      Will a 45120 with a 900 grain may not work you have to consider number one it's using the sharps rifle you have to look at the rate of twist if it will stabilize that bullet at 900 grains as I indicated earlier I was told of a gentleman who used the 600 at 20050 feet per second most likely that was out of a 22 inch or a 26-inch Winchester 1886 the standard load from the very very beginning with a 500 g r a i n out of an 1886 Winchester the 405 came later in the trapdoor used by the calvary soldiers in the 19th century 1800 year however Marlon at that time made a 45 85 500 which was chambered in deer rifle in the 1800s as well as the Winchester I'm trying to find an 188645.90 because you can also use 4570 they're both very Kick-Ass rounds and then we have a 4575 Winchester and a 4560

      @@ibtrippn08 I recently acquired a Lee single stage when my uncle passed & my brother refurbishes re-certifies life rafts so has access to hundreds of pounds of pure lead in small taffy like strips as well as already cast .40" lead balls for the ballast & "rope ladder" used to enter the raft from the water. Most are still inside their fabric, not exposed to air & not corroded. I have a .450 bushmaster & .458 socom but ammo is fairly expensive & I've been considering getting the dies & bottom pour machine to take advantage of my situation. However, I was recently told that wheel weights are what you want & not "pure" soft lead. Any advice? Should I scrap the soft lead & just buy factory hardcast & jacketed? I've yet to even shoot the .450 due to lack of "decent" ammo availability, can't find for less than $1.90/rd

    • @ibtrippn08
      @ibtrippn08  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RichardCranium321 I would definitely not scrap the soft lead, or if you plan to I will gladly buy it off of you. If you've never checked out "castboolits.gunloads.com" there you will find all of the information you will need about casting bullets. Plenty of people sell clip on wheel weights or range scrap online, already melted down into ingots on that website as well in the swappin and sellin section. They aren't selling 24/7 but every couple of weeks they pop up. Even better if you can find some linotype, foundry type or mono type which are all pretty hard lead. Depending on what else you can find simply mix that with your pure lead (you will rind ratios to reach estimated hardness on that site) to bring the hardness up a bit. If you're still worried about the hardness then water quenching out of the mold adds a bit, as well as letting the bullets age for 3-4 weeks before you load them. If you plan to powder coat it changes the game a lot, if I am casting subsonic bullets I will just use whatever is in the pot at the time, unconcerned with the hardness. Either way even if you choose not to cast I still recommend reloading for 458 socom, there is such a broad array of projectiles out there.

It did give complete burn with this bullet at 1050fps for a good sub load, in some of my 300 grain testing it was leaving powder in the chamber. I randomly picked up the 2015 a couple years ago and keep trying to find a good use for it, no luck yet. IMR4198 has outperformed it in all of my testing so far, planning to try it in 308 next week.

    I would love to talk to you about these. I dont recall the twist of those Marlins. I have tried the 730 grain Matt's bullet in 458 Lott and having issues with them not stabilizing. I have a 1-14 twist. Using IMR4320 I got them to stabilize somewhat but I'm leaning towards trying a lighter bullet such as the NOE 600 grain. I am a big fan of heavy for caliber bullets.
    What is your alloy you are using?
    Did they keyhole or fly true and what is the twist rate for your gun?
    Be blessed.

      If you go to my videos, the most recent one I tested stabilization at 50 yards and they flew straighter than I expected. I think it's a 1:18 twist barrel I'll have to double check. These bullets are very hard, I didn't realize it at the time but my water quenched clip on wheel weights are testing 20+bhn. For this application that's a waste of hard alloy so new ones are getting cast around 10-12bhn, I haven't had a chance to test them yet.

    If you're getting dents with spray, or any other lube it means the vent hole in your sizer die is blocked. Why are you chamfering the case instead of using the bell die/flaring die since most all straight wall case dies are 3 die sets with the bell die? Just curious.

    • @ibtrippn08
      @ibtrippn08  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I chamfer the cases in addition to using the NOE expanders, similar to the Lyman M die. Chamfering case mouths of brand new brass is a habit I developed out of necessity loading 458 socom. I prefer to expand without "belling" the mouth out like a trumpet to make cases last longer, every once in a while some powder coat scrapes off and this just helps prevent that.

      Too much

    • @timhallas4275
      @timhallas4275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@davidsmith9189 That is positively not true. The barrel length absolutely effects velocity. The only limiting factor in that is the powder charge. If you have a great muzzle flash as the bullet leaves the barrel, that is wasted energy. Add 6 inches to that barrel and muzzle velocity increases. There is an optimal balance between barrel length and powder charge. Faster burning powders serve the short barrel well, but with barrels over 28 inches and bullet weights over 350 grains, fast burning powders do not maintain chamber pressure long enough to fully accelerate the bullet. A slower burning powder allows for more powder to be used, producing a longer burn time and increased muzzle velocity. There is a reason the 45/70 has such a long case. It needs plenty of room to fully ignite the fuel before maximum pressure is reached.

    • @timhallas4275
      @timhallas4275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davidsmith9189 You need to study the laws of acceleration. velocity increases exponentially while force is applied. The last 6 inches of a 24 inch barrel accelerates the bullet as much as the first 18 provided the pressure remains equal.

  • @Photron52
    @Photron52 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A question if you mind or not: Assuming there is no reason to use any noticeable distance between shooter and target since you are measuring the bullet speed, is
    that rather large shot group at such a close range the result of flinching ? My H&R Shikari model 155 weighed less than 6 Lbs and with factory ammo it kicked
    about equal to the 5.75 Lb H&R topper model single shot 12 G using field loads. I considered that to be very moderate. If someone considers that as excessive then perhaps they might buy a 223.

    • @ibtrippn08
      @ibtrippn08  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These loads really don't recoil enough to cause flinching but it very well would cause larger groups. The reason for them in this video is my only concern was putting them over the chronograph. When I do this for numbers only I don't care where they go as long as I get a reading. Once I have run my ladder charges and narrowed down my window to within a half grain that's when I shoot for groups. Thanks for watching!

      using a 500 Gr bullit(or something very close to it) in pure lead. But my rifle has no receiver around the end of the barrel to help with the chamber
      pressure. I also intend to use Pyrodex. The gun would be the H&R Buffalo rifle. Part of the objective is to re-create the original factory load to
      see how they perform. Any thoughts ?

    • @ibtrippn08

      There is a bit of editing mess up in this video that may lead you to believe I did something special. For the powder coating process shown here I coated them clear which is the white powder. However the bullets I ended up loading in this video were previously coated with a different powder. I didn't have to do anything special, it's just one coat of a single powder. It's a topcoat and since I don't put any base down beforehand it lets a lot of the natural lead show through in some areas and coats other areas with blue. I'm 99% sure it's from Prismatic Powders - LP Blue. (PS I'm colorblind, these bullets are blue right? 🤣🤣
