I just recently lost 120 lbs. It was after being sick for two years, and the result of a medication change. I lost it very fast (which is NOT the way to do it) I'm paying off medical bills, have no clothes that fit, and no money to buy clothes and shoes ( I even lost weight in my feet). What can I do? I can sew. I sorted out clothes I could make over, and sold the ones I couldn't. With that money, I bought underwear, socks, and a clearance priced pair of boots, plus notions for my sewing projects. I had one coat I could get through the winter with. I discovered thrift stores where I could pick up an outfit for less than $20. A couple of people remarked on my outfit, and when they found out I made it, they hired me to sew for them (one was a stranger in a thrift store) I knew if I went into certain stores I would get stuck spending money I didn't want to spend, because I looked good in everything, and that's very seductive. Even Walmart. So I would put together an order for items I could only find at Walmart and ordered it online (shipping is free over $35) once a month. I was able to pay off my bills early, developed a small side hustle, and my weight, while it's gone up slightly, for the most part has stabilized. Develop a plan and implement it. If it's too hard, re-think it and try again. Do what you can -- this is not a punishment, but a way to survive. Build in rewards -- I was able to buy a jean jacket at Old Navy cheaper than a thrift store cause I made their sale work for me - it was my birthday gift to me (and I needed something to wear while my coat was getting cleaned) Be wise, be kind, be resourceful!
I am sad for people who are a few short years from retirement and realize they can't retire or have to sell their home. Keeping up with the Jones' has been a Hallmark of our American culture for so long. I am grateful for people like you who are trying to educate others on how to stop this debt cycle.
Great advice. I feel thankful for growing up working poor. No credit cards, little money, no reason to shop. I'm not in that circumsance anymore and It's hard not to spend when you find an amazing deal at the grocery store-when that happens, the extras go to our church food pantry. Thankfully, we are debt free and that's one less stressor.
I do think planning ahead for those frugal purchases (clearance cereal as an example) is the best way to combat this. Having a budget line for sales and stock ups make a difference.
I learnt to enjoy vacations im my home country as much as vacations aboard. No need to keep up with everybody else. The goal of vacations is for me now to visit new places, new museums, new zoos and one new restaurant. So many experiences, that will be memorized.
I have a cousin who was left a widow young, with a very comfortable pile of insurance and a widow's pension. I can understand buying a house. However, she bought new furniture, and then bought new furniture AGAIN, and *AGAIN*. She bought most of it new, at some of the better stores in town. She then started in on a pile of DIY upgrades that were completely unnecessary, as the house when she bought it was in excellent repair. It took her years to figure out that she wasn’t just doing retail therapy, but extreme retail therapy! She was always worried about her son's education. The money she spent on furniture alone would have sent him to a private K-12, then college.
I was budget conscience for everything, incl me but not for my kids. When I started to be a senior the law changed and I'm going through paperwork slowly. I also have a Handicap. My grown up married kids totally ignored me. That means I'm plodding away on my own. I grew up with the idea help where you can. No one knows when you'll need help. There have been times I saw if the person could afford to give back the money and I told them not to give back the money. Complete strangers and correspondences 🎉have helped in my life but not my two sons. So make sure as they say on planes to put on yourself what's necessary so you can then help others. 🎉 GREECE.
One thing I have no problem with at all, is telling someone "NO" when they want me to travel to an exotic location for their wedding. I kindly state that if they would be willing to pay my air fare, hotel, food, airport long term parking, taxis, pet sitter, and consider my presence their gift, I'm happy to attend.
Yes, we have been manipulated by society (comparison shopping through advertising) and by the finance industry (easy credit for credit cards, car loans, mortgages, etc.) to grease the wheels of capitalism. You know the economy depends on consumerism, right? 😉 I actually find myself buying more watching TH-cam videos about interior decor just to follow the rules of design (balance, contrast, texture, etc.) more than anything else. I love decor and although I have decluttered my entire house (through other TH-cam videos) I still needed to "elevate my space" (KB looking at you!) with decor.
I absolutely get that this country is run on consumerism and I'm ok with buying. I'm not ok with buying just to buy and going into debt to do it. Then waking up the morning of your 68th birthday realizing you've bought so much that you have no money to retire. Save, then spend. On a budget (and support as much small business as you can afford).
I do pretty good as long as I stay off Amazon. My weakness! I made a financial blunder a few months ago and am working to recover from it. So now I stay away from Amazon until that blunder is solved. $3,000 home improvement that I didn’t need but love. Anyway, it so hard to stay off Amazon!
When Amazon puts you into their Prime program and steals $13 a month from you even after repeated calls and proof you didn't apply for it? I had to go to my bank and close my account due to fraudulent charges from Amazon. That was the only way I could get them to stop charging me. I buy nothing from them -- they are the devils spawn!
Debt. I feel guilty because I needed a loan to repair my furnace. Rediculous because it was to cover a basic need! I'm obsessed with paying it off rapidly, even though it's interest free for a long time. I actually hate shopping in stores these days. I feel personally being attacked by all the marketing trickery as you mentioned.
As you were going through the list, I paused the video to figure out what other activities I can substitute for the dopamine and emotional energy I get from visiting my local thrift stores. I asked myself what activity I could substitute for that same feeling. I found that can be substituted thrifting with a favorite creative activity that I love. And, some of the items I create can be sold to make extra money. It's a matter of stopping one habit and creating a different one in its place.
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies Thank you for addressing the emotional aspects regarding spending. It's a big part of recognizing the games we play with our money.
Your videos hit so many points in my money situations thank you I try to stay on budget but there are times I want things and the guilt after stinks but I keep trying to focus on the big picture debt free..😊
The only real reason I don't have money is because I can't find a job. Just got another rejection. Difficult to interview when you don't have the money to take your interview suit to the public laundry.
Guilty of I deserve this or things will be better if we go on a vacation if I bring someone over for dinner it might help our family situation this needs to stop pause
This needs a bigger explanation than I can really give in a video comment. I suggest calling your county office of adult and family services to see if they can get you assistance for housing, food, heat, etc. There are a lot of resources out there for you. I wish you well.
People with A.D.D. often struggle with impulse control. They are actually self-medicating to compensate for a depletion of dopamine. It's actually VERY hard for many neurodivergent people to cope in our modern "instant gratification world. Unfortunately, expecting them to do ALL the things to avoid overspending is incredibly challenging.♥️🇨🇦

Great to have added life coaching to your financial practice. This was a helpful video as I work towards staying on budget!

We do the best we can. When we know better, we do better. Give yourself some grace on this one and just do a bit better going forward. You got this!
Very honest and truthful information. Thank you!

Very well explained. I am definitely an emotional spender!

Thats what I'm going through
I love this video ❤
I agree
How about the person who feels guilty about spending …. even though she has the money and needs the product.? ❤
I needed to see this. Overspending trips me up all the time. Thank you for essentially putting a 🥾 up my 🍑. I needed it.
LOL! Any time 😊

I don't feel sorry for Jennifer. Classic example of living beyond one's means.
Well, I don't feel sorry but I do feel empathy. Someplace along the way, they did not learn what they needed to learn. Its not an easy lesson.
