Body should be 3 / 16 in metal . Get the time on , spark on plugs with gas should go . If out on timing turn it’s 180 degree them it’s on them old 251 or 252 engine. Went them engine are set up right , start pretty easy .
My guess is either the timing is way off or you have some stuck intake valves allowing it to backfire up through the carb. Maybe someone pulled the distributor and didn't put it back in the same position. I would bump the engine over till cyl 1 is at top dead centre and then see if the rotor is pointing at the correct spark plug lead. It almost looks like you are 180 degrees out from where the timing should be. Since this machine is flat head, you won't have to worry about stuck valves hitting the pistons. There will be a cover on the side of the engine that covers the valve stems. You could pull the cover to see if a valve or two is stuck. I am leaning more to an ignition problem though because the engine sounds like it is developing compression which it wouldn't do with a stuck valve. It would be a shame to part this one out if all it needs is a little tweak or two to get it running. As others have said, this series is really making me want one of these old Bombis.
I that a slant 6 old Chrysler motor if so and you get it running good please let me know because I’m about ready to trash one I’ve got in my tree shaker and replace it with a V6 GM or a small V8 GM I’ve put a new carb, new starter new plugs and a new air filter on this thing and it still runs like crap if it sits more than a week. As long as I crank it every day it does ok
@@rollingupmysleeves Thanks for the advice, I may hafto do that I’m so tired of working on it and my John Deere 450E long track dozer great running engine and blade hydraulics but the travel hydraulics lets it travel about 50-100 ft till it slows down to a stop at first it would go nearly 2 hours before it did it as long as you kept going either forward or back without being in a tight place where you had to change directions much and you could throw it in reverse and drive it around a lil bit and it would work in forward for a while. Someone told me that there is a hydraulic filter for the travel hydraulics underneath it would you know about that and another person said it could be a hydraulic line collapsing during use

Is the number 1 cylinder at the right spot on the distributor vs plug wires? It is hard to tell without being there. I'm not sure how many cylinders were backfiring. You can always ground a plug to the head with a screw driver to figure out which one is problematic or just pull of the wire. You might also want to look at the lifters through the side cover to see if there are valves not closing completely. You had compression with your thumb but some might still be leaking a bit.
Check if you have a IND motor! You will see it on the side of the starter next to the top of your alternator! If you do, remember that this motor is way much better than other one available. Timing gears ! No timing chain.
@@rollingupmysleeves there is two different water pumps that are used on those motors. Parts are quite expensive so make sure you do not throw any away. I am located in Northern Quebec and we do have quite a lot of those but nevertheless the parts are expensive.

I would love to work on something like that. It’s too bad you don’t see a lot where I am.

Ryan Winchester I could help you out on that.

Hey thanks Doug - Ill give that a try this week. Thanks!
What a thoughtful answer.
My Dad cut pulp for years and used a j5 with a two cord pulp trailer that they loaded by hand at first and then with a wheeled arch to pull trees out
Very cool!
Sport man is becoming land man and I am very proud. Leave a legacy.
Thanks Jay, I've spend much of my life in the bush - im headed back that way.
That's a cool little cabin you have there. Tour next time?
Yes a cabin tour coming up!

Put an electronic fuel pump on it

the machine that is 55" it's likely an SW54 with JW series track(crosslinks no longer available) tracks should be 14.5" wide
Yes you nailed it.

Timing is out 180 on the distributor
Why do you say 180? Im not a timing guy - jet engines and diesels....
Timings definitely off
That's what I was thinking.
