If you buy the car for racing, then obviously a V6 is not appropriate for such a heavy car. But the 2.7 V6 is perfect for a sporty daily driving. It still kicks a punch (way more than people want to admit), it is more economical than bigger engines and it costs way less in yearly taxes (at least where I live, going from 2.7 to 3.5 will increase the cost by 3, and we are talking in thousands of dollars yearly simply for the tax, excluding the very expensive but compulsory insurance, which will also go through the roof with a 3.5).
And the 2.7 V6 engine is very reliable as long as you change your oil twice a year and check the water pump from time to time. Had it for 16 years, never had any major problem with it. And I know other people who had the same experience wither with Chargers or Chryslers. But I personally don't know anybody who had those supposed big issues with those engines. Just don't be lazy and maintain your car, and it'll practically never let you down. Reliability is often tied to the driver himself, more so than to the engine.
Really, if you want a car with muscle feeling, sport handling and a good amount of practicability, but are also on a budget and don't want to pay more for stats you will never ever use on the open road, and if you know how to take care of a car by doing the checkups and oil changes regularly, then the 2.7 v6 Charger is the perfect car for you. Buy a used one which has been maintained properly and you'll be golden.

In 2018 I bought a 2010 Charger R/T. I have some of my own recommendations for any buyers:
    1. Just get the damn 5.7L Hemi. It gets only 1 mpg worse than the 3.5L V6, makes 120hp more, and is more reliable. It also sounds glorious. (However the 3.6L V6 used from 2011+ is really good.)
    2. Find ones driven by old people! Seriously, a lot of the 5.7L Chargers were bought by boomers nostalgic for late 60's muscle, and they have not been romped on.
    3. Look for sleeper R/T's. My R/T is kind of a base model - all it has is the 5.7L Hemi and leather seats. It has two tiny Hemi badges and one R/T badge on the back. Since it didn't have the "sport" package it doesn't have the spoiler or brakes. However, this means that these cars are less likely to have been owned by boy-racers because they're not as flashy/sporty-looking. Again, usually owned by old people.
    4. Try to find an AWD R/T! They are a bit rare and won't do burnouts, but if you live in places with bad roads and weather this will help you out SO much. It also has negligible effect on gas mileage due to how AWD works specifically on Chargers.

Davy Rando that’s exactly what I got 😂 I got a 08 R/T with fairly low mileage for an older car (can’t remember the exact mileage but it was under 100,000) had one owner, paint looked brand new, didn’t have the wing or anything, the interior was black leather in amazing condition which I loved and it was AWD.

I disagree with the awd if you plan to mod power. The front end will blowout before you can blink your eyes.

I've been looking at a 2007 SRT8 for $15000 with 44k miles. I'm really thinking about the 2013-2014 models because the AWD. I want a V8 and that's all that's stopped me from the 3.5 V6s. The issues with getting the SRT8 is that I wont be able to look at it before hand from a dealer due to distance. I have no intentions to mod the car and want to use it as a daily driver. I also live in Vermont, it has harsh winters.

Little late, but I managed to snag a 2007 Dodge Charger R/T base that was single-owner and only had 68,000 miles on it! It's my first car and I love it. I think it was owned by an older guy, it had low miles and was taken to a dealer for everything. So far I've done an oil change, spark plug upgrade (from copper to iridium), replaced 2 of the ignition coil packs (I broke the rubber boots), added an aftermarket stereo (I'm 20, can't blame me), replaced windshield wipers, replaced the radiator cap, and I'm planning to replace the front end rubber and shocks soon. I've put almost 1,500 miles on it in the 2 months I've had it. I wash it regularly and wax it.

I have a 06 srt8 and I love it too much fun. I can’t speak for rt chargers but look at motor mounts on srt8. They go bad a lot driver side always goes first. Usually you upgrade to the 09 manual tranny engine mount. It’s a much stronger better designed mount than originals. I upgraded mine and they only cost $40 bucks extra. Totally worth it

Great vid, I have an 07 sxt 3.5 AWD. Alot better in the snow than I thought with all season tires. also like to point out a common problem is the transmission conductor plate. I hadn't hit 100k kms when it went. $1600 CAD to fix at shop but I did it myself ($250) and after that NO issues. Really enjoy my car, all cars have maintenance to deal with so don't let it deter from buying a charger.

