UA’s unit choice was so massive that you could stick to army theme and almost never deviate and still win games. I wish triple A strategy games had that
Fire Storm over Kronus and Titanium wars are goated for making the space marine and imperial guard heroes Gabriel Angelos and General Sturn respectevely. Two of the best dawn of war characters!
I remember the old XV15 Tau Mod days back in ‘03. Some dude had begun making Tau models before the game was even released and built this entire community around it. He would come out with just screenshots of Tau Fire Warriors for years and everyone would shower him with praise. They didn’t deliver anything before Dark Crusade was released, and the whole community collapsed. What a strange cult of personality it was.
YES the SoB mod especially! The music choices for that mod were great, and it still has some of the best modelwork I've seen in any DoW mod to this very day. Also loved having Arbites (my beloved) as your starter units.
@@Wormopera its their ip so yes, now if they make a legally distinct ip that is just the same but altered someway then they can kick rocks. Like the new project the Astartes shorts guy started.
@@Wormopera Not really. TTS was pretty safe under parody law and all that, but the way lawfare works is that you use your gigantic budget to threaten your target into surrender without a fight. I didnt play it when it released (probably 2020,cant remember) but I remember it and wanted to mention it, hello fellow veterans. Sad to see mission packs didn't really get anywhere.
One thing that you haven't mentioned is that Firestorm over Kronus' team have laid foundations for the ones you covered afterwards in terms of assets. Space Marines you see in Titanium Wars? FoK. Striking Scorpions? FoK, etc etc. The community is old and many people have come and gone yet some veterans who were there from the beginning remain (like thudmizer aka thudo). Many names have, however, been lost to history with the relicnews forums being gone, which was the hub where mods grew, including FoK itself.
That's why I originally played FoK beyond gameplay: it was the only mod to make Space Marines look properly badass. Plus I always loved Striking Scorpions because of it :)
@@mojewjewjew4420 it was shut down, I don't know why, it was not a Relic forum, it was Relicnews forums, an unofficial forum, not run by Relic themselves
The issue of DoW mods sticking to just using Warhammer as a setting is a common thing with RTS mods. A lot of C&C mods just do Nod and GDI or Allies and Soviets again, instead of trying to RTS-ify other settings.
I'm only 10 minutes in the video, and I just remembered ho much I love your editing. It's just so fun to watch ! I never liked how Firestorm replaced the Sisters with the Inquistion. I always loved how Titanium Wars replaced the awful IG Heavy Weapons Team (1 guy turns into 2 guys with the push of a button, exept it only turns one unit at a time, so if you have several, you have to cycle) with the actual heavy weapons team from the tabletop. I too didn't like the big mods because of unit bloat. I personally don't like Titans and Knights, I think the biggest units should be the ones from the base game.
I’d love to see the history of mods as well. How the nid, iron warrior, and death guard mods go back to winter assault. With the last two being purely in French.
Not sure if it's necessarily worth covering, but I think you should check out the Redux mod. Rather than just piling on as many new factions as the engine can possibly handle it instead tries to polish and rebalance the base game, and only add small amounts of new units to fill some of the gaps in the vanilla rosters. It's also trying to remaster the Tartarus campaign in the engine of Soulstorm, which is pretty interesting.
I still remember that i was watching a Tribiute type videos for Warhammer many years ago (10+ i think) and i saw Firestorm over Kronus trailer (this one with white text on black background with chaos space marine laugh) a i was in LOVE
Ah, I remember mods like Inquisition Deamonhunt and Tabletop Round Up mostly cos I discovered them by the trailers that got made for them. Probably some of the first mods I tried. Always had a soft spot for the No Limit mod to make absolutely huge artillery batteries. Also it made Eldar/Tau silly broken - Avatar of Khaine increases production speed and that would stack, meaning you could instant spawn units and Ethereal's bonus to HP/Morale also stacked so you could have fire warriors with 10x the health of a baneblade. Good times.
I would like to throw in the fall of cyrene mod as a suggestion its a pretty neat fan made prequel to dawn of war 1's campaign and it has little coverage to so hope this will make it to part 2 Oh and theres also the galaxy on fire reloaded mod to which is also compatible with all the dow 1 games including dow 1 and winter assualts campaigns they basically give new units for all of them and back port units introduced in dark crusade and soulstorm into dow 1 and winter assualts campaigns as well
Firestorm *was* good, but I remember the whole scene devolving into triangles, flips and sri-mechs over time. Really took the WAR out of ROBOT WARS. This isn't conflict, it's a traffic collision, etc etc grumble grumble. Looking forward to the Bloodlines video.
