My dad tells me the best part about Deftones is that they have a song for whatever mood your in, and for every type of person, at least one song. I'm so glad my dad showed me Deftones.
listen to "hum-youd prefer an astronaut" , thats the sound deftones kinda ripped off for white pony, even the white pony cover is a nod to that album knife party is little dipper just played faster no hate tho, deftones is my fav band ever
Grew up in central California in the late 90s early 2000s Deftones was such a huge part of that they looked like us they talked like us and played music so original and with such feeling. White Pony is a true part of my youth.
I graduated HS in ‘99 and Deftones were a main staple in my music diet. I’ve seen them in concert more than any other band… I’m glad they never went as mainstream as LB or LP. The fans they’ve gained in almost 30 years is a testament to their never-ending talent. 🥰❤️
I can at any point in the day, in whatever mood I'm in, listen to deftones. Even to this day. I first really heard recognized them because a girl introduced me to the music. I had heard change before but never really sought out their band. I owe my love of deftones to Kristin. Where ever you are. I hope your happy and loved.

THANK YOU!!! SO MUCH!!! FOR COVERING THIS!!! One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands, I feel like Deftones gets written off with a lot of the nu-metal from the early 2000s but they are so, so different. Thanks for doing them justice!!!
passenger is still one of my most favorite songs to exist. i've listened to it, easily, thousands of times and i'm still not sick of it. still not sick of ANYTHING by deftones. they're timeless.
I had all of their albums, and being from Sacramento myself, I felt kind of protective of them, if that makes sense. Knife Party was my fave from White Pony.
Deftones has my eternal respect. They were a huge influence on me musically. And i love the philosophy they had in choosing longevity and creative integrity over instant fame and sales.
I love this album so much, it lowkey shaped my taste in music. My favourite track on it is RX Queen, it manages to somehow be both very ugly and beautiful at the same time.
I had to cut your video short. "Their fanbase" got it immediately. It was the nu-metal swarm that followed Around the Fur that was confused by White Pony.
Yeah, they started playing Change a week or two on the radio before the actual release of White Pony. I felt an instant gravitation towards it and bought the record right when it came out and devoured it.
White Pony is one of my favourite albums. Im 47 and i still listen to it regulary. I have a white pony wallpaper on my phone, I like it when people notice it "oh that's a nice wallpaper" and I get to explain what white pony is, both the album and the seedy slang name, both make me wanna take a shower, they captured the sleaze and grime of the sex and drugs and parties so well it takes me right back to those horrible greasy sordid days of the early 2000s.
I still remember how i even discovered Deftones, it was a little over a year ago and i was on my way to the library to go do homework after class, and on the way there i was listening to Slipknot's WANYK album considering it had recently come out. I had just finished the last song on the album when i got on the elevator and the randomizer on spotify threw me My Own Summer. After that day i got so into their music that i cant even go a week without listening to any of their albums. Their music just entangles what the 90s were perfectly and how teenagers were like back then. Im only 21 so i couldnt enjoy the 90s how many other people did. But their music, especially the Around the Fur album just gives me that nostalgic feel like if i was actually a teenager during the 90s. Its hard to explain. But anyways, its safe to say that im extremely excited for their new album. And for my White Pony IPA's to come in the mail 🤝
Lol I relate to you so much. That’s actually how I am getting into alot of new bands, through Spotify. I was born in 99’ so didn’t experience the 90’s either sadly.
They might not like having Back to School as the first track, but it provides a great thematic circle for the album. I felt like it made the last track and the whole album that much more mythic.
I agree. I don't get the hate for Back to School. While it is the band`s dated song, it was a much better attempt to be rap metal than their contemporaries.
Knife Party was the first Deftones song I ever heard. It was love at first listen. White Pony is legitimately one of the best and most complete-package albums in modern history. They really made something ahead of its time.
Although "Be quiet and drive" is my favorite song, I did not like "Around the fur" very much as a whole. White Pony is indeed something that grows on you, that you appreciate more after each play, like Tool or Pink Floyd.
@@mmtutoriaisbr I kind of agree, though personally, and don't hate me for saying this, I haven't liked the new album as much either. Ceremony is good, but I just don't match with the music as much on this one.