The myth about a RWD car isn't good at snow is one of the badest strategic lies of the Automobile industrie payed Auto-magazines ;)
Because the whole Auto industrie would produce & sell FWD Cars, because they're the cheaper ones to produce, they made a lot different things that this lie about RWD cars would get in the brains of the people. And not only this!!! Because the only one Problem of RWD Cars in Winter conditions is that they ALL, REALLY ALL have NO LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL in stock Versions!
But even tthe MISSING LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL is the SMOKING GUN! ;)
When you drive the same RWD Car with, and without a Limited Slip diff, ESPECIALLY IN WINTER CONDITIONS, you'll see, feel and understand what i like to tell you! ;)
A very nice example is the '86 BMW E30 325i M-Technik 1 Coupe what i had some years ago. However it was the special M-Technik Version for sportive use and also for the Race track, this light RWD Car had No Limited Slip diff and hey, that wasn't a great Car in motorsport condition use! Because in every tight turn the inner wheel begann to smoke the power and the car gets slower especially by the so importand Moment when accelerating out of the Corners.... I can't let this potental Car without a Limited Slip diff and i've used a 25% limited Slip diff out of an BMW E30 325ix; the rare AWD Version of the BMW E30 Series...
And the result was a completely different Car!
Because after i've build the 25% Limited Slip diff in the RWD 325i Coupé, it was the 1st time for this Car that it was REALLY performance and Motorsport usable!
Most people didn't Drive cars like me and so they never recognize about those huge differets between a RWD car with or without a Limited Slip diff.
But what was the big present with use the limited Slip diff in this RWD E30 325i; the Car had a lot more GRIP than any FWD car and it was a lot better to Drive it in winter, however it was a so deep Car!
I live at Bavaria in Germany, i've to drive Mountain Pass roads and i also make Motorsport, too.
But by me at over 1.300 Meters & more in the German and Austrian Alpen (Like the Rocky Mountains) i've a lot of snow in winter.
I know about what i'm writing, when i Tell you the limited Slip diff is THAT PART what EVERY RWD CAR NEED, Not only for snow, even also to get a RWD car with really Motorsport possibilities for the TRACTION.
    And that's the Key: TRACTION
what is always a lot better in an RWD Car, If it has a limited Slip diff ;) (& really Not traction Control, that's also the cheapest, biggest bullshit of all Younger things in Cars, too ;))

ive owned all 4 models of charger and im only 19 believe it or not. in my experience, for v6, buy the SXT. Much more luxurious but the main reason is the 2.7L engine is complete dog crap. Theyre known for breaking down. For the V8 models this will actually surprise you but i recommend the R/T with the 5.7L. This being that the 5.7L HEMI is an engine that dodge has been perfecting for years. its the most reliable of the 4 engine sizes. The 6.1L HEMI in the SRT8 is known for having its problems bcuz its an engine that dodge has not perfected. Yes, the car is better looking and more fun, but the 5.7L is just as fun but a lot more reliable. You can even get the 5.7L with all the features of the SRT8. My R/T had full black leather with suede, nav radio, and SRT bucket seats.

Hey Marspeed, Still a Great Video (!) and good info for all considering Dodge Chargers. As a 2008 SRT8 owner with the 6.1 HEMI--I must say AGAIN,....... this motor is "Bulletproof" reliable.
I'm at 132,000 miles and it just Purrs like a Kitten at idle, and still pulls like a freight train at Highway Speeds. The only recent repair I've had lately is the Serpentine Belt (which drives the A/c, Power Steering, Water pump, and Alternator), Idler Pulley , and the Spring Tensioner Arm & Pulley changed out with all new parts. With parts $$ and Labor $$ (If you're not a do-it-yourselfer) is around $300. I've had Zero, Dodge/Mercedes NAG-1; Auto-stick Transmission problems (change Trans fluid and Filter in pan every 60,000). No oil leaks. No valve or lifter tick issues. No cooling fan issues.

