"I accept you can get A to B, I just don't think you can get from A to Z" is the basic idea behind people who don't understand evolution
The sad part about this is that A to B is exactly the same as A to Z. The only difference is time, but the fundamental mechanics are exactly the same.
@@charliehands5266 that's a great answer and so obvious. The theists can't get around it. Evolution is a fact. We know this for a fact. It just deateoys their world view.
@wakingforbacon6439 the word "world view" always sounds so silly to me to get hung up on. When it literally means a view on the world, and views should change all the time.
It's like conservatives being afraid of any type of change so they get stuck trying to justify slavery and such
I am currently reading Dawkins' The Greatest Show on Earth and, as someone whose biology teachers gleefully skipped the sections on evolution as "just a theory", it's a lot to wrap your head around even if you DO accept it as true. There is a section about how bees and flowers have co-evolved, where a certain flower has two particular holes for the bee to enter and pollinate, and EVEN AS AN ATHEIST, I had this split second assumption of, "wow that sounds designed even though there is no logical reason to think it is." I have sympathy for anyone confused by the topic, especially if their teachers in school refused to teach it.
@blossom357 if you're interested in the evolution of symbiotic species, I'd suggest studying parasitic and invasive species. Super interesting.
There’s ignorance and then there’s willful ignorance, which is where most of America sits comfortably.
The caller genuinely appears to be totally ignorant of these subjects. That's a really sad indictment of education in the USA.
They're probably in religious schools that don't talk about it. I know that when I was religious, I went to all religious schools and I never heard about evolution. In fact, I asked about it once, honestly, and I was told in no uncertain terms that I was never to bring up that word ever again. That started me on the long path to deconversion because nobody tells me what not to think about.

It always amazes me to see how little people know. About anything. And then complain that something doesn’t make sense to them so it can’t be true.
The birds and dinosaur example is extra funny as birds are officially classified as dinosaurs making the connection between them rather direct.

He may as well said "how can a dinosaur turn into a dinosaur?"
The caller literally asks "can you have morals without G" then proceeds to outright say that morals aren't objective and are essentially individual opinions.
Sounds like you answered your own question, buddy.
Imagine growing up & no one ever telling you about god, but otherwise life is the same. Atheism is like that.
Morality is an evolutionary trait. And basic morality - like don’t hurt your friends, is demonstrated by toddlers. Most of the basics are the same around the world. Don’t lie, cheat, steal, or hurt others.
I think it's a little more complex than that. First probably came empathy, which led to individuals helping each other, which led to communities, which led to the need for ways of figuring out how to live together, which led to moral codes. Something like that.
So many people think these only apply to humans, that only people have morals. While explicit laws requiring language are probably only among humans, morality and empathy are common among many species. Differing moralities, just as there are differing moralities between groups of humans and between human individuals.
The adaptation the caller is speaking of is another word for evolution.
Whales adapted to the ocean. In very small steps.
Evolution is simply the change in inherited characteristics across generations.
Adaptation can be an example of evolution.

To add to that none of you will engage in live one on one debate. It would seem that you're not here to engage on a serious intellectual exchange, so it would further seem that you're here just for the attention. Again, I ask, do you just need a hug?

Some of them need a hug
Some of them need an education
And at least two need professional help 😁😁😁
Can a punch count as a hug?
The caller needs to read up on Ring Species.
Species as a concept is not as clear cut as a lot of people think.
The thing is... there is no "point" at which species a changes into species b anymore than there's a "point" at which a teen turns into an adult. It's gradual. Individuals of each group are less and less able to procreate with individuals from another group, and there comes a time they just can't at all anymore. But you can't point to a specific animal and say, ok, this is the one that's the new species now. The entire group was more and more the new species over multiple generations. At which point do you call it a new species? If less than one in a hundred pairings result in fertile offspring? One in thousand? One in a million? It's completely arbitrary and there's no practical way to keep track of it unless you somehow monitor every individual animal.
And that's using the sexual reproduction with fertile offspring definition of having different species. Sometimes a group of animals just gradually changes over time without being separated from another group and that cumulative change is enough that we humans think of them having become a new species even though there's never been a time when they couldn't reproduce. Plenty of species don't reproduce sexually at all, like all bacteria. They not only reproduce by basically just splitting in two where sometimes there's a mutation, they can also just give RNA or DNA to each other. With bacteria we decide on species by what characteristics a bacterium has, e.g. like what it does and doesn't consume.
Species is an arbitrary thing made up by humans. It's humans having to put a label onto something so it's easier to recognize. Nature doesn't play along with that. It doesn't have neat boxes with species a and b, it's just a big biological mess that keeps changing and doesn't have the clear boundaries that we want to use to slap a species label on things. Nature simply does NOT provide neat points at which one species has become another.
Humans have difficulty with becomings and beginnings. We want clear distinct stages that don't actually exist.
Recent way of thinking this, a species is a very small part of a single line of the evolutionary spectrum.
This might be my favourite conversation on these types of shows. Well done!
I can listen to conversation all day.
Having both hosts take turns tearing down the caller’s perspective is hard for me to watch. And constantly interrupting to establish definitions just halts the discussion. If you know what they’re getting at, work with them and try to help them see if their viewpoint is flawed.