@@Zander_Schilling After 9 months my opinion didnt change hahaha. I rlly like more Adrenaline and Saturday Night Wrist than Around The Fur. And I respect your opinion, I like Around The Fur, there are some great songs in it like My Own Summer,Rickets,Be Quiet and Drive,Lotion and MX, but I think its the worst record by them, but is still a good record. Deftones is awesome. EDIT: I rlly liked Ohms btw
@@mmtutoriaisbr I personally like White Pony and Diamond Eyes the best, and I like Ohms and Around the Fur the least, though Be Quiet and Drive and My Own Summer are two of my favorite songs in general.
It seems like their label, Maverick, were trying too hard to have influence on many of their bands at the time. Maverick were Muse's American label at that time, and tried to do the same to Muse for their album Origin of Symmetry and in particular the track Plug In Baby, telling them to re-record the track without falsetto and tone down the record as a whole. Maverick did not consider Bellamy's vocals radio-friendly. The band refused and left Maverick; consequently the album was not released in the US until September 2005 instead of 2001 when it saw release everywhere else. The album peaked at number 3 in the UK, with Plug In Baby reaching number 11 in the charts and becoming a fan favorite worldwide.
@@Gabe511 Same, didn't discover them till Absolution and even after that couldn't find the other albums anyplace. Had to buy Showbiz on Ebay and found an import copy of Origin at Virgin Megastore during a trip to Chicago.
I'll never forget the first time I saw Deftones in concert. It was Halloween night of 2000 and they were touring for White Pony, and he came out on stage wearing a Jheri curl wig 🤣🤣 At one point between songs, Chino was talking to the crowd and someone yelled "Give me your ring!" He answered, "My ring? Fred Durst gave me this ring". Then he said, "Fuck it", slipped it off his finger and tossed it into the crowd. I've lost count how many times I've seen them since... must be 8 or 9 times, they're my hands-down favorite. Even got to meet and shake Chino's hand once when I ended up standing right behind him in the ticket line for a Team Sleep show. I didn't expect him to be so tall.. I'm 5'11" and he dwarfed me lol
@@junkyardwillie8320 yeah that's what I figured for years, too... 5'9" or so. I remember watching Deftones play "Be Quiet and Drive" live on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Chino looked small next to him, but later learned that Conan is actually 6'4", so I guess that's why he looked so short in comparison. But yeah, Chino stood a good couple inches over me when I met him. I really didn't think it was him at first because of how tall he was.
@@arjunnijhawan7231 it was actually a really good show. Sound engineering was really good and clear, and it was in a much smaller venue than you'd see Deftones play in... the place probably had a 300 person capacity, tops.
Out of every band I love in any genre Deftones are the most essential. They are still my personal favorite. The only band I can think of from the 90s that got better with time. I'd argue the next 3 albums after White Pony are their most important.
I remember the first time I was introduced to White Pony, I was seeing a guy who was already in an abusive relationship a week before my eighteenth birthday and told me to listen to the album whilst we were opening up to each other at 11pm, for the whole of pink maggit I felt paralysed and couldn’t move as I just felt both his and my own emotions rush over me. Even though nothing came of this relationship, he’s still with his abuser sadly and we no longer talk to each other despite being in the same friendship group and often being in social situations together, every time I hear Pink Maggit and Knife Prty my mind still wonders to him as my body freezes up.
Crøst Dærgön There was a point a few weeks ago where I saw him every day but we must have only spoken once or twice alone when not with our mutual friendship group. He seems to have taken lockdown pretty hard and although things with the girlfriend seem okay on the surface our friends have told me things have became even more manipulative.
Megan seems to me that this abusive relationship is completely on his hands. No one can really do anything about it. I wish you the best and may music ease the way.
I learned how to skateboard while listening to Around the Fur, so I love the heaviness of that album, there's a lot of memories in that one, but I immediately loved White Pony because I love melodic music. WP is melodic, and heavy, and to this day, because Tool and APC are my favorite bands, I absolutely loved Passenger. Digital Bath is the second best record on that album, and I'm so glad I got to live through those years as a teenager. I'm still... to this day, in love with White Pony
Korea is easily my favorite track on White Pony, and it’s still one of my favorite albums of all time. I think only Diamond Eyes has come close to replicating it
You knocked it out of the park with this one. I actually prefer ‘Around the Fur’ overall and consider it an all time favourite, but ‘White Pony’ is an excellent record as well.
