Wolverine was very well popular long before the movies. Putting him on the cover alone would boost the sales of any comic that had him, regardless of how many pages he was in them. It became a running gag.
I considered him pretty popular back in the 90s when he had his own comic. The best part of Wolverine is he’s physically almost indestructible but mentally he’s endured several terrible lifetimes of trauma and that’s something he’ll never shake. It makes him complex and unresolved. The mystery and layers of his origin only add to this depth.

Chris Claremont created or wrote and upgraded so many existing (including Wolverine) characters into multi-dimensional characters within a team dynamic in such a unique way that that 15 year run with those characters and stories have yet IMO has never been repeated.
I purchased the 4 issue limited series from the shelves when they originally released in the 80’s and since around then. Wolverine was always the main character and the most popular X-man. He was the only character the live action had to get right
Wolverine’s popularity most definitely is what helped the X-men films profit. I’ve noticed that the films that DON’T have Wolverine in them didn’t do so well in the box office.
I reading X-Men and every page they apear since 1975 and what I notice is the Wolverine we are used to was gradually built. Even his powers were introduced one at a time, with the healing factor being the latest to be mentioned. Until 1985, the protagonist of X-Men is Kitty Pryde or Storm or both.
Wolverine is the coolest comic character ever, Hes the Fonzie of the marvel universe, dude ticks all the boxes that almost no other character does Bad attitude, Dangerous reputation, Tough (but cares), Curses, Leather jacket, Motorbike, Loner, 5 o clock shadow, Drinks and smokes (no one does this any more) and sometimes wears an eye patch - Everything about the dude just radiates cool.
Apparently history is "Headcannon" as well. Wolverine has almost always been one of the most popular X-man, probably even before the 92 animated show. In 88, they started his on-going comic book series and the Toy Biz line had more variants of his figure than any other.

I had a folder with a certificate of some kind from like 2nd grade I wrote my full name and right after it “Wolverine”. I’m keeping that forever as my nerd cred right out of 1992. I’m making up for nonexistent merch at the time. Now I have Deadpool pj’s and everything I wanted back then.
I really thought he was the most popular in the early 90's . Enough for me to get that Wolverine III figure with the springing claws as my first one .
Hugh Jackman made it so that instead of the actor looking like the character, the character had to look like the actor.
Since Hugh Jackman's success, every Wolverine has to look like him.
I'm glad for that, he has become a living Legend just like Freddie Mercury.
To this day, when i here X-MEN i imagine wolverine
a Secondary character and a third tier character became everyone’s favourite because of the dedication of the 2 actor who played them.Hugh and Ryan really deserve respect
deadpool maybe was a b grade hero but not Logan. He was the most popular x men even before the movies.....
Top 5 most iconic superhero of present day
Spider-man
Batman
Iron Man
Superman
Wolverine
Idk why tf people still keep superman in the list despite having mid movies and comics and literally no solo games, definitely not a single iconic actor( I respect those actors but none of them can be called iconic).
I think the surge of deadpool fans and recent amazing movies and awesome game and popularity increase cements him as a modern marvel legend

When we talk about 'iconic' superheroes, it's important to look at the bigger picture. Deadpool is fantastic-he's had some really fun games, incredible comics, and have the best superhero comedies ever made. But when you think about how many superhero fans would actually name Deadpool as their favorite superhero of all time, I don't think that number is as big compared to other heroes.
On the other hand, Superman’s fanbase always makes me wonder why they still stick with him. Aside from Man of Steel, most Superman movies are worse than even the worst modern superhero films.
its popularity not iconicity hulk used ahead of ironman but ironman thanks mcu has eclipsed him.
@@harryrao4296 Hulk used to be at top but coz universal didn't make a hulk movie for almost 15 years and no major TV series, games or tv shows kinda make him fall behind in iconic.
Immortal Hulk still goes super hard though. Hope MCU get back the rights of Hulk.
@@harryrao4296 popularity play a major role in making a character iconic.
Iconic characters depends most on their fanbase & current impact on the industry.
A oversimplification would be if u go around and ask people which is their most fav superhero.
X Men the Animated Series was my introduction to the X-Men as a kid. Im so glad it portrayed the characters correctly because it gave a great foundation and a life long love of the X-Men
I like to think there’s an alternate universe where Cyclops is everyone’s favorite even though Wolverine’s really the heart of the team. We have
X-Men Origins: Cyclops
The Cyclops
Summers
And even Deadpool and Cyclops
Wolverine is my favorite x-men but i also love cyclops and think he's actually the most important x-men character. he's the superman to the x-mens justice league. ironically both Marvel and DC had their resident dark bad boys in Batman and Wolverine over take their boy scout team leaders in Cyclops and Superman in popularity. and least with Avengers i never felt like one guy over took the whole team cap, iron man, thor are all pretty relative in popularity.
3:03 From what comic that frame is ?
Don't Read My Name
Chris Claremont created or wrote and upgraded so many existing (including Wolverine) characters into multi-dimensional characters within a team dynamic in such a unique way that that 15 year run with those characters and stories have yet IMO has never been repeated.
I might honestly prefer him over Spider-Man..wish I have more comics to read.
don't forget my boi quicksilver since he has the 2 best parts of 2 x men movies
I purchased the 4 issue limited series from the shelves when they originally released in the 80’s and since around then. Wolverine was always the main character and the most popular X-man.
He was the only character the live action had to get right
Hugh and team literally brought life into the character.
Wolverine was never chubby. He was like a short body builder.
No other X-MEN character has ever been able to sustain a solo comic.
A true legend. As well as D&W is a truly amazing movie. A must watch for all imo.
Wolverine is the coolest comic character ever, Hes the Fonzie of the marvel universe, dude ticks all the boxes that almost no other character does
Bad attitude, Dangerous reputation, Tough (but cares), Curses, Leather jacket, Motorbike, Loner, 5 o clock shadow, Drinks and smokes (no one does this any more) and sometimes wears an eye patch - Everything about the dude just radiates cool.
until hes 90!
Apparently history is "Headcannon" as well. Wolverine has almost always been one of the most popular X-man, probably even before the 92 animated show. In 88, they started his on-going comic book series and the Toy Biz line had more variants of his figure than any other.
Wolverine wasn't just popular Xmen ... he was THE Xmen
Wolverine is THE X- Man
I could be wrong but I could've sworn that Wolverine was really popular before the live action movies. He seemed the most iconic to me when I was a kid in the 90s
If hes still alive until 100, he plays wolverine until he DIES. Hugh Jackman is the GOAT.
I like Logan the most in Deadpool and Wolverine, Days of Future Past, and X-Men Evolution
The first time I watched X-Men was in my native language. Never heard about them prior to that 90th cartoon. And after two episodes I gave the VHS to one of my friends. And said I liked the guy with yellow suit and the claws the most.
A few days later my friend returned me the VHS and said yeah I like him the best too.
I guess there is something in Wolverine that makes people like him, even without any media influence.
i used to call wolverine “the x-man”
Because he was always more than just an X-Men, that's why. He's been everywhere.
He's just cool. I was instantly drawn to the character as a young comic reader in the 80's.
Wolverine was the most popular in the original xmen animated series. Bro said with confidence "thats what didn't happen" Brother I lived in that Era. Wolverine was on all the xmen shirts he was always featured in all the videogames. His toys sold the most at toy stores. He had his own spinoff comic which sold better than other xmen spinoff comics. Hugh was big part of making popular but it was the 92 series that elevated the character of Wolverine. Bro is flat out lying.
Spiderman, Batman, and Superman all could and have had flops but still returned with other solo films. Hulk technically did, too.