Had a 2006 Magnum SXT. 5 speed transmission. RWD. Problem with these cars were the lousy Mercedes parts, namely the front suspension and transmission (5 speed). I replaced many of the front suspension parts in the 4-1/2 years I had it. About 4 sets of tie rods. Pittman arm. Both lower control arms (because the bushings can't be pressed out you have to replace the whole arm), front sway bar bushings. With labor about $2k in suspension parts replacement. Transmission went into limp/shudder mode and had to have a module replaced. Nice looking car, but the biggest money pit of a car I ever owned.

The dreaded "Pink Thingy" is called a Parking selector-"Locking Pawl" on the inside of the plastic Automatic Floor Stick Shifter box . Once again, here is a plastic factory part under spring tension by a cable--that can wear out, snap-off, and leave you stranded, as you can't get the car out of PARK. With these newer engines, use ONLY the specified oil by the owner's manual. The tight tolerances in the engine don't allow any variation in oil, like say a 1971 Ford 390 V8. Specific oil is an absolute key factor in new cars. Don't use what you think may be better for it.

Congrats! You will LOVE it. Depending on your mileage at purchase time, check the Internet for the Recommended Charger, SRT8 Maintenance Service Schedule. Get your car all fixed up and it'll go forever and ever like mine has (132,000 miles). The 2008 Charger SRT8 has been one of My "Most Favorite" cars out of all the performance cars I've ever owned. I take it to Sebring Raceway in Florida and drive it round-and-round the historical track, during "Track Touring " sessions and it's a B-L-A-S-T ! Hold The; "Traction ESP button" down solid for like 15 seconds while you're sitting still, and it will go, "Ding !--Chime" and it Disables ALL the Traction Control modes. You can really toss it around the track like that, and lay some rubber.

Bought My 2008, SRT8 Charger "Used" in 2013, with only 6,500 miles on it. Now, in 2017 it has just passed the 110,000 mile mark. I have only done routine maintenance (and of course a set of tires about every 32,000 miles) as per the Dodge Owner's manual and so far it has cost me; $3,215. For a reliable, awesome, 425 hp daily driver, I think that's fair.

I guess it’s that they CAN be junk. But seems that’s especially so if you treat them more like sports/muscle cars than a sedan. The Charger is like a hybrid so it’s not really meant to be pushed hard all the time and people tend to do that with these cars and they need maintenance more often because of it. At least, that’s my consensus on it.

    • @ftffighter
      @ftffighter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Everyone I've talked to says the same thing when they are driven daily. If they are babied, driven little and are garage queens, they hold up well. Unless it's an SRT model, they don't like being stressed and even the SRT models have problems with durability, excluding that fabulous 6.4L Hemi. The 6.1L Hemi's are good too but usually need looked after more. The 5.7L's are solid, even more so in some ways than the SRT engines, but have their issues. The problem is, these cars are just too heavy to beat on and get away with it without the stress becoming too much on worn down parts. The failure tolerances aren't very good.

Hey Marspeed, Great Video (!) and good info for all considering Dodge Chargers. As a 2008 SRT8 owner, I want to add to your informative items about what to be careful on, when looking at the 5.7 V8 (R/T) cars. There was a Tech Service Bulletin on the 5.7 V8 for Timing Chain problems. The Factory, hard plastic internal "Chain Tension Follower" was getting heat stressed & breaking inside, behind the timing cover. Caused engine seizure issues and piston to valve damage. Hot Rod Magazine did an article on it, because it happened to their "Loaner" Test Challenger with a 5.7 V8. Make sure you check vehicle history for this fix/repair before buying. Also, if the motors are ever "Overheated" past like 230 degrees, the valve guides can come loose from the aluminum heads and it'll drop a valve into a piston. This information is also on the Internet Forums and among Dodge members in the know. So far, my SRT8 ( 6.1 HEMI ) has been bulletproof at 95,000 miles. Nothing but oil changes (approx. $95-100 each time = Mobil ONE) , tires (Approx $800-850 each set of FOUR at 30,000 miles) , and pads/brakes (Approx $220 for just pads installed every 40,000 miles, or $600-$700 for New Rotors as well).

