Yes "Private Insurance = FOR PROFIT HEALTHCARE" That's what makes our hospitals the best in the world. Incentive and competition. All these countries with Free Healthcare are good for routine stuff, but as soon as there is a serious surgery they're going to the US (at least if you're from Canada). In Europe there are waiting lists months long and depending on the severity of the operation needed you might not have time to wait that long. All those PROFITS generally aren't just going into someone's pocket, it's reinvested back into the hospital, by hiring world class doctors; which isn't a problem because the doctors actually want to work at a hospital that makes money, and can pay them a high salary, all while investing in the latest medical equipment that can only be bought with profits. The whole reason our healthcare system is head and shoulders above everyone else's is due to it being in the private sector. Competition will force the best product at the lowest price, that is the brilliance of capitalism. Take the post office for example, government run and is horrendously inefficient and operates at a loss every year. FEDEX & UPS = FOR PROFIT COMPANIES that are quicker, more efficient, and less costly. Socialized medicine does the opposite, since there would be no private alternative, no competition, that's when your premiums will skyrocket. Look at Obamacare, 2nd year that premium doubled. Not to mention they will probably not make the same kind of money and the quality of doctor will diminish causing the quality to drop. All in all private companies are just better in the free market

All neoliberalism does is insert a lot of managers, up the prices and lowering healthcare capacity for "efficiency" reasons, freeze salaries and damage working conditions and job security. Lots of hospitals are on the brink of bankrupcy. I don't denounce capitalism altogether but it provides no answers in regard to things like healthcare, arts, environmental issues, let's say anything that costs money. And most of the ones that hate him, will still vote for him because Fox news has warned them what the Dems will do. The most recent poll I saw showed 30% of likely voters were Republican, 30% Democrat & 40% Independent. Bernie is most popular with Independents by a long way. So the Republicans who won't vote for Trump make up about 2% of likely voters. Bernie would take a vast majority of that 40% of independents. Should the Dems build a strategy over convincing those 2%, or run a candidate that people actually like and believe?

I don't understand Americans. He wants to keep paying for his private health insurance which means he is paying some percentage, probably around 40%, to corporate profit. And, he is limited to which doctors and which hospitals he can visit? He thinks this is good! With single payer, I can go to the nearest hospital, or any other I can reach, and can pick the GP I want, and the system pays. Our arrangement covers all the basics. If you want something more exotic, you can purchase your own insurance to cover multiple countries, better hospital rooms, and other frills. Most companies offer some form of extended health insurance, so you can still have "private health insurance", but everyone is covered if they are sick or injured, regardless.

Hi from the UK. The NHS is amazing and has saved thousands of lives. The thought of living in a country where health care is not free at the point if delivery would be a nightmare. The royals use the NHS, homeless folk use the NHS and all receive fantastic treatment.

Seems as though economists are more concerned about it than Sanders and his economic advisors. But It's an important consideration. "Every year there are 500,000 bankruptcies in the US because of medical bills, 30,000 deaths because people couldn't access healthcare in time. The US spends double what other developed countries do on healthcare. Almost every other 1st world country has a version of medicare for all that provides good quality healthcare to all their citizens. Are you saying the USA is not capable of adjusting one of those systems to meet our needs?"

Yes "Private Insurance = FOR PROFIT HEALTHCARE" That's what makes our hospitals the best in the world. Incentive and competition. All these countries with Free Healthcare are good for routine stuff, but as soon as there is a serious surgery they're going to the US (at least if you're from Canada). In Europe there are waiting lists months long and depending on the severity of the operation needed you might not have time to wait that long. All those PROFITS generally aren't just going into someone's pocket, it's reinvested back into the hospital, by hiring world class doctors; which isn't a problem because the doctors actually want to work at a hospital that makes money, and can pay them a high salary, all while investing in the latest medical equipment that can only be bought with profits. The whole reason our healthcare system is head and shoulders above everyone else's is due to it being in the private sector. Competition will force the best product at the lowest price, that is the brilliance of capitalism. Take the post office for example, government run and is horrendously inefficient and operates at a loss every year. FEDEX & UPS = FOR PROFIT COMPANIES that are quicker, more efficient, and less costly.
Socialized medicine does the opposite, since there would be no private alternative, no competition, that's when your premiums will skyrocket. Look at Obamacare, 2nd year that premium doubled. Not to mention they will probably not make the same kind of money and the quality of doctor will diminish causing the quality to drop. All in all private companies are just better in the free market

I live in Holland which was struggling with waiting lists and we were promised that taking healthcare to the market place would eradicate the waiting lists.
All neoliberalism does is insert a lot of managers, up the prices and lowering healthcare capacity for "efficiency" reasons, freeze salaries and damage working conditions and job security.
Lots of hospitals are on the brink of bankrupcy.
I don't denounce capitalism altogether but it provides no answers in regard to things like healthcare, arts, environmental issues, let's say anything that costs money.

