Hi Paul. I am a Serving Army Officer with 44 years Service behind me and have spent most of my spare time in the hills and mountains of the UK and overseas. I have watched your videos for many years and i would like to say a huge thank you for outstanding hints, tips, and amazing video footage of your trips. Take Care buddy, keep up the great videos!
Thanks for this great news Paul 👍 As someone who just missed out on getting one of Norman's classic SNCs back in 2020 (for my Alpkit Mytipot 900) before he sadly passed away - it is great to see that another outdoor enthusiast has taken up the torch. Norman poured his heart into his products, and his clever design deserves to live on in a revised and modernised form. So good luck to these guys..!
I've just pledged, the Kickstarter has now smashed it over the line thanks to your vlog, it seems to have given it enough impetus to easily make the target.
Brilliant bit of kit mate. I do hope you achieve your dream of getting this to market. You deserve it. I'll be using this as my go to alcohol stove going forward. Thanks for sending it
Hi Paul, I bought the Stormin Norman cone back in 2019 after watching one of your videos. I have a fair few other stove systems but i always come back to the Stormin cone due to its simplicity and lightweight. Ive always felt lucky that i got one before Norman sadly passed away. Im pleased to see that the Stripy Hat Guy has released his own version as this is a brilliant system to own. Thanks for the video Paul.
Thanks Paul for your graft with these lovely videos, for supporting a sibling wild camper with his fab little business, for making it “ok” to be a normal bloke, for involving your missus, for making me smile, and for having a very natural gift for talking about your/our interest so watchably (if that’s even a word!). I even got my missus to watch one of your videos and told her “This is the bloke I watch” so she could better understand (or permit!😂) my hobby. I’ve pledged £85 for the full set too as after starting in alcohol stoves, then trying gas, I realised on my Hadrians Wall sea to sea (to Tynemouth, past Wallsend) that alcohol is my go to hands down. Bless your good and generous heart ❤️
Pledged my dosh about 10 days ago, glad to hear its made the target now 👍👍. Just got to Puck you up slightly on one point. Trail Designs Caldera is very similar ( if not cheaper) so long as you use a reshipping service. Yes, granted, if you go for the Fissure Ti-tri, which is virtually identical to the Stormin cone, its a lit more, but a standard Caldera code is comparable on price. That said, I'm happy that we can buy UK made gear over US. Well done Stripey. Good effort 👍👍👍
Hi Paul, some valid and good points. Unfortunately we are just starting and the material prices in low quantities is just ridiculous for titanium. This cone is as light and efficient as it gets, hence the bigger pot surface instead of a more narrow one. Right now we are focusing on manufacturing the kickstarter cones and I am sure that in the future we will bring out more pot sizes as well as a more budget friendly option out of ordinary stainless steel. Thanks a lot Stripey
Best video for so many reasons Paul. I remember watching Stripeys video about getting it made, this hopefully is the kick start he needs and deserves, i for one will be buying one to help him. Thanks for sharing this 👍👍
Love it and how light weight it is. Won't lie I could make this in my garage quite easily. Could source it from aluminum cans as well. Could also make them in different sizes. The mold and specs for this is wildly easy to recreate with a couple basic shop tools. Much better route to take then asking a company to produce it.
Reminds me of the Caldera Cone. Both are smart in the way they capture the heat and make a very efficient use of it. After a lot of decision making I went with the Evernew Titanium Appalachian set many years ago. It's 5.7 ounces and all solid , no folding or anything else but setting it up and cooking. .
I love this video. I have been watching gear reviews for years. I have only ever been car camping , so ultra light has never been an issue. My stoves are a range of Firebox and Solo stoves. These days I look after my 92 year old mother full time, but you never know if there might be a few road trips left in my future
I suppose if you had been out in the windy field you started it could have been a problem that the wind takes hold of the windshield just when you reached boiling temperature. Then you’d perhaps need three hands to both hold the pot, also hold the canister you’ll be pouring into, and then also making sure the windshield doesn’t blow away. Therefore I would suggest using two extra tent pegs that could be inserted through the air venting holes at the bottom, and drive them into the ground underneath the burner. Great video!
I'm glad to see it's not just me that thinks of everything and then forgets the single most basic thing...Great video again Paul...I've put into the funding ...looks a good peice of kit.
