Thanks for putting this together Bryce and taking a look at the X-Mid.
I appreciate the feedback and constructive thoughts. For some of the cons, here are some notes that might be helpful:
1) For space, the inner tent is adjustable inside the peaks so you can pull it higher for more headroom. This pulls the inner tighter to so it can generally increase space all over and then when that is combined with the clip pulls outs on the sides it helps. But yes the inner is a fairly average size. You may prefer the X-Mid Pro 1 version. That has a smaller footprint yet the inner area is actually noticeably larger so the ratio of the footprint area:inner area is better.
2) For orienting the floor, if you’re trying to get the floor somewhere specific then throw out the tent from one end and remember will always be angled a bit to the left. So you twist the tent a bit to the right. That works pretty well, but if you really want to get the floor exactly in a spot then you can start the pitch by staking the 4 spots around the fly that correspond to the floor corners (rather than the fly corners).
3) With regard to pitching it in the wind, if you get the walls tighter that will help quite a bit (my pitching video has some tips on this) and also there are guyline attachments to the side panels that are helpful.
4) Sorry about that backwards tensionlock routing. I’ve only heard ever something like this reported once before. We build these tents at high quality factory (same factory as MSR, Big Agnes) but occasionally there can be a mistake.
5) Thanks for the feedback/request for dual zipper sliders. I’ve been avoiding this because we use larger/tougher #5 zippers but then the sliders are heavier so adding two gets harder to justify on an ultralight tent, but we do get some requests for this and I am considering adding it to the ‘Solid’ version that is aimed more at rough weather.
With regard to innovation/copying, the Stratospire certainly invented the offset ridgeline (well actually it was a user who suggested it to Tarptent). I don’t claim to have invented that. What the X-Mid invented was a way to make a trekking pole tent work inside of a simpler rectangular fly shape. Previous trekking pole tents had downsides like no vestibules, measuring pole lengths, more complex pitching, poles in doorways, mandatory guylines etc. The X-Mid avoids all these problems with the unique floorplan that has a diagonal floor inside of a rectangular fly, which enables everything to work in a simpler, lighter fly shape. Certainly some specific bits pre-existed (rectangular flys, offset ridgelines) but the Stratospire didn't have the simpler floorplan the X-Mid developed (the Strat is a normal rectangle floor sitting in the standard position in a hexagon fly). The both tents do have an angled ridgeline but aside from this the shapes are quite different and the X-Mid is substantially simpler and lighter.
Cheers,
Dan
And this folks, is why Durston is the man. He’s actively involved.
Rolled and smoked.
@@chili1593 and he listens to his customers feedback ,and watches reviews on all his equipment . He keeps his finger on the pulse at all times.
@@jamesking4225 definitely. I find his engagement is always positive and helpful.
yeah man that's it. You need a few set up to get all the possibilities to adjust. Besides the footprint it's a monster. I like the extra space to keep stuff outside and have the inside clean
I used the x-mid pro 2 last year on the Colorado Trail and I loved the extra space and how easy it was to setup in the rain. I did fight the footprint three or four times, otherwise, liked it way more than my duplex. It handled the strong thunderstorm winds well. Yes, the wind did catch the tent, but it didn't collapse as long as I had 6 stakes placed.
I personally love the goofy shape of the inner. I use those longer corners to stuff clothes and other gear that I don’t want outside in my vestibule. Seems odd, but actually does make for more usable space inside the tent 🤙🏼
the irony of you calling the tent goofy :D
Nice review! I'm not sure I agree with everything but I'll say that I shared a bunch of your concerns/cons initially. I got a 2p first, then the idea of lighter got into my head and I got a 1p (so I have both). The 1p is almost better as a tarp as you suggest, though you can 'skinny pitch' them which reduces the footprint a bunch.