poor kids, in their church they learned about the 'foundations of atheism' . how about the foundations of logic and your tribal mythology making no sense to grown ups?
To any theist sincerely wondering where atheists get their morality from: when you see someone harming others, do you think "God dislikes that, I should stop them", or do you want to stop them out of disgust towards the action and/or empathy towards the victims? Do you want to do things that will harm others and you decide not to do that because God tells you not to do that, or do you just not want to do those things?
If you feel no empathy and you want to harm others, and only religion is stopping you from doing that, that's scary, and I guess I'm glad you have something that's stopping you. But most people don't do harmful things because they have empathy and they don't want to harm others, and that's true across both theists and atheists. We get our morality from the same place; it's just that apologists are spreading the lie that morality can only come from God.
Where theists and atheists vary (between each other, and among themselves) is in how we try to make sense of those feelings we have, where they come from and whether or not we should listen to them. Theists appeal to questionable assertions about a being of questionable existence for that. Whereas humanist atheists appeal to harm reduction and ideals of the world we want to live in. The thinking of theists lends itself more to everyone going off into their own corner of what they believe God wants (and there are many such corners), whereas humanism and consequentialism are things we can discuss, we can justify our positions, and we can come to some common agreement about what's best.
19:00 Where does morality come from? Certainly not Bible God, who is far beneath what I consider to be a moral being.

"Change in kind" depends on how "kind" is defined. Given that classification is based on differences, defining kind by the various classification labels essentially means defining based on the amount of changes from a common ancestor. The evolution questions are literally as simple to demonstrate as they are to just basically explain.
"When do we get from A to B?" - gradually. Each successive generation from A to B looks less like A and more like B. Eventually, after numerous generations, the offspring in almost no way resembles A, and almost entirely resembles B, and in the next generation, we stop and call it B.
That's the entire concept of evolution wrapped up. The whole 'micro but not macro' argument is basically saying we can get from A to B, B to C, C to D, D to E, but we can't get from A to E - You already acknowledged that we can, and literally 100% of the evidence that exists regarding lifeforms and fossils confirms this to be the case. Evolution is literally batting 1.000, how this escapes some people is beyond me.
Another important thing to understand is that species is kind of a fuzzy concept anyway.
A can reproduce with B, would make infertile offspring with C, and can't reproduce with D or E, while B can reproduce with both A and C, would make infertile offspring with D, and can't reproduce with E, etc. There's not a hard cutoff between one species and the next.
Adaptation is evolution...
Next they need a lesson in the evolution of their religion
God punished Adam and Eve, and all of their descendants, and all of mankind, because they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. So, apparently, God did not want mankind to know good from bad, right from wrong. So, why do you look to that God for your morality? How can you “learn” morality from someone who didn’t want you to know right from wrong? (and was a pi$$-poor example of morality himself?)

My older "brother" was a poodle that my mother had 6 1/2 years before me.
The breeder of my brother had been dissatisfied with the few colours poodles had back then (say 1930s -1950s) and wanted to produce new colours.
To find that out quikly, (and you get only 2 litters/year with dogs), he first experimented with fast-reproducing mice, and how their fur colours are inherited and mix with each other.
He worked out a system how that works, he started to repeat that with his poodles.
Not too long before my barking brother hit this world in 1957 was the time that the new variants had been "stabilized" and were forming a new "style" called "Deutsche Neufarbenzucht" (german new colour breed - very inventive).
As he also disliked the weird hairdo that was called "Standard Cut", he developed a new cut with Heinz Thum, and called it "Karakul Cut", because poodles had curly hair as Karakul sheep- The cut was more meant to emphasize the body features of the dog like the "sculpture" of the standard cut.
The new variant was massively opposed by the traditionalists.
While usually you find ANYthing in Google, it seems that this variant has been practically purged from public perception.
Just so you have something to grin, Germany's most known prostutue, Rosemarie Nitribitt, had one of these poodles. You can find a picture of her with the dog beside her Mercedes Cabrio (and some more "interesting ones. .

