard it is on Tuomas.
Check out Master Passion Greed and yet Bye Bye Beautiful. These songs are continuing that story. If Poet is about feelings of Thomas in general, then Master Passion Greed are Tuomas's words to Marcelo, husband of Tarja, who in fact stealed her from the band, and Bye Bye Beautiful - are his farewell words to her.

Tuomas committed suicide in this song so he wouldn't to do it for real. Now go back and listen to it again with this in mind. Most Nightwish songs don't require us to know the backstory. This one does.

    Hello Gamers.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

Totally get the Darnassus reference. I have often thought the same thing but more so with the instrumental section in the middle of Ghost Love Score - has that dreamy night elf lands feel. I didn't know the back story either when I first listened to this but I also wasn't having to do a reaction in front of ppl on camera. When you listen to it alone, without distraction you can 'feel' the emotions in it even without knowing what it is all about. It's a wonderful thing that Tuomas chose to 'commit suicide' through his music and kept himself safe to eventually find peace from all the torment. Now we can all enjoy his amazing compositions - love to Tuomas and Nightwish.

This is one of those songs that is such a work of art that you don't need to understand a word of it or the context for why it was made to be moved to tears by it. It's such a raw emotional experience. I also listened to this one without prior knowledge of its backstory, and I still felt an intense connection with the emotions it conveys, and that made the experience of it so much more personal to me. It doesn't even matter that I knew nothing about the specific scenario it was about and my own experiences were something else entirely, I still *felt* it, I *felt* that catharsis-- and that's exactly what art is supposed to do.

Thanks for a great reaction to a great song. This is an extremely emotional song but you don't necessarily need to know the backstory in order to enjoy it. I'd heard it hundreds of times before I knew what it was about😕
In particular, I love how Tuomas borrowed from "The Pit and The Pendulum", a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear.
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he was angry with God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I wonder if Toumas's anguish was caused not because he fired Tarja (the original singer) from the band, but because he felt publicly tortured and judged by his so-called fans for doing it the way he did. I believe the score was arranged into 5 separate acts to represent the 5 stages of grieving.

Although there is a serious backstory to this song, the composition and Floors singing is strong enough to catch that and make you feel the seriousness of it. And that is what I saw in your facial expressions Shannon. At a certain point your face changes from ‘happy joy joy’ to ‘wait a minute, there is something going on here’. At the end it looked like you were fighting to hold back the tears. And that is what this song does to everyone who listens to this masterpiece over and over again. I heard it at least a hundred times and I still have watering eyes. Once you know the backstory this will be multiplied by at least a factor 10.
Tarja, the first singer, was loved by a lot of the fans of NW. Apparently the troubles started when Tarja met her future husband Marcelo and there were rumours that Marcelo convinced Tarja that she was the leader, the real star of the band, it was ‘Tarja featuring Nightwish’ and not Nightwish as a whole. Tuomas, Marko and Emppu accused Marcelo of greed and gold digging. Marcelo told Tarja she would be better of going solo and pushed her to do so. Sometime later she announced she was going solo and pursue a solo career. Some other rumours were that Tarja didn’t want to travel with the band anymore and that she went on tour with different airplanes or other means of transport; that she didn’t attend to rehearsals anymore; that she had become a diva. Result: the group dynamics changed. Maybe these are rumours, maybe these are facts. We will never know the truth, but they were both hurt. They knew each other from school and since the start of Nightwish.
One thing for sure: there were mistakes made, from Tarja’s and Tuomas’s side, who led to the split with Tarja.
Read the two letters, the one from Tuomas, Emppu and Marko: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen and the answer from Tarja: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen
Nightwish is big in Finland and the split was national news. The fans bashed Tuomas for doing this. The criticisms were devastating. The Poet (Tuomas) and the Pendulum (the critics, “The blade will keep on descending” - the critics will never stop. “The world will rejoice today as the crows feast on the rotting poet”, “Spitting on his grave as they came”). The only way he could cope with it was ‘killing’ himself musically. And the ‘pendulum’ is still descending because all these years later some fans still blame Tuomas.
There is one sentence in TPATP that hits me hard every time. “I can not cry cause the shoulder cries more”. Is it a way of Tuomas saying he will miss his childhood friend, his confidant, the one he goes to to pour his heart out and find solace? Because ‘the shoulder” (Tarja) cries more?

