iTD Gus is a likable young guy and I like his channel because he tries to video every repair and upgrade he is doing. Education repair content on Cars, RV, Boats and planes are good things to know. Never know when you might need it.
Good lord.. All you need is a SAFE running ship, that will go from point A to point B. Not hot water showers; working a/c; pretty interior; and my god man stabilizers? Plus things break or stop working on a journey, especially long passages, what captain doesn't expect it. Plan, prepare, and if something go wrong, then roll your sleeves up and get your butt to work. Man up buddy. You are too hoity toity for this boat transport job. Might be better to find something made yesterday to "captain" around.
Commercial fisherman from Australia here, i agree lmao this captain sounds like a princess who only worked on billionaire mega yachts. I would not know what a stabiliser is and worked in 45 knot winds on a 28 foot boat lmao. scary days. no radar and no autopilot.. real men drive boats..
I was very interested in buying an old Hatteras…. Once I really dug into things I realized that you would need very deep pockets along with tons of time to bring back to seaworthy condition. I went in the direction of a smaller well cared for boat and I feel it was the right choice. Good luck
I experienced the same thing working on IT equip it's overwhelming with all the different systems but once you just break them down to each individual system you eventually gain confidence and understand how everything interacts. You have got good judgment just go with it! How you gut!
Yea! Another Hatteras with 6-71s!!! I recall a comment a week or so back when spotting a Hatteras LRC about the Detroits being good for only 5,000 hrs!!!
Yup, old Detroit 2 strokes aren't designed to idle and as such are a liability on a boat, just for the fact that hardly anyone worth a shit even knows how to work on them anymore and the special tools that it requires are no longer available.... So yeah, I pass on trawlers with Detroits all the time .
Boat looks good to me. If the engines run, if the fuel tanks are clean, the hull is in one piece and you have no cables without insulation she is good to go. You don't need air conditioning, it is nice to have, but not a must. Old spots of leakages are a great indication where you can expect water when it starts to rain. You are only on the boat to bring it to a new location, it is up to the owner to restore the boat to a great condition. As long as you don't sail into a hurricane you will be fine.
With all respect, if you are confident in the hull and propulsion / steering systems - from what I see the only real deficiency is a dated radar (understandable concern - no redundancy) and no chart plotter. Wouldn't a tablet or 3 with Navionics suffice? She's not in pristine cosmetic condition, but I guess i'm not seeing what you're seeing. I'm sure it goes without saying that you'll conduct a rigorous sea trial prior to departure. I guess my question is - what are you so worried about? Honest question, no sarcasm intended at all. Just interested to know your thoughts.. Thanks for the video!
From what little bit I could see, I really like the interior layout of the boat. But it;s going to take a lot of money to make it livable and cruiseable.
You can’t avoid working on the boat if it’s a 150k boat built pre 1990! A similar size quality modern lower hour yacht will cost a million on your best day!
Your voice shows the tension not the video. Sounds like a boat that needs a series of small shake out trips before a massive trip. It always better to walk away then run unnecessary risk.
good heads up comments here on bringing up the mechanicals...problem with an old boat like that is its going to get good and shaken on the crossing...who knows what will come loose. To me that boat looks like it's seen better days...get a good weather report!!! Good luck!!
Captain Paul - it will be a challenging experience however attention to detail and an accurate Agreed to check list with the owner may assist - love your work as always Cheers
If this is the boat from Ft Lauderdale/Nassau, it was offered at $150k. Engine time didn't seem bad and had all new AC units. All electronics were ancient....IF this is the same boat. In the 58LRCs like Snapdragon, the 471s were standard and 671 was an option. In the 65LRC, the 671 was your only choice.
