GREATEST Overland Trail in the World? | EP14

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- Episode 14 - While most travelers come to Tajikistan to drive the Pamir Highway - the second-highest highway in the world - we may have just discovered an overlanding trail that rivals some of the best on the planet. It’s wild, remote, and feels frozen in time.
Known for its epic landscapes and isolated villages, the Bartang Valley is also notorious for its dangers - landslides, unpredictable rivers, and elevations above 4000 meters. This hidden gem of the Pamirs is not for the faint of heart, but for those who crave adventure, it’s an experience like no other. This is one adventure you don’t want to miss!
Please note: This trail can be very dangerous and could easily be one of the hardest trails in the world if conditions are not in your favour. Approach with caution and be fully prepared.
If you'd like to know more about us, Project Wild Earth, and how this all came about, click here: projectwildear... For our journey, we are driving Jane, our INEOS Grenadier, and live in a Patriot X3 Trailer so we can travel off-road to remote locations and be off-grid for long periods of time.
Thank you for coming along on our journey!

We know it’s not for everybody but we’re glad you’re able to come along for the ride! 😎 Thanks so much for sharing and helping to spread the word, it means lot! 🙏
After money, you need courage to go for such trips
@@Seekay92 That’s fair to say. There’s many layers to fully committing to something like this. 👍
Loved your video. Spent few weeks in Tajikistan five years ago. Had much the same experience with shepherds in ancient stone huts offering us a place to sleep and fresh warm bread. As parents you are so doing the right thing for you and your children’s education. And documenting your journeys with very well done video just seals the vote for me. Somebody hand them the “Worlds Greatest Parents” trophy please. Safe travels, ❤Michael
@@mikie47 Hi Michael! Thanks so much for your kind words, they made us smile! We’re just doing what we feel is right, for us, at this time in our lives. We’re glad you enjoyed watching the video! Hope you come along for the rest of the journey! 🙂
Wow, what an incredible place. The quality of your filming, editing and storytelling is just excellent.
Love it!
Not many places like it on Earth that’s for sure! Thanks so much for your kind words Johno! 🙏 Let’s hope others think so too! 😂
I just had your video suggested in my feed. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve watched an overland video that was a half hour long and I hadn’t felt the urge to fast forward at all. It was great storytelling conveying the beauty of the unique locations, challenges, meeting locals, and your inner conflicts through the camera. 👏🏼
This made us laugh a LOT, thank you! 😂
We really try to respect people’s time when making these videos but at the same time, we want to make sure we bring people along for the ride! We thought about cutting it down but decided to stick with it and tell the story. We’re learning all the time and hope each video is an improvement on the last.
Thank you so much for your kind words, they really do mean a lot. We put a lot of effort into making these videos and it’s challenging doing them while on the road, in these locations, with two young kids, but despite all this, we still want to do the best we can! 🙏
Just stunning landscape and stunning family. Your kids are the richest children on planet earth. Again great story telling. We love you ❤
@ Thanks so much Pat! We love you too! Thanks so much for being such an avid supporter of what we’re doing. Glad you enjoyed this one! Hope you had a great Christmas with your family! 🎅 🎄🍻🍷🥂

@ Glad the algorithm is working its magic Craig and that you’re enjoying our little trip! Plenty more to come including a full walk round. 😊
Subbed! You will be the next million sub channel soon. This video was lovely! I really appreciated the focus on the adventure and not the usual things the other channels seem to think we want to see more of (3 minutes of coffee making every morning...not!) Though setting up camp and all that jazz is nice to see once, I would rather you fill the time with all the wonder and joy of the trip. I couldn't help mumbling to myself how lucky those children do not yet know they are! They will forever have a piece of that country in them forever.
@@DavidAlanReece Thanks so much for your kind words, David! We really appreciate you taking the time to write them. Reaching a million subscribers is a big milestone, especially since we’re still pretty new to this, but we’re onboard and excited!
We’re so glad you enjoyed the video, and it’s great to hear your thoughts. This is all great feedback from our perspective. Matt doesn’t drink coffee, so we can’t focus on that! 😂 We’re definitely on the same page about what we want to put out there. Once you’ve seen something once or twice, you’ve seen it-no need to labour the point.
As for our kids, the Bartang Valley in Tajikistan is unbelievable, and we can only hope that even a small slice of it stays with them. The life and soul in the eyes and smiles of the people will always stay with us. Our plan is that this little journey will help form the foundation of who our children will become and, hopefully, set them up for the big wide world!
Great storytelling, and an example to follow for families. Go out, explore, take you children with you! ❤❤😁😁
Thanks so much for your kind words, we appreciate it! 😊We know not all families are the same and everyone has their own priorities, based on their situation, but for us, this is works! 😊
This is truely the real deal when it comes to overlanding 💪🏻🤘🏻😊
Thanks so much! We're glad you're enjoying following along on our little adventure! We try our best to keep it real. We have some pretty epic plans over the next few years so hope you can come along for the ride!

