One of the things I kept when my husband died was his winter coat. It fits me and is a better coat than the one I had, as well as being warmer.

I hear you on the shoe thing. I’m 33 and because I wore cheap shoes most of my life I’m now paying the price. Even with proper shoes now I’m in so much pain by the end of the day. I also worked physically demanding jobs in my 20s and sometimes poor conditions which also contributed to my foot health problems. Taking care of our health is so important.

During pre Christmas sales, I buy things I need for my home. If I need new cookie sheets, kitchen towels, kitchen gadgets, sheets, etc at a good discount.

I cannot believe the horrendous quality and ungodly price of furniture. I agree. Go to consignment or thrift or second hand stores. I found a beautiful cherry wood Chest. It takes longer but so worth it.

I have been looking for quality clothing items now too. I cook often for the two of us in our toaster oven. I use our full size oven only a couple of times a month and only if I batch. I buy three pairs of walking shoes at a time because I average at least 125 miles a month, they might only last me 18 months, but my feet thank me! Great job!

Most health care facilities in my area will not allow staff to wear croc’s. Many on the job trips, falls, ankle twists and plantar fasciitis led to this stance.

Once my dryer quit working about 18 years ago, I discovered I don't need one. I line dry everything and it saves wear and tear on clothes and a plus is that a stain you miss will not get set in by the dryer. And it saves on electricity. A note, you have reusable misspelled in the captioning in pink.

Something I do is to buy good quality pants for my boys in October when the weather starts to turn. They wear them all winter and come spring the knees are worn- so I turn them into shorts for the summer. We have mild winters here in southern Nevada so the fabric of the pants works for both winter and summer.
And I’ve more recently discovered the amazing deals on meats at Smiths (Kroger’s), so now that’s where we shop for chunks of meat. At home I separate the chunk into smaller bags & freeze them. If there’s a bone in the meat, I boil it with leftover veggie bits I keep in the freezer so we have broth, getting one more meal out of it.
Sometimes we use that broth to cook rice, adding nutrients to the rice.

I bought these $3 clearance red tennis shoes from Walmart 3 years ago. Omg ! They are the most comfy shoes I’ve ever worn. I use them while power walking on my treadmill and walking outside. They’re still holding together. Now I wish I bought 2-3 more pairs at the time.
But my favorite non tennis shoes that are super comfy are Clark’s and Borns. Worth the price

My family decided a few years ago that the children had enough toys etc and that they would rather I bought an experience each year. For several years now I have funded the yearly pantomime followed by a meal out. There will be 10 of us this year at the local theatre and next year I am hoping it will be a London west end theatre trip if I can save enough pennies.

I have to laugh about your first suggestion- a woollen coat. I purchased a lovely woollen coat for $120 AUS, which was expensive in the day. That was 40 years ago. It is still lovely, but when I wore it on a particularly cold day two weeks ago, I thought maybe it was time to splurge on a new coat.

I am definitely with you on the shoes. I learned the hard way! I buy loss leader food to save money. I didn't need a ham or turkey for Thanksgiving but took advantage of it. I live alone and have a chest freezer so other than hurricane season, I stock up. My niece and her family are coming into town this weekend for her dad's funeral and she was relieved not to have to worry about food. They are staying with me and I cooked 3 meals tonight from my freezer plus defrosted that ham for sandwiches whenever someone gets hungry during the day. I also batch cook and portion the meals for myself (lunch & dinners) as well as bringing a few meals to my dad when I see him a couple of times a month. Believe it or not, I've used a knock off pressure cooker for years with no issues but recently scored an almost new Instapot at Goodwill for $20!

Good quality shoes are an excellent idea, however while you are perusing the Crocs offerings, take a look in the mirror and be honest about what you see. Is your back killing you? Good shoes will help but losing those extra pounds will go a long way.
Walking on level ground exerts 1 1/2 times your weight in pressure on your knees. So if you are 200 lbs your knees are getting 300#’s of pressure. Walking on an incline is beneficial in some ways but it also increases the pressure on your knees. My source didn’t include that. Going up and down stairs? 2-3X your weight in pressure so 200#’s? 400-600 lbs of pressure! Feeling the pain yet? When you squat to tie shoes or stoop down to pick something up ? 4-5X your weight in pressure. So 800-1000 lbs. There are dogs that have that much pressure in their bite!! So yeah, good shoes. But good bye to extra weight will do a whole lot more! And your knees will thank you. Especially when you don’t have to have a knee replacement.