Always remember kids, there are way more old trawlers out there that have been neglected, than there are people who want to buy them. Never purchase through a Yacht broker. Make the seller pay for the survey. Never pay more than 3/4 of what they are asking.... Sometimes even less and always remember that 9 times out of 10, you are doing them a favor by taking it off their hands to stop their financial bleeding of slip fees and continued maintenance and the necessity of visiting it weekly to make sure it's not sinking in it's slip. 🤣
I made the trip from Miami to Naval Station Rodman on the western end of the Panama canal in a 58' Stapleton yacht confiscated from drug smugglers in 1986. Boat was reconditioned to pristine condition before the trip. Four crew: 2 Navy SEALS, 1 marine and one Navy Intel Officer (me). If there is any doubt, there is no doubt ... don't do it. Also we got jacked up by Nicaraguan Customs on Isle de San Andres. Unpleasant.
@@stevekelly8494 Thanks 🙏 we don’t plan on stopping and the boat is going into the boatyard for refit before we even attempt to go and make sure we are good
WOW that boat has missed a few maintenance intervals over it's what 30 some years? If it has been used as a floating condo for the 5 or more years how many systems can you trust?
Yes indeed! I do love watching people let their emotions dictate their decision to buy old trawlers... Most haven't a clue to what they are getting into.... LMAO 🤣
Brother from what I see in the video I wouldn’t be comfortable gambling on making the crossing. Maybe things were left in disarray from inspections and surveyors, just too many what if’s at this point.
Well, it’s not meant to be negative however, you cannot assume that the systems are working correctly. Everything needs to be tested and verified prior. And if there are any deficiencies they need to be communicated thoroughly. This particular delivery is to cross the entire Gulf of Mexico and you must keep safety as the top priority.
🤷♂They often say your two happiest days of owning a boat are when you buy it and when you sell it. Like an inground pool, something to dump your money into
Six weeks hard work to get the thing even seaworthy. Practically all the internal areas need month's of refurbishment. The wood is seriously neglected. Don't assume that bearings and running gear is correct, strip it and make sure.
As you stated, you are just the Captain transporting a vessel from point A to B. The owner should be held responsible to have a complete Survey of Condition done on the vessel. You as a Captain can request to have certain systems repaired or replaced to guarantee a safe transport. If you are not happy with the condition then simple refuse to provide your service. I am assuming you do not have a contract. If you do then you should have included that the owner is required to have all inspections and ships systems in working order to your satisfaction before transportation.
As someone who's bought and sold many trawlers over 50 plus years, that's way to much for that boat. $50-60 tops in its current state.... Remember that due to the economy it's a 100% buyers marke, plus factor in that it's now winter, also that it's a old boat that needs a lot of work and materials... You can do better if you start looking in Florida... seriously. Especially after the storms, I've been seeing some incredible deals on similar sized trawlers recently, because the owners can't even find a slip for it due to all them being destroyed in several areas and they just want to GTF out from under them, because they need to rebuild their houses. 😉 Then there's the trawlers that sustained damage from the storms.....most are cosmetic damage, minor structural or minimal water damage from fresh water coming in through broken hatchs, doors and windows... Most would be a way better investment for you and so much less $ to repair.
Don't do it, you'll be sorry..... Better to buy in as a co- owner/partner on a newer, better, trawler that is already 100% and requires only regular maintenance, the occasional repair and slip fees. Trust, thats what you really want. 👍
Was a survey done? Did you check out the boat at all before buying? What you are pointing out is just cosmetics. Hatteras is a good sturdy boat. All boats require maintenance. Usually, 10% of boat price. A BOAT- break out another thousand or it's a hole in the water you pour money into it.

You do realize that you need to replace gauges ,radar and sonar even if it did work. It’s way out of date. Probably gonna need a new anchor chain, bilge pumps, all kinds of stuff to make sure you don’t sink if anything happens.
You need reliable Motors and steering and no major leaks and hopefully Auto pilot. The rest is cosmetic. I Need AC and a State Room and a chart plotter?? Are you really a Captain or a paying Guest? Use a tablet or a Phone and if its too hot sleep in the Saloon.
