I, too, work within the brands mentioned above and can say factories charge higher for the bigger sizes. We absorb the cost but I imagine other companies may just charge higher retails for combined straight and plus. Some things to keep in mind is extra yardage required to make and that fabric only comes in a certain width, so there may be extra cutting and assembly required, which could account for higher garment cost. I’m not saying it’s right, but that is probably why Maurices is charging two different prices, because they are paying their vendors two different prices. The reason that there is an odd overlap in sizing between straight sizes and plus sizes is because straight size clothing is patterned from a sample size (usually a size 8) and adjusted up or down for the rest of the sizes. Plus size clothes are also patterned from a sample size (usually a size 18 or 20) and adjusted up and down from there, but the sample is based on a plus sized body. There is a big difference between a straight size brand just making their clothes in bigger sizes and actually designing for a plus sized body. Our bodies don't gain weight evenly. Because you are in between (I am as well), it can be confusing trying to figure out if you should go for a plus or straight size, but I'm just happy to have the option. I have found that plus sizes typically have more room in the hips, bust and arms (which makes sense). So, if these are areas where you typically need more room, go with plus if you have the option. I find it best to compare the size charts and see how they overlap.
@@Kiwibird220 the standardization of pricing means the price of material (and other extra costs) is distributed across sizes. So smaller sizes pay more than their item cost, and bigger pay less. With plus size being a separate line, there's two different averages: one for straight sizes and a different for plus sizes, the later higher, of course. So it's not really people paying extra for plus size, it's people paying the actual price of plus size
Would have been nice to see you lay some of the items on top of each other! Like put the plus size version on the ground and lay the straight size on top to see a difference (and if the difference is the same at the waist vs hips - since plus size is usually curvier)
I think the other reason you get so many requests for reviews of Maurice’s is that it exists in a lot of Midwest towns where the only other clothing options are at Walmart 🤷🏻♀️ This has been the case in most small Iowa towns I’ve lived in. I was actually a little sad that so many of these pieces were disappointing because access to cute, well-made clothing is definitely limited in towns like mine. And with a body like mine, ordering online can be such a disaster. As much as I wish I could order two of everything to get the right fit, that doesn’t work for my budget. Love your videos and you so much- just hope this gives a little more insight on why people request this specific store! 💛
Maurice’s assistant manager here 👋🏻 the 0 size is pretty much the same as a size xl although, the plus sizes will run a bit wider for your bust. Our fitting rooms are all open in my districts stores! Not sure about other districts. Our company was sold to a UK brand last year so I have noticed the quality has changed a bit. We have had issues with Wrong-sizingon items. Not happy about it.
I think the plus size versions take into account the proportion of a plus size body more than just sizing up in straight sizing. Larger bootie, so longer skirt. Larger arms, so looser sleeves.
Carrie, weighing in on pricing, stores need to charge a premium on items that don't turn over in sales more readily. It is not always about the actual physical components of the piece, but also the overhead involved :)
I just can’t shake the feel that Maurices clothes are Karen clothes (even tho a lot of them are cute/younger) because girl when I worked there I dealt with SOOO many Karens 🤣 And re to the plus size vs straight size, I had a VERY difficult time trying to explain to customers the difference between the 0X and the XL because...girl they’re almost the same especially when we’re talking about non-jean items. I do think the clothes are supposed to be cut a little differently to accommodate for larger bust/hips as the line is called “Curvy.” And oh god their high waisted things are a mid rise at best for me 😬😬 I always wore my American Eagles to work whilst selling Maurices jeans oop lol
Oh, I love Maurices, but agree that for some reason the store feels like it is for Karens! Also, thank you for pointing out that some of the straight sizing (xl) and plus sizing (0x) overlap, which I feel like is actually a good thing. Carrie talks about the gap between the two ranges that leave a lot of people out, but when the ranges overlap it means that those of us in that mid-range have more options and can pick which cut fits our body best.
