"It was all for testing purposes". It's okay Gerald, that's what I tell myself too when I spend waaaay too much money on overkill equipment that I'll never use to it's full potential hahaha

There's a certain usefullness to seeing people going over board. Type "this is how you can do it if you really want to" and then try to make at least an approximation.

"So," [pulls out massive color accuracy chart] "this is just for fun, for the nerds out there."
This implies that watching a 24 minute video on a lighting set up with a technical breakdown of the equipment involved, doesn't automatically qualify you as a nerd. This is the perspective you have when you sit comfortably atop the nerd hierarchy.

Every so often I think I'm weird for finding these things so interesting while everybody makes fun of me or suffers my monologues about the latest and greatest videography fact I found out about. Then I see the TH-cam notification, I click on it and understand that I probably am a bit of an odd duck, but I'm not alone. Thanks, Gerald, and thanks, commentators! We might look odd in somebody else's eyes, but boy do we love what we do! Keep getting technical, keep being a videography nerd, and keep inspiring us to get better! For what we are is just a big weird family of videographers! Great video!

Do you remember recovering old video tapes? We would end up with a box of beta tapes after a while, that editors would use to build segments and drop into bigger pieces, or contained spots that were out of date. You could make those work tapes “fresh” by hovering this big magnet over the top of them. Supposedly, the magnetic indicators on a tape would be pulled in one direction, in essence “erasing” everything on it and setting it to factory.
We were told not to get this device near any computers, because it would mess up drives.
Watching this video made me think of those days, when you put that powerful magnet on your camera and glued it to your cabinet. It made me wonder if the strength of a strong magnet, like the gadget we used on the tapes, might have some weird affect on the camera electronics, and for sure on the camera storage cards.
    What do you think?

Awesome video and great timing as we're planning on redoing our studio lighting in the new year. One thing I figured out re: studio mode is if you buy some wifi plugs off amazon (the kind that plug into a socket and then you plug the light into the wifi plug and you can switch it using any home automation app) then if the power goes out and comes back on the wifi plugs will default to off. Then you can run your lights in studio mode without worrying. Also I have the wifi plugs set to a voice command so I can turn on the studio lights from anywhere in the room even while my hands are busy setting stuff up.

I lately bought some mid entry lights from Jinbei, a 300 and 60 with some modifiers, they're cool to start experimenting with filming (xt4 rig and xpro3) but the fan noise is driving me crazy. I think I'm gonna tear them up and mod the fans with "silent" PC fans.

What a fantastic video Gerald! I was looking to automate as many things in the studio as possible, and this video came up. A small tip I do to avoid forgetting things: I have a stream deck with all the apps I need to use in order, for example 1 button opens the mic gain app, 1 button opens the Sidus link app (you can actually download the iPhone app on a mac) etc. They are in order and I just open them one by one which sets the studio to rec mode.

I had the same problem with the VL300 that many others had where it would overheat after a minute, the fans would then kick in, but the light went out... until it cooled off enough then the light came back on, fans shut off... repeat. After ONE use. Returned it to B&H and got the Aputure C300d Mark II.

Us old timers laughing at the new guys being wowed by silent lights. :) Yea, tungsten is hot and inconvenient, but dead silent with no plus/minus green and perfect SSI! I also love my Godox US150s as they have no fans and mix in nicely with my tungsten lights (when you gel them). Great stuff.
Also, I had a thought watching this. The lights in my home are all voice controlled. Using Google but could use other systems. This would let you voice control the studio (turn on all the lights, turn off the hair light, etc.), and give the added benefit of being able to have full control of what outlets are on or off from anywhere in the world you have Wi-fi or cell service. Would be cool to have the lights turn on 5 minutes before you arrive so everything is warmed up and up to temperature by the time you walk in the door.

If price is an issue, Amaran lights are fantastic. I’ve never owned an Aputure light so I can’t speak to the build quality, but their “lesser” brand is also well built. Of course they all work with the Siduslink App so you have the same levels of management.

Subjective but I think it looks a lot better with the fill light off, the light is going everywhere and lighting up the bg a lot, killing nice contrast. I put my studio on a couple of smart plugs, they also give me a nice report on power draw and automatically cut the power when I leave the studio building.
I also taped a SwitchBot robot to my Godox ML60 lights to automate switching those on by talking to Siri, as frustratingly those lights require physically pressing a button on the back after a power cut.

This video reminds me of camera shading a truck for ESPN and how I had 20 minutes, whatever shitty lighting the arena had, alot of super green SD and Clean HD lenses mixed in with POV cameras and standard camcorders to match perfectly. With no cards or anything just my scopes and the shading boxes. Moral of the story, with a proper monitor and enough training you can eyeball anything to within a margin of error.
    Good times, sure miss it.

The problem with the 600c Pro is that it has significantly reduced light output when compared to the 600d Pro and also the 600x. I'd rather use some +/- green gel if it was absolutely necessary (unless I need RGB).
The level that you're going for colour accuracy is also really overkill. I can tell you as someone who works on set every day that most productions don't get this nit-picky; the green/magenta shift has to be super obvious for something to be done.

hey gerald i have a simple thing to ask camera manufacturers and i have no idea how to reach that to their table. you are one person who can understand and take it to them and moreover your channel has the influence to reach both followers and manufacturers and you are one youtuber responds to comments promptly as far as i know.
“WHY CANT CAMERA MANUFACTURERS MAKE A CAMERA JUST FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. NO 6K/8K, NO HEAT MANAGEMENT, NO 10/12BIT FOR VIDEO”
I’m a photographer who never took any video with my camera. why i need all these to add so much weight. extra menu and most of all the money. why i should pay so much for the technology i will never use.
i think there will be so many photographers who never use their camera for video. why can’t they make a good high resolution evf, display, advanced sensor, processor, autofocus for a 2k$ instead of trying to fit everything in a so called hybrid package?
a good camera just for photography.