      @jimh.5551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@dustinogle9522 O.K. I cannot say anything from experience as I have never used NOX on any of my vehicles. To me, it just isn't worth "Stressing the Internals" of your motor, if not done correctly. If it was me, I'd walk away from the 2010 SRT8 car with Nitrous hits. My, "Never Nitrous'd" 6.1 Hemi SRT8, has 177,500 miles on it now and just purrs like it's only got 10,000 on it. If you really, really want the car, ask the guy selling it, to let a mechanic pull the 16 (two each cylinder) spark plugs and check them for Lean Burn condition, or even better, take a technician's view borescope and look inside the cylinders to see if they all look consistently, "normal". 99 thousand miles is nothing on these 6.1 HEMI motors.

@@aaronharwick6966 I got one 3 1/2 years ago as my first car i bought at a week or so over 17, with my own money. Besides the front end wearing out (at like 120k miles) just the arms ect, which i changed all out and still have a small/mild clunk, but besides that, the brakes going bad if you like to beat on your cars and abuse them, nothing major on my part. It's gonna clunk or rattle. Chasing them will drive you mad and make you broke even if you fix it yourself. I'm a mechanic and i've had 3-4 things that are TOTALLY f'd up and FAR beyond bad. I replaced them and no noticeable change. upper control arm had 1/4 inch of play and it didn't change anything lol. But yeah, i do oil changes every 3k miles (overkill) with some off the shelf synthetic oil (on sale) and a OEM mopar filter as they're like 4 5 bucks AT THE DEALER, (Canadian) and no issues yet. I had a Power steering pump go, now i tell you, this shouldn't be a problem for you. I was drifting the MF LOCK to LOCK in the snow and just having a blast after work. The poor thing just overheated BADLY and blew up started whining bad and not working well. For sure a me problem. It's my first car, i beat the hell out of it and other than the stupid front end, brakes going bad often (with hard stopping and some spirited driving) I've loved the thing.

The 05-10 Charger/300 are cheap to maintain/own. Only this is you will have to replace the front suspension if not already done..Moog has a great replacement part that people say last ! Cars always start/drive get you there and back.. Mechanically reliable only front bushings crack and ruin the suspension parts on 05-10.
Smooth, Quite cars,no rattling,no squeaks solid cars.Handle really good, take corners at high speed awesome, thus harder on suspension lol.
My dad owned a brand new 2006 Charger SXT,only problem ever was the front suspension needed replacement...because the front suspension was a Mercedes design,2011 - current are a Chrysler/Dodge design.
No rattling, no squeaking, solid ,quiet reliable car. He only changed the timing belt once and water pump at same time
Used cars could be driven rough, thats how you end up with cars that rattle and make noises like you say they so called all do.
He had 230,000 miles before selling it in late 2014 for a new 2015 300 S Hemi 8 speed .
the 05-07 LX cars with the 3.5 5 speed were quicker than the 4 speed 3.5 of 08-10.7.3 0-60 and 15.3 1/4 mile times were recorded..Not as quick as the 5.7 Hemi that runs 5.2 for those years..
I still have my 2005 Magnum RT I bought new,98,000 miles as I own several new/Classic Mopar's..I kept it because I still like it,kept in my shop/Garage..That one too needed front suspension work/bushings wore out 75,000 miles..I have 350,000 miles on my 1968 Dodge charger RT with its original suspension and a 1966 Chrysler 300 with 260,000 original miles and all original suspension, and are quiet and super smooth ,no rattling etc.I owned several 2011 to 2016 Challenger's300's and Charger's and they are better than the 05-10's ..Cheap to own/maintain as are the 05-10's but you will have to replace the front suspension and use MOOG those are good..