Some are open in my area. They just clean it right after and don't allow those items to go back on the floor after they've been worn. They have to basically quarantine the clothes
Love Maurices, I can wear their XXL (sometimes XL), and also their 1x. I would say their straight sizing L is 12-14, XL is 16-18, XXL is 20. Plus sizing 0x is 12W-14W (14/16 straight), 1x is 16W-18W (18-20 straight), 2x 20W-22W (22-24 straight)
The W indicates that it is cut wider in the hips and sometimes smaller in the waist as well. For those with a curvier shape. Also, even though a xl/xxl in straight sizes can be the same size as a 0x/1x in plus. ..the pattern is different. The smallest through the largest size in standard sizing will be built off of the same pattern. Just cut smaller or larger. The plus size will (or should) have a completely different pattern to fit a plus size person. Which is the reason the arms were longer in your xl than in your 0x. The arms should increase in length from the 0x to the 1x to the 3x and so on.
It usually cost more in the plus sizes because they produce less, it’s a different pattern from the “straight” sized ones, and obviously it’s more material. So in reality it makes sense why they would charge more.. because it cost more to make. They are just trying to make the same revenue either way. I don’t think they are trying to “target” anyone with upping the price a few dollars. I pay more for petite clothes in some places, so it’s the same principle. Different pattern, less made= more expensive to produce.
As a Maurices expert (shopping there for twenty years), the waist goes in more on the 0x/1x vs XL and XXL. The 0x/1x has a little more fabric in the hips and waist. The XL/XXL tend to be a good inch or two longer. I'm a 16W and tend to wear a XL or XXL in their tops and 16W long in their pants. I need that extra length in the shirts being 5'10! Maurices have long served rural girls like me before we had the internet. (I'm 35.) I'd love to have you actually talk to a true plus size gal on your channel. 'cause girl you're straight sized, not plus sized. You had the body I had when I was like 25. Love the channel! P.S. I just tried on ten pairs of jeggings in 16W when they had their $19 jeggings sale earlier this week. I cannot even get a 16 up over my hips. This proves that there is a HUGE difference between straight size and plus size!
Here we go. Another person telling us mid size girls what size we are. "You're too small to be plus size, blah blah blah..." She literally tried on a pair of 14W jeans, and they fit. So guess what, that's plus sized! She doesn't need a "true plus size" girl on her channel. It's hard enough to find sizes that work as a woman, but us mid size girls have an even harder time because we have to figure out additionally which size spectrum we fit in too. Which is why she made this video. Im sure you meant it as a compliment as your comment seems nice, but its ever so frustrating to be mid size and not quite be accepted by either standard size women or plus size women as part of their sizing group.
I remember a couple years ago after I had my first baby I went out to buy shorts and I remember I kept needing a bigger size I went up 3 sizes still not fitting me and I left almost crying. How I wish I had videos like these with Carrie telling me sizing up or down is just a number❤
I love seeing the comparisons! I also haaaate how they charge more for plus sizes and I loathe people saying how it’s fair since it takes more fabric. Well, with that logic, then s, m, l, etc should all be different prices too. But you’d never get straight size girls being okay with that. It’s unfortunate that plus size women have so few choices at the mall, that we have to settle for higher prices.
You should try express jeans! I am about the same size as you, and they are the best fitting jeans I have ever tried. Super high rise too! I would love to see your opinion.
I’m a clothing buyer for my business and unfortunately a lot of vendors charge more for plus sizes because they are usually cut from a totally different pattern which makes them more expensive. Not saying that it’s right, but it starts all the way back at the clothing manufactures and trickles down to the retail sector.
Why would a size 0 person pay the same as a size 16. They basically use double if not more material. It’s like asking to pay the same for a small and large fry or drink. (And I am no where near a size 0 my self)
I would love to see you do this video with Old Navy! Majority of my wardrobe is from there and I also fall under the mid-size body size so I would love to hear your thoughts on their sizing.