I think the crux of most people with this misunderstanding of evolution is that speciation isn't happening at the level of individuals. It's happening with large populations over vast periods of time. But mutations are still required to generate those traits we are looking for. 14:15 Dog A and Dog B, that reminds me.... what was the names of Adam and Eves grandchildren's grandparents? Name all 4.
Whenever someone asks me, “if we are descended from apes, why are there still apes?” I ask them, “If dogs are descended from wolves, why are there still wolves?” Sometimes it makes them think (Sometimes!). And if these descendants can create so much variety in just a few thousand years through artificial selection, imagine what natural selection can accomplish in millions of years!
The best reply I've ever read was
"If we descend from dirt why is there still dirt?"
@@joshsheridan9511 I use that when the godlings piss me off.
Dogs even evolve from modern Wolves who they can actually still breed with as they are technically the same species.
A better example would be foxes that also evolved for ancient wolves.

Animal breeders are cruel to animals!
The idea of a spirit with infinite wisdom appears to some as a contradiction (for instance, a perfect deity creating a human with free will who choses to be imperfect, or an all loving god who will eternally burn my sweet and kind mother because she is agnostic ) which renders the need of "evidence" or "proof" meaningless, since the existence of a belief which contradicts itself cannot materialize to begin with. There is nothing there to authenticate.
God might be a dogma for some, and the perception of a contradiction might be a brute fact for others.
Morality is a social construct and there are very few black and white situations.
Blue eyes are a mutation.
I like purple, and you? ...I'm agnostic on that color....
why are you reuploading old content?
because they fell off
so about mutations, I am a microbiologist who used to work with mutations but won't call myself an expert. mutations in bacteria and viruses need to happen to diversify.
and even mutations in bacteria do not neccesarilly become useable but it may be there in the population by chance, and yes actually by chance and then one of those has another more common mutation that out of nowhere works together with earlier mutations and would then produce a more efficient organism.
the difference is that bacteria have a very quick rate of doubling themselves while animals don't, but let's say it takes 1.000.000 generation for such a change for most animals 1.000.000 generations is only 5.000.000 years for an animal that can get offspring within 5 years. so within 5.000.000 years a normal rat could evolve through an actual mutation.
this is just my take from my basic understanding, I could be wrong though.
We could all have a different moral stance. OK, let’s get together and find out what we agree on. Or, at least, what most of us agree on. Maybe we could write that down, and call it a set of laws. And maybe, over time, we realise we’ve got some things wrong, like making slavery legal, so we change those laws through some process. Sounds almost like a workable system. Better, anyway, than taking a book written by unknown people, that’s full of contradictions, and say “that’s our laws”.
These callers need to learn science.
There's a fantastic TH-cam video out there somewhere of a labrador and a little pig. The pig is resting in its box and the owner is with the labrador. The owner takes a sausage and cuts it into one small bit an inch long and a big bit about five inches long. The labrador picks up the large bit and carries it to his pig friend and then comes back and eats the tiny bit itself. I concede it would be difficult to prove whether the dog could even appreciate the difference between the big and small bit or whether it was being generous and moral. Repeating the experiment many times would help. I'm pretty sure my cat can't tell the difference between a full bowl of food and a bit of food. When he's hungry he meows at me but he seems equally happy regardless of the amount I put in the bowl. It's just he stays hungry if it was only a little bit of food and continues to meow at me.
So, a dog is feeding a pig a pork product?
It's kind of problematic to be trying to feed sausages to any pig in the first place. Pigs are known to be complete scavengers who will eat almost anything, they are also deeply emotional and empathetic creatures and would never actively hunt their own kind. So unethical giving a pig pork products to eat
Am I crazy, I know this is an old episode but why is she making the distinction with mutations isn't all those changes because of mutations in genes? Also the way she phrased mutations as almost exclusively bad? Am I missing something in regards to evolution? Or is this just old and I understand that she's not an expert but I'm just confused by her explanation? TBC I accept evolution as true because of the overwhelming evidence I just thought I remembered that minute detail being different than how she outlined it.
sexual reproduction combines traits from both parents to create new variations. children are not clones of their parents.
@@DavidMichaelKalman I understand that, she talked about mutations as though it was seperate and almost rare? Also the phrasing made it sound as though mutations are mostly bad. I had thought mutations are frequent and integral part of the process?
The odd/even analogy is pretty bad because that makes them think that they're 50/50, a specific number would be more accurate, religion is like saying there are exactly 151756366 balls

