- Here is an initial review of the new 2024 OEX Pantha II UL tent. The oex pantha 2 ul is part of the OEX ultralight tent range. On my scales this ultralight backpacking tent weighs just under 1.5kg including all the accessories. This 2 person tent is a 2-3 season tent designed for summer use.
This is a great additional to your ultralight backpacking gear set up. Pack the poles separately and the tent packs down really small. Despite the small size of this camping gear it's very spacious inside and genuinely suitable as a 2 man tent.

The OEX Pantha Ultralite is a whole lot of tent for 1.5kg! The dome design provides a spacious inner with room for two. It also gives it a freestanding structure that doesn’t require much guying. With a skeleton all-in-one pole design, the tent is quick and easy to pitch after a day on the move.
The Pantha is the only tent in the OEX Ultralite range that can be pitched inner-only. If you’re camping in warm and dry summer conditions, you can leave the flysheet at home and cut down your pack weight and size significantly.
High-performance N-Liten Sil/Nylon fabric is stronger and more waterproof* despite its low weight. OEX Endura Poles made from high-tensile aluminium, ultra-light guy lines and premium aluminium pegs all help to keep your rucksack as light as possible when you’re hiking to the camping spot.

*Sil/Nylon is lighter and more flexible than PU-coated polyester fabric. The fabric repels moisture on both sides, preventing condensation build-up and significantly reducing the risk of mould and mildew. It offers the best waterproofing available and can be seam-sealed with silicon rather than tape, helping further reduce the tent's weight. Although not always necessary, each tent comes supplied with a tube of Silicone Seam Sealer to re-seal any gaps for improved waterproof performance.

few years ago when i was very poor (i still am) i bought yellowstone alpine 2 which is 200 grams more and 220 quid less. still going strong after many tours. and its green!

I'm genuinely impressed. This is a big tent for sub 1.5kg and packs up really small if you use a drybag. Take note of the groundsheet though, the floor is very thin! @BackpackingUK I'd seen that groundsheets were available, but I haven't been able to find them on Go Outdoors, Millets, or Black's websites. Besides which, I'm always a little sceptical about the logic behind a lightweight product that really requires additional gear to be carried to make it viable.
@@tim1289r I totally get what you mean. Virtually all UL tents require a footprint on anything other than lush grass. DCF bottomed tents are even worse!

Looks a nice tent for lower level summer camping with the footprint. The pros outweigh the cons with this new OEX range but one thing I can’t get past is the washed out blue colour - I’d prefer to see a richer colour, navy blue or a dark green. The weight is astonishing - good news for a solo hiker. Thanks for giving us a look round 👍🏻

Personally I think all of these OEX UL tents are very much aimed at a niche market, and even discounted seem a bit on the pricey side.
I'm sure there'll be folk that love them though.

Thanks for the detailed review Andy. Was interested in this but to be honest my trusty Naturehike monger 2 will do me still. A little heavier but performs great in the rain and good for 3 seasons.
I really like the Mongar, I just wish it had a more solid mesh at the bottom to stop the cold drafts.
@@BackpackingUK Agreed Andy. I think if they added solid mesh then it would be a perfect all round 3 season for all. I don’t mind the draft in spring summer and early autumn so it ticks all the boxes for me.
Another mongar 2 fan, great tent for the price. Admittedly a bit cold in the winter, but with 2 sleeping bags I've managed to stay out in mine all winter.
Looks like a great tent but the price even with the discounts is a bit steep. I'm sure you know for about £130 all in with delivery and tax incl a footprint you can buy the Naturehike Mongar 2 which is 99% the same. Ok the Naturhlehike is about 200g heavier all in but still, that's great value. The OEX at say £175 from a UK retailer sounds about right but £250+ I'm not so sure.
Yeah, I agree. Even for European/UK retailers, I'd sooner go for a Forclaz MT900 which I think are about £220 (or were last year anyway). Again, 2-300g heavier but a better tent for me.

Not sure I'd want a tent that you pitch inner first, and would only be confident to pitch on a bowling green when there is no chance of rain. I live in the UK 😂😂😂
I think it’s about time tent manufacturers put a standard together for the number of people they will accommodate. Maybe this should be done on sleeping pad size. For example the Durston X-Mid Pro 2+ was designed for two wide (25 inch) sleeping pads so why not just call it a 2xregular wide?!
This tent from OEX is 110cm at the foot end according to Andy which is 43 inches. This therefore could accommodate two regular sleeping pads (2x20”)
I briefly had the Phoxx II which absolutely cannot accommodate even two regular sleeping pads.
The Jackal III, which I swapped it for, is a very comfortable two person tent easily taking two regular wide pads plus space for gear but it’s sold as a three person tent if you squeeze in three regular pads and have no space for gear!
Maybe the influencers should start influencing the manufacturers for a tent/sleeping pad standard which would really benefit the consumer.