This
Thanks so much for the input. We will try our best to take you along for the ride but we have to draw a line somewhere in terms of filming all the time and actually enjoying the experience and being present.
If we do anything particularly interesting or of note we’ll try to include it but it’s more about boundaries and balance for us. We’ll do a few more vehicle specific videos when we get to Mongolia. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. We’ve serviced the vehicle on schedule in Sofia, Bulgaria and Almaty, Kazakhstan so far.
Admin and paperwork. It’s whatever anyone doing a trip like this has to do. We have the slight added complication of U.K. and US nationalities to consider but it’s all good. We also have to do four application each time which is time consuming but necessary. It sometimes gets a bit much when we have to plan so far ahead and get everything lined up because you can’t get visas in certain countries etc but you learn to navigate that over the years and just be on top of things. Things are always changing too in terms our route decisions and geopolitics. We’re planning on doing a year on the road video and so we’ll include a bit more of the practicalities of how we actually do it in there. Eg Route decisions - China vs Afghanistan 👍
Cities and towns, again, if they’re of note, we’ll include, if not we want to focus on the wilder areas of our beautiful planet, after all, this is what it’s all about. Showing people how beautiful this rock is we all live on and then planting a few seeds amongst us all to remind us that we can all do our little bit. 🌍
We hope that helps but we’ll take your suggestion on board and include wherever we can. 🙏
Just to add a little more to our answer. If you follow along here instagram.com/projectwildearth/ we include more details you maybe interested in. 👍
Why not take a camera crew with you 😂

Once a sailor always a sailor, if there is one translatable skill that being a mariner brings you it’s understanding the weather.
I always enjoy the meteorological explanations on here. More, more! Maybe that’s just because I was once a sailor too, but it’s also because these things are so completely useful to understand anywhere on earth that I like to hear it.
Kids shouting ‘cumulonimbus’ from the back seat is the mark of an education as full of life lessons as any nursery rhyme could ever be.
Safe journey guys. Your videos are always worth the wait. Beautiful scenery beautifully captured by an amazing crew.
@@VISTATREKKER😂😂👍
Once you’ve learned about weather and how it all works, it becomes a very useful skill to have. You can’t help but look up every now and again and start piecing things together.
Living in the wild requires various skill sets. One of which is understanding the weather, especially when sleeping under canvas each night with a young family! 😂 Matt comes from an aviation and military background and he’s spent a lot of time in the outdoors and so knows how to read the weather pretty well. Saying that, weather in the mountains and certain microclimates can be extremely unpredictable as you saw in the last video. 😬
We’re glad you enjoy our little explanations, we’ll try and remember that for future videos if we thinks it’s relevant. Ultimately, it’s a great foundational skill to have, especially when you’re doing anything in the outdoors, in the sky or on the water. Weather can change everything at the drop of the hat and if you’re not prepared, you can easily find yourself in a dire situation.
@ I worked 10 years at Sea and double that flying too so I knew enough to know Matt knew his weather alright, but I’m dreaming of a few years on a trail somewhere if I can shoe horn it into the way ahead somehow. I can’t keep throwing decades at lesser projects or I’ll run out of decades 😁
Watching your videos sure helps the shoe horn with its work. Happy Christmas to you all.

@@Defland Thanks so much for understanding the reality of what it takes to do this. It’s not easy that’s for sure but there’s a lot of support from our TH-cam community which is great and very much appreciated. 🙏
Each episode seems to have its own identity. We just go with what feels right and what footage we have to be honest. They seem to just evolve in their own natural way to what you see. There’s obviously a lot more we’d like to do but we have to operate within the constraints we have. Our kids being our first priority followed closely but some sort of balance.. although that never actually happens. The balance bit. 😂
We wish you a very Happy Christmas and New Year with your family! Take care and hopefully see you in the New Year as more videos are released! 🥂🎄

