Rufford Ford's BIGGEST Deep Water Fails!

On the anniversary of the closure of Rufford Ford, I thought I'd upload a compilation of the fails that I captured during my time at the infamous ford of Nottinghamshire. These included various examples of hydrolocked engines, snapped rods, water ingress and massive splashes!

He could have done it. They are heavy enough to avoid floating, the 4wd would help keep traction, and crucially the air intake is quite high up and far back. He just made the schoolboy fording error and went too fast.

I simultaneously feel awful for the poor engines getting hydro locked but at the same time can't look away from the spectacle of carnage.
People should know better of mixing there cars with deep water 😂

I have watched dozens of these videos.. and my mind is blown again and again at how stupid people are. How little they know or care about their car. and the abilities they think their car has.. Even when there are broken down cars in the ford and huge audiences and people with cameras, cheering and jeering, people still drive through.. it never gets old. It is a fascinating insight into human psychology and human or even educational failings.

But it's a normal bell curve distribution, so some half the population has an IQ between 60 and 100. And a lot of those people drive. But it might not just be a question of intelligence. Perhaps some people are just NPC's.. here but not really here. Smart but not really smart. Unable to think critically. Going through the motions. Following the leader.
@@chaosflower4892 I think it's unfair to call people stupid, I would agree it's more a problem of education. Fords are so rare these days that people have no experience of them, plus that rarity means you don't really bother teaching new drivers about them (unless they live near one I guess). You can understand why, on first seeing one, someone would think "well it's part of the road and there's no signs saying it's closed or dangerous so it's probably fine". Another problem is that people don't really read or translate the depth markers. How many people do you think could tell you how high off the road their air intake is to know whether it'll clear the wading depth?
Also most people don't really understand how their car works or the danger that water poses to engines anyway.
I also think fords need more thorough signage, maybe some basic rules on how to handle them. Just "enter slowly", "maintain constant speed", "follow your bow wave", "do not try to restart the engine if it dies" with some simple road-sign diagrams above each.

I feel like hydro-locking should be one of the basic bits of mechanical knowledge needed for a driving test. Maybe not even the why or how but just a basic imperative that if your car dies from a large volume of water, DO NOT immediately try to restart it. Simple lesson that could save a lot of people a lot of money and inconvenience.
Take the spark plugs /glow plugs out and crank it a few times.
If these people just turned the key off the cleanup would be realistic
Or just teach people not to drive through large bodies of water.
The most basic bit is keeping your intake outside of the water and even more basic that it's not a good idea to try to cross with a car not design to do that. But I guess UK people are not the smartest which would explain why UK is a failure after the brexit.
I just dont understand people how can anyone think a bog standard hatchback will just magically be okay when 4x4s struggle i miss this place 😂
It's more about how you approach it. Sure the high-riding 4x4s (especially the ones with snorkels) can pretty much pin it and still be fine, but at least half of these fails are just due to people going too fast or too inconsistent a speed. Enter smoothly, and keep a consistent bow wave ahead of you, and you're generally fine, even in a small hatchback.

Oh man people do dumb shit all the time. I think the issue is people do not know how to drive through floods. I had to talk a young lad through driving through a flood a few weeks ago. Was only a foot deep.
Do the drivers licenses there also come with a boating license ?

Knowing the area as I do, also knowing that there are alternative routes, I can only applaud in gratitude at these fine volunteers entertaining us with their kamikaze efforts and ultimate sacrifice of their cars.
It is surely only a km to go a bit further through Ollerton.

ADVICE : For anyone thinking of driving through the drink in a normal saloon ... then before you destroy your engine (hydrolock) just turn the engine of and push the car through because your going to get wet anyways if your car doesn't make it which is highly likely and I'm sure someone will give you a hand to push your car across and plus you'll be able to start your car at the other side ?
Or....find an alternative route.
Or reverse through.
Still cant get over how the acceleration of that ix at the end caught everyone off guard hahaha

Looks like the B is the D with the plate bolt in the middle holding it on (zoom in). Rather convenient for the driver that it looks like a B when caught by a speed camera.

Even the cars that "recover" will very likely have a bent rod or a stuck valve, even the initial little bit of water that stalls them is enough to give a rod a kink or hammer a valve. Amazes me how many people are _absolutely clueless_ about engines.

Its honesrtly shocking how many people dont know that cars arent waterproof, mainly the engine with hydrolocking. Good job writing off a multi £1000 car that you wont get a payout from, to save a 5 minute journey. Idiots.
A lot of garages are going to be very busy for a few months.
The best of it is that there is a safe detour only 2 miles way.
a lot of these cars will be scrapped or end up at copart..
More than likely scrapped, repairing the engine and all the damaged interior and electrics
will cost more than any insurer will pay for. and only the body panels will be of any use as parts.@@chaosflower4892

Just in case I ever decide to go through three foot of water in a car with the air intake less than three foot off the ground, how much does it cost to repair/replace a hydro locked engine?

Went to a wedding there once, Ford was basically dry though iirc, I didn't realise it got quite that deep.
Correct me if i´m wrong, but basically these engines are toast., costing a fortune to dismantle and refurbish?
Sounds like a connecting rod went bang on the R32. That car will be a write off as the cost to repair would be more than the cost of the car. These people are absolutely brain dead.

I been driving through floods for many years, never had a breakdown, preperation, common sense and drive very slow.
I miss these videos..but I couldn't believe they hooked the tow cable on the engine on the Kia 😅
I'm pretty sure that people think the reason you don't go through water is either:
(a) You won't be able to control the car unless you're REALLY good, or
(b) You'll get water in the electrics and it'll short something out.
They don't seem to realise that the ACTUAL metal parts of the engine will bend and snap because they're trying to compress water which cannot be compressed...

thanks for the pro tip... put in neutral and parking break off when getting towed. some e brakes will auto lock... for your safety.. ? have special unlock button.. add a snorkel. ?

Some of these do gooders are as thick as the idiots that race through the water. The top brackets are only meant to support the weight of the engine when it's lifted out of the car. Dragging an entire car along by it could rip the top of the engine casting off. This is my second favourite Fail Channel next to Ben's.
They could easily raise the road grade and put a large drain through underneath but that is a helly lot of pounds as well as requiring much time and work in preparation and water diversion. A bridge would require double the cost and work. Hope she comes back online but way ,way many auto insurance claims are made at that tributary area.
You're right, it's cost prohibitive. This is a tiny road which carries minimal traffic and only serves a very small community. Also there is an alternate route, albeit a few miles of detour. There simply isn't a justification to spend any money on a solution.

The should have put an LED sign as you approach the ford with the depth in big red digits. Some people don't seem to check the yellow depth gauge.
There is a nice big red sign saying road closed but they drive past it and then discover why the sign was there!
That won't stop them. They did that at Landsend Ford in Charvil, and people at still getting stuck in the drink.

Can i just say last year we had freak flash flooding in bournemouth one night like a proper storm and i was out in my e46 beamer which is a 6 cylinder petrol and there was one road in particular when i was trying to get home that properly flooded up il be honest i ended up with a misfire and one of my headlight bulbs popped but i went through the flood slowly and it made it through "only just"....people think caining it through a flood will work better it just doesn't

We used to go down to engine sheds and sidings for equally free enjoyment but those have all gone. (What about the pigeons on the grandstand roof?)
Unless I was driving a Range Rover type vehicle.. I would not attempt this. But if I had to? I think maybe reversing through slowly may have more success? The water hopefully going down the side and not right up into the engine..
I remember having a fright in denmark when on the wheel of my ship, I could see the duck egg blue bottom. Here one cannot see the bed at all - only the depth marker.