Yup, very early to be watching this masterpiece in anyone's Nightwish journey, but as you say, its your channel, you do what you want to.
This song is about such a monumental/pivotal moment in the Nightwish story, and no doubt others will fill you in on the backstory (the sacking, the open letters, the fan hate, the depression and suicidal thoughts etc etc) it contains a lot of metaphors and symbolism that it might be worth doing a bit of reading and then re-watching it so it makes more sense.

Summary of this story behind of the song: Prior to 1996, Tuomas Holopainen, keyboardist & founder of Nightwish didn't like Heavy Rock and Metal, always classic music such as Mozart. He studied music at Finland's top institute for music theory. Then one of his friends took Tuomas to a rock concert, I think that it was Guns N Roses for his 1st time. He loved it! One of his childhood's friends is Tarja Turunen, original singer for Nightwish also classmate at the school joined him and Emppu Vuorinen, guitarist for then acoustic project. Jukka Nevalainen, original drummer also started with the band. Tuomas wanted Nightwish to be more metal band combining his love for classic music and metal equals Symphonic Metal in 1996. In 2002, Marko Hietala, Bassist joined Nightwish until his retirement in early 2021. Then in 2005, Tarja was fired or left the band. Fans of Nightwish blamed her departure on Tuomas. He went into depression and put Nightwish on hiatus that lasted until 2007. In 2007, Nightwish hired Anette Olzon to replace Tarja as their singer. She lasted about 5 years. Then comes Floor Jansen in late 2012 or early 2013 as then band's touring vocalist for their tour. Note: This is tour that has Floor doing Ghost Love Score in Wacken's Festival in 2013. Prior to this stop, Tuomas and band were traveling in Western US for concert stops. Floor had to learn all Nightwish's songs in 48 hours. After 2013's tour, Floor Jansen became official member of Nightwish. Tuomas was contemplating on suicide during turbulent times in 2005-2007. But doing actual suicide, he wrote The Poet And The Pendulum, Tuomas committed suicide metaphorically and musically.

He was right. In Greek myth Sirens were "dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. It is also said that they can even charm the winds." (Wikipedia) And strangely in myth "sirens were believed to look like a combination of women and birds in various different forms" (again Wikipedia). More modern artists have pictured them basically as being just naked women.

this song is quite deep and complex
You can easily tell how much musical training you have when you can get this much information just from one listen without looking at the lyrics and a quick read at the back story. Indeed the song was inspired by The Pit and the Pendulum and a major depression "Tuomas" (the pianist and founder of the band) fell into after firing "Tarja Turunen" from the band in 2005 (first vocalist of the band).
    The five acts are:
I.- White Lands of Empathica : All of the first part of the song with just the orchestra and the Soprano child singing.
II.- Home: (2:41) Starts when the band joins the orchestra and ends when the cello enters 4 or 5
III.- The Pacific: (5:50) Starts with the Cello-led bridge (5:50)
IV.- Dark Passion Play: (9:01) The act that gave its name to the whole album. It starts after with the aggresive violin part and goes all the way through Marko's growling, Floor's next sung part, the following chorus and the narration ending with the chorus crying "Save me!"
V.- Mother and Father: (12:00) Starts with the heartbeat at and the orchestral section with the Oboe solo. comment it speaks about the protagonist reuniting with his parents in the afterlife, that's why there's a mourning oboe but Floor's voice is more soothing than mourning since she is speaking from the parents' point of view ("Be still my son, you're home…"), comforting their newly deceased son.
Another fun little trivia about this song is that there are 4 officially released versions sung by different people: The Demo Version sung in its entirely by Marko since they were in the middle of auditions for Tarja's replacement available in the The Sound of Nightwish Reborn album, the Album version (Dark Passion Play) and the Live version (Made in Hong Kong… And In Various Other Places) sung by the then-vocalist Annette Olzon and Marko and the Live version at Wembley (Vehicle of Spirit) which is the one you just reviewed sung by Floor and Marko. If you compare all three different lineups they all sing and interpret the song very differently, the Demo version even has some different lyrics that are a bit harsher and were then reworked.
Now for a couple more reaction suggestions: You've heard Marko growling here but if you want to hear his smoother singing voice I recommend The Islander (any live performance) and if you wanna find out if Floor can still sing after growling I recommend Yours Is An Empty Hope, also from Wembley Arena (the Vehicle of Spirit live show)