I've already put my money down for this set-up....... I'm sure, fingers crossed, that they'll hit the target. It's a fantastic light-weight set, and as you've said Paul, should last for years if looked after. ATB
Great review Paul, and well done to @StripeyHatGuy for coming up with this. Up to over £15k now 👍 Now I must convince myself "I don't need another stove, I don't need another stove" (As I've just hit the back this product button 🤣)
That's fantastic! I've been babying the Stormin Stove for my MSR Kettle for years now, knowing that there was no substitute. Well... I have a Caldera Cone for it as well, but being a single piece of metal sheet that one just isn't practical to me. Good to know a new solution is on the horizon, should I ever mess up my trusty Stormin!
im sold on this, i like my little gas camping stove for its burner control but having this would be so handy, its worth the space and weight to take it as a backup, not to mention you can easily carry extra fuel without losing a load of packspace
Pleased to see this is already well past the target and going strong. Cheers to you for pointing it out and cheers to StripeyHatGuy for having the balls to do it. My pledge. alpng with about 280 others, is in!
Look at speedster stoves and shield/stand. Different design but works the same. Brilliant bit of kit, plus they will make them to fit your existing pot cup etc.😊😊
Love my stormin normin cone, this was something I was thinking of doing myself but never got around to it with other things going on in my life. Good luck to whoever decided to copy Norman's idea. If it's anything like Norman's design which it definitely appears to be, it will be a very good stove to have.good luck!
I've enjoyed your videos, just watched the one on how you became a TH-camr and the recent changes. I tried alcohol stoves for the first time after seeing them on TH-cam, and wow I LOVE the lack of noise! I'm not in that big a hurry so boil times aren't a thing. As for being a full time TH-camr, I can't even imagine. A friend wanted me to start a channel with him doing camping sorts of things but I'm not of the look-at-me generation, and with the bitter competition I just didn't have it in me. I salute anyone willing to jump off the cliff to be their own boss, so congratulations and I hope it's all working out.
Looks interesting. I’m in Dallas, Texas, and I just spent a load to get the X-Boil, shipped internationally, after being unable to procure an original Caldera Cone. One disadvantage of the cone is that it only fits one pot, so offers no flexibility of which pot to take, whereas the X-boil accommodates different sizes of pots (to a degree). It also is not as fiddly to set up, since it is in one piece, with just little brackets set on top. The X-boil does take approximately 1.5 minutes longer to boil water, with the smallest of 3 included can stoves, than your new setup. It is more readily available in the UK, being from Germany, than it was for me in the U.S. I paid a chunk for shipping! Glad to see a new company onto this stellar design!
There are lots of options similar to the X-Boil that are vertical so open around the top. More flexible but less efficient, which is what this design is all about. The speedster stoves "Combined windscreen and pot rest" (catchy name) is a cheap and effective example.
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. It looks to be a nice little System and once a price has been settled on, one would know how to proceed further. It appears to be a 'variation on a theme' .. the German-based 'X-Boil' being another and I presume that there are other / similar out there. It is always good to support local industry and one wishes them all good fortune in their endeavour.
The one problem I see with that is the use in wind; it may blow away spilling burner and/or fuel, once the water has heated and the pot removed for pouring into one’s crouton infested soup! Occurred to me the other day when I used my home made one when out on D-Day homage, silently trekking a French resistance track from France into Switzerland and it was very blowy amongst the pines and beech woods. Cheers.
That’s a cracking piece of kit. So light and so small. A nice save on space and weight. Went to Kickstarter to check it out, but unfortunately they won’t ship to Norway? That was quite disappointing. I get that Norway isn’t in the EU, but the UK isn’t in the EU anymore either? Hope they change their minds about this. I would love to get my hands on that kit. ATB from Norway 🇳🇴
Glad to see Stripey making theses stoves in the UK. Unfortunately alcohol stove use is on the wane here in Northern California due to fire restrictions and the state of California prohibits the sale of denatured alcohol here. I have a Caldera Cone set-up but mostly use canister stoves now.
I’ve made several of those round tin alcohol burners and through trial and error, emphasis on error, the best way to extinguish the flame is to just blow a quick breath. I’ve tried using the lid and sometimes I’ve melted the gasket.
Love it. I'd love to see it with a Toaks 750ml, but I do see the advantage of more of a pot than a deeper cup (which is what the Toaks 750ml is). I've come to really hate the isobutane stove noise. I'm never in that much of a hurry, quite frankly; there's something to be said for slowing down, especially if you're just cooking some reheated food and letting that aroma drift on the breeze as you're hanging out at camp unwinding from the day.