The 1p is a bit of an odd tent. It works perfectly and I kind of fell in love with it after my initial disappointment of the interior space, and incredibly similar size and weight to the 2p. It works perfectly for a L/W pad with a light rectangular (or fully open) quilt over it because it tucks in perfectly on the sides. The extra room at the head and foot was just that; I think that was Dan offering a bit more 'inside' space to keep shoes and other things that you didn't want critters getting into instead of just lopping off the ends to a rectangle and reducing the available interior length.
The 2p just makes more sense overall. It's so close in size and weight I can't imagine anyone not benefitting from the extra space; it's huge inside by comparison and the extra pockets are awfully nice. I do have a place for the 1p, and I like it, but I'll almost always default to my 2p because I take my dog with me quite often, and I do like to keep my gear inside the mesh when possible, though I will say that the ability to hang stuff off the trekking poles is pretty sweet and helps with keeping thigs out of your gear.
If it were me, standing on Dan's shoulders and doing the armchair quarterback, I'd have choked in one of the vestibules to reduce the weight and footprint, OR I'd have eliminated the second door and extended the floor such that even though that pole was now inside the living space, I'd have the extra netted area for my gear, or my dog inside the single person tent (kind of like the Lunar Solo theory).
That's also a pretty groovy little drone; I agree with your assessment of having a larger/manual drone. I have a DJI Mini2 but I just don't use it like I thought, mostly because I really don't have the time or inclination to learn to get good with it. I think following iterations of the HoverAir X1 will be pretty impressive and I'll be keeping my eye on those since I really like the concept.
You totally needed this tent!
Never used the 1 person, but the 2 person is a palace when I'm solo and can still fit 1 of my kids in when they want to backpack. You gave a very honest review though and I couldnt fault your opinions. Very cool drone and love your comedic content!
Thats an old version. The new version has fixed a lot of the negative things you had 👍🏻
And you should have the bugnet connected all the time. Thats how its designed for. Its wierd that you americans a lot of the time put the tents up in two peices.
It seems so much better than most competitors tents by ease of setup. But my takeaway from this is that drone!! It looks so perfect! Thanks for the double feature.
While this tent is ubiquitous, it isn't for everyone and that's ok! Love hearing everyone's pros & cons. I picked one up last year and really like it. The weather resistance and the light weight at that price point were really what sold me. It's not perfect but a neat option for most trips!
Thanks Bryce, I love the drone, but I love the X-mid more. More than you do anyway, it seems! I have the 1p solid version and I think it is really great. I wanted a sub-1kg tent that I could sit up in and that had plenty of storage space and the X-mid 1ps does this well. The two vestibules are a real luxury, put your stuff in one and cook in the other. The offset inner is odd initially but you quickly get used to it and it means you get the headroom over the length of the inner. Anyway, if you are in the tent you are probably asleep most of the time and not worrying about the asymmetry. (It does have rotational symmetry though so you could focus on that if you can't sleep...) The tent is great in a wind, doesn't flap much if pitched properly and hasn't collapsed on me yet.
Elli Hikes spent 100+ nights in her X-mid1p solid walking the length of the UK with her (small) dog. She says in her YT post-trip gear review that the tent shows no wear or tear even after so much use and that she loves the tent. Maybe someone, somewhere, has spent more time in an X-mid but there can't be that many. I've never spent so long in any tent but the main thing, probably, is to be out there having fun in whatever tent you've got.
The reason you have such large vestibules is because of the offset sleeping area. I have a 2P, and Im actually in mine right now. I love this tent! The Aqua guard zips are genius btw
I'll have to check out 2p! Have a good camp!
I had the 1P, but felt cramped in it (In its defense, it was my first 1p tent). I ended up selling it and picked up a 2p - absolutely love it! One of the things I like most about it is the different setups: rain fly only, bug net only (With star gazer kit), One side open (either side), both sides open, etc. As for the 2 doors on the 1P, that was another fine feature that drew me to it in the first place. One side (facing other campers) could be left closed while the other side (facing some awesome vista) could be left open - and get more ventilation.
Good, honest review. And that drone is pretty cool!