This is one of the finest overlanding channel I have been too. lovely family and great journey. I would love to do this one day for sure. Thanks to you guys. One thing I would like to know, how you are going to manage to afford this kind of a journey for 5 year... what is your source of income? coz this is not possible working 9 to 5. Thank you and wish luck for your ongoing adventures.
Thanks for the kind comment, we’re glad you like our channel! There’s a lot more to come! 😎
To answer your question. We’re both almost 40 years old and have been working for 20+ years in well paid jobs and a few side hustles - more than half of which was in a very tax friendly environment - this makes a big difference. We’ve always lived well below our earnings level, especially with respect to accommodation and have saved and invested for almost all of that time. We also don’t own any property.
As your pay goes up, but your lifestyle stays the same, the amount you can invest becomes quite significant over time. Let’s just say we’re non-conformists in terms of what society suggests is the best way to live and spend your money. Check out the FIRE movement for some more ideas about how to do this. We’re not extreme with it, but it shows what’s possible.
We’re also looking at other potential revenue streams whilst on this trip and so hopefully that’ll help fund some of it too. We know this isn’t accessible to everyone, which is a real shame, but this is how we are funding our trip.
You can do this with a 9-5 in a lot of cases, if you’re willing to make big sacrifices over a long period of time and keep life simple. You can also earn outside those 9-5 hours and have more than one job / your own company etc. Lastly, if you buy only what you need, not what you want.. this makes a BIG difference - we can’t stress this enough.
Life is for living and this is a great window of opportunity for us to do something special as a family, and so we took it. You also just never know what’s going to happen health wise. We will go back to work afterwards. Where that will be and what we’ll do is still yet to be decided.
Thank you for another amazing movie! I look forward to the next one!
@@eladyom-tov2082 Thank you for the kind words! The next one is coming soon… 😎

A man who knows his Cumulonimbus clouds. Awesome Matt! Lord willing, I will be heading to the Pamirs' in the summer on a motorcycle. I'm meticulously devouring this footage, constantly on repeat and pause, eagerly scavenging for camping spot candidates with stunning views. I have never seen such spectacular views of the Bartang Valley in all of it's glory, despite having watched numerous vlogs on the topic. Whomever of you's is tasked with producing these videos, "Excellent, a job well done!!!". On board for sure. Take care, be safe, enjoy. (Edited: too bad filming wasn't possible during the ascent on the switchbacks. OSMand maps indicate a 59% slope in a specific section of the ascent. In any case, if the loaded Grenadier managed, then it will be an exhilarating climb on an adventure motorcycle.)
@@SsiolisP You’ll love it! We’d go again in a heartbeat if we could, maybe not with the trailer though! 😂 Regarding knowledge of weather, we believe it’s foundational to a trip like this, especially when living under canvas in the wild so much. If you can make good weather decisions, everything else will go much more smoothly…
As for camping in the Bartang Valley, you know how it is. It largely depends on the conditions of the day, how each day goes and then what options are actually viable.. just make early decisions as you don’t want to be doing this at night and you’ll be fine. 👍
Thanks so much for the kind comment regarding the videos! Like you say, it’s a shame with didn’t record the switchbacks but we would’ve been too slow for the drone to do it all based on our experience to date. It also tends to do its own thing on switchbacks, which would’ve been an added distraction. We don’t think you would’ve seen too much from inside the car either that would’ve been that useful - would’ve been still nice to try I guess.
We can see you’ve done your research, 59% upwards slope sounds about right! You’ll be fine on the bike, just take it nice and easy and keep the momentum going. Matt rides too and so can relate to the journey you’re about to embark on! 🍻
@@projectwildearth Don't worry about filming the switchbacks. You were in a fully loaded 4X4 with two children in the back. It's understandable that you would be extra cautious. Plus, there was a high chance of losing the drone in those windy slopes. You made the right call.
Personally, in regards to filming , it's something which I consciously refrain from as much as possible when riding. My personal understanding of how the subliminal mind might work being the reason for that. While riding and filming we have the understanding that the footage will be seen by others. This might unconsciously affect ones mind and lead him into overestimating his abilities, showing off in other words with undesirable consequences.
For instance, the rider (The Story of B) who you showcased early in this video. The one who traversed the submerged road in the Bartang.
Honestly I don't understand what was going through his mind. There was no danger of him drowning, but he was setting himself up for a potential mechanical disaster.
Were his actions fueled by the anticipation of extraordinary footage, or is that man simply fearless in an immature manner? In any respect kudos to him!
My plan in case of a flooded Bartang river, is to simply go around and enter the valley through the north. Lord willing, I will be riding the entirety of available tracks which Tajikistan has to offer, so there is no need for me to rush anything.
It's my understanding that you are nowhere near Tajikistan right now, but I would like to reference a route which I am sure you will love in case you return to the Pamirs one day. It's within the Zorkul national park, south of Murghob. I have no affiliation with these two australian riders, but their video of the Zorkul track is one of the extremely rare videos of this unfamiliar route. It's the most mesmerizing and representative video of this route as well. Route begins at 12 minutes in the video:
th-cam.com/video/O8wa_JQ9QCI/w-d-xo.html (If you ever return to this area, choose the northern route along the Zorkul lake in order to avoid bogging the Grenadier down in swampy terrain).
By the way, I am following you on Facebook. I don't mean to be intrusive, but seeing that you enjoy the unfamiliar and less traversed roads which offer extraordinary views, I have made GPX files of unfamiliar, but yet spectacular routes within Tajikistan which I would gladly share with you if you so wish. No obligations attached, simply the joy of sharing this information to like-minded folks.
I am hoping of riding most of these unfamiliar tracks, at least that is the plan 🤣.
@@SsiolisP What you say about filming is very true. Leah's usually driving while we drone, though, so we're not too concerned about pushing it too much! She's very cautious and rightly so. There are many more places we'd like to film, but she's not comfortable driving, and that's okay. Safety first, as they say.
As for Bert, you'd have to ask him directly about that. We approached him for permission about using his footage but we didn't dig any further. It definitely shows what can happen if the conditions are against you.
We considered the Zorkul track, but as with all these things, it's a balance, and you need a fair amount of contingency, especially with a young family. We had commitments in Kyrgyzstan too and so unfortunately didn't do all we wanted to! Your plan sounds like a great one though. So please keep us posted, it would be great to go back with more focussed time there! They sum is up well in the description of that video. "This video spans just 4 days but it has enough adventure to last a lifetime" 👍