Both of my coats are vintage and classic with no tears and little wear. One of them my MIL was throwing away… the other I got in a thrift store for ten dollars. We opted, instead of a bunch of Christmas gifts, anniversary gifts, and birthday gifts for the two of us… a trip to Washington DC this summer. We are empty nesters so when my oven broke on thanksgiving and I had to improvise cooking an entire thanksgiving dinner for 13 people and managed to do it, I realized that I can do the same for two with just my toaster oven/air fryer, roaster, and crock pot… so the oven hasn’t been replaced yet. I do show second hand for clothes, but I buy shoes new… bad experience once with thrifted shoes, but I buy quality shoes that last and I get them on sale and I stick with basic colors that will go with my capsule wardrobe.. which is my tip. I have three capsule wardrobes… spring/summer, fall, and then I add sweaters and such for winter. I only replace what it work out and everything matches everything so it gets worn. I do not have a bunch of clothing

Consider furniture covers to protect furniture. Duvets are easier to wash than comforters and the sleeping bag I use in the winters. Mattress toppers can make an old futon, bed much more comfy. Plastic mattress covers to protect from dist embedding.
Solutions to stretch out the furniture and bedding department.

I got a great deal on a high quality white couch at a garage sale 20 yrs ago. ($15!) Didn't even think about how messy my dog and I get! I keep it neatly covered in off white 'velvet' blankets...the cheap $10-15 ones. EZ to wash the blankets ever 10 days-2 weeks. Always looks pristine. Same sale. I got a huge off white dresser for $5 and a nice side chair. I now shop almost exclusively at garage sales or FB marketplace.

High quality footwear is a must in our house, even for footwear worn in the house. My son bought me really good "orthopedic" slippers two years ago for Christmas ... they have wonderful arch support, are warm and are a long ways from being worn out. In the spring, for my birthday he bought me a pair of Adidas slides; they also have a really good arch support and will last a long. For yard work I wear Crocs ... perfect! My feet, knees and back are happy!

Last summer I replaced my water heater & furnace with an on-demand natural gas boiler. My house had a 90 year old boiler original to the house and it worked GREAT and most likely would’ve kept working to infinity. However, I was finally convinced to replace it and my monthly heating bill is literally half of what it was. It WAS expensive, but it is paying for itself much faster than I expected.

Speaking of preserving furniture, you know those lace doilies our grandmothers put on the backs of chairs? They’re called antimacassars. Gentlemen during the late 19th century wore a hair oil called Macassar. These lovely pieces of lace protected the upholstery from the oil (not to mention infrequently washed dirty hair).

I bought these things at IKEA called Turkish bath towels for camping because they are super thin and dry fast. Why would you need a terry cloth fabric? You could use anything to dry off with. Mens flannel shirts sewn together in big swares like a quilt (just using the backs) might work. Or womens terry cloth bath robes.

Most times I find all I need at the thrift store. Occasionally I’ll buy a better coat or pair of shoes new tho. Found me a really cool, long red wool CK coat at Burlington for $65. I love it. Makes me feel like Red Riding Hood (it has an attached hood). 😂😂
Shoes are hit or miss tho while “scavenging.” Sometimes I get lucky. Sometimes I don’t. lol. Got lucky recently with a good pair of Nike running shoes and some Sorel boots. In good shape and just my size.
Ha ha. “Expert?” Idk. I do a lot of these and I agree. I would put myself in the “not too shabby” category perhaps. Lol. I think I DO at least have a pretty good built in “deal sensor” tho.

I'm a single, do not own a toaster oven. Instead, I have a table top oven with a rotiserie function, a 2 pd roast, will last me a long time. Tend to use it more in the summer, cook once, eat cold when it is too hot. It is deep enough for a small pizza, Walmart.

Do a electronic and appliance review. I need a security system or a good baby monitor with the monitor that is easy to see on my tablet. Also need a good tablet. I am not that computer smart.

Ya know what? You are absolutely right. I was tired while editing this and I made a few mistakes. I am a one person business and its all me doing all the things. Thanks for the feedback. This statement sounded rude but I'm sure it wasn't meant to be so. Also, FYI - spell check doesn't work in editing software.

@@KerryJames-l6z Here's my thought on being offended (and it's an interesting take). Most of the time, we can't hear the person when words are typed, so we only hear them in our heads. This allows us to make up the tone to suit our mood. it might sound rude to us but maybe it's not intended to be. The benefit of the doubt! And also, I don't get offended - I refuse to give anyone that much control over what I'm feeling. There will be no mean-spirited comments allowed - that is very different. This person is not wrong. I found 2 errors - I need to double- or triple-check these. I appreciate you coming to my defense more than you know - so thank you for that.