You are so good at this. It’s kind of funny that we watch other people try on clothes, but whenever I watch your videos I can’t help but think how useful they are and how helpful it is that you do this. Not everyone is as natural, candid, and comfortable to watch. It doesn’t seem like you try too hard, yet I can tell you’ve thought about what/how viewers like your content. Don’t stop✨
Very random, but every time I hear the name ‘maurices’ I hear “crazy old Maurice!!” From Beauty and the beast in my head 😂🤦🏽♀️ anyway! Sorry! Love the vids Carrie, watched you for years now, I feel we have grown up into adulthood together, in a way! 🤘🏽✌🏽✌🏽 big love xx
17:40 This is my pet peeve with ALL sizing. It’s like the clothing makers just increase all the measurements instead of thinking about which should be increased. Scaling up the pocket sizes is a perfect example of this. It’s unacceptable really but we just don’t have alternatives because everyone seems to do it this way.
If be rich if I had a dollar for every time when trying on clothes I said do they think we grow a size taller every time we go up a size in clothing? Or do they just think every big person is 7 foot tall?
Thank you for doing this video Carrie. I've been a big fan of Maurices for many years now and shop there frequently. I've dabbled a little in the plus size, mostly to get things slightly oversized, but it's been a lot of hit or misses. Watching you try things on and show the difference between the two worlds was validating that sizing is always a crap shoot, even if the company offers a good range. The one thing I've noticed most in plus sizes here is that they are cut for more of an hourglass figure, so curvy. As someone who is 5' 1" and busty but small on the bottom, it's hard to wear plus size things because I can't fill out the pants. It's a weird world out there in fashion. Keep on keeping on girl! Please make more of these videos
Kancan is a brand of its own that can be purchased other places as well as small boutiques. They always run 1 to 2 sizes larger. I have several pairs and once I figured out my sizing in them I absolutely love them.
absolutely love this video idea and really enjoyed watching! maybe if you choose to do it again you could hold the items up together (like hold the skirts by both waistbands eg.) so we can see how big the difference between the two actually is! :)
The problem with jeans is that the sizing is so random sometimes, even if the label says the jeans are the same size. This happened more often than not with Old Navy jeans for me.
As a Chemical Engineer and textile fanatic, I can say this about the higher prices on plus sizes 1. Plus size clothing are made to acommodate more “curves” so they have more darts, which means higher production costs 2. Plus sizes need more fabric, so more material=higher cost 3. Plus sizes manufactures charge more, so it reflects on the final price, plus regular sizes can be manufactured at asia, which is cheaper, but there too fes plus size manufactures there, so company search out united states manufacturers, adding up to the final price.
When I fluctuated between a 12-14 it was really confusing! I’d never know what size would fit and which places. Glad you focused on this niche! I’m now more of 18-20, but I can still see how these videos are super helpful!
OMG that Express sweater is the Cutest on you! I really enjoy these comparisons videos. I don’t know why, but I do! Maybe it’s the breakdown of being being like, hey, this costs more and there’s nothing more to it, wtf!?!?! Or maybe it’s the crazy world of women’s clothes where sizes are made up and body weight doesn’t matter (bad whose line joke😆), but I get a lot out of it, even though we happen to wear completely different size. 🤷♀️ Thanks for being awesome and continuing to show women of all ages that every size is beautiful and numbers have little meaning in size, and No value on beauty. 💜
Old Maurices employee here! 0 converts to an XL it’s the same size. A 1 converts to a XXL. They tend to change the cut slightly, they are currently trying to get the plus and regular section to similar prices, that’s why the prices are weird at like 39.50 or whatever. I agree plus sizes shouldn’t be priced more. But you look super cute I own the First jeans you’re wearing and they fight me large too!
i wonder if you could look into why plus sizes for same products are more. i'm assuming that in theory, they're more fabric than the straight range, but i'd love to know if there's another reason!
I used to think it was because of more fabric too but now I don't. An xl has way more material than an xs in straight sizes but they're always the same price.
I would assume it’s to account for more fabric. I think they just have to have a cutoff somewhere. Just like kids clothes generally are less expensive than adults. To charge different amounts for each individual size would just be ridiculous.
Hey girl !! Maurice’s has their own line of jeans. Kankan jeans are a brand of their own. They are my favourite brand actually !! I have to size down 2 sizes also , they run big!!