Knife party is my favorite track off the record. Perfectly captures all the styles and influences the band uses and the guitar in the beginning is amazing.
This video was such a delightful way to start my 3-day weekend. Sipping coffee in bed and listening to the best music historian/essay channel on TH-cam. Aloha Also: Rx Queen is my favorite song on White Pony.
My favorite Deftones on White Pony are "Rx Queen", "Street Carp", "Korea", and "Change..." I was fan (and still) of White Pony since Day Zero it was released! It was radically different, disturbing, and haunting....all in a great way! This is what differentiated Deftones from the rest of the so called 'nu metal' ilk because they dared to be different by defying the status quo. The band incorporated their various influences (from different genres) into their near masterpiece making it a very complex, angular, yet ironically accessible release. But, that is my unhumbled opinion.
You didn't mention this in the video, but White Pony was also a huge influence on Charlie Simpson. Fightstar's debut album has influence from White Pony all over it. The birth, death and rebirth of Busted is actually a topic you should do if you haven't done it already. It's a really interesting story and there's plenty of interviews from all three of the members that talks about it, as well as stuff Charlie said during the original Fightstar run.
I love these guy's & am very nostalgic of their '90s & early 2000's but was pleasantly surprised seeing they just dropped a new video!!! Geat CONTENT!!! Very well done!!!
I loved that album all the way through (without back to school), I remember buying it at Sam Goody, coming home and just had in my cd player, I had my headphones on and I just kept listening to it. This album has so much inspiration on newer bands and people want to just push this one to the side when it came out, the album to me is a masterpiece
I got this album for my 16th birthday that year... I've seen Deftones about 20 times since then, somehow met their crew and got to go to a bunch of shows in the 2010s (not as a groupie) and I have a white pony tattooed on my forearm... Even now as a conservative Christian mother of 4, Deftones will always be one of my first loves.
I love your videos man. I learn things about bands I thought I knew everything about, you obviously research your subjects massively. Keep up the good work.
Great video, loved this album ever since release. I do recall friends losing favor of the band for not being as "hard" as previous records but me being a big fan of shoegaze loved it. Had a very dark, distant feeling my favorites had to be Passenger or Pink Maggit.
Fun fact: the girl who sings on "Knife Prty" made a movie called "The Bunny Game". No spoiling anything but it is genuinely the most Disturbing thing I've ever seen.
@@Paranoid-loser From what I remember reading about it: She sustained a traumatic brain injury and damage to her upper spine from a fall where she landed on her head. The lasting effects being chronic pain centered from the injury and difficulty with balance, mobility, and doing normal activities. She's permanently disabled for sure, but she's still active on her social media accounts, so I wouldn't say she's in a vegetative state.
I saw them perform at a Southern California music festival in 1999; they absolutely rocked the stage and made the crowd go berserk. Excellent times, indeed.
My favorite band ever! I never grow tired of hearing all of their albums. Around the Fur being my favorite album from them since it was the first time I ever heard them. I can't wait to hear their new album when it drops!
The grey cover is the true version of the album, and Pink Magit is the only real version of Back To School. That’s the version I bought from the store on June 20, 2000. I do however wish “The Boy’s Republic” was included on the album proper though.
Brilliant band with an amazing record. Very glad to have this video. I don't know if your process includes room for suggestions or requests, but I'd love to see you cast your eye over either Tool or Placebo. These videos are fantastic, incredibly well-researched and really fascinating
wow, I feel so thankful for this! this is a amazing piece of work! I have been following Deftones' music for so long now! this was very insightful and inspiring. so thanks again! and thank you Deftones!
Nu-metal can still be Deftones. Deftones can still be classified as Nu-metal. Nu-metal doesn't have to be nor is it exclusively bands like Saliva, 3 Days Grace, Papa Roach, etc. I genuinely wish people would open their minds to what the foundation of what Nu-metal was, is and always has been: an eclectic, tasty mishmash/amalgamation of genres and sub-genres coming together to form something creative and diverse. In that sense, Deftones are a textbook Nu-metal band right up to their recent album Ohms.....and that is NOT a bad thing at all. I love the Deftones entire discography.