Thanks for briefly touching the subject of non Warhammer 40k mods for Dawn of War, because making something like Age of Sigmar, or even something in Warcraft universe in this game's engine would be a great idea but... I don't see anything cool like that and I'd love to play something like this
As a fellow nerd who lived in Norfolk (North Walsham), your references hit so close to home. Hypnodisc was one of my favorites, and I even got to see a robot wars episode filmed live. Nothing will ever compare to the freakout at the first ever self-righting mechanism, though.
There was one mod idea for this game that I wish some one tried to do which is a DOOM mod seeing as some one did try it in C&C but it never got off the ground sadly. A Doom rts would be neat seeing as it could do like at least a four army type thing or even more.
I really, really, hope you take a little bit of time to cover the OG Dawn of war mod "Fall of Cyrene". It's a fan made campaign mod that tried to explain the events of Cyrene that had been referenced by Gabriel in the first game, and you command only four space marines. It kinda predicted the style shift dawn of war would have for DoW 2.
I dont remember fully ehat went in that mod but it doesn't portray a Canon or very compelling story, yes the gameplay of only 4 was great, i dont think they predicted it, more like it was a valid gane design and we see whatever was left of relic change the styles radically between dow 1,2 and "3"
I remember downloading a mod for DC called dowkingdom that replaced the campaign with it's own unique map and it was completely wild. Even on easy the enemy could easily get 5 bases, but you got 3 of each retinue instead of 1. Which helped me use them more in combat and for initial fights
I can't believe I only just noticed the blue lions house symbol [from fire emblem three houses] being used as an imperial guard regiment banner at 2:13.
Honestly I'm with you on UA. It's cool, but there's just too much going on. I'd say of UA, FoK, and TW, TW is my favorite. FoK is a very close second though. I remember an older version that somehow actually worked with the campaign...sort of. The gate in the Chaos Stronghold and the Vindicare Assassin in the IG Stronghold were outright invincible (the latter had armor class: immortal), the Tau stronghold would always crash the game, but damn if it wasn't just so much fun.
I am personally fond of the new faction mods. I was always on the forums, looking at the individual mods that are being pt out or worked on, though i believe, even to this day, only 3 or 4 got to an 1.0 status. Many things that were put out, were mostly beta or alpha, that later got absorbed into the bigger mods you covered allready in this video. So I wouldn't midn if you go more into detail of them and how they might reflect the factions. I am thinking of Inquistion Demonhunt, Steel Legion, Dark Angels and Black Templars, which were even made vanilla compatible (with some little QoL stuff), later we got the 0.9 Witch Hunters, which was made for dark Crusade, but alter ported.
@@LifeofSquidMann I know most are now somehow in Unification and other big mods, but still. I think the BT were also one of the first SM mods for DoW2 that ws actually completed, before the relic forums went down
I'd love to see you cover the Soulstorm Redux mod by Eranthis in part two. It's kind of like a modernised firestorm mod. It also includes a playable Tartarus campaign!
I'll never not be salty over the fact the Iron Kingdoms mod got C&D'd after, like, three concept renders. Like, fuck, DoW was all about that grungy atmosphere, it would've gone fantastically with the pulpy dieselpunk of Warmachine.
UA is must have for Imperial Guard fans. It adds so much depth and variants to tank. As not a tabletop player i never knew there was other tanks than leman russ regular variant. I spent hours playing with russes then i noticed how many variants baneblades had!!! It hard must have. It is free and easy to instal give it a whirl and disable when not your tempo.
I wish Firestorm was still developed. UltApoc and Uni are great, but ... the gameplay of Firestorm just can't be matched. Imo. Titanium Wars are great too.
5:12 I cried. It was such a pity that the Brothers in Arms mod (the one adding several ignored Imperial Guard regiments) didn´t come into reality :((((
@@andarara-c1pHonestly, with how much the fanbase adores IG, you'd think we'd have every regiment under the sun playable by now. Or at the very least all the major IG regiments.
I'm glad to hear that ThunderPsyker shares a similar (correct) opinion about 'Firestorm over Kronus'. I only play DoW with this mod. FoK IS DoW now. I just wish there was a completed version with fixed AI scripts for Dark Crusade. I tried to move on to the Soulstorm version, but it's so unstable. It crashes constantly. And I can't reliably set my CPU opponents to 'Random' because one of the factions (i think it's Dark Eldar) will either crash the game outright or cause a 'Fatal SCAR error' on start.