I love kancan jeans from Maurices. They're actually the only jeans I can wear! I do notice that I wear different sizes depending on the wash (typically 33 in dark wash and 32 in light/medium wash)
Maurices is literally my favorite store ever! Their sizing is definitely different. When I shop online I have to check the size chart because in tops I can wear anywhere from a M-0X. (For reference I wear a 40F bra 😳) pants are something else too, but I love them. Anything with a super stretch a large fits, anything else a 31 or a 14w fits like a glove! I've noticed their plus sizes are similar like xl to 0x, but it seems its cut slightly differently to give just a little more wiggle room. Luckily the store near me is allowing try ons in store, so it makes shopping easier!
I was super bored and super hungry and didn’t want to watch another Hallmark Christmas movie (which I love ) and didn’t want to venture out in the rain to go get something to eat, so I just decided to take a nap and I was literally dreaming of trying on clothes in a dressing room of a store. I was so happy in my dream to be shopping and trying things on but then so sad when I woke up to know that it was just a dream and I’m still hungry. Anywaysss I always enjoy your videos and just listening to you talk.
Thank you for highlighting the price difference in plus. It's so frustrating and is one of the reasons I stopped shopping at maurices-- partly the price thing and partly the in-store selection (moot during covid). It just feels like they shove plus to a small corner in the back and expect us to thank them by paying more.
Love that you’re comparing the sizing, I feel like it would been helpful as well to put a shoot of the plus and straight size, size charts to compare measurements too!
Really interesting! I used to shop at Maurice's a lot (still do, just not as much) and I'm also kind of an "in-betweener," so I can fit into the biggest standard sizes and the first couple of plus sizes. I feel like when I usually try on standard sizes (not just at Maurice's but everywhere) I have the most trouble with the arms being tight in weird places, a lot like the plaid dress.
It would be really interesting if you talked to the store manager, or even someone at the corporate level if you could reach them, to find out about their sizing philosophy. I'd like to know why there are size overlaps and why the plus size clothing is more expensive (obviously more fabric in the large sizes, etc, but maybe there are also less apparent reasons).
My style is very kindergarten teacher-esque so I used to love this store 😂 However, I’m a size 10 and never realized they charge more for plus size. No thanks hunnay! I’ll be taking my money elsewhere. That’s so messed up. Thank you for pointing this out!!
I love these kinds of video. The difference between plus and regular is in the small details. For example: I am fatter than you, but pretty short. So if I buy a size 16 sweater in regular sizes , the sleeves would be way too long. In plus size they don't extend the sleeves and legs so much (if not, only the tallest woman in the world would have legs long enough to wear a size 22 jeans that were scaled up in straight sizes), you know what I mean? They usually also give more room in the waist and sleeves and many times they put stretchy panels in sleeves or backs of dresses or jackets. They may also place back pockets differently, etc. There are many small things that make plus sizes, it is not just scaling up straight sizes. Thanks for the awesome video!
It is SO nice hearing someone talk about Maurices...I used to shop there a lot in college because I'm also midsized, our small town had one lol, and I knew they'd have my size...but it would make me angry whenever I would find a cute shirt and I could buy a smaller size 0x (labeled plus) and it would cost more than the same shirt in the standard size section XXL...but the XXL was too large on me so I'd size down to a 0x but pay more...essentially shaming me with money for daring to venture in the plus size. Obviously a lot of that was my own insecurities shining through at the time, but also mostly Maurice's being shady af. Okay, rant over

I was curious about the sizing myself! I'm generally an XL in the core sizing and I like 1X in plus, if the XL is not available. I took a look at the size charts a week or so ago because I was curious about the differences. My finding is that 0X fits between a Large and XL, then 1X is slightly roomier. However, the proportions are different. I'm glad I wasn't the only one wondering that! It bums me out too that the plus sizes cost more then core.

I am a part time assistant manager. All stores in my district have opened dressing rooms as well. And I totally agree!
Looking on the size chart, an XL is 16-18 so that's why they are bigger.
RIP dressing room days 🥺
Ikr!
But at the same time, I know reviewing and filming in the dressing room made a lot of youtubers anxious so idk. Silver lining i suppose!
That cardigan you’re wearing is so cute!!
