Georgia - The Road to Russia in Our Grenadier | EP12
Episode 12 - Our plan to get to Central Asia was set and it involved driving through Georgia and Russia. We’d been looking forward to Georgia and although it’s known for the Caucus Mountains, its rich culture, and wine, many people don’t make it to the remote desert area located in the far southeastern corner of the country. We were intrigued and we had time so that’s where we headed first. Its unique landscape makes you feel like you’ve been transplanted to the wadis of Oman or the great plains of Africa. It is a vast wild area with a semi-desert climate and home to a large variety of wildlife including bears, snakes, wolves, lynx, jackals, vultures, and more. We also came across some mud volcanoes! Even though we got to Georgia a little early in the season to explore all the tracks and trails around the country, you’ll see we definitely made the best of it! We wild camped the whole time apart from a brief stop in Tbilisi. Russia was next on the horizon.
If you'd like to know more about us, Project Wild Earth, The Projects and how this all came about, click here: projectwildearth.com/ For our journey, we are driving Jane, our INEOS Grenadier, and live in a Patriot X3 Trailer so we can travel off-road to remote locations and be off-grid for long periods of time.

      Stone road wasn’t that bad in the end compared to many of the roads around the world. There’s a few narrow bits, it’s not ideal for turning around or reversing with a trailer and it could definitely go wrong if you’re not concentrating but all in all, it’s fine. As for advertising the Grenadier, for sure, it’s a great spot and quite different to most other places around the world!

      @@projectwildearth Will do... My advice (from my own experience on here)... be natural, try and relax with the A-role to camera and just enjoy the process. Your B-role with views and music is brilliant, and the fact you dribble in a touch of history of where you are aill always interest your audiance. I was very interested in the TET trails, I hadn't heard of them before and are looking into that for myself. People watch these sorts of videos because they love the travel and the places you visit, the info and history of the places you visit is a great way of groing your audience. What you're doing now is very much where I want to get too... enjoy and stay safe.

      Thanks for the constructive criticism and positive way in which it was delivered… Here’s a bit of background for your info - It had been unusually warm and very sunny for over a week before with no signs of any ice or snow on the tracks at all. We’d been all over these mountains and over many 2000m passes with no issues at all. If there had been any warning signs, then we would’ve maybe taken a different approach. It was just this one particular corner that was in the shade for almost the whole time. There was another little bit of ice higher up, as you can see in the video, but that was no issue which is why we thought we’d seen the worst of it. In hindsight, you make a valid point and we possibly should have invested in some chains for this exact situation, despite the probability being extremely low based on our experiences a few weeks previous. We knew we had the shovel with us to get us out of this type of situation but chains would’ve been useful. They’re definitely something to think about for next time, although saying that, you can’t take all the equipment you may need, for all eventualities, as you have to carry all of this, all the time and it’s just not practical for an around the world trip. Sometimes you just have to come up with a solution with what you have, which is what we did, or just not go at all.

      No problems at all! We're glad you enjoyed this one and it's inspiring you to push a little further in your own life! As for not going viral, that made us smile! If only it was that easy. There are all sorts of variables, timing, luck, etc. Comments like this do help to though! From what we've learned, you need to put out good content, every week, for a year before the algorithm starts to take notice. We're not able to do that being on the road with two young kids with our priority being them, but that's ok. There are examples where things have taken off without following this model and the situation is always changing, but we'll just do what we can to the best of our ability, as often as we can, and remain patient. We still see ourselves very much at the beginning of this journey and we're new to the content side of things. We've had to learn it all from scratch and continue to do so, as you can probably tell! As with anything new though, our plan is to start slowly, remain consistent, keep learning and improving and hopefully, the rest will take care of itself! Time will tell...

    You don’t have to dig out the ice on the road. Spreading some grave on the ice is adequate. Gives good traction on the icy road surface…

    • @projectwildearth
      @projectwildearth หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a fair point but with the situation we were in, there was no way we were going to be experimenting with that to work out whether we had the traction we needed or not. There also wasn't a great deal of gravel available, certainly not enough to make us feel comfortable with this course of action. It was a steep downhill slope into a corner with no barrier and our whole family was onboard - the video doesn't do it justice. It was very precarious. Our focus was obviously getting out of the situation safely, promptly and with us much certainty as possible. In our opinion, the safest option was to dig out the ice so we knew we had good traction.

      Thanks so much for the kind comment and for following along with our journey! We’re glad you appreciate what we’re doing and the work that goes into it behind the scenes. Each project we support will be slightly different so that we’re not repeating ourselves but we do hope to communicate some common themes throughout as we believe that’s important. We will cover projects you don’t hear much about, the positive and inspiring side of things that can be used as a blueprint by others around the world to show that it’s not all doom and gloom! There’s a lot of amazing people doing amazing things and we want the world to know about it. This is just our way to do our little bit to shine a light on those that are doing the hard work on the ground to protect what we all love for generations to come! As for Albania off-road, it definitely has its challenges but it’s all part of the fun! We’re not sure when you went but we can report there’s plenty of food, water and fuel now. 😊 You do have to plan a little conservatively and maybe not always choose the “most interesting route” but we guess that goes for anywhere that’s a little remote and unpredictable! And from Pogradec to Tirana we found a very challenging road but it was already end of October and it turned out to be foggy and very rainy in the mountains - and of course we got lost and it took us 8 hours to go back to the tarmac at 10pm - we saw only some shepards, a bear a wolf😅 . Professional images, cut and music. Great landscape and your cultural curiosity makes this series on of a kind. And your kids are blessed with a unique experience in nature and of course blessed with best parents on Earth. I am a motorcyclist and know some of the TET routes in Italy and France but would bring my Grenadier on these routes only if I have experienced them before with my motorcycle before going there. Kudos. Just enjoy the best life of your life.

