Outstanding. As a pianist I always listen to Zimerman performances to improve myself.
He was only 22 when this beautiful recording was made, and when that photo was taken.
Zimerman 's playing is very charming. He has melancholy tenderness that I like very much.

Zimerman is among the handful of truly great modern Chopin interpreters, like Rubinstein, or those particular pieces Horowitz does without peer. Zimerman's voicing, perfect rubato, remarkable control, sense of structure, are all unmatched, and in today's era of recording, his performances are breathtaking.
Among his first performances at Tokyo .1978 was the first time he gave concerts in Japan.
Not to put him down in any way (I save that for classical porn star Yuja Wang), but have you heard Lipatti?

Hm, Zimerman once mentioned that Chopin himself had very small hands. Possibly Chopin couldn't play his waltzes like Zimerman (or Rubinstein)! ;)
Arguably the greatest romantic period interpreter on the piano - Zimerman... He doesn't only play - he goes deep into the meaning of each and every note in any piece he plays.

No-one plays the waltzes better than KZ in my view. It is the perfect blend of rhythmic bounce, virtuosity, and simple feeling for phrasing.
Personally, I cannot decide between Rubinstein and Zimmerman when it comes to the Chopin waltzes.

Yes. I heard him play the 4 scherzi in London many years ago. Other works in the programme were the Brahms Ballades and Szymanowski's Masques. He is an amazing artist.

I was supposed to be there at the historical moment at the Disney Hall but because of the grad school exam, I gave away the ticket to my friend.

Yes, in 1976 he recorded the same program for Deutsche Grammophon and it was released on LP, but never on CD.

He did! I first discovered him on a cassette tape from a used book store. The first recording of all the waltzes that I could choreograph to without suddenly finding myself in the middle of the floor not knowing what to do next. That led to his CDs of the Chopin concerti with the Polish orchestra he put together. Sublime!

No rivalry.Both pay unconditional respect to the score and Chopin's dynamic indications.Yet they sound unique. That's a miracle..not rivalry.

This is truly Chopin born again through KZ. He even looks like The Great Chopin. I want to meet him before I leave this earth.

I would never have heard his version otherwise.
Many years ago I remember reading about how, shortly after the issue was released, Zimerman decided he was not happy with the end product, and had Deutsche Grammophon withdraw it from the catalogue. I am not entirely sure the source on this.
About the Brahms’ early piano works though, I found a direct source, for those of you who read German or are willing to use DeepL or Google Translate:

@@junkumazawa5578 The LP of the Waltzes is still available on ebay and other second hand sellers. He has withdrawn some other recordings and his fans are still waiting for the rumored disc of the Chopin sonatas and another Szymanowski disc.

Wonderful as is Zimerman’s early LP of the waltzes (never reissued on cd) this Japanese recital captures a spontaneous joy often lacking in his later performances, which are perfect but calculated. Thanks so much for sharing.

Is it possible to download a quality recording of this beautiful concert? There is no other performance of Chopin's Waltzes that has such beauty, understanding and vivacity. The timing and emphasis is simply perfect, the slow waltzes are played with exsquisite taste, poetic and tender. The fast waltzes are crystal-clear, incredibly accurate and utterly exciting. I have the DG vinyl LP that was BBC Radio 3's Andrew McGregor's record review first choice, best performance and recording, but this live performance is fabulous.

There are some performances of Maestro Zimerman that was not released digitally and can only be purchased as an album. Masterpiece! However Krystian Zimerman himself was not entirely satisfied with the recording of the Chopin Waltzes (and many others of his youth)! Sadly enough Zimerman withdrew the excellent DGG recording! *sigh*

たしかプログラムにはほかに、マズルカ2-3曲とノクターンOp15-2に続けて「アンダンテスピアナートと華麗なる大ポロネーズOp.22」で締めくくられていた記憶があるのですが、そちらの方の音源や映像などはお持ちでないでしょうか？その時の演奏が忘れられない一人です。
コメント、ありがとうございます。この音源は当時のFM放送をエアチェックしたもので、知人から譲り受けました。知人も同日のリサイタルからの他の演目は持っていないようです。
マズルカはOp. 6/2, Op. 41/1, Op. 63/3の3曲、またリサイタルでは2番のスケルツォも演奏されたようです。

@@junkumazawa5578 さん。早々のお返事ありがとうございます。演目はまさにリンク先のチラシの通りだと思います。スケルツォ2番は記憶にないのですが、もしかしたら東京でも入っていたの鴨。自分もその時のFM放送をラジカセでエアチェックしていましたが、その後のカセットテープ使いまわしにより、いつの間にかワルツは消え、手元には音質の悪い後半の演目だけが残っている状態です。
中でも最後に演奏されたOp.22は、ショパコン当時よりさらに洗練され、残された彼の演奏中で最高峰のものでしたので、是非優良な音源で聴いてみたいと永年思い続けていました。
確かワルツ全曲も含めNHKテレビでも全プログラムが通しで放送されたはずですが、こちらの映像は未だ視聴できていません。当時NHKは「ジメルマン」で表記統一させていましたね。ポリーニは「ポルリーニ」でした。

カセットテープの件は残念です…。Op. 22の演奏、そんなに素晴らしいものだったとは！是非とも聴いてみたいものです。コンクールでの演奏は、多少の粗さがあるものの会場の熱気や高揚感も含めて楽しめるものでしたね。

@@junkumazawa5578 NHKの番組表アーカイブなんてものがあるのですね。これは知りませんでした。早速「ジメルマン」で検索してみますと、どうやらこの中にOp.22は入っていないので、テレビ放映があったと思っていたのは、NHK FMでの放送限定だったようですね。番組表の曲目で「ほか」とあるのもありますが、Op.22はほお15分かかりますので、ワルツ全曲＋P協１番だけで1時間半ですから放送枠に入らないことは歴然です。
演奏が素晴らしくかったのも、「ライブ録音」という面もプラスされてのものだったかと思います。この放映後ポリドールからOp.22入りのLPが日本でも発売されたので、あの感動を！ということで飛びついて(買うお金はなかったので当時のレンタルレコード 友＆愛で借りて)ダビングしたのですが、スタジオ録音でピアノの弦の近くに置かれたマイクからの音だったため、あの「残響感」がなく『なんか違う！これじゃない。』とガッカリしたのを思い出します。
@@Su---- NHKのサイトは収録日や正確な番組内容が分からないのが難点ですが、かなり役に立つので頻繁に使っています。1978年当時の放送内容に関する推測は、仰る通りだと思います。自分は2000年前後の生まれなのですが、当時のクラシック音楽を取り巻く環境には憧れを募らせるばかりです。
ご指摘の音源は、LPでしか発売されていないものですね。残念ながら聴いたことがないので、気になりはしています。ショパンのワルツやモーツァルト、ブラームスのソナタなど、再発を許していない音源も沢山ありますね。