Her style is honestly the best! I’m jealous lolz
@@ninkiminjaj2835 me too!! 90% of the clothes I buy are inspired by her lol
Her whole outfit is super cute, that sweater is my unicorn piece! Totally need this color!!!!!!
I think she got it at old navy! Recently!
@@jessp6202 thank you!! I need to have it
The W indicates that it is cut wider in the hips and sometimes smaller in the waist as well.
I used to work at Maurices and I loved that we had clothes for all ages. I loved seeing so many leave with confidence.
Same, I still work there and I love my job
Doing my dishes and I feel like it vibes you to upload. Every time I wash my dishes you upload. Lol. I should do my dishes more often.
Lmao love thsi
Lol I was literally doing the dishes watching lol
I am also doing dishes watching 😂
😂😂😂
I remember a couple years ago after I had my first baby I went out to buy shorts and I remember I kept needing a bigger size I went up 3 sizes still not fitting me and I left almost crying. How I wish I had videos like these with Carrie telling me sizing up or down is just a number❤
kankan is actually it’s own jean company that is now sold at maurices!! they’re kinda expensive but I’d love to see how kankan fits carrie
@@mynameisasecret2033 but then why would a person buying large pay the same as someone paying for a small, same logic, still flawed
Don’t stop✨
Maurice’s is one of my favorite stores! They have the cutest clothes and I love how size-inclusive they are. Definitely an underrated brand/store!
No joke. Me too!!! 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂 me too!!
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
“LeFou I’m afraid I’ve been thinking?”
That flannel dress is adorable on you!
You have to get Aeries version of faux leather leggings! So good! I got a pair from express and they didnt compare to Aeries version
I love Maurices! Literally my whole wardrobe is from there.
absolutely love this video idea and really enjoyed watching! maybe if you choose to do it again you could hold the items up together (like hold the skirts by both waistbands eg.) so we can see how big the difference between the two actually is! :)
The problem with jeans is that the sizing is so random sometimes, even if the label says the jeans are the same size. This happened more often than not with Old Navy jeans for me.
I haven't even watched more then two seconds of this video but your hair color and style is to DIE for omg it looks so good!!
As a Chemical Engineer and textile fanatic, I can say this about the higher prices on plus sizes
1. Plus size clothing are made to acommodate more “curves” so they have more darts, which means higher production costs
2. Plus sizes need more fabric, so more material=higher cost
3. Plus sizes manufactures charge more, so it reflects on the final price, plus regular sizes can be manufactured at asia, which is cheaper, but there too fes plus size manufactures there, so company search out united states manufacturers, adding up to the final price.
There’s too few*
When I fluctuated between a 12-14 it was really confusing! I’d never know what size would fit and which places. Glad you focused on this niche! I’m now more of 18-20, but I can still see how these videos are super helpful!
Who’s so excited for 400k?! I’ve been here since like 120k. Carries come so far. ❣️
Thanks for being awesome and continuing to show women of all ages that every size is beautiful and numbers have little meaning in size, and No value on beauty. 💜
omg i love ur hair styled like this!!
All their high rise Jeggings with the repreeve are my absolute favorite. I have never invested in jeans or Jeggings the way I have these.
Okay this outfit and your headband and hair 😍 you are rocking all of it!!
KanCan is their own brand separate from maurices! I love them I get them at Buckle or a lot of local boutiques carry them!
My favorite brand! I also love that they carry short, regular, and long lengths. I'm 5'2" but got that booty and hips, so Maurices always saves me.
I am living for your hair in this video!! I haven’t straightened my hair in months but you’re really making me want to 😂🙌🏻
I love kancan jeans from Maurices. They're actually the only jeans I can wear! I do notice that I wear different sizes depending on the wash (typically 33 in dark wash and 32 in light/medium wash)
I love this - I think it speaks so much to size discrepancies and also, personal taste and different body types!
That last outfit with the skirt and the sweater makes you look like you belong in a Christmas Hallmark movie 💓 you’re such a beauty Carrie!!
