    Spirit Stones are made out of psycho-receptive crystals called waystones, which are grown from something similar to Wraithbone. At the moment of the Eldar's death, the stone acts like a 'psychic trap', absorbing their psychic self and preventing it from entering the warp and being consumed by the nemesis of the Eldar race: Slaanesh.
    Wraithbone is a psycho-plastic substance used by the Eldar for many different tasks, including the construction of buildings, ships and weapons.
    Wraithbone is essentially solidified warp energy that is manipulated by a Bonesinger into any shape that is required. It is stronger than any known plasteel and harder to damage than adamantium, and will naturally repair itself, though the process can be sped up by a Bonesinger. Being created from the warp, Wraithbone has innate psychic abilities allowing it to be used as a communications pathway as well as structural support. It carries psychic energy much as a cable carrying current does, as well as containing psychic shields to protect the occupants from the warp.

      @@artificialgravitas8954 yeah, if there was a tier list I'd say it goes Dreadnought then Wraith Knight and Hell brute in last. Dreadnoughts are revered as heroes who were too valuable to be lost to death and so are given even greater weapons and armor as well as being a cultural heart of their chapter. Wraith Knights are sometimes just straight up forced to happen with one account I read of a brother waking up in a Wraith Knight after losing his twin sister only to be told if he refuses they'll still be keeping his sister's stone. But at the very least they are still revered to a degree plus forcing them is seen as a horrific yet necessary evil. Hellbrutes could serve their gods and brothers loyally for centuries only to get stuffed inside one of those things so someone else can get a higher position in the warband or even just so they have a Hellbrute to name use of.

    according to the designer, the bumps on Eldar armor/vehicles that aren't gems are basically compartments for the circuitry and stuff that runs it. The same designer also said only beveled bumps are meant to be gems. And yeah, it is one soul per walker. If you look at their backs you'll see a big rune. That's the cover for the chamber that holds the soulstone (it'd be kind of silly to place an eldar soul on the edge of a gun)

      @Tremadog102 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Add to that the fact that Eldar like to look stylish so they are often covered in gemstones, not every gemstone is a spirit stone. I like to paint a lot of the blisters on Eldar wargear as gemstones even though I am aware they are not spirit stones. Also, a minor correction, I wouldn't say spirit stones "power" Eldar constructs, more that they are used to control them. I recall in one Eldar novel a Craft world was passing through a solar system to collect energy from the system's star so they power their tech using other means I think. Finally, one of the Craftworld Eldar fliers uses weaponized soul energy to terrorise their enemies. It's generally considered an abomination by their own race.

    • @Draxynnic
      @Draxynnic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Tremadog102 Yeah, the ships use solar power for a boost, but the Asuryani seem to only use it in space. It's possible that they have some form of really efficient battery that allows them to store energy between passages through solar systems and to power their planetside equipment, although according to Battlefleet Gothic tabletop, the batteries are apparently not capable of keeping their warships moving at full speed without a solar power boost. It's possible that solar collectors large enough to be effective are just too vulnerable in ground combat.
      Drukhari do have... I think they called them "aether collectors", which are similar but instead of collecting solar energy, they collect energy flowing out of Commorragh through the portals they typically launch realspace raids through. I think that's just an excuse for making Drukhari vehicles look more like floating pirate ships, though.

    I swear, Wraithbone constructs (and Eldar in general) are one of those things that GW seems to have the hardest time depicting as badass as the codexes claims them to be.
    Like the lore always says how tough and fast it is and how it can repair itself from damage but we always see them getting destroyed by the stupidest stuff.
    I'll never forget how the Eldar are supposedly faster than a bullet but in a Hammer and Bolter episode we see a Dreadnought slowly walk behind a group of them, rehearse a speech and then gun all of them down as they just stood there.

      tbf Warhammer 40k suffers the similar problem that comic books can have, where characters can get so strong that it makes it incredibly difficult to write any steaks or do what you want when you have to contend with a strong power scale that can go against the story you want to tell. Only difference is that GW can't (without some type of backlash) really destroy the universe to remake it again like comic books can.

      To most people, I think they see the two as the same since the procedures can overlap and its primarily the reason for the procedure that changes as you can do plastic surgery for costmetic reasons.