      We're really glad you're enjoying our videos and massively appreciate your kind words : ) Regarding the TET, Matt also rides and agrees that a recce on two wheels would be a good idea like he does for his company AdventureX (adventurex.com/) before each trip. Unfortunately, we're not able to a recce for Project Wild Earth and so we have to rely on our research, input from the locals and have a little adventure along the way! We've had a few tricky situations but we've managed to navigate our way through them and been ok so far! 😃

    I was always going to love following along on your Journey, but what has me looking forward to this more than anything else on TH-cam is the quality of production. You are assembling golden shot after golden shot, great music, great voice over which is thoughtful but not contrived, the character of this little crew of adventurers is coming through strong but without pretence. If this is your first venture into video production you are gifted. If not you are making great use of everything you have learned. All my encouragement to all of you.

      @vistatrekker - Thanks so much, we really appreciate it! It’s a lot of work behind the scenes as I’m sure you know but we try and do the best we can while on the road with our kids. We know there’s a lot of content out there and so we want to be respectful of people’s time and try and immerse them in nature from our perspective without drivelling on. It also serves as a great memory for us and so win win all around! As for your question regarding video production, we’re absolute beginners, same with the drone but we’re starting to put things together and learn the ropes! The whole thing is very “run and gun” as we just don’t have the time or capacity with the kids, there’s pros and cons to this of course. Forever striving to do things better but at the same time trying to remember what’s really important here. There’s still a long way to go but as we do more videos, we become more efficient and start to understand the whole process a little more. Our overall aim is to do the absolute best we can to do our bit support those out there doing the work on the ground to preserve and protect our planet with our storytelling. The better we are, the more impact we’re going to be able to have. 😊

    Hi there.... Congratulations first and foremost, for being a beautiful family, for the initiative, and for the courage of doing what you're doing and showing it to us. Didn't see any video on your channel regarding the prep for the trip... I'm also looking into trailers and yours made me curious...what is it? Which criteria did you use to choose this one specifically? About the grenadier.... Not scared being such a new vehicle may pose an issue if some problem happens....? Thanks!

    • @projectwildearth
      @projectwildearth 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Bruno, thanks for the kind words! As for the prep, this was our first video, we really had next to no time to prepare.. th-cam.com/video/qGj1sWbNyS4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=p-9em3CLK0MNZfoN Our trailer is a Patriot X3. In terms of the criteria. This is more of a complex answer which we will address in an upcoming video. We'll do the same with the Grenadier. Short answer for the Grenadier - We've been following the Grenadier since the concept was first revealed as Projekt Grenadier and have maintained good communication with them ever since. We've loved the whole idea from the beginning, the story in the pub with Sir Jim's frustrations about the Defender etc and think it's amazing that it is now a reality! None of this was seriously in our life plan to be honest, it was always a distant dream but Covid changed all that. (Back story here - projectwildearth.com/about-us) Inflation was rife and when we wrote out the spec of the vehicle that we thought would work for us and searched what was available, it was looking like the Grenadier should just come online in time for our departure from London in July 2023. It ticked almost all the boxes, was built with mostly proven components by specialists within the industry, was backed by a driven billionaire on a mission, had a 5 year global warranty, and as much as we never thought we'd buy a brand new vehicle, with all things considered, it just made sense to commit when comparing it to everything else at the time. It was a bold move I guess but we have no regrets so far... We have a relatively well-kitted-out Trialmaster. Matt's used to doing these kinds of trips in very unsuitable vehicles that are far less capable than the Trailmaster and so we're confident the Grenadier will do the job.

      There’s still a few left across Europe which is great! As our title suggests, this area in the Făgăraș Mountains is just one them. 😊

    What a lovely video you are doing great work, thank you. Nature is definitely a healer and even if we can’t all get to these places, it is good just to know that these wild places still exist and hopefully grow. The mayor is a real good soul and along with mossy earth doing a great service to nature. Any plans to go to Bulgaria? Look forward to the next one, safe travels

      @projectwildearth 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your support and kind words! Like you say, it would be great if we could all access all of these wild areas but we know that's not possible. At the same time, just being in nature, anywhere has very similar benefits. This has been proven time and time again all over the world with a number of people in several different situations and circumstances. The Mayor is a very special soul, we're glad that came across in the video. The group of people working together in that area are all working very hard to rewild and regenerate that area and make this world a better place for us all. As for Bulgaria, watch this space!

      @@projectwildearth That is encouraging stuff. We have a place in a very remote part of southern Bulgaria that we are renovating with natural products, lots of nature there. If you’re heading to the Rodopes let us know. We are trying to get involved in local conservation efforts and you would be welcome. All the best

    Really enjoyed this. I’ve often flown over these mountains and seen the hundreds of miles of indigenous forests, in autumn in particular they are spectacular. So interesting and intriguing to envisage a Yellowstone of Europe. Thank you for bringing us along as always.

    I enjoy your videos. you can even make them shorter, 5-10 minutes and it will be all good. I'm a big fan of gopro on top of the roof between the safari windows as a perspective when you roll into new areas and don't want to go too elaborate with your filming. Good luck!

    • @projectwildearth
      @projectwildearth 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment Par. As for the length, it largely depends on how much footage we have to be honest. GoPro on the roof is a good idea. 👍