Great video as always. I had originally voted for a dow3 review first, but am very pleased to see the celebration of the modding community's work. As for other recommended mods, there is one soulstorm mod I feel you would enjoy based on your views of the mods described here: Dawn of War Redux mod. The creator is overhauling and manually upgrading the UI, art, and FX of the original games so as to remaster it, while also tweaking gameplay in a manner comparable with FoK's "closer to tabletop" approach. Though some dow2 FX etc are recognisable, they have been painstakingly recreated rather than backported. It's focus is less on reinventing the wheel and more polishing what made dow special.
Units reinforce near special vehicles, they retreat to the nearest friendly building, they gain experi... Wait a second - that just Dawn of War 2, but with base building.
So true that *Ultimate Apocalypse* is just a rush to waaay overpowered Titans. Fun for a few games, but narrow-minded on a strategic level IMHO. *Unification Mod* handles it better, but still lower level units fall off extremely in mid- & endgame. *Crucible Mod* is handeling balancing of low level troops in endgame through upgrades the best. Disadvantage is, the mod hasn't got as many races... So, choose your own poison 😅
@@KingLich451 Same, Crucible Mod seems the best balanced mod out there. Unification is for the min/max'ers out there, AND it seems like the devs don't give out all the informations to keep an advantage for themselves, friends and supporters 🤔
The only mega mod I can think of that you didn't mention yet is 3rd Generation for Dark Crusade, which adds in (balanced) Tyranids, the Dark Eldar from Soulstorm, and also throws in mod races such as the Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters. No Sisters of Battle; the Witch Hunters take their place (which to me is a double edged sword given how I preferred the SOB stationary turret and the fact they could build minefields). Other than that, I would mention the Mod Manager which allowed you to merge mods together. I couldn't merge the World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons, Salamanders, and Black Templar race mods together without crashes given those mods change the UI. But I could play a combo of the Daemonhunters, Witch Hunters, Heretic Guardsmen, Night Lords, and Tyranids because those didn't. Before I got Dark Crusade, my favorite mods for Winter Assault were Lights of the Warp and the Left Out Units mod. They gave the Imperial Guard the DoW 1 PDF guard units I missed, gave Chaos the OG Daemon Prince Sindri with 15000hp (more of a Daemon Prince than the wimpy DC Daemon Prince) along with Renegade Guardsmen and Isador Akios, and they gave the Eldar the two Necron units from the WA campaign. In fact, I recall both the Tau and Necrons got fully-made race mods before Dark Crusade came out. And highly unpopular opinion here; I _much_ preferred the look of the Winter Assault Necron Monolith over the Dark Crusade look.
@@KingLich451 Just Necron Warriors and Necron Monoliths. The Necron Warriors mostly looked the same but moved slower, had more health, and did more damage. The Monoliths back then not only had less hp and moved slower, but even looked different. They were in the last campaign mission as the final boss.
Not sure if this counts but Unification has some pretty neat game mods in the current patch including Pac-Man. In addition a ton of units are references to non Dawn of war franchises. Of the top of my head I can recall Thorn princess- vanilla chaos she is essentially the character Yor Foreger from Spy X family The Tekharn faction of renegade guard has access to commander units such as the Mandalorian, and Wolf from Sekiro: Shadows die twice, and a number of Genshin Impact Characters (mainly Inazuma). Emperor children have access to the Intoner (five from Drakenguard 3) they also have 2B when fighting admech Vanilla guard have access to Gold Eagle which is meant to be general shepherd from modern warfare.
We got the Chrono Lord Inquisitor for the Praetorians, who is just freaking Dr. Who. He even comes in a TARDIS of all things. Mental Omega(C&C stuff) stuff includes, Libra for T'au, Volkov and Chitzkoi, THE Apocalpyse Tank, Tesla tech(Towers and tanks) for the Vostroyans, and the Qilin Tank for the Death Korp of Krieg. We even got Sam Fisher as a girl for the Vostroyans as an Assassin.
The non-DoW reference characters have really started infecting Unification to the point that's it's obnoxious instead of quirky and fun like the Tau waifu character that's hidden as an option in map settings. But maybe that's just me lol
Innocence Proves Nothing mod was probably the first biggest mod for vanilla, adding the Daemonhunters Ordo Malleus, Witch Hunters Ordo Hereticus and Alien Hunters Ordo Xenos as new playable armies from the tabletop.
Hmm, 40k mods... There was the Codex mod which, like Unification, looked to add more factions without overbloating the existing ones. Last I played Titanium they forgot to carry a '0' and made plasma guns fire with the power of BFGs. I think you would appreciate Dawn of Halo.
