      Can you use the lantern soft box in a bigger setting for like lighting up a group of people around a table? Or should I be using more of a directional soft box?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gregory. It all depends on the look you’re going for to be honest. There’s no reason why you can’t. It spreads more light around in all directions where as the softboxes are a little more directional.

      Funny this pops up, as I just received my package with a 60W light and the latern diffuser. Bought the kit specifically for that lantern. I used it a few days ago filming an actor's audition and was really impressed with the softness of the light, but at the same time I can see the virtues of the more directional diffuser. I'm shopping now for a 26" (66 cm) grid octagon and a 14" x 36" (36 cm x 90 cm) rectangular diffuser for different applications.
      I guess in short, love the lantern but it depends on how I need to shape the light in certain shots.

    Thank you soooooo much for the patience in showing how to put these together and the detailed light comparison. The lantern is exactly what I need for larger soft even lighting to supplement photograph artwork vs. one sided lighting for creative portraits.

    The lantern would be great for a podcast situation with two people facing each other with a table in between. It would then be placed between them as an overhanging and slightly back for better shadow on the opposite side of the face. Remember: you can get "skirts" for lanterns that make them much more directional. You can easily make a "skirt" yourself. That way, you can have the best of both worlds in one solution.

    Hang the dome vertically for the 360 spread and proper performance. Imagine it is a fixture attached to your ceiling. I think you will be able to move it further away then also. I have one and it is a wonderful light dispersal tool. If you have the ceiling height.

    I think this is perfect for top down dinning or interview round table shots, what I'm more interested in is using this to bring up the base exposure of the room when you have to use ND to control a window, those are always trick and hard not to make artificial.
    Can't decide on a 26 or 32 though

    I think it really depends on the situation. If I'm doing an interview type video...the lantern would probably be best. But when it's just a vlog...I think having more control over the light with the Parabolic is better. HOWEVER...I know that some lantern soft boxes come with "flaps" to help control the light...I'd be interested to see the controllability with those vs the Parabolic.

      Not quite. That would give a slightly different look and possibly not as soft behind the source. Also this allows you to mount to a Bowen’s mount light. Thanks for watching 🤩🎥🙏🏻

    which one gives more light on objects?

    • @SamHolland
      @SamHolland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The lantern will brighten up more of the room but the parabolic will be more direct. The actual brightness depends on the light you put on it 🎥 I hope this helps.

  • @jambononi
    @jambononi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I suppose I prefer the light dome directional, but there are a lot of situations where you want the whole room brighter, and use directional lighting can create so much contrast you end up needing 5 lights to make the room look normal again. So this might be a good solution to non stylised looks.

      probably very late to this one but I love em. the 60X isnt as powerful (obviously its splitting duty) and if you go with gels your best bet is always to go straight for the punch. throw a CTO on it and you've got a warm lamp

      If you have the Godox RC-A6 remote, set your light to Channel 1 and Group a, then set your remote to the same. You’ll then be able to use the remote. This is so you can control multiple lights with one remote. Hope that works 🙏🏻

    Soft light everywhere isn't natural in my opinion. Natural light is the sun, which is harsh, not soft, and doesn't fill a room. There are usually rays and shadows. And even if you soften it, it's still directional due to windows.

    • @bonnevillebagger9147
      @bonnevillebagger9147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clouds and haze create natural soft light. Also foliage.

  • @misterscary999
    @misterscary999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I guess it depends on what your intended use is, but I much prefer the lighting from the regular parabolic. More interesting, more dramatic, more cinematic looking. The lantern seems to throw light everywhere - I'd love to see a comparison against the lantern and a white shoot thru umbrella. To my eyeballs the lantern gives flat, uninteresting, bland, ho-hum lighting.

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's what it's meant to do. This isn't a modifier meant for controlling light.

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misterscary999 I saw that video already. Within the first minute of that video Daniel put a "mask" on it (what is also referred to as a "skirt") to control the light spill because he said "why waste all that light." A lot of Lantern softboxes do NOT come with these masks/skirts and in fact put out a 270° to an almost 360° light spread. THIS particular one Sam has does not have a skirt and Sam says it effects a 270° spread and he showed it quite clearly in this video. You plainly see the room light up a whole lot more, raising the general brightness of the entire room, with the Lantern softbox. So this particular Lantern is NOT mean to control light in any effective way whatsoever.
