I have ADHD and am already very susceptible to impulse purchases, but when I go shopping hungry my already-scanty willpower is likely to get blown out of the water. I've started keeping shelf-stable, high-protein snacks in the trunk of my car (prepackaged snack nuts and protein bars are my go-to "car snacks") and if I feel even a little bit peckish, I will get a snack out of the trunk, sit in the grocery store parking lot and eat something before I go inside. It's made a big difference in my grocery bills.
A money-saver I’ve discovered is to use the store’s website to compare prices storewide. My store sometimes has an item where you expect it and a cheaper version in a different section, and I wouldn’t have noticed without searching the website. Lemon juice is in the produce section, but a larger bottle is in the juice section for half the price. Onion seasoning is in the seasoning section, but a cheaper version is in the Mexican food aisle. Even if I don’t order the item online, I can compare prices AND see what aisle it’s on, so I know exactly where to find it.
Fantastic advice! I don't understand why you don't have more subscribers and views! I just love listening to your videos while cooking and cleaning. The more you hear all the tips, the more it becomes habit.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I truly appreciate you. I’ve only been doing TH-cam consistently for about a year and have seen some really nice growth. I’m still learning with every video. Tell all your friends 😂
I've watched a few of your "very helpful" videos, but this one has me on-the-floor-laughing. I've made all 13 of these grocery mistakes and then some. The biggest mistake I've ever made was spending over 50 dollars at Dollar Tree (back when everything was a dollar.) Realized when I got home that I didn't need ANY of that stuff.
I follow most of your rules. I need to start using the store's online shopping option. I would add that if you are shopping for someone who insists on an expensive item, make them buy it, or at least bring up its cost each time. I am now (mostly) giving up alcohol for budget reasons. I've recently started making my husband and adult son buy their own alcohol, hoping they realize how much they are spending on it, and making them more aware of how much they consume. If they ask me to buy it, I do, but I no longer send them a text from the beer or booze aisles.
Too funny Sara, yup have done several of those. Zero budget, no meal plan, shopped hungry, am brand loyal, impulsive, lured by an end cap, forgot coupons, didn’t check ad flyer. However, I try not to doddle. Another great video Sara no wonder I don’t have money. Thanks…waving to you from Michigan.
Some helpful things I do is buy the veggies and fruits on sale. They can be added to any meal plan. I check all the markdown/dented bins. I also use a separate keychain for all the store cards so I easily get to them. I never shop on the busiest days--thats when I'll get frustrated and grab stuff just to get out quicker!! We have favorite meals and when I see ingredients for our faves that are on sale I always buy them knowing they will be used.
Hi Sara, yes I'd love to please see a vlog style video about a typical grocery and errand shopping day, I've been curious about this and what you do/recommend. Thank you!
If I shopped online and used delivery or pickup, our grocery budget would be significantly higher. I know it eould because we've done pickup and while convenient, we don't like missing deals. Our Fred Meyer always has unadvertised discounted food throughout the grocery department (every Kroger does this.) Discounted items are kept with regular priced stock (not only in a section marked "reduced" and are different every day, of course.) They have an additional rack in the produce department where whole fruits and vegetables are sold for $1.00 per bag. The produce can be all the same in each bag, or mixed. I never buy full priced chicken, ground turkey, pork, beef and produce. If I used grocery pickup or delivery I would never see those items, and spend more than necessary. We use online carts to get totals of items from our list. If the totals are too high, we can adjust before we go in the store. I print the cart so I can check unit prices of like items that didn't show up in the online inventory, and check for lower prices at other dtores. (The full in-store inventory is not online, except for Costco.) We write the price of each item on the list (a notebook) as we put it in the cart to double check. We never use Instacart because the convenience costs too much so I use "same day Costco" to get prices and subtract $30.00 (for instacart) but always spend less than our estimate. We live in a small town and all of our grocery stores are about 5-7 minutes from each other - Safeway, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Walmart, Grocery Outlet, Costco and a state-wide chain, Sherms, and we shop them all. We don't shop Walmart or Grocery Outlet often because their prices usually aren't very good.
Instead of buying pork chops, I look for when they have the whole, boneless pork loin on sale. Sometimes the store will even cut it for you. Of course, you can also use part of it as a pork roast. I don't buy beef cubes or strips for stir fry. Instead, I buy London broil or roasts when they're on sale and cut them up. If you can get it cheap enough and you have a meat grinder, you can also make your own ground beef. You can also make your own ground chicken and turkey.