Thanks for introducing me to yet another piece of kit that I now feel like I cannot live without 😆. UPDATE: I've just backend their Kickstarter project 🙂
I'm with you Paul love my stormin Norman and I'm 100% backing Stripey with this, in fact just posted his kickstarter on a couple of groups this morning! It was actually one of your subs who kindly sent me my Stormin Norman after I posted a comment on one of your videos! ❤😊
Thank you SO MUCH for this! Like you, I've searching for something like your old "Stormin' Norman"setup. I'm headed to the Kickstarter...right after your video ends!
Yes, Paul is here right. We tried to get started which we are now. After delivering our promised and funded FeatherLight 700 (FL700) further pot sizes will follow the 700 refers to the pot size. Thank you all so much for your support! ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy amazing. What you’re doing is great. Not sure I want to wait for a 750 cone. Might just bite the bullet and get the 700 set 😂. Massive congrats on getting the funding you needed. Good luck with it!
@@holmesaway thank you very much mate! Can only say it was triggered by the community and it was funded from the community! Hope really that people will enjoy it as much as Paul did!
It’s great to see. Are you not aware of the Vesuv which can be bought from Valley and Peak? It’s virtually the same but is a straight ‘chimney’ rather than a cone.
Good vid. Didn't take much to make it. Good looking simple stove setup. I don't have an alcohol stove so this vould be the one. Thanks. Keep track of the days
No alcohol stove? Make your own. An Aluminium Soft Drink Can, some Ceramic / Glass Wool or Fibre Glass (all 'salvaged') and a SAK with an Awl. 30 minutes (if that) and Bob's your Uncle.
The first thing I thought when I saw it was "Caldera Cone". I've had one of the Ti-Tri models for about fifteen years. It's a shame about the shipping, but I suppose that helps keep your own makers up and running. I run into the same thing when I want to order Chill Cheater paddling gear from the UK. The price is reasonable, but the taxes and shipping are ridiculous. I imagine the US is the "China" of cottage gear for the rest of the world....just not cheap enough.
Reckon I’ll be getting one of these, I have an old stormin Norman but when I tried getting in contact with him to get a larger one made for a titan kettle I discovered the legendary chap had passed. It’s taken far too long for someone to take up his mantel, I’m genuinely excited to see how this one matches up.
Thank you very much and yes I can understand it. Unfortunately the raw material prices are ridiculously high and with production number in the 3 figures there not much we can do. Thank you so much for your wishes mate 🙌
Aaah! Dont use the lid that way. Blow it out or use the outer side of the lid. There is usually a seal on the inside that will get damaged. I was shouting at the telly when you did that Paul.
I remember you showing that cone....and you saying you couldn't get them anymore. And yes, I looked into it and found that the Caldera Cone was impossible to get, or not cheaply. So I made my own! Been using my own cone for most of this year, with my Fire Maple pot. But I'd be interested in getting a properly made one. My aluminium foil knock-off cone makes a MASSIVE difference in fuel, so I bet this would be even better - but mine is not that durable.
Still have a single piece Ti Stormin Stove for the 700ml Enernew Ti Pott. Never used it much, BRS3000 became a strong alternative, but it sure is a cool kit made in the UK.
If you want to increase the efficiency a bit more at low weight, take some high heat silicone (usually loaded with thermally conductive carbon black or copper particles) and then put some raised silicone dots on the inside of the titanium and lightly adhere* some _heavy duty_ aluminum foil or aluminum flashing to the inside of the titanium, obviously not covering the holes. If using aluminum foil, the shiny side needs to face the pot/fire. (* meaning, don't squish it down too much, you want to keep some air space between the two metal surfaces). The flashing on the other hand, will definitely add some weight, but the nice thing about flashing is that you can get it to a mirror polish pretty easily (before you adhere it to the Ti!), and it is a lot more durable/long lasting. Once in a great while, just give a little touch up repolish. (Much, much, much harder to do that with the aluminum foil). Mirror polish aluminum surface is one of, if not the best, IR reflecting materials around, and can reflect up to 95 to 97% or so of _thermal range_ IR (the IR spectrum is very vast, and thermal IR is in the middle, called mid IR. It would reflect more thermal/mid IR if it didn't get oxidized so quickly (industry uses super, super thin, special coatings to counterbalance that, but that is beyond DIY). Anyways, between the little extra insulation of the silicone + air space, and more so the IR reflecting of the shiny aluminum, you'll get a more efficiently heating system.
Cones are probably the best way to use an alcohol burner but I have opted for the convenience of gas in recent years. I had looked at cones but had missed the boat or they weren’t easy to get, hopefully this comes to fruition and I have backed the project.
