I really admire all you have been doing the last few years. You've mentioned several times that you want your family to be on a strong financial footing if anything were to happen to you. Sounds like every move you make, including liquidating the storefront business and selling that property (which must surely be worth way more than when you started) is geared toward that, and I applaud you for it. Sounds like you will be clearing the path for amazing things moving forward, with all financial ends tied up. That's financial freedom, right there. Keep going!

There are lots of antique stores closing and going to online sales or just getting booths in antique malls. Keeping that store open must have been quite expensive with taxes, electricity, etc. Try not to make yourself sick getting everything ready for auction. If you end up with lots of things still at the end, then just store them and then later have TH-cam live sales like some people are doing. I think your fans would like that!

It seems like only yesterday you were having Hans, Josh, and many others, help you put this shop together….if it had been a couple of decades of buying and selling in that shop, I would be right there with you. But it seems that you barely got the new addition finished, and now you are leaving. I hope the future adventures of finding great things, or doing something that brings out the same excitement, come your way. I really thought you were in this shop for the long haul. But as we say goodbye to the past, we trudge on to the future! I will miss this quaint store. Even if I never had set foot into it. (I wanted to very badly!) As a friend once told me…Brighter days are ahead!

    • @phangirlable

After watching this channel for years it's clear there is a pattern of moving from project to project every couple of months/every year. There needs to be a steady supply of excitement and a finished project can't provide that.

The dog in the picture is a Russian Wolfhound. When I think of the hours of labor you put into creating your dream store, it makes my head spin. To dismantle it now is rather shocking to many, but I think most understand the need for home life. I guess it's the suddenness of this change that has caught so many off guard.

W hen we first met Alex he had left retail because he felt tied down to being stuck indoors when he really wanted adventures. I think when he started to try to plan to visit his sister and new brother he felt the responsibility of keeping the store open when a new busy season was just getting started was too much. He needs to be able to take trips, do house clean outs and renovations. And he is just so good at taking us along he can continue to support his channel, his business, and his family without a physical building. We can always have meet ups, go to car shows, have jam sessions wherever he visits.

I had accumulated a lot of stuff in the 24 years after I left my hometown, a lot of it heavy books and paper which had to be moved via freight, because even storage rent is high in NYC.
Then I basically realized I was no longer enjoying my life in NYC, so I quit my job without notice, cleaned out my office during the weekend, then set myself a deadline of getting everything moved and settled by the end of the month.
One month later all I had was my camping backpack (perfect luggage when you travel by subway), and I took the train home, using the long travel time for reflection and relaxation.
You’ve got two big moves, but you’ve done this many times before, and you’ve got help.
Definitely take a break afterwards, just to acclimatize to your new reality, and to deal with any loose ends that may linger.
I do hope you’ll make a video of the store later this summer, so we can meet the new owners and tenants, and see the new life of the store as well!

If you think about it, in your TH-cam video's, the store is just a backdrop (for most of us viewers who would never be able to visit). The searching for items and box openings are the meat and potatoes of your channel and the reduction in overhead should lift quite a load off your shoulders. I think you're making a smart move and once you've finished the exhausting task of getting ready for the auction and the move to the new house, you'll get a breather and be able to decide how you want to proceed. Since you're always so innovative, I'm looking forward to watching your journey continue.

Well Alex I can understand what you are going through. I started by selling in a booth at antique malls then toy shows, collectible show, swap meets and flea markets as well as selling online. When the pandemic hit I started selling more online but not a lot as no one knew when the pandemic would end. When it got to almost a year I focused hard on selling online and did ok. The last few months seems things have been selling much better. I had a chance to do some toy shows but was very short notice then got laid up for 2 months. I am now doing what you are doing getting rid of everything including my own collections as I plan to move out of the country hopefully by June. I don't have as much stuff as you do but still a lot of things to deal with. I have taken 3 loads to auction and the first batch of stuff is just coming up. I am doing my last toy show this coming weekend. At the end of April whatever I have left will all be going to auction. Most won't get auctioned until probably August but that is fine it will just mean every month I will get hopefully a nice payout. Good luck with your sales

I was a bit sad when Alex seemed to stop his hoarded house projects. I joined when Hans and Co were on every episode and altho I enjoyed watching the store expanding it's actually the part I'm least interested in. Who are we l, the viewers from the comfort of our homes, to say what is right for Alex and family? Maybe he IS burnt out, maybe his beautiful new home with its huge garage and vintage cars is what he is really thinking about? Why shouldn't he work from home and ENJOY it while he can?? My goodness, just building and adding to our home over the past 20+ years has aged my h and I immensely. We're fed up with going out to work and all the expense involved with that so I perfectly understand Alex. No opening and closing times and related constraints. A nice lump sum of money for all his hard work that he can channel elsewhere...what's not to like?! Best of luck to you and your family Alex. Xx

Once the store is cleared out, the world is your oyster. I assume from looking at the listing you made a good amount of profit on the building that you have a lot of time to figure it all out. Good luck on the next part of your journey and I know what to expect from you from here on out ... the unexpected

While my wife and I think it's awesome that you realize that this chapter of running the store needs to close for you, while watching this video we both wondered aloud the same question... Because this decision to sell is seemingly so quick, did the people renting the space for ice cream know in advance that you were selling? I so hope so! Because otherwise they were probably banking on your well established antique business and getting some foot traffic from you for their ice cream business.

They r both too young 2 retire.
We all loved that little antique store and we the subscribers are the ones that got them 2 where they are financially.

@@lavendercrowl5695 yes I also hope he will clarify the situation about the ice cream shop. I don't think he will probably sell much from his personal collection at home since he is so overwhelmed with so much from the store to sell. And I don't think it's the subscribers that got them to where they are financially, although it's an added Benny, Alex is a very hard working entrepreneur that will do quite well with or without the TH-cam channel. I look forward to their next chapter! And may God be with them and guide and protect them every step of the way!

Yes, he is quite the businessman. But don't 4get, Utube put him on the map world wide fast, especially in the past 2 yrs! Subscribers bought things from him because he showed it in tv. How many if us wld b looking up that store 4 a collectable or antique? Guess u really don't know how many thousands of dollars he gets from Utube a month. I really don't believe he just all of a sudden decided 2 sell unless he has another big plan or inherited a lump some of money. Don't 4get we still don't know all what was in those bank deposit boxes. He also doesn't get attached 2 material possessions. Sure, u can't take it with you but yr children could benefit down the rd if he had hung on 2 some antiques or that gold bar example.

@@lavendercrowl5695 He said he was still going to buy and sell antiques. Many businesses run online only nowadays. Did you spend much time in his store? Like, it was your hangout and that's why you're upset? I imagine it's been a tough few years for everyone in the retail business!

6:27 You had what looks like the miniature steam engine powered tools. Your last auction had a bunch of accessory tools / toys with zero mention ever. I was sickened when I saw them sell. Are these similiar?

Alex gets more done in a day than some people do in a week! Alex, If you have any say in who the auctioneers are for this big sale, try to get the older gentlemen from Kastners because the guy that did the most recent sale went too fast to give the bidders a chance to bid.

Wow, that sure looks like a lot of work. When you sell the store will it be on the condition that the ice cream store will still be leased from the new owners? Or are you just selling the antique store portion and keeping the other part with the ice cream parlor to lease to them?