@@sagddesign78 naw bruh, it takes some listening to get used to it. I didnt like it either at first but it eventually grew on me. Lets be real though, the earlier albums for any band are always the best. Thats just the reality of music. But i still think Gore was a good album.
Pink Cellphone
My dad tells me the best part about Deftones is that they have a song for whatever mood your in, and for every type of person, at least one song.
I'm so glad my dad showed me Deftones.
Cool dad
Cool Dad
They probably like the Smiths, but I can't really hear it. When it comes to melody Chino is so clearly influenced by Duran Duran and Sade.
listen to "hum-youd prefer an astronaut" , thats the sound deftones kinda ripped off for white pony, even the white pony cover is a nod to that album
knife party is little dipper just played faster
no hate tho, deftones is my fav band ever
consequently Deftones did a great cover of 'Please please Please let me get what i want'
They do great covers of " please let me get what I want" and " asleep"
No ordinary love cover as well
There's a few lyrical nods to Smiths songs on White Pony.
Korea, favorite song on the album. It was too heavy to be a mainstream single, but I'm still transfixed by it.
White Pony is why I became a musician.
Grew up in central California in the late 90s early 2000s Deftones was such a huge part of that they looked like us they talked like us and played music so original and with such feeling. White Pony is a true part of my youth.
so beautiful, thank you for sharing this 💜
Digital Bath. Greatest drum sound ever on a rock record. Can’t wait to hear what they do with Terry Date back at the helm.
That Tama bell-brass snare is iconic. And it was a rental! The video about it is on TH-cam.
Abe for sure has a style that is slick and cool. He is not a super technical player, but I love the feel he puts into their songs.
WHAT SCOTT WAS ON RX QUEEN THATS SOOOOO LEGENDARY
lmao just found that out too
hi daron
I had no idea.
I graduated HS in ‘99 and Deftones were a main staple in my music diet. I’ve seen them in concert more than any other band… I’m glad they never went as mainstream as LB or LP. The fans they’ve gained in almost 30 years is a testament to their never-ending talent. 🥰❤️
this was one of the first 'heavy' albums I heard and I found Knife Party genuinely frightening. love it to this day.
The fact that there is a Kool Keith connection to this album makes me love it even more.
There's some Kool Keith lyrics Chino lifted in "Back To School" as well.
@@kidpresentable Nice
I'll be the man, watch your backpack pens and pencils
i used to mostly listen to deathcore metal but deftones has such a heavy tune while having softer parts too it’s so good i don’t know if i can finds anyone with the same sound
Just learned about Rolo Tomassi from this video, and that is some good stuff!
Man its wierd seeing people you're subbed too show up in comments
Same
such a good band
Rolo Tomassi released the only album that i consider better than Daughters' You Won't Get What You Want in 2018.
Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It is a piece of art.
I saw rolo Tomassi live but I just couldn’t get into them.
This is a MUST HAVE album for any collection worth a damn
agreed. it still holds up and it is an undisputed classic. i prefer the first edition as it just felt right and it was already perfect.
Same!
Knife party and Korea!
100000000%
I had to cut your video short. "Their fanbase" got it immediately. It was the nu-metal swarm that followed Around the Fur that was confused by White Pony.
Yeah, they started playing Change a week or two on the radio before the actual release of White Pony. I felt an instant gravitation towards it and bought the record right when it came out and devoured it.
Ah, I've found my people.
Still a mind-blowingly great album.
20 years and it is still in my consistent rotation of albums.
i’m deadass in tears, i had no clue that scott was in rx queen.
I know he seemed like more of a street drug fan.
"Talent and cocaine."
Wow, that was a short video.

Lol I need some coke then
Don't forget Tony Hawk Pro Skater
Maybe a lot of drugs but no talent

I was a teen in the 90’s and this album probably more than any other captures that time entirely
The best TH-cam music channel covering one of my favorite albums of all time. I still can't believe this is happening.
Unpopular Opinion:Around The Fur is their least good album.
@@mmtutoriaisbr wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
@@mmtutoriaisbr I personally like White Pony and Diamond Eyes the best, and I like Ohms and Around the Fur the least, though Be Quiet and Drive and My Own Summer are two of my favorite songs in general.
i read somewhere that deftones are "the radiohead of metal" and I never agreed more
Didn't realize this record would be so influential all these years later. Kind of forgot them after high school, but yeah Deftones rocked.