Looks great, but I will wait until it has been engineered for larger than a 700ml pot. If I recall correctly, Stormin Norman customized to several brands and pot capacities (?). But a Kickstarter project has to start somewhere 👍
Nice! Although I'm sticking with my Trail Designs Sidewinder and 900ml Toaks pot. I was lucky enough to buy one back when shipping from the US wasn't quite so expensive.
Iam a trangia user .. I was always gutted I didn't get one of Normans.. so I shan't miss out this time... I do watch stripey!! Wonder how I missed this... thanks for the heads up.Take care out there.
Wonder if you could get a cone-type setup to work for a Sea To Summit X-Kettle? The challenge would be making sure that the cone (and any flame) doesn't go up the side onto the silicone. If you could, would be a great setup for a slim-line cookset (be great for a sidepocket in a framebag for bikepacking!)

It’s great to see. Are you not aware of the Vesuv which can be bought from Valley and Peak? It’s virtually the same but is a straight ‘chimney’ rather than a cone.
Yes I have one. The press studs on mine are all bent and difficult to unclip now. It does a job though
Best to use the lid upside down to snuff the burner out!
I’ll be looking at this with interest. Always liked the Norman. Also. Made with German 🇩🇪 efficiency. Can’t lose. 👍
@@thomasmusso1147 30 or less nothing to them. When young we cooked much the same with carbide.
Wonderful! I like the part where it’s quiet 🤫!
Lovely bit of kit Paul. I just can't justify the cost. I wish stripey hat all the luck in the world.
Thank you very much and yes I can understand it. Unfortunately the raw material prices are ridiculously high and with production number in the 3 figures there not much we can do. Thank you so much for your wishes mate 🙌
Will be buying one when it comes out 👍.
Yayyy all pledged up, fingers 🤞 for this camping cook set, thanks Paul and the Stripey Hat Guy, awesome.
Brilliant video Paul, good to see an unbiased view of the stove!
Aaah! Dont use the lid that way. Blow it out or use the outer side of the lid. There is usually a seal on the inside that will get damaged.
I was shouting at the telly when you did that Paul.
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Paul from down under wish u well hope this takes off
Not sure what advantage this stove is over using say a pocket rocket or jet boil type stove?
Just backed it, looks like a nice kit. I could make one myself, I can lay my hands on both aluminium and titanium sheet, but this is easier...
Looks really good. Look forward to trying it out in Sept 👍🏻
Nice design
- Spiny Norman
Great stove! I love the gnomes in the background too.❤
I hope everyone backs this, always wanted a stormin norman since seeing it.. this is an ideal replacement for it
If you want to increase the efficiency a bit more at low weight, take some high heat silicone (usually loaded with thermally conductive carbon black or copper particles) and then put some raised silicone dots on the inside of the titanium and lightly adhere* some _heavy duty_ aluminum foil or aluminum flashing to the inside of the titanium, obviously not covering the holes.
I looked at getting the similar one from the US but it never seemed to be available, I think due to problems getting the materials
@@HoratioChinn Same, I think it was prohibitively expensive as well to import it.
5:48 mark - I recognize that pint glass 🙂
Looks great, but I will wait until it has been engineered for larger than a 700ml pot. If I recall correctly, Stormin Norman customized to several brands and pot capacities (?). But a Kickstarter project has to start somewhere 👍
This would work with the Toaks 1100 (1.1L) or any 115mm diameter pot, per the Kickstarter.
That's my plan for 1 vs 2 person trips.
Got mine today. So excited!
still have my stormin normin stove :) I treasure it so much..
You look to be in a good place and happy And another good video
I'm enjoying these daily vlogs. Good luck on completing your challenge
Nice! Although I'm sticking with my Trail Designs Sidewinder and 900ml Toaks pot. I was lucky enough to buy one back when shipping from the US wasn't quite so expensive.
About time I saw my new stormin Norman stove again 🤣🤘
I must give it back to you 😂
Great video Paul, that stove looks the business, hope you are well.
Would be great to back it but no shipping to Australia
I bet that would work well with a Trangia Alcohol Burner, which self-pressurises through heat build-up in the Burner
Love the video, thanks for sharing. Uniquely you and uniquely British!
the old caldera cone, seem to be quite effective.
Never supported a Kickstarter before but I might just do it for this one
Looks awesome
Iam a trangia user .. I was always gutted I didn't get one of Normans.. so I shan't miss out this time... I do watch stripey!! Wonder how I missed this... thanks for the heads up.Take care out there.
Epic vid
Loving the format
Nearly £26k so far raised, well done to Stripey.
This is what we achieved together! Without you guys it wouldn’t have been possible.