I love the different geometry on these. I use a 2p solid for 1p multiday hikes and love the space/weight/feature balance. I’m 6’4” and find the headroom good enough for changing etc. wouldn’t even think about the 1p. I’ve got the ground cloth too which lets you have a cracking tarp like setup with minimal effort if you don’t need the bug mesh.
I used the X-Mid 1P for the first 850 miles or so on the AT last year. Leaving the inner tent attached is the way to go. I’ve never owned a tent that was so easy to setup up and take down. On a thru hike this is very important. With the two entries I did not have to worry about orientation when setting up either. It was extremely weatherproof as well. I switched to another tent for the rest of the AT but it was just so I could get my pack inside with all the rain we had. The footprint is large though. Made finding spots more challenging on the AT.
I'll need it next weekend. Thanks for getting it for us.
❤😂🎉🎉🎉 Oh, thank you, Bryce!!! So thoughtful ! May I barrow it next week, please?😂 Lol😊
An "X-Mid 1 Plus" would be perfect!!
That excistes. The X-Mid PRO 2p have a size thats inbetween the 1p och sil-poly 2p. But that tent is in Dyneema. But Durston has talked about haveing a prototype on that for the sil-poly version
I'm really big on tents with 2 doors for cross ventilation to cut back on humidity and get some cross breeze on a hot day. Easier set up compared to most trekking pole tents also sounds nice but trying to orient the inner correctly on a slope does sound like a PITA!
That’s a cool lil drone
Thanks for the review.
i just got my Xmid1 looking forward to using it
Hey Bryce. Always love your energy and enthusiasm in your videos. I have the 2p one and works good for me and my lab. Speaking of which could you tell me if the site you shot this video is a public park? Looks like a perfect place for me to do some training with my lab.
Thanks! Throw me an email and I'll send you my super secret spot😆. Bryce.newbold@gmail.com
Sold xmid pro after a summer for many reasons you mentioned. Bought pyramid called Middus from Bonfus- much easier to set up, more storm worthy, smaller footprint, same living space, double wall, not made in a autocratic country
I ordered the X1 after watching your Xmid review. That thing is sweet, just got back from a ride on my gravel bike with it.
Thanks, Bryce. I just purchased a four season Kuiu four season storm star. Very cool tent going out this weekend.
Very nice!
All I can say Bryce is that that tent is more interesting than a $2,000 tent that Darwin is showing off and they're practically the same weight
Haha! Your probably right
Two different tents for COMPLETELY different environments.
@@euphonekThat’s what I was thinking. Darwin went over that in his video. I love my X-Mid and I’d rather have that over Darwin’s tent for more than a few reasons, but I don’t do any kind of mountaineering that Darwin’s tent was designed for.
Now that drone is freaking awesome 👌 😉✊️🔥✌️💚
Great honest first impression review as usual. My impression.. ehh..
Hi from Newfoundland Canada great video buddy looks like a nice tent ⛺️
Wait until you try the backpack. ❤
Nice Vid thanks for posting
Who else has a four-stake design? Not Tarptent. Not Sierra Designs. Gonna setup and takedown hundreds of times and stakes are the majority of that effort. Xmid Pro's have more headroom, since netting's sewn into wall. That leaves it single-wall overhead, but hasn't been a condensation issue yet. Certainly wouldn't trade back to non-Pro design. Yes, it's a big-footprint, but the rain/splash stays far away. Mud too. Can put on shoes/boots without slopping around in mud. Want a small footprint? Get a bivy. Or a free-standing? Can't wait to see Mr Durston's freestanding offering. Maybe he can integrate trekking-poles into more than porch-mode? Maybe storm-mode? (more...)
Regarding vestibules - wouldn't own a tent that doesn't have two (cross-ventilation and bear-escape : ).
I mean there are quite a few that use 5. Fly creek style tents. 4 is a cool feature in a pinch but let's be honest. We're all going to use 6. 😆. And cross ventilation is definitely a pro of the 2 doors! Didn't think of that. 👍
@@BryceNewbold - Haven't used more than four yet. More, only in big winds and no winds have been big enough yet. Am the laziest camp-setter-upper. Will cowboy-camp at every opportunity, just to avoid those four stakes.