Anyone remember the modding scene back when filefront was around (well it's around again now but it shutdown in 09). The ork swarm mod was my favorite. Good times
In regards to non-warhammer character mods in Dawn of war, Unification mod has Yorha 2B for the Emperor's Children, Yuriko from Red Alert 3 for the Tau and the Marshmallow man statue for the Imperial fists as easter eggs! Unification mod is chuckfull of easter eggs!
Going to be honest, when I downloaded some overhaul mods for Dawn of War Dark Crusade (I can't remember which one, I mostly got it because I wanted the graphical update), it ended up destroying my love of the game. I tend to play slow, preferring to build large scale bases with satellite fortifications around the map (because Dark Crusade let you keep your lay outs), but the mod made the enemy AI incredibly aggressive and they'd roll me within a couple of minutes. Even when I tried playing aggressive, this would only lead to me these slogs of attrition that sapped my enjoyment.
Man thats plain wrong, UA is pretty bad and made questionable design choices but dow3 happend as they did bc they changed teams and wanted more "modern" overused games like starcraft or whatever.

While everyone has their own way they like to play, and while defences are typically either to buy one time to respond or else a thing of last resort; if whomever has the ability, and is willing to make the investment; history has shown that there can be fortifications so strong and powerful that it can be damn near if not “impossible” to compromise it\them.

UA’s unit choice was so massive that you could stick to army theme and almost never deviate and still win games. I wish triple A strategy games had that
I love that MandaloreGaming gave you the shout out for Dawn of War Soulstorm and you’ve now returned that shout out with his UA review 🙌
Weird, I think there was a released tau mod for the first dow. At least I saw it in a game magazine that one time, but never got to install it.
This does sound bizzare.
@@Brandelwyn Yeah, they got as far as adding "Fire Warriors"
Steel Legion, WA Necrons, Inquisition Daenonhunters and the SoB mod are all big cornerstones that should be covered
YES the SoB mod especially! The music choices for that mod were great, and it still has some of the best modelwork I've seen in any DoW mod to this very day. Also loved having Arbites (my beloved) as your starter units.

One small mod I always liked was The Fall of Cyrene, a small, 8 mission campaign for the original game. Might be worth a look, you glorious reviewer!
Hell yeah, only OGs know about Fall of Cyrene
@@jordanmanley9172God, I feel old
I didnt play it when it released (probably 2020,cant remember) but I remember it and wanted to mention it, hello fellow veterans. Sad to see mission packs didn't really get anywhere.
Firestorm mentioned. Yay.
Was my first mod, and it remains my favorite. Shame it was abandoned
I love its time capsule aspect, since that's still my favorite Edition of the tabletop.
What happend to relic forum?
@@LordVader1094it did look pretty balanced and lore friendly, is it still being updated? It is better than FoKaurava?
@@mojewjewjew4420 it was shut down, I don't know why, it was not a Relic forum, it was Relicnews forums, an unofficial forum, not run by Relic themselves
The issue of DoW mods sticking to just using Warhammer as a setting is a common thing with RTS mods. A lot of C&C mods just do Nod and GDI or Allies and Soviets again, instead of trying to RTS-ify other settings.
Idk I remember warcraft 3 and SC2 had plenty of mod using model from others games
EAW and SOASE have a bunch of "other franchise" mods, but then they tend to lean more 4X-wards so maybe that is a factor in that?
@@Dext3rM0rg4nyeah but warcraft 3 and 40k are seperate things.
Good times.
I would like to throw in the fall of cyrene mod as a suggestion its a pretty neat fan made prequel to dawn of war 1's campaign and it has little coverage to so hope this will make it to part 2
Oh and theres also the galaxy on fire reloaded mod to which is also compatible with all the dow 1 games including dow 1 and winter assualts campaigns they basically give new units for all of them and back port units introduced in dark crusade and soulstorm into dow 1 and winter assualts campaigns as well
Nice to see a few others mentioning Fall of Cyrene, was quite the interesting mod for what it was.
Why didn't mission packs get off? DoW would be so much better with them.
What happend to firestorm? Not everyone was there or remembers it.
I made my own mods back in the day. I was mad the Guard didn't have jump infantry so I gave them one.
It’s time brother
Send in the 64 pixel bandicoot division
firestorm over kronus was such a fun mod, it is pretty much my childhood it makes me remember 40k fifth edition
I dont remember fully ehat went in that mod but it doesn't portray a Canon or very compelling story, yes the gameplay of only 4 was great, i dont think they predicted it, more like it was a valid gane design and we see whatever was left of relic change the styles radically between dow 1,2 and "3"
This channel is a refuge for the old days. I hope you have a fulfilling and prosperous life full of joy and love!