Just make sure you’re prepared for anything, especially if you’re a solo vehicle. Definitely have sat comms device. Speak to as many people as you can in the area before you enter the valley to make sure conditions are ok. And even if they are, keep a close eye on things as it can change rapidly. Lots of people get stuck, stranded and even washed away… if the conditions are not in your favour, your only options are to wait it out or turn back. How's the maintenance of the truck been so far along? You perhaps are the only group of people to have a grenadier so up there in mileage and extreme usage that it's meant for. Hows it been holding up?
@@PretendNella We’ve carried out services on schedule. 20,000 km in Sofia and 40,000 km in Almaty.
We also keep on top of all the forums and groups to see what’s going on with other Grenadiers around the world and make sure we’re checking ours and doing all we can on the preventive maintenance side of things to give ourselves the best chance of not having any major issues. We’ve had no major dramas so far which is a testament to the team who designed, built and tested machine. There’s a few niggles but no showstoppers and that’s the main thing.
We also do full checks in between service intervals to ensure we’re on top of things and hopefully catch anything before if it gets any worse. We’d do this with any vehicle we had though to be honest, it’s a relatively high stakes game we’re playing by taking our whole family to some of these locations and a lot of situations you may find yourself in, can be prevented by being on top of things ahead of time. That’s our thoughts anyway.
Side note - Parts aren’t widely available and so we’re largely reliant on airfreighting them in which is not ideal, more because we have to deal with international postage and customs… and that can vary massively country to country but we knew that when we set off. We’re hoping as time goes on things improve. 👍