Good review. Really like the drone! I can’t understand why someone would buy the 1 person version. The weight different of the two is minimal and the space difference is insane. I’ve owned a Tarptent and now X-Mid Pro 2 and have to say they are both great but the design of the Durston, when it is a 2 person, is as close to perfect as I have used.
Just curious what other 1P tents you are comparing the interior size to? The X-Mid 1P has one of the largest interiors of any comparable trekking pole tent.
Also the advantage of having a double vestibule is that you don't have keep as much gear inside the tent so it creates more room to spread out. Lastly it looks like your inner was not cinched up to the top all the way. If it wasn't that should get you another ~2 inches of headspace + you can guy out the sides if you want more interior volume on sides.
It looked saggy in the video but it really wasn't. I had it attached to the doors and your right, using the guy lines will help but not so much at the top. Other 1p tents I'm thinking of are the tigerwall 1, lunar solo, ov forties, just to name a few. Now those might not have "more sit up room" . But to me they feel like I can twist around and change clothes without touching the bug net. Xmid just seemed narrow. However, this is just initial impressions. Time will tell. It's still a great tent. Thanks for the comment!
I love my yellow tigerwall!!
Great video... You would be the best at a Vs video. The Durston Vs the Asta Gear Yun Chuan 2p or 1p. Here in the UK the Durston costs with shipping and tax about £400. The Asta Gear about £150 all in. You should try it out, the quality is actually amazing for the money but the design isn't quite as good as the Durston maybe.
I’ve heard it’s easier to set up than other tents like a Z Pacs but it’s more difficult in rough terrain. The lack of guy lines and general design makes a tight pitch on uneven ground much more difficult
I very much agree with your considerations, big tent small living area. I was very disappointed when I pitched the tent the first time. After using the tent for a few months, I sold it.
Ja, du skulle have købt et Solid 2-personers. Jeg elsker mit! Perfekt til det danske vejr. Nyder i øvrigt dine videoer - tak for dem. Vh. Kim ✌️😄
@@kimpriessloft371 Mange tak skal du have. Ja der valgte jeg forkert😊
It's designed is more akin to Andrew Skurka's High Route 1 made by Sierra Designs than any other tent. I've had the x-mid 1, 2, and the star gazer add on which allows you to just set up the bug net since they were first sold on Mass Drop.
I meant to list but net only setup as a con. Star gamer would be great!
I love the tent but I agree it's been overhyped as a shelter all things equal. But what you get for the price! I don't think much can be done about the footprint, but I do think the orienting issue could be addressed with a design feature (colored tabs on the fly to denote the inner? Color the corresponding stake points? Just talk more about it in the "how to" or release photo/video helps?). Anyway, I think the xmid 1 is the best shelter they sell ("pro" moniker notwithstanding).
Thanks for sharing the video friend
Great vid as always, well most the time ;) I was going to buy the X-Mid pro but I need another tent like a hole in the head. I'm gonna go get some popcorn and wait for Dan Durston to reply here... :)
Haha oh I was hoping he didn't know I existed 🤣
@@BryceNewbold Too late :)
Wait no longer😂😂😂
I use the xmid 2p more then the pro 1. It's awkward to setup at normal campsites like on the AT. But the 2p feels like a mansion compared to most tents, and is still only 2.2 pounds. Even if I'm solo I'll take the 2p just to have massive tent room to bring all my toys that make my pack 40lbs. So far I love the durston. Coming from a lanshan 1 user mostly.
I traded my xmid 1p for the 2p - way better. Also, the Sierra Designs High Route was the first offset trekking pole tent (like this) that I saw 8+ years ago.
Hello from Panamá 🇵🇦. What kind of pillow do you recommend . Which one
I got a 2p and it's awesome. I have a ton of room and headroom. I've only owned two other tents and this blows them both out of the water.