So the Republicans who won't vote for Trump make up about 2% of likely voters. Bernie would take a vast majority of that 40% of independents. Should the Dems build a strategy over convincing those 2%, or run a candidate that people actually like and believe?

And, he is limited to which doctors and which hospitals he can visit? He thinks this is good! With single payer, I can go to the nearest hospital, or any other I can reach, and can pick the GP I want, and the system pays.
Our arrangement covers all the basics. If you want something more exotic, you can purchase your own insurance to cover multiple countries, better hospital rooms, and other frills. Most companies offer some form of extended health insurance, so you can still have "private health insurance", but everyone is covered if they are sick or injured, regardless.

@@andytim isn't it funny how national debt only seems to become an issue when a progressive intends to spend $ on people and social programs, but when a conservative does so on military spending, a wall, tax cuts for the rich and corporate welfare you never hear about it?
Even if your figure is correct (and I'm by no means conceding that it is) it ignores the fact that there are different types of debt and government spending. One type when distributed to working/middle class and poor people delivers direct economic stimulus and a boon to the economy bcs it is invariably spent within the real economy. The other not so much as it is extracted from the real economy via corporate stock buy backs, rent seeker capital accumulation and wealth consolidation. Though increased military spending does tend to encourage US involvement in foreign wars, which certainly makes all the corporations that comprise the military industrial complex very rich. Sadly the poor grunts who fight these economically inspired bs 'freedom' wars don't share in the spoils, but they do monopolise all the post war injuries and PTSD. Swings and roundabouts, right!?!

Some people believe debt isnt bad. Seems as though economists are more concerned about it than Sanders and his economic advisors. But It's an important consideration.
The entire political system incurs too much debt, regardless of party, to appeal to votes from the public. Both parties spend extreme amounts of money that we don't have.
It's interesting how far left people are typically pretty rational on climate change related issues, but when you discuss the long term debt impact of certain social programs, they like to pretend it's a conversation that doesnt need to happen.

When will Americans realise that you guys are not admired around the world because of your private health insurance system or the fact that you can own an AR-15. Your country is admired for what you have achieved. Your country went through the worst depression in 1929, bounced back under FDR and won a world war. Your country's inventors gave the world everything from the light bulb to heart transplant and what not. You guys are responsible for creating some of the best music and the world listens to it. That's what everyone in the world admires you for, not guns and private healthcare and rip-off prices for medicines. That should be the message for anyone running against Trump.

If you trust the government to run the military (which is the largest organization on the planet and has it's own healthcare system), but don't think they can manage healthcare of the rest of the country better than the price gouging greedy industrialists who run our for profit healthcare system now, then you are beyond reason. The civilian government does an awful job managing the military. If the military were my dog, I just "oops" let it loose into the supermarket to eat all the meat, where it chased an old lady down the aisle and mauled a toddler.

This is what I think is the best answer to give a medicare for all sceptic. "Every year there are 500,000 bankruptcies in the US because of medical bills, 30,000 deaths because people couldn't access healthcare in time. The US spends double what other developed countries do on healthcare.
Almost every other 1st world country has a version of medicare for all that provides good quality healthcare to all their citizens.

This was the episode where I discovered Krystal Ball. I LOVE this woman. She is so attractive, strong, articulate, intelligent and fearless. Her and Michael were alone on reality island while the other 4 idiots just dithered along and spewed nonsense. Ever since this episode I have watched Rising with her and Saagar (my favorite conservative) every day. I don’t miss. It has reshaped my political views in so many ways. I have their book; it’s great. I always come back to this episode. It’s my favorite because it’s the day I discovered my political love.

Nearly $1 trillion in military spending each year. Rightly 1/3 of government funds spent on healthcare. Compared with other countries, more tax money is spent per capita than in those with a single-payer system. That's before spending on private insurance is taken into account.
