  • Luke Resop is studying to get his PHD at Mississippi State University which is the home of the MSU Deer Lab. In this conversation, Luke and Zach discuss various topics related to deer hunting and deer management. Luke shares his personal background and how he got into studying deer. They also discuss the individuality of deer and how each buck has its own personality and movement patterns. They touch on the difference between facts found through research and hunting lore, as well as the impact moon phase, weather, and hunting pressure have on deer movement. Finally, they explore the timing and duration of the rut and how it can vary depending on location. Luke and Zach also discuss the importance of spending time in the field throughout the whole season and how you may always have a chance to find crazy rut action not matter what month of the season you are hunting. Finally, the idea of bucks being related based on similar antler characteristics is debunked.
    TOPICS INCLUDE:
-Deer are individuals and each buck has its own personality and movement patterns.
-The difference between the peak of rutting activity and the peak of breeding.
-Moon phase and it's impact on deer movement.
    -When is the rut over?
-Antler characteristics are not a reliable indicator of bucks being related.

Thanks for the great podcast and the common sense approach to deer biology! It’s so refreshing to hear common sense when it comes to explaining deer and their habits! Especially when it comes to the rut and the moon!!!

Luke, Is your mom's brother Sturgill Simpson? I think you talk like him too! IMO at least. LOL. Thanks for sharing the great information! My personal observations of hunting the late season in central WI- I have had zero luck at it. Tried a fair amount. Different locations. Habitat. Etc. I am even hunting in a county park this late season that has TONS of sign. I am clearly doing something wrong. I have had quite a bit of success in the early season (Sept).

I think specific to moon phase and weather, Mature buck movement vs Young bucks & does. I doubt it changes a mature guys routine but may well affect the others more.

The info in this video for a wannabe hunter like myself feels like forbidden knowledge. This is awesome. I'm eating it up.

Buck studies, buck bedding location, etc. = one big contradiction.

Great show however you can not throw out multiple same factor observations because it does not happen every time as "Confirmation bias ",It may mean as its a very large sample you di not observe the same action in between those happenings with the same factors. Just saying it makes no sense to throw out something because it repeats less in observed cases . Other external factors outside the phenomenon being watched for could of changed the results .

I definitely agree with the discussion on rut have seen deer here in Washington state act with the characteristic rutting activity from mid october into December for blacktails especially in my area this year seemed to be a long rut

Zach you hit it on the head man. "Usually I'm done by now" . That sentiment is kicking my butt at the moment.

Yeah the main guy with NDA that lives in PA, he was arguing me that science says movement is no different on those days you described. I said 30 years of being in the woods proves science wrong. Just as Luke described, he’s going to hunt after a good front & rain moving through . Bluebird skies, high pressure & deer are everywhere. Kip is his name. Kip, science is not as good as boots on the ground.

Yeah dude I hear ya with that. I think what they forget is that is radiocollar tracking movement. The deer don’t move any farther than they usually do on those days, they just make those movements in daylight versus at night. Which is better for us hunters 👍

What you're describing is anecdotal evidence. Ie: specific to your circumstance and not representative of something as a whole. Science trumps boots on the ground every time.