@@randymarple9830 maybe , maybe not. It's really not necessary to know. The music/vocals tells the story good enuf. I don't like dive into any back stories or personal lives of bands/ artists. Sometimes it really destroyed the feelings i had for a song and it turned out to be not so or the back story to the artist turned me off.
Music should be personal. Unlike books. (but then one colors the setting and characters to personal feelings)

The suggestion this song is about “the backlash” for firing Tarja is a common minimizing of the whole story. People repeat this idea because the biggest Nightwish fan page (not run by Nightwish) says that’s what it’s about. It’s so much deeper than that. It’s also about the wreckage that was happening in the band because of her attitude, his dream falling apart, songs written around her vocals, friendships collapsing, people taking sides, likely infatuation with her (the fur will fly for that comment), and her husband creating division and being greedy. Do people really think Tuomas is that shallow to be all twisted up over angry fans?

Sirens lured men to their deaths by singing, iirc they're Harpies, and are often shown with bird wings, or a woman's head on a bird body, other times just alluringly beautiful women, and from time to time portrayed as mermaids, but that is a corruption and conflation of other stories and myths. Odysseus plugged his men's ears, had them tie him to the mast, and told them when he stopped struggling, they would be safe from the sirens and then could untie him, so they were able to avoid being drawn to their deaths by their singing.

Always amuzing to read comments for this magical track.
Honestly it's hilarious how literally many fans(part of Nightwish army?) takes the lyrics.
As a result, even individual sentences have been constructed as mythical, many say truth-based fact stories. Just as people tend to make something read or heard easier for them to understand.
I wonder if there is any way that the "poet" has deliberately left room for interpretation in his texts. As poets often do. 😉

To everyone thinking "not enough research," or "they don't know the entire backstory of a band and song I like," this song was partly meant for you. "Tuomas was called from the cares of this world... His friends spitting on his grave as they passed." You all are the "friends" in this song spitting on his grave, being hypercritical and rude for no reason other than them not knowing something much like they were to him at his decision with Tarja

Hi guys, had a bit of a break from social media but just had to click on this when it appeared on my feed. I actually like the fact that you went in at the deep end with this number - not many people do and they all get roasted for it - sure, there's a significant back story to this song which you both immediately recognised but I think it's a refreshing way to approach songs - as I'm sure many have now filled you in about the song meaning and the lyrics - I'm sure you know by now that those lyrics re. Raping etc are not to be taken literally but figuratively - like you, I was also a bit shocked by this in first listening - I've now heard this god knows how many times and I never tire of it. My song suggestion is 'Seven days to the Wolves' also from that same Wembley Concert - it's a solid banger! Keep em coming guys - more Babymetal too!! 😆

I would recommend listening to Nightwish - The Islander (Live At Tampere). It really is a showcase of Marko the bass player and male singer who surprised you.

This is my favourite song of all time! If you care to take the time and research it a little bit it definitely enhances the experience. If not enjoy it the way it is. 😉

Now, do Nightwish - Greatest show on earth! You got two options, either Live from Tampere (with synchronized fireworks) or Live from Wembley (featuring Richard Dawkins)!

enjoy and be honest ... a lot of people understand and know everything about the band ... the say .. just be a fan and ask what is the story or the background of a song ... they will explain it to U 2

I listened to this song without knowing the backstory. it moved me. When I did the research and came back to it I had more of an appreciation for it and respect for Tuomas.