Nice size vestibule
It's a similar weight to the terra nova voyager superlight, but far roomier, and I bet a lot less expensive. You can modify this type of tent using a couple of pole mushrooms fitted to the webbing holding the cross pole to make it sturdier in windy conditions (I've got a vid on my channel of my msr elixir on how to modify it using walking poles😉)
Tbh that looks really good value compared to the Hubba Hubba which it bares more than a passing resemblance too. I do like that colour, it’s not too loud or garish.

I think 'ultralight' is like the word 'sustainable' - both used far too often and usually an exaggeration at that. 1.5 kilos is a good weight, but definitely not ultralight. Aside from that is a good solid tent. Cheers

My Naturehike Tagar 2 is 1.3kg all in, it's easier to pitch (albeit single wall), and 120 quid. The only real issue I've got with it is that there's 2 vestibules but 1 door.
Ive had the lanshan 2 pro with groundsheet for about a year now, got it for £115 quid, seam sealed it, made a few mods and I’d say for multi day hikes it is absolutely the perfect tent, its inexpensive, durable and lightweight. Because it’s so cheap you don’t have to worry about it, the less I care about it the more it just surprises me with how well it performs, been in some really heavy downpours and not a single drop in the tent. I own 2 other tents that are over £800 they have their specific uses, of course they perform absolutely brilliantly but they flipping should for that cost. Lanshan punches way above its weight!
Can I ask, do you get a bit of condensation? I have the Lanshan 1 Pro and find I get loads of condensation inside and I'm starting to feel a bit cramped inside especially when I fetch the little doggo. So looking for a 2-person light tent which is what brought me to Andys video but I'd be taken on the 2-Person Lanshan if the condensation isn't like i've experianced. I try and create plenty of airflow through the bottom, but never seems to make any difference. Thanks.
@@M4rkieM4rk I get condensation on all my tents to be honest, even my Fjallraven tents, on the lanshan 2 pro, I’ve separated the doors from the main guy line, used bungee cord for the doors, yes it does mean using an extra peg, but this makes the doors easier to use and gives more guy line to adjust the top vents so they are open a little bit more, also I use those flat sponge cloths to wipe away any condensation through the night if it is really humid.
With the bungee cords on the doors you can also have them partially open, even if it is raining as the water only drips onto the ground anyway.
It looks remarkably similar to the MSR Hubba Hubba.
MAHOOOOSIVE packsize! Jesus. We need a company to come up with an ultralight tent that packs small! This might be fine for a backpacking trip, but for a bikepacker it's absolutely unacceptable to have that huge of a pack just for a tent!

It’s almost identical to the Forceatt two person tent, same weight too. The forceatt is green. Not keen to be honest.
Hi Andy, I know OEX are very popular and millions love them. However, I owned one of their tents the Phoxx2 V2, which I bought brand new, the quality was so bad, honestly mate it was beyond belief! It was put together with cotton! I literally pulled the zip off with one hand! It was also full of hanging orange threads, more than I could count. The whole thing was a joke, just flimsy rubbish. Ironically I brought the tent as the Phoxx2 is so popular. This was the first and ONLY tent I'd ever buy from OEX, these days if I want a great budget tent I stick with the ever reliable Vango brand, in my opinion Vango are in a completely different league to the cheap nasty OEX stuff, believe it or not I also have one of their chairs, all the material peeled of that after two months. Never again OEX anything!
Sorry for the rant but hearing OEX makes my blood boil 🤬
🤔 i have my phoxx for two years now and used it about 25 times , a few of camps in 35+ mph and i didnt had a single issue with it pal 🤷😄
I think their quality control needs looking at because thousands have great experience and others not so much. My OEX gear has always been great, although I do agree with you about the threads and those finishing touches. One of my Vango tents was shocking, but another one was great. Unfortunately, I think all cheaper gear suffers from quality control issues.
I got a oex fathom 400 sleeping bag and it fell apart at the seams after 4-5 times using it, I've already put 2 rolls of of repair tape on it just to get a bit more use out of it in my campervan, I have a rab now and it's great, will never buy a oex bag again, poor quality, my phoxx v2 has been ok to be fair
I have two Vango tents and both have very good stitching. However, one is a force ten so is bombproof. The other is a Helium 1. Very well made tent. A bit flappy when wet like most Sil nylon ones. It also has a quite delicate inner. I have snagged the inner zip a few times which has torn the material. Easy to fix though and just something you have to watch for with lightweight materials.
It has been on countless trips and all sorts of weather and I'd never get rid of it
I like Vango. Yeah, they aren't made in Scotland anymore but I do think they put thought in to their r&do and not just re-lable. I have their Vulcan -12 bag and it is a seriously good piece of kit for the winter. Ok at 1.2 kg but not the best weight wise.