Glad to see you feature a brand that has sizes over 16-18. I thought the first jeans you tried were super cute if they had been the right size
Make more of these videos Carrie😃 I am a midsized girl and loved this!!!
I've loved their high waisted jeggings! I'm a teacher, so cute but comfortable is important, and the jeggings nail that.
I love watching your videos and especially all of your wonderful body-positivity and acceptance reminders!!!
The person who is in charge of Maurices website took a course on how to name items on Aliexpress/ shein/ wish website. 🤣
could you try a more straight on angle? it’s hard to judge the fit and stuff when the camera is pointed above you
I couldn't stop admiring your hair in this video, it looks so shiny and soft :)
Omg I just have to say you look so beautiful today!♥️♥️♥️
Loved this video. Would love for you to do more comparisons in straight vs plus .. or straight vs curvy!! Both are so helpful as I’m a curvy girl.. 😊
You’re so beautiful! Thank you for always being so real in your videos, it’s so refreshing💕
The baby doll dress looks great on you!
Loved seeing the comparisons between the sizes in this video Carrie, super helpful 💕
I’m happy you did this video!! I love mauries!
My style is very kindergarten teacher-esque so I used to love this store 😂 However, I’m a size 10 and never realized they charge more for plus size. No thanks hunnay! I’ll be taking my money elsewhere. That’s so messed up. Thank you for pointing this out!!
Omg you’re sooo close to 400k I’m so happy for you!
You look so cute in this video! I love the straight hair and the headband! 😍
Omg I bought that same plaid dress a couple weeks ago! Gonna wear it on Christmas 😊🎄
Your straight hair is everrryyyything! And your make up is on point 👏🏻👏🏻You are so beautiful girl! I’m digging this video 😁🥰
Omg you’re about to hit 400k!!
Okay, rant over
FIRST OF ALL, your outfit is so cute and you look beautiful. SECOND, thank you for this, as a fellow mid size lady it’s so hard to figure out sizing. You are so helpful and thoughtful. You’ve conversed (why did I pick this word?😂) with me a couple times on Instagram and you are literally THE SWEETEST. I love supporting you and your videos are my favorite. Basically keep doing you. I’m obsessed.
I love your whole look in this video, Carrie! So pretty! Also, kind of random, but I love the clicking sound you add when you bring up the pictures. As always, such a good video! 💛
Love your hair and headband in this video!
I only have Maurics and JC Pennies where I live so thank you!!
Loving this so much!! Thanks for being such an inspiration for so many of us! I enjoy your channel so much!
Hey Sis! I just bought a flammel from Maurice's yesterday and my god it is the softest thing ever.
Love this! You are just a beacon of positivity and light 😍
i own last year’s version of that maurices skirt and it’s an interesting story. last year, i was mainly in a size 10. i tried on the 10 and it was SO BIG!!! i had to end up buying a size 6. now, i’m more of a size 12 and it still fits me. i just thought that was absolutely crazy
you should do a series where you shop for your subscribers! like we give you money/budget and we give you like a style we’re going for and then you shop for us and we send pics or video of us wearing the outfit with our feedback!!! I love your videos and I love your style! I wish I could dress like you but I never know what exactly to buy. So it would be so cool if you shopped for me!!! Just a thought!
That cute red cardigan is $20 now!
I’m obsessed with your hair! It’s so pretty!!
i wear straight size clothing but I really like you and your videos! I have some biker shorts for exercising at home that are almost half of my regular biker shorts (in length) and I have an other pair that its in the middle, so i don't use them to prevent chafing so i cant tell you if wearing shorter biker shorts will allow you to wear shorter skirts.. I'm just trying to help and I hope I did 🥰🥰 you are the best 💕💕💕
Could you try Kohl’s clothes??
That plaid dress was so cute on you!
So my mom used to own a small clothing store and MSRP for plus size clothing was always a little more than the straight sized version. My mom is plus sized and said "F that" and averaged the two MSRPs for the item and sold both the straight sized and plus sized versions for the same price.
That’s amazing!
Ok I can’t be the only one who’s wants to see a Carrie at tj maxx vlog/haul!
Love the plaid dress on you! I think the straight size fits you better,
