    I'll walk you step by step through how to choose appropriate images from free stock sites, manipulate those images in free vector editing software, and how to put it all together in a free design tool.
    IMPORTANT NOTE: Always, always, ALWAYS ensure that you read and adhere to the image licence of any image you intend to use in your work-especially for commercial purposes-and properly attribute free stock imagery according to its license.
    Some free imagery, including imagery from Vecteezy.com, has limits as to how many copies of a book you can sell before you need to purchase an extended licence, so be aware of the limitations of a free licence before using one, and be prepared to purchase an extended licence if you exceed those limitations. If a book that you've used free imagery to create generates over 50 sales (the limit for Vecteezy's free image licence), you can now afford to purchase the extended licence.

    IMPORTANT: Always read and adhere to the individual image licence that accompanies the image you'd like to use in your work. Be aware that some licences place restrictions on commercial usage (for example, Vecteezy allows up to 50 copies of a work to be sold before you're required to purchase an extended licence). Please see this video's description for further information, as well as links to Vecteezy's image licence, and a link to my video on proper image attribution.

      First, you have a great speaking voice and your diction and grammar make you easy to listen to so you don't need to be an "entertainer." Second this is a great tutorial, and other commenters have great ideas too. As most, I'm concerned about licensing. You mentioned that after 50 sold copies, Vecteezy requires an image license. I infer then, that I would have to track my number of sales. Is there license requirement per image or a general license allowing use of ANY image in unlimited numbers? I haven't read their agreement yet so my questions might be premature. Anyway, thanks!

    As a graphic designer and illustrator, while it is technically legal, I find it very shady that you promote to take some artists' art and taking them for your self and make money out of their talent. Sure you give some credit somewhere in the back cover or something like that. Let's face it, those artists probably didn't know that their artwork could be used this easy to make a coloring book. I find it somewhat dishonest to put together a coloring book with no art of your own that the artist is not getting direct compensation. It is not the same as using some clipart in a presentation or something like that to enhance the presentation. This is directly using someone's art as the main product.
    I find this unethical and if the counter is that other people do it, that cements how shady this is.
    I am looking at doing an art & design channel for kids. My intent is to teach kids how to draw and I will produce coloring books too, but all the art, every single vector and line will be of my own creativity and skill.

    • @drpentecost
      @drpentecost 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would only be dishonest if the creator of the content stipulated how their content should and shouldn't be used. If the creator knowingly put their work on a site which allows it to be used freely then she hasn't done anything wrong if she uses some creativity in it's use. • @tashastorme
      @tashastorme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a 'graphic designer and illustrator', surely you are aware that the contributors of the original designs earn a passive income for allowing the site to release their images for free use. In fact this is a great way for artists to earn money while working on other projects. The sites terms and licensing agreements are very straight forward and as an artist, the free use of your designs in this way are exactly what you know them to be before you submit your work.

I realise that the colours on the covers look very matt after publishing on KDP even though i select the Glossy option while the actual design is very nice, neat, clean and lively. Thanks

    Repurposing images that claim to be free is highly unethical and dangerous.
    You can't get images from pixabay and say "hey it was copyright free" because you never know if the author didn't steal that image themselves. You can't give away something for free if you don't have the legal right to do so.
    Put in the actual work and make your own colouring book. If you go the "repurposing" route, even if 1 of those images are stolen, you will end up with copyright fines, tarnishing your reputation as a thief and ruin your career.

      Thanks, Megan! You can do either, just ensure you mention how many illustrations you're including, and if they're double-sided or not, as both are common and customers will want to know. Because the paper KDP uses isn't particularly thick, many customers prefer the pages not be double-sided, otherwise markers can bleed through.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're welcome! I normally include attribution in very small type on the same page as my copyright information. If the licence on each image is the same you'll only need to include it once. Ensure you always open the image licence and take note of exactly how they require it to be attributed in the final document.

    Rachel, thank you very much! This was a very good tutorial and you DID put a comment bubble in explaining about acknowledgements. I think for those who tend to search for the negative in a good thing, that it is important to remember that some artists don't want to deal with the retail end of their business and are satisfied to get smaller commissions from great platforms like Vecteezy, based on volume. I think what you have provided here is a wonderful way to get started in this fun low content format. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences and doing all that research for us. Nice walkthrough, very helpful for beginners! Please let people know that most sites like (and including) vecteezy require attribution when using free vectors for commercial purposes. So you need to put somewhere in your book that you used their stuff. The free license is also limited to 50 copies for printed pieces. So if you sell more than 50 books you’re required to pay for a pro license.

    Wow super helpful and I love the way you articulate things - clear and precise! You could be a journalist or a tv presenter ;). After watching this a big doubt came up because normally how I design covers for KDP is to upload png images into Canva as I want them to be without background and then putting them into cover format and pdf. What is the risk of doing that and how can I eliminate it (is it possible without having background?). Thank you in advance. Big appreciation for your work!!

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jenn! Thanks for the compliment! PNGs are okay to use as long as they are at least 300dpi, which is the minimum resolution required to print at high quality. Because most PNGs are used digitally rather than for print, they are usually only 72 ppi, which puts a printed version at risk of looking pixelated.
      To check an image's resolution, if you're on a PC, right click the image file and choose "Properties", go to the "Details" tab, and then look to ensure the resolution is at least 300. If it's not, it likely won't print well. If it is, just ensure you don't enlarge the image when you place it in your file, as this will reduce the resolution.
      If you're on a Mac, right click the image file and choose "Get Info" and look for resolution.
      Hope that helps!