Only if it was a still day. Personally, I hate chilly winds ripping through my tent, that’s why I mostly choose solid mesh inners and low fly tents.
@@BackpackingUK do you think an additional tarp or wind barrier might make it more comfortable? I have just bought this then and would like to use it for more than the summer 😭
@@marcuspiper4162 if there is a chilly wind, I do things like block the wind by sticking my backpack and boots against the fly in the vestibule or end that’s facing the wind. There are little tricks you can do to minimize the cold.
@@BackpackingUK i spent a night in the pantha 2 on saturday. there was slight rain and the tent held up really well and had no condesation or moisture inside. i had my friends camper van as a wind block so no issues there either.
However, i was unlucky enough to get one with a faulty zip on it. GIven the high cost and limited usage, decided to swap it out for a phoxx 2 v2 and the rest of my money back!
I'd say light weight but you can't be putting this with other ultra light tents I don't think🤣 if you gave this to someone who was ultralight he would have a heart attack think you should change that to lightweight just because they say it is ultra everyone knows its not

Also, it is quite expensive. You can get a F10 Radon for £250 while Blacks are selling this at £329. Go are actually quoting 500 before their usual discount😂😂😂 with a member price of 300. And the radon doesn't need seam sealed.... @@Bluemerleoutdoors
Yeah, sub 1kg is ultralight in my book. It is pricier than similar tents as well. You can get a Vango Radon cheaper and it won't need seam sealed. Go have it on a retail price of £500 quid😂😂😂 OK they discount it to 300 but they are putting it as a higher retail price than most true ultralight tents.

It’s another one of those ‘you may wish to’ tents. So many brands are adding this caveat in now to protect themselves. To me, it means the tent is showerproof but not able to withstand heavy rain for prolonged periods of time.
I actually love this tent, just can’t find the footprint for it for love nor money 🤷♂️
I know they exist purely because some posted a photo of them on the OEX Owners FB page. Can’t find anything on the internet about them. I suppose all you can do is phone the shops and ask them to check their stock.

Don't get too hung up on "hydrostatic head" it depends on how it's been tested. In some countries (especially USA) they make the tent, expose it to UV light (the sun...in the desert in most cases) THEN test the HH. In EU, they test the material straight off the roll, so your not getting comparable results. USA made tents usually have a low HH listed...this is because they've been degraded in the sun first to give a more realistic rating. I've never had my msr tents leak. Also....give any tent a boost by adding fabsil or nikwax tent solar proofer, it drastically improves the HH and prevents it from degradation.
Thanks, thats helped clear up some confusion I've had over hydrostatic head. My Big Agnes Tiger Wall fly has a HH of only 1200 mm, but has never let a drop of rain in. Many UK You Tubers suggest 1200mm is no use in UK rain, but my experience suggests otherwise.
MSR tents are known for leaking, especially the Hubba range. They even come with seam sealant after all the bad feedback.
@@BackpackingUK I've got the elixir which isn't sil nylon. The Hubba is sil nylon, and they leak through the seams, not the actual material....just like any tent that doesn't come with sealed seams.mine is 9 years old and has never leaked, I don't know what people are doing with theirs 🤣

@@BackpackingUK I've actually had an old customer complaining to me about his hilleberg akto leaking at the seams...if it's not sealed....it's going to leak. Which msr tents have you had leaking?
Thanks for pointing out the biggest drawback with this “so-called” 2 person tent…….Recent surveys indicate that 70% of backpackers prefer 25” wide sleeping systems, so why on earth would a manufacture bring a new 2 person tent to the market which is too short in width? This tent is excellent when keeping your gear dry inside and ample room for your dog, unless the dog wants to sleep at the foot-end of the tent where the tent is even shorter in width!
Too expensive for us ‘sensible’ people, though, tbh, Andy. I’m sure there are better tents which only weigh a slight bit more. I know there is, I have a couple. 😉👍🏾