Nothing gets me more nostalgic than be quiet and drive (far away) open rift.
Also, Muse are huge Deftones fans. They play the riffs from Headup, My Own Summer, and Bored during shows sometimes.
Great detail
Darby Sagala Matt will sometimes play a Rage riff during the intro to Hysteria live and will close the song out with Back In Black
I couldn’t even find their first two albums in stores until after Absolution dropped
@@Gabe511 Same, didn't discover them till Absolution and even after that couldn't find the other albums anyplace.
Had to buy Showbiz on Ebay and found an import copy of Origin at Virgin Megastore during a trip to Chicago.
That album, still holds up as a masterpiece. It moves me today, just as it did in 2000. Doesn't get much better than that.
Facts
I miss the PacMan inspired White Pony game that was on the cd when you put it in your computer. 🤘🏾
The Enhanced CDs of the 90's. I still have a few of them.
To this day there are people who bought that CD yet don't know this.
I should boot that up. Been a few years!
with the MIDI "my own summer" melody! lmao

One of the most consistent bands out there. So psyched for Ohms!
i have a 976-EVIL tattoo on my left forearm. i will never not love this band.
What is the tattoo? Just the song title?
Tasteful song choice. A very dreamy love song from diamond eyes.
Nice! I have the white pony on my arm
I always say if I ever get a tattoo my first one will be Deftones related. Fav band by far
You should check out the movie of the same name. Especially if you like campy 80’s horror cult movies !
chino said it, don't compromise your art. long term succes and staying true to yourself is the most important thing about it.
I'll never forget the first time I saw Deftones in concert. It was Halloween night of 2000 and they were touring for White Pony, and he came out on stage wearing a Jheri curl wig 🤣🤣
At one point between songs, Chino was talking to the crowd and someone yelled "Give me your ring!" He answered, "My ring? Fred Durst gave me this ring". Then he said, "Fuck it", slipped it off his finger and tossed it into the crowd.
I've lost count how many times I've seen them since... must be 8 or 9 times, they're my hands-down favorite. Even got to meet and shake Chino's hand once when I ended up standing right behind him in the ticket line for a Team Sleep show. I didn't expect him to be so tall.. I'm 5'11" and he dwarfed me lol
What? Really? I’ve always heard people say he was more like 5 9/10. Interesting. I never really pictured him as a taller guy either
Ah. Maybe they got 5 9 from a google search, but other pictures make it look like 6 foot, maybe 6 1. Dumb google
What were Team Sleep like live? Just heard their album for the first time in a while.
@@arjunnijhawan7231 it was actually a really good show. Sound engineering was really good and clear, and it was in a much smaller venue than you'd see Deftones play in... the place probably had a 300 person capacity, tops.
Queen of the Damned bathtube scene with Change in background sound, oh man, its simply beautiful and powerful !
That's a pretty cool reference point for Change! Even though Queen of the Damned had more to do with KoRn than Deftones....
Out of every band I love in any genre Deftones are the most essential. They are still my personal favorite. The only band I can think of from the 90s that got better with time. I'd argue the next 3 albums after White Pony are their most important.
Diamond Eyes might be my favorite album by them, but I truly do appreciate how good White Pony truly is.
You should try to reach out to him again. Honestly.
White Pony defined my teenage years & helped me survive high school with all it's pressures.
Easy "Deftones ft. Maynard - Passenger"
mjk is a blad babe
My favourite Deftones’ song.
i sometimes still get some chills when I listen to it... amazing vocal duo, big metal riffs, and abe's subtle but wicked drumming...
Also knife party
yeah, a masterpiece. it has somewhat strong Lynch - Kar wai vibes to it
I learned how to skateboard while listening to Around the Fur, so I love the heaviness of that album, there's a lot of memories in that one, but I immediately loved White Pony because I love melodic music. WP is melodic, and heavy, and to this day, because Tool and APC are my favorite bands, I absolutely loved Passenger. Digital Bath is the second best record on that album, and I'm so glad I got to live through those years as a teenager. I'm still... to this day, in love with White Pony
Check out Porcupine Tree, they have a great melodic edge as well.