What evolution have with god
Nothing. That's what scares my fellow theists who think a god interferes with it
But you can breed your dog to be little big fat small and you can keep on breeding for millions of years and you will still only have a dog
No, likely you won’t. We bred low mean follow distance (friendly) wolves for hundreds of years and ended up with dogs.
No. Depending on what selection pressure that you put, the population that you have would have drifted far enough genetically to be a different species by then. It might still be a Canis lupus familiaris. It might or might not be even in the same genus.
Oops. Sorry. I responded to you as if you would be aware of what taxonomy is and how genetics would work. Here's an answer you might understand: "You are wrong."
All Dogs come from wolves.
So youre off the mark from the start. Well before the start even.
They're playing softball with these guys.
Evolution is a proven fact of population diversity and genetics.
To say otherwise is misinformed.
As a "theory", evolution is as solidly proven and known in the lab and in the field in nature, as are the theories of electromagnetism and atomics, and it's better known than gravitation (which is also a theory).
Don't say that we told anyone to poke metal objects into an electrical outlet or jump from a high place.
We are atheists because no supposed proof for god(s) stands.
I for one am no more agnostic about YHWH/Allah than I am about leprechauns.
Without using theology or scripture or personal subjective experiences or feelings, can anyone show why "I Am That I Am" of the goat herder's burning bush is deserving of any more credence than leprechauns?
If to remain reasonable, we must be agnostic about god(s), then you *_MUST_* also be agnostic about fairies and all the ~4000 other gods out there, and the monsters under a child's bed that disappears when an adult enters the room.
It is impossible to be ethical under the reward/punishment system of theism.
Everything is about seeking a reward and avoiding the punishment, which is purely selfish.
The atheist who does good for their own self worth is also seeking benefit, but I'd trust that more than someone who cherry picks from a barbaric bronze age myth that can't even prohibit slavery and encourages slaughtering people of other beliefs.
Is it possible to learn English without God ?
They need to talk less so I can enjoy the callers stupidity 😅
The one gripe I have with these atheist shows is that I think they're really bad at explaining where morality and law come from. Its really easy to show that behaviour inform morality and not the other way around. The bible itself emulates the morality of the time that is derived from the behaviour of society of the time. Life in an organized society demands moral behavior, over what is best for the individual. When humans start to live in groups they realize that if they kill each other, the next time another tribe comes to attack them, they will have one less person to defend them, therefore "thou shalt not murder". And from thereon, it's easy to see how these groups; once they can communicate with each other; inform the desire to enforce these moral behaviours, and create laws, with consequences for its disobedience to enforce it. And if you study law history you can see how law and what is considered moral changes over time as we discuss more of these ideas and come to the realization of what is positive in protecting certain rights etc, and how the preservation of society takes the place of natural survival instincts of the individual.
Like I really don't see the need of going in circles talking about animals and stuff when we live in a perfectly explainable society, to try and argue that moral is something natural, when it clearly isn't, and 100% not absolute like theists want to claim. That is why in every conceivable imagination of a collapse of society, morals are the first thing to go out the window and individual survival instincts kick in.

Further, how can your God be real if you are forced to lie for him?
Ben, "There's some atheists who believe some weird stuff" ... RIGHT!!! Such as believing God doesn't exist when an ordered universe and finely tuned cosmological constants loudly proclaim he does. Earth is flourishing with life, and it's not elsewhere in the universe we know of. Human beings aren't smart enough to create life. Evolution requires both direction, and abiogenesis, to succeed.
"Finely tuned"? So the entirely universe was fine tuned for you to be able to make these nonsensical posts?
And you can't show that the universe would be any different.
There is no evidence that the constants are finely tuned, and the universe certainly isn't ordered.