Wow absolutely stunning environment there! What backup plans do you have in place for break downs on roads like this?
@@lukeybabes1 Glad you liked the video! Going to remote locations shouldn’t be taken lightly and you’re definitely taking a risk regardless of how prepared you are. There’s also only so much you can do. You can’t carry everything for every eventuality it’s just not practical on a trip like this.
First things first, you need to make sure you can survive for a lot longer than you think you might need to. Then you need a sat comms device. Once you have communication, you can contact the outside world. That itself will bring a whole world of help, knowledge, expertise, ideas and support.
We bring basic spares, a fairly comprehensive tool kit but in our opinion, it ultimately comes down to how resourceful and how good you are at problem solving. You have to back yourself you can get out of any situation you’re willing to put yourself into.
We’ve said this before, but the main thing is not to panic, know you have time, make a plan. Sleep on it if possible and then execute it in the morning. There are people that come through here and live down the valleys. You’d be amazed at how resourceful and willing to help they are. There is a much better community environment the more remote you go. That’s how everyone survives, by helping each other. You’re not going to be the first person who’s ever done these tracks either. If there is a track, there must be a reason for that. So that then becomes your lifeline. Vehicles would’ve broken down before no doubt and therefore they’ll be a level of experience and knowledge in the surrounding area as well as basic resources. This is not always the case as some tracks are old and not used anymore and so you have to take that into account before you go down them. Ultimately you’ll find a way, even if it’s challenging or difficult.
If you’re restricted by time, doing this is a very risky endeavour, if you have time, we’re a great believer that whatever happens, will eventually be resolved. How and how long it will take is not always obvious but that’s half the fun! 🙃
The scenery and warmth of the people is incredible. Great driving too, what a trip. Really enjoyed this thank you, safe travels 👍🏻
The scenery and warmth of the people in the Bartang Valley is unmatched so far on our trip. Just found your channel also looking forward to the reports on how the genedier holds up. I live in the USA and really want one but am skeptical of such a new car company.
@@captainron7904 Hi Ron! Welcome! I hope you’re enjoying the videos so far!
We’ll do some more specific Grenadier ones when we get the chance. We know there’s still a lot of questions and people sitting on the fence. It’s fair enough, it’s still relatively early days. As for the car itself, we’re assuming you’ve done a weekend test drive? Have a good look around but also check the forums and you’ll start to get a good idea how capable it is and what’s likely to arise. Solid components from top manufacturers with a great track record. There’s obviously a few niggles but no showstoppers.
awesome video!!
@G500expedition Thanks so much! 🙏
just come across your channel. Wow the scenery in this video is amazing. One question which is always on the back of my mind and I am sure might have been asked before. What haopens if you break down in some of the remote parts of your drive?
@@vancraft_chronicles Glad you liked the video and the scenery! Like you say, it’s an amazing part of the world. Glad to have you following along!
If you break down in a remote area then you come up with a plan of how you going to get yourself and your family out of the situation or resolve it with the resources you have available. It’s like anything really. Remain calm, think logically, make a plan, sleep on it if you can and then execute it. If it doesn’t work, adapt the plan and try again. Keep doing that until you’re in a better situation. We always think survival first and have more than enough protection, water and food to survive for quite a while before it becomes an issue. This gives you a level of comfort because whatever comes your way, you have some time to think about it.
You have to have the self confidence in your own problem solving skills that you can get yourself out of any situation you put yourself in. If you don’t, maybe don’t put yourself in those situations. Saying that, you can end up in them unintentionally. If you look at it from a life perspective, whatever comes our way in our own lives, we usually find a way to overcome it, eventually. Just apply the same logic.
You can help yourself massively by preparing properly for what you’re about to do. 6Ps comes to mind. Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance 👍 That includes quite a few things on trips like this but it’s all doable with a bit of research and thought. You need to be practical though. You can’t bring everything for every eventuality. That makes no sense in terms of weight and space and you’ll also never think of every eventuality. Experience is the greatest teacher and you only get that by doing it and putting yourself in those situations. You can do all sorts of preparation courses that may help too. Matt actually used to run his own Adventure Academy which covered all of this.
Fascinating! A little concerned about your safety, specially for the children. Be careful out there. Hello from NY.
@@juanjaquez3752 Hi Juan! When you say you’re concerned about our safety, how do you mean? From the rivers and landslides etc? Or the people? 🤔 We always take well informed decisions and are constantly updating our own internal risk assessment.
@@projectwildearth What I meant was the environment. Specially seeing that you have two beautiful kids. You’re more vulnerable because of that.
@@juanjaquez3752 We keep a close eye on things and have a fair amount of experience and are always talking to anyone we come in contact with along the way to update our information. We won’t take any unnecessary risks, like you say, it’s quite different doing this as a family compared to with a group of friends or if we were just a couple. 😊🙏
Amazing video and what an inspiration. You guys are great! Question: Did you ever have to get parts for the Grenadier while on the road? I love that car, but I am considering a Defender or Landcruiser for our adventures, because they (and their spare parts) are more common in most parts of the world. Any thoughts on this? Thanks a lot!
Glad you liked the video! Yup we've had to get parts on the road. You're correct in what you're saying, we knew this would be one of the downsides, but there's always a way. At the moment, we're having to largely depend on airfreight and dealing with all that fun including customs of different countries, which really is not ideal, but there's no other way at the moment until the global supply chain for INEOS is up and running properly. There was a grand plan before we set off in terms of global network and support but that hasn't materliased as we first thought and so we're just making it work. Hopefully in the not-to-distant future, this will improve.
If you're looking at Defender vs Landcruiser, the Landcruiser wins hands down in terms of overall reliability and parts availability across the world.
Which month have you been there? I am going to go there next year by motorbike and I am wondering which month would be best to avoid floods.

@@MarcinSocko Hi Marcin! We went in July. The reality is that there’s no absolute best month to go. It’s very unpredictable and always changing. August - September, maybe even October would give you a good shot but no guarantees… we know of someone that made it in June and then it was a no go for a few weeks after and so it’s tricky to plan for.