      Soulstones are individual to the stones and often the torment of being locked consciously caused them to be pure pain and rage - "the Spirit of Khaine posesses them eventually". To old lore: greater the size, stronger the original Psyker, and you DID have multi-nodes and using some soulstones for power rather than assisting, usually in the "weaker" ones - and the larger the soulstone the more of that person remains consciously, also, which in Wraithknights you need Aeldari born-twins to pilot them because of the sheer power of those crystals they need to have the psychic connection bridge-shared to dilute one burning out, but one ends the main channeling focus, and eventually it burns the first out and the other pilot goes insane from the loss of their brother and flood of psychic energy, going on rampages against both friend and foe.

    • @SeanHoltzman
      @SeanHoltzman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      And if memory serves, the spiritstones required to power D-scythes for the Hemlock Wraithfighters are extra powerful, PLUS due to the power and the needed hyperconnection to successfully pilot the jets effectively, and power their psychically-oppressive soul-paining emnity and design of the Wraithfighter eventually has the spiritstones fry the pilot alive. It's not an If, it's a when. When the pilots are done if they didn't burn out they generally never recover properly and get early-turned into spiritstones to put them out of their psychotic misery

    Something to point out the Path of the Seer is for all eldar psykers. Each discipline of the Eldar is broken up into the path system which to help resist the old eldar ways. Each path takes you down different subsections of the eldar world. So Path of the Seer, Path of Command, and Path of the Warrior, are the main big 3 that warhammer mainly concerns itself. Seers are then broken up into essentially temples, Farseers, Spirit Seers, and Bonesingers. The three are the main "lost" in the path eldar that are there, where Warlocks are more intraining eldar who have walked several paths.
    To add to the wraithbone subsection all those little dots on eldar armor is more like a matrix, essentially key points of the item allow communication between wraithbone. Armor and items in general have these sections to allow it. Spirit Stones are most often location on the chest, or the heart of a suit. The ones on the top are not a spirit stone.
    As an addenum Wraith Knights are pilot by living pilots most times, there is an example of twins or familal members both controlling at the same time. So its more like Gypsy Danger from Pacific Rim, you need two pilots in order to control such a monster. Sometimes you have a dead family member helping you control it sometimes you don't. Heres a fun bit of lore from the Lexi : "The psychic link between an Eldar and their twin is like no other, and this bond allows them to sense the proximity, mood, and even thoughts of their counterpart. If the twin were to die, the surviving brother or sister will often fade away in sympathy. Sometimes, when such a division takes place, the surviving twin will sacrifice what is left of his life to pilot a Wraithknight. The essence of the dead twin is transferred into a Spirit Stone attached to the machine, whilst the surviving sibling is put into a near-permanent trance within his cockpit."
    Spirit stones are a limited quality, they are often called the Tears of Isha. Isha in her way tried to get around the blockage set up by Asuryan that prevented Isha from talking to her Children ( the eldar), and so she had Vaul create the Spirit Stones. These would allow her to communicate with them. So in an essence they are communication device with their now trapped god. Sometimes she will whisper to them cures and other things to help prevent catastrophe. Khaine found out about Isha's treachery and basically started a War in Heaven 2.0, where Asuryan the idiot, let Khaine do whatever he wished to her and her husband Kurnous the god of the hunt imprisoned. And tortured.. Which then started ALA a god war between Vaul and Khaine... So yeah it led to kerfuffle. And eldar mythology is so cool.
    For Eldar books I'd recommend the Eldar books about the Phoenix Lord Asurmen as his book shows prefall eldar society, and 'during' fall eldar.

The only place in the galaxy they can be made is on the Eldar home worlds, but those don't exist anymore, and very few Eldar dive into the eye of terror to try and dig some up, so every soul stone lost is both a soul lost, and a loss of ability to bring back future souls from battle. This is part of why Eldar are so hesitant to fight, as they are losing both their population and the ability to protect their dead.

    I've read the "Path of the Eldar" trilogy, and its both really wonderful and frustrating. I really enjoy the look into how the Eldar think and how the Eldar function, it comes across as both really understandable and alien.
    ...But this is the era of books where Space Marines had to be top dog, and so when the Space Marines show up to a fight you have them punching way above their weight. All the really cool build up about all the epic things the Eldar characters can do sort of dissolves into nothing at that point, and this was a trilogy that was supposed to be ABOUT the Eldar. I'm happy I read them, but what I wouldn't give to change some key points out of frustration.

    i tend to assume the multiple stones all over eldar infantry and vehicles serve one of two purposes, or both. On infantry, its most likely the multiple stones are a failsafe in case some of them are broken or destroyed in combat, so their souls have a much greater chance of being captured after death. On vehicles, knights, titans etc, it may take multiple soul stones to power and operate. Stones could also be used to power their armor and weapons.
