I worked insurance claims in Houston during a number of flood events. Way back then, BMWs had air intakes low down to draw cool air into the engine and so were particularly susceptible to high water. We used to say that their drivers assumed that since they could walk on water, they could drive on it…

I would never attempt to cross anything over 2 feet of water however. Turn around and find a diversion. After going through any floods I try and dry my breaks out before carrying on.
It doesnt help if pick up for air i take is low, whcih it is in case of BMWs. Subarus are example of cars that all have very high mounted air inlet and airbox. Water doesn’t compress so easily (!), so something has to give (ie break)

Worked with a guy that went through a puddle with his wife's 2 week old BMW and it buggered the engine, BMW admitted there was a design flaw with that engine but only offered him a reconditioned engine when as I said the car was 2 weeks old. Needless to say he and his wife no longer buy BMW's.
It is, modern electrical connections are IP rated against water for a certain time and depth. The bumper level air intake is the main problem causing hydrolock scrapping the engine. Internally in the cabine the water leaks in from a number of places, from the driving controls to the cabin air intake but this is much slower.
The last one is definitely the best. “Bye car, was nice knowing you”… Absolutely dead inside. The lights are on, but everybody left a long long time ago.

This almost happened to me in the US, FL. There was a flash flood from rain at night, couldn't see anything and ended up in knee high water. My dodge charger ended up getting me through and survived with no issues. Air intake must be in a different location

When we had our first 4wd Club instruction day the question was asked. :When you are faced with a flooded river crossing what is the first thing you do?" There were many answers but the correct one was "Find the nearest bridge" A 4wd is not a boat nor is it a submarine...... Even a 4wd needs to have all the fluids drained and replaced after a deep river crossing... the hot diffs and gearboxes (when they get drowned in deep water) cool instantly and the air in them also contracts sucking water into all the seals/bearings/fluids Find a bridge and use it (from a river crossing 4wd club member that has been in a river deep enough to reach the door handles on the upriver side...and lucky enough to get out with the engine still running ...as it did for years after....)
Uh, l agree the safest thing to do is use a bridge, but if a diff or engine draws water through its gaskets, there's something wrong with the gaskets, period.
@kwaynr1301 agreed; classic example - the Alvis Stalwart 6 wheeled amphibious lorry used a few years back by the British army. 6 wheel drive + 2 propellers. There's video's of these being driven straight off a bank into a river (no ramp). Totally waterproof and no problem with any of the drive systems.
IMO it's because they believe the myth of superior German engineering in relation to cars. The customer reliability surveys show that it's a myth. And putting lots of chrome on a car and making the car overpriced doesn't make it superior.
BMWs are cheaply made but it doesn't mean they were designed to go through deep water. Just some cars are if they get snorkel option. People bashed communist cars for bad hangling back in the day, but they had lifted suspensions, skidplates, high intakes etc. to deal with terrible road conditions. Car design is always a tradeoff. If it's good on motorway it won't be good on destroyed road and vice versa.

A peace of advice, If you ever had to go through a water pool on the road drive slowly so the water won’t go forcefully through the air intake.

Even a 4wd needs to have all the fluids drained and replaced after a deep river crossing...
the hot diffs and gearboxes (when they get drowned in deep water) cool instantly
and the air in them also contracts sucking water into all the seals/bearings/fluids
Find a bridge and use it
(from a river crossing 4wd club member that has been in a river deep enough to reach the door handles on the upriver side...and lucky enough to get out with the engine still running ...as it did for years after....)
Uh, l agree the safest thing to do is use a bridge, but if a diff or engine draws water through its gaskets, there's something wrong with the gaskets, period.
@kwaynr1301 agreed; classic example - the Alvis Stalwart 6 wheeled amphibious lorry used a few years back by the British army. 6 wheel drive + 2 propellers. There's video's of these being driven straight off a bank into a river (no ramp). Totally waterproof and no problem with any of the drive systems.

IMO it's because they believe the myth of superior German engineering in relation to cars. The customer reliability surveys show that it's a myth. And putting lots of chrome on a car and making the car overpriced doesn't make it superior.

BMWs are cheaply made but it doesn't mean they were designed to go through deep water. Just some cars are if they get snorkel option. People bashed communist cars for bad hangling back in the day, but they had lifted suspensions, skidplates, high intakes etc. to deal with terrible road conditions. Car design is always a tradeoff. If it's good on motorway it won't be good on destroyed road and vice versa.
@piotrmalewski8178 Old Soviet Skoda have rear engine and air intake at the highest point. The car can fill with water but still it will drive.