@@shockomega Oh yeah, absolutely. I love Porcupine Tree. I forget about them from time to time, but I love everything I've heard from them
SO excited for this: one of my favorite bands covered by one of my favorite music essayists
Korea is easily my favorite track on White Pony, and it’s still one of my favorite albums of all time. I think only Diamond Eyes has come close to replicating it
That nod to Nothing at the end came out of nowhere. Such a great band.
Deftones is literally the perfect example of longevity , what a band. what a vibe
Never thought of deftones as nu metal. My favorite heavy band hands down
They're alt metal. Only first album is nu metal.
It definitely had that groovy, laid-back rhytmic style that Korn also had, for example.
@@veltmore1 True. Chino even rapped on a few tracks in the early days. Very happy they quickly started doing their own thing

Also: Rx Queen is my favorite song on White Pony.
This is an album that I can listen to from beginning to end with no skips. It’s so excellent. Feiticeira and Korea tie for favorite.
Passenger has to be my favorite track.
White Pony was the best thing that happened to me in my youth sonically. It gently grasped into a whole all my perceived aesthetics of that time.
I saw these guys back in 97. What a show! I still dig them. Thanks for the great, well deserved video man.
Trash Theory, please continue! These retrospective-type videos are a piece of art! I watch like a child for new videos on this channel.
Thanks!
Being a Tool fan, the song passenger really got be into Deftones. Great video!
My favorite Deftones on White Pony are "Rx Queen", "Street Carp", "Korea", and "Change..."
I was fan (and still) of White Pony since Day Zero it was released! But, that is my unhumbled opinion.
this is the album that’s had the most impact on me, just generally
thank you for the video, it was super cool!
Wow, you did an amazing job compiling alot of information that I didnt know and creating a little snapshot of the era. Really great work. Subbed.
This album was so ahead of its time.. I was 17 when it came out and had no idea how much it changed my life
I got this album for my 16th birthday that year... I've seen Deftones about 20 times since then, somehow met their crew and got to go to a bunch of shows in the 2010s (not as a groupie) and I have a white pony tattooed on my forearm... Even now as a conservative Christian mother of 4, Deftones will always be one of my first loves.
Good vid, would love to see you comment on how Kevin shields created an entirely new guitar sound and thus inspiring the whole shoegaze movement
I love your videos man. I learn things about bands I thought I knew everything about, you obviously research your subjects massively. Keep up the good work.
Oh, digital bath is my fave.
Great video, loved this album ever since release. I do recall friends losing favor of the band for not being as "hard" as previous records but me being a big fan of shoegaze loved it. Had a very dark, distant feeling my favorites had to be Passenger or Pink Maggit.
Thanks for this. Great job. I’ve grown with these guys as my soundtrack. This was a fun watch.
Fun fact: the girl who sings on "Knife Prty" made a movie called "The Bunny Game". No spoiling anything but it is genuinely the most Disturbing thing I've ever seen.
Not so fun fact: that same girl had a freak accident where she slipped inside a restaurant and hit her head leaving her in a vegitative state
Help me that’s a sad fact
@@Paranoid-loser From what I remember reading about it: She sustained a traumatic brain injury and damage to her upper spine from a fall where she landed on her head. The lasting effects being chronic pain centered from the injury and difficulty with balance, mobility, and doing normal activities. She's permanently disabled for sure, but she's still active on her social media accounts, so I wouldn't say she's in a vegetative state.
Damn that is sad such vocal talent.
@@jon00769 well that's good to hear but that still fuckin sucks
I saw them perform at a Southern California music festival in 1999; they absolutely rocked the stage and made the crowd go berserk. Excellent times, indeed.
My favorite band ever! I never grow tired of hearing all of their albums. Around the Fur being my favorite album from them since it was the first time I ever heard them. I can't wait to hear their new album when it drops!
Knife Prty is my favorite off of the album. Those screams from Rodleen near the end creeped me out.
Wow, didn't know it had a drug reference to the name in high school. Just thought it was a nice title and artsy aesthetic theme for an album.
wow, I feel so thankful for this! this is a amazing piece of work! I have been following Deftones' music for so long now! this was very insightful and inspiring. so thanks again! and thank you Deftones!
Always been a fan of passenger and digital bath. This is easily their best album ever even though they still put out good music and to this day.
"Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut" is the main thing behind every "atmosperic" song since BQAD