The Goat from Sintax 77 Sarah! 😂 classic Bryce, just classic 😃
If UL tents would give you the option for pockets like the big Agnes copper spur and also put the magnet option like this, I’d shop for another tent
Almost fell over laughing with the running away from the drone scene…..awesome!! Thanks for another great review!
Hey!! Where are the Schill Brothers? Was watching one of your older videos and reminded me of them and I can’t find any info on what happened to them?
Went out to Mohican on Friday, camped at 3. Didn't see ya. Duplex and won't ever "buy" another unless I have to. Keep up the good vids!
Sierra designs had this tent design first, check out the. Hi route 1 and 2 person
Bryce if you don’t care for the durston I’ve got a Zpacks duplex it’s never seen ground. It’s never been pulled out out of its stuff sack it’s olive drab. I’ll take 550 for it with a new DCF footprint for the duplex from Zpacks. Then I could get a x mid pro2🙃
Here before Dan can comment ❤
I hope not. 😆.I mean it's a nice tent. My expectations were too high
Does the XMid 1 pro have enough room for my pack too? Or should I get the xmid 2 pro
Snap the xmid 2 pro if you want the pack inside your tent.
Just bought the 2pro over the winter. This is my first single wall, can’t wait to try it. Scared of the dreaded condensation. Other than leaving the vents open. Anyone have any tips to reduce it?
Bring a small towel with you to wipe it off in the AM.
Very nice video 😊
Hey if you don’t need the tent then give it here!! I have no tent, literally. Just using a tarp
Haha! Hey maybe I'll give it away if I end up not using it much
@@BryceNewbold ooooooooo don’t get my hopes up, bud xD
As soon as I recover from my foot surgery I will slide by and grab that tent so I can check it out! Cool?😂😂 how do you think this will compare to the Six Moon?
I would say fine but we all know I'm a great hoarder. 😆
T on with the review already!
I can’t wait to buy an x-mid; In ten years when my altaplex wears out:) oh wait, something new and better will be out by that time… looks like I’ll miss out on the x-mid altogether…
The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo will overcome most of your concerns and dislikes of the Dursten. No confusing geometry, sloping walls to deflect wind. Much greater interior useable floor space for having all of your gear inside with you for easy reach. One smaller vestibule. It also weighs less and as a higher denier sil-poly. Only one treking pole is needed. Has a smaller footprint. Offered in two different colors. Competitively priced. Check it out.
Hard disagree. That thing has even more headroom issues.
It feels... awkward. And setting up wud be a challenge especially day one using it. And it seems like one big sail. But I like the price and what u get it's an extremely affordable tent.
I like having two doors. Just personal preference.
Oh yea definitely personal preference!
Bryce works for outdoor vitals now so of course hes critical.
Commend the honest review of the tent. Ya might get some die-hards giving you some trash talk about this one but I agree with you. I'm diggin the hoverair too!
The zippers do get easier with use.
Good to know!
thank you! im also looking at this tent in the 2p form. great review
Thanks!
The 2P is great, especially if you’re 6’3 like me lol
Maybe you would like it better if it was purple and had a bottle opener on the wall.
If you’re wanting to rid of it I would buy it from you. Can’t ever seem to buy a 1p or 2p they’re always out of stock when I can afford it. I’d keep the money aside but life happens especially with kids.
Another plus for the x-mid is the price. Way more affordable than most tents in its class.
Is the footprint bigger than average? Yes. Has that ever been an issue for me. No. I backpack primarily PA, maybe other states you need more room to pitch?
I have used this tent for over a year now and am really happy with it.
Reviewing something without using it isn’t helpful.
Your right about the price! It is a great deal for that. I should have included that. Reviewing without testing isn't helpful your right. Thanks for watching this first impressions video.
👍👍👍
ONLY THING MORE ANNOYING THAN AN xmid IS THE FANS!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
Everybody should own this tent.
Oh yes, yes you did. Welcome to the X-mid gang. SO thoughtful of you...Oh wait, no , you blew your money on the drone. And yes you are the only one who thinks that. Plus, to get more headroom, you may be able to adjust the inner peaks so there isn't as much drape...