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies the only reason I didn't grind up the last London broil I got was because I didn't have time. I've been wanting to try it for awhile now. And, it was cheaper than the ground beef! But, I have made a stew-froze what I couldn't eat and beef stroganoff, which also got frozen. With all the work I doing inside and outside, having those meals is a big help.
Chicken thighs at that price are WAY cheaper than here in Australia. That said, you can still eat well here if you shop smart. One little thing that I now do is to keep a written list of all the veggies I have in the fridge so I remember to use up the more perishable stuff first. It's really helped reduce waste and those nasty surprises. I'm very visual, so the list has really worked for me. Snacks like chips have gotten really expensive here too but I can't resist the occasional bag when they're half price. $50 on snacks though?! Oh my!! Cheers from Oz!

Once a month we go to dollar tree, our state doesn't have tax on groceries. I take 20.00 and we each get to pick 10 snacks, that has to last us for the month. No more until next month, takes care of the problem. You could set a limit to each person getting a certain amount of their personal snack that they keep to themselves in a tote. Makes their snacks their own, everyone is happy. Online shopping doesn't work for me, I have to spend 30.00 and I miss the discontinued items, marked down meat specials and our kroger has sales for just their store. They have carts in the isle that is loaded down with weird stuff that I know I can use, they also have discounted shelves I don't usually find much on these and don't forget the red bag veggies and fruit. Those red bags are about the only time we get fresh veggies and fruit anymore.
I just don’t shop with my husband as I often add things to the list even if I’ve done a meal plan and done a shopping list. My hubby never strays from the shopping list : though he did once get me fem fresh instead of creme fraiche!! But it rarely happens x
I shop at Safeway even though many people say its more expensive. I disagree. Using the app is very helpful for sale and coupons. Plus the reward points can be used for free food. Frys has rewards but can only use for gas and we get Costco gas. I have gotten everything from cases of water, paper towels, organic flour and much more for free just by waiting for my rewards to pile up. I do go down all the aisles when I have time because I look for clearance items my family uses. I try to take advantage of senior day also. Thanks for all the great videos and tips.
I agree. I have done the math, and frequently, you get more food for the money. The sales are great. I always use the phone app and mostly shop for what is on sale and plan my meals around that. The food is good quality, the stores are clean and the customer service are very helpful. I found this out by going to other stores, seeing the filth, no customer service, dented cans etc. Back to Safeway I went. Shop the sales!
The Safeways I’ve seen always have the worst produce, and the best toilet paper (my opinion ) is Frys own Kroger brand which of course, can’t buy in a Safeway.
I've struggled with Ibotta. I have had it for a couple of years but don't really get to use it much since I mostly shop online. Pay close attention to the products and number of items required to get your money back that is usually where I mess up. Maybe Frozen Pennies can help you get it figure out, or someone else here could help???
Keep playing around with it. Open the App and make sure you check everything you might be purchasing before you scan the receipt. I have attached my Walmart credit card as payment so it automatically gives me money back on the checked items. I still have a lot to learn.

This is a great idea!
Like your new haircut it's very attractive.
Thanks! 😃
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks - and thanks for watching!
YES PLEASE, do it very soon
I just don’t shop with my husband as I often add things to the list even if I’ve done a meal plan and done a shopping list. My hubby never strays from the shopping list : though he did once get me fem fresh instead of creme fraiche!! But it rarely happens x
I love that you know who does that job better! My husbands a snacker and would not be good at that!
I think some of the "more expensive" grocery stores have the BEST sales!!
Yes, I want to go with you!!
Yes would like to see vlog.
Great job Girl ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Thanks so much!!! And thanks for watching!!
Great Tips Sara.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Absolutely 😊
Just downloaded Ibotta but cant figure it out :(
I've struggled with Ibotta.
Hello I’m new😊wanted advice no interest credit card , for 21 months to 3:31 consolidate some of my high interest accounts. Good or not? Thank you so much❤
Do you mean balance transfers? If so, beware of hefty fees.
Thats how i shop hehe
On line 🤔😒
Who can afford Starbucks?!
I use a calculator when I food shop.
Such a smart idea!!!
My 3 year old daughter always gets a toy or snacks or both when we go to any store. She make sure she get it
Is this a good thing or a mistake?
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies a mistake. waste of money . She won’t play with toy or eat snacks once we reach home
This is creating trouble for the child for the future. Gimme, gimme all the time at such a young age, what will she want as a teenager. Will you be able to afford it? Think. Ask the Lord for guidance to rear a balanced human being.
Yes please? Do a DIL!❤
Thanks for the vote! Im on it!