I remember downloading a mod for DC called dowkingdom that replaced the campaign with it's own unique map and it was completely wild. Even on easy the enemy could easily get 5 bases, but you got 3 of each retinue instead of 1. Which helped me use them more in combat and for initial fights
Is the mod still around? I would like to try it.
@@mojewjewjew4420 I found it on moddb when I first got it, try checking there. I'm not sure if it still exists
BTMOD MENTIONED
@@LifeofSquidMann I know most are now somehow in Unification and other big mods, but still.

Shoutout to ruckuz88 for introducing me to DoW modding with his cinematic mod trailers more than 16 years ago.
I'd love to see you cover the Soulstorm Redux mod by Eranthis in part two. It's kind of like a modernised firestorm mod. It also includes a playable Tartarus campaign!
+1 for that!
And also check out CornCobMan's Fun Mod - it's just a few cool units for every faction. But still fun!
I'll never not be salty over the fact the Iron Kingdoms mod got C&D'd after, like, three concept renders. Like, fuck, DoW was all about that grungy atmosphere, it would've gone fantastically with the pulpy dieselpunk of Warmachine.
I think Inquisition Daemonhunt is worth pointing out, if only for its _badass_ trailer.
ZERO K MENTIONED, you should cover that one when your schedule clears next in 2029
And "Beyond All Reasons" too ;-)
UA is must have for Imperial Guard fans.

Check out Redux mod - it may interest you ;-)
Great video as always.
That Robot Wars reference was a fucking flashbang of nostalgia, good job
17:00 Zero-k mention i am actually gonna have a heart attack
Based beyond measure
Units reinforce near special vehicles, they retreat to the nearest friendly building, they gain experi... Wait a second - that just Dawn of War 2, but with base building.
Firestorm over Kronus was also the first big mod I played. I absolutely LOVED it.
So, choose your own poison 😅
with so many races, no way you can balance them all, Crucible is the way to go imo.
@@KingLich451
Same, Crucible Mod seems the best balanced mod out there. Unification is for the min/max'ers out there, AND it seems like the devs don't give out all the informations to keep an advantage for themselves, friends and supporters 🤔
I was not expecting a FireStorm vs Hypno-Disk reference today, but I'm very happy its here of all places
Gokus unit ability is basically an upscale krak missile modeled too look like a kamaha.
Necron units in Winter Assault? what units are they
@@KingLich451 Just Necron Warriors and Necron Monoliths. The Necron Warriors mostly looked the same but moved slower, had more health, and did more damage. The Monoliths back then not only had less hp and moved slower, but even looked different. They were in the last campaign mission as the final boss.
I'm sort of having a problem with trying to get the camera mod for the 3rd generation mod. I mean I love it, but it has the base game camera.
I finally found somebody else who doesn't like Ultimate Apocalypse. My goto mod is Advanced Campaign really.
Same for both, which are like unicorns, so rare.
Not sure if this counts but Unification has some pretty neat game mods in the current patch including Pac-Man.
In addition a ton of units are references to non Dawn of war franchises. Of the top of my head I can recall
Thorn princess- vanilla chaos she is essentially the character Yor Foreger from Spy X family
The Tekharn faction of renegade guard has access to commander units such as the Mandalorian, and Wolf from Sekiro: Shadows die twice, and a number of Genshin Impact Characters (mainly Inazuma).
Emperor children have access to the Intoner (five from Drakenguard 3) they also have 2B when fighting admech
Vanilla guard have access to Gold Eagle which is meant to be general shepherd from modern warfare.
And don't forget the Steel Legion storm troopers in Halo 4 armor!
And Obi Wan Kenobi!
Find him in Winconditions! ;-)
I miss your adventures with the chicken man.
Hmm, 40k mods... There was the Codex mod which, like Unification, looked to add more factions without overbloating the existing ones. Last I played Titanium they forgot to carry a '0' and made plasma guns fire with the power of BFGs. I think you would appreciate Dawn of Halo.

Dawn of war 1 uses the Impossible creatures engine? I guess I can see it. That's neat.
Impossible creatures, DoW, Company of Heroes - they all use the same engine ;-)
Going to be honest, when I downloaded some overhaul mods for Dawn of War Dark Crusade (I can't remember which one, I mostly got it because I wanted the graphical update), it ended up destroying my love of the game. I tend to play slow, preferring to build large scale bases with satellite fortifications around the map (because Dark Crusade let you keep your lay outs), but the mod made the enemy AI incredibly aggressive and they'd roll me within a couple of minutes. Even when I tried playing aggressive, this would only lead to me these slogs of attrition that sapped my enjoyment.
I blame Ultimate Apocalypse for being one of 3 reasons we got THIS reality version of DoW3.