So done hearing about this tent
Why? Its amazing. Have two of them used them for more than 3000miles. And its a cheap tent. As someone that has harcore Hilleberg tents aswell and collect tent. The Durston truely deserves its praise (if you get it and understand the pitch). There are people that don't analise and get the pitch of it but that just means they haven't practiced enough 😊
Dang........the drone is out of stock.
well this got awkward. im not really anti chinese and was just here to see how the gear performed.
either way it was an interesting video.
How many times can an adult use the word “goofy’ to describe something.
I’ll stick with my zpacks, seems like a big footprint with little usable space on the Durston. I have no idea why people are all about this tent. Confusing and too much complexity with it being a 2 piece setup. Love the drone tho.
Awesome thanks for the truth about a Durston it's about time
I almost bought the xmid pro 1P but that angled interior seemed odd to me and looked like it would contribute to loss of usable interior space. After a lot of back and forth I decided on the tarptent Dipole 1 Li over the xmid.
Dan will be along shortly to tell you why his tent is the best thing since sliced bread.
How about another pro - can set up / pull-down the inner without getting all your stuff wet. It’s the best tent I’ve ever owned. Your cons are rubbish. Extra head room by adjusting the straps of the net higher. It’s 800g what do you expect and costs 200USD.
Hello,
My name is Sal and i wanted to thank you for all your videos as they have been instrumental in my journey of becoming a backpacker . Backpacking was new to me about 7 years ago , and it has really become a way to escape the challenges and rat race we call life . About 2 and half years ago my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor , and thankfully we were able to safely remove it without any complications . Her recovery on the other hand has been a bumpy road , and backpacking has been my main outlet . I am partnering with a local Phoenix non profit “The Gray Matters Foundation” that supports brain tumor patients and families and I will be building a “ Newbie Backpacker “ basket for their annual basket raffle event being held on May 11th and I was wondering if you would be willing to donate any items or discount codes for this event . I was hoping to introduce my passion of backpacking to either surviving patients or caregiver/companions like myself . Any support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Did Dan make fun of Yo Mama or somethin? 😂
This is a infomercial! Good grief
Dude, my man, you have a problem opening a zipper because it has some rubber on it? And a parallelogram got you confused and goofy? I am not saying you're going Dan Becker but you could definitely use a thru hike to grow back a pair. And I mean it in the nicest way
Pretty sure I never said I had a problem with the zip. I think I said something along the lines of "worth noting" ... so your drunk ass can get back in your tent easier at 4am 🤣.. just playing. The parrelogram isn't the confusing part. Setting up on a hill requires you to position the "square " tent at around a 22 degree angle to position your body correctly. I stand by claim. It's goofy af.. nice tent though. Just had high expectations from all the fanboys
This guy is a complete muppet.
...goofy to orient. You're welcome.
Haha. Thank you
I also just don't get it? there was no reason for this tent other than to placate people who whine about a pole in the middle of the Duplex - remember THOSE people are dumb as a bag of hair.
And its the toppish layer of our atmosphere ....pronounced the same - stratosphere. I don't spell for beans and I have the report cards to prove it ....what are the teaching in Ohio?
Love Greg
Wow another Xmid review!....yawn.
Will the last Xmid review turn out the lights when you leave.
LOL, so why are you even here than? 😂 every tent from every manufacturer is on every channel if it’s popular, the next big tent will have its 50+ reviews by the end of the first year, plus our guy here might have a new angle…that’s why I’m here! ❤
only around 2 years too late.
lucky he didn't like it
? Then don’t watch.
Don't let the door hit yeah where the good lord split yeah

Talk to the HoverAir people and see if you can get us more than $15 off. That’s a pretty sad offer. 🫤
Also, what did you mean when you said you can fly the drone with the app on your phone but it’s kind of hard. Do you mean the app doesn’t work well?
I’m not sure if I like the tent, but I definitely like the drone.
Thanks
