Also, In addition to the bigger injury risk talked about in the video, I would also mention here, that pros have Football Boot contracts and ergo don't care about the increased wear and tear on their FG boots, simply because they can switch them after every game. As a regular, who spends money to buy boots, I would strongly recommend from a durability standpoint to avoid playing with FG boots on artificial grounds, as they will destroy your boots much faster...
i think the main difference today is the durability of AG shoes over the FG. But Pros can afford more than one pair of shoes over the season. But for a sunday-league player like me, the best option is AG sole plates so the boots can last longer. hope my oppinion helped.
I suffered a level 3 lateral meniscus damage wearing FG boots on the new turf, reason being when I turned the knee joint twisted very awkwardly because the boots stuck too firmly in the artificial grass. It took me 1 year and half to rehab, now I finally can be back onto the pitch playing, but I'll wear AG boots this time...
Couldn’t play my whole sophomore year because I had a TibFib break caused by an aggressive turn while wearing FG Mercurials on turf. Nothing is worth the risk of injury.
Evan Michel that happened bc the mercurials are all chevron blades which is extremely dangerous on ag but if you have conical you should be fine. I wear tiempo legend 7s w a mix of chevron and conical and it’s absolutely perfect
Pro turfs are also much better maintained, the grass blades are replaced more frequently so it feels "grassier" whereas the turfs you and I play on are probably more bare (visible exposed rubber nuggets)
FG outsoles with bladed studs are foolish on any surface with 'grass' blades *which don't actually tear out of the ground!* Depth and softness of the field turf is beside the point. If the 'grass' can't tear free, then as you pivot and twist a planted foot, any bladed studs on an outsole will continue to grip the 'grass' with increasing tension the further you pivot. This leads to the potential for a situation during intense activity in which your body twists one way, but your leg stays stuck for just long enough to weaken, strain, or tear ligaments. That some pros continue to wear FG on AG doesn't refute the point, it just highlights that many pros are immature young men that are foolishly overconfident in the durability and resilience of their ligaments and joints. Until they shred an ankle or knee. Then suddenly they learn, the hard way. And I don't buy at all that the increased risk of injury is effectively 'only slightly more.' Bull. Crap. The harder you train and play, the _more_ you train and play, the more those ligaments are being strained. It's an attritional effect. Then one day your ligament tears from a seemingly normal movement, and you think you just got unlucky. No.
Matt, this is a terrible idea. AG boots must be worn by everyone playing on AG fields. Just because pros do it, doesn't mean they know better. You can't fight the laws of physics. Just because you can wear FG, doesn't mean you should. Proper AG boots have shorter and more flexible studs, soleplate is a bit stiffer to handle the harder surface reducing stud pressure, and all of these things provide proper movement when changing direction, pivoting on your foot, specially when striking the ball. Besides, you wanna be lower on the ground anyways. FG boots on AG fields are too clingy, high off the ground and extremely unsafe. Which is actually detrimental in performance because you're adding stress to your joints, which actually has long term repercussions. It can cause random injuries and tears out of nowhere. Moreover, If your foot is planted and your leg is hit, the boot won't let go of the grass and you'll break something, because it's not extra traction, it's clingy. Specially the bladed stud pattern, that's not even remotely safe. I lost count of how many ACL injuries I've seen in person where the player hurt himself without even being touched by the opponent. Honestly, as a former high performance soccer player (scouted for U21 National Team) that chose school instead of going pro, if you want to extend your career and avoid unnecessary random shit happen to you, use AG boots. I cringe and pray for you every single time I see you wearing FG on AG fields. Specially now that you went through such a hard time recovering from an injury. I believe this is not the first time I have given you the advice of wearing proper boots, hopefully you'll read this now. Your boots are a tool and you are a professional. Gerardo Molina so are you saying that you, a person who chose school over football a few years ago, know more than the pros? 😂😂😂 they know what they are doing mate, and the positives outweigh the negatives in this case
Joe G Dude, we're talking about boots and not decision making. Boots are a tool. Science and common sense trumps whatever pros think it's right. Players are creatures of habit and many are superstitious and stubborn as hell, that's why I made a reference to my soccer background, because I understand the environment and mentality. Gerardo Molina but pros don't just use their common sense? They listen to coaches and sport scientists and listen to what would improve their game, they really do think about things like that, they are paid to play football, they wouldn't just do whatever. And like I said, the positives outweigh the negatives
Joe G Honestly, there's a broad spectrum on how pros would use their common sense. Even I was stubborn when it came to boots, I've always preferred leather boots but they're actually really bad when it rains, they get heavy and get softer, making you prone to roll your ankle, but it didn't matter for me since I just liked leather boots. It didn't make me right, just stubborn. Same as pros like FG boots on AG, they don't care if they rip their entire knee off the leg for that extra 0.00001 seconds on a sprint, that might actually be placebo since the extra grip feeling is actually because they're clingy. I'm not alone in this, in fact it's an issue being brought up very often when it comes to safety. Silly risks won't make your career, just break it. Coaches are focused on actual teamwork and the staff is mostly worried about keeping your body healthy from a performance point of view. Even their education background might ignore AG, since major soccer leagues around the world don't even consider AG, so they build the program without that knowledge. In reality, there are no positives to FG boots on AG fields, just a whole lot of risk. If pros think they're getting advantage for that theoretical 0.0001 seconds, they might need to rethink how to play the game. I guess North America (and sometimes England) has that mentality problem where running fast is more important than running right, like anyone could be faster than the ball.

This depends on the grass and how deteroriated it is. Here in italy there are a lot of artificial sinthetic ground and i actually use ag for my training because my pitch is 10 years old and grass is very low but i always take ag and fg to away matches...if the pitch is done by sand and rocks or natural grass i use fg ans if it is artificial i use ag because the most of artificial ground pitches have already 2 years of use and are deteroriated
Great video Matt! I had been wondering about this myself. As some people have pointed out though, I would like to mention the new Nike AG studs (available on the Tiempo VI and VII and the latest Hypervenom, for instance), which are a lot like an FG soleplate, but designed for this new artificial type of grass - best of both worlds.
I think you forgot one other important point; pros are playing on very nice AG fields. In theory AG fields are supposed to mimic a nice natural grass field and therefore FG boots shouldn’t seem out of place on an AG surface, but AG fields wear down after time. After several years of heavy use AG fields get worn down to the point where the blades are really short and the surface is really hard making them look and feel like an astroturf surface. In the league I play one of artificial grass fields is so worn down that wearing TF boots wouldn’t be a bad idea and wearing FG boots could be very dangerous. That’s why I believe that if you’re not playing on a nice brand new AG field you should really invest in some AG boots.
For amateurs I think one thing to consider before choosing your cleat type is that if you dont play frequently as possible or you dont train as much the likelihood with injury using FG boots on this turf is higher especially the pressure it puts on your knees and maybe ankles. So if youre the kind of person who just goes on the pitch once a week or averaging around there you should consider this.
I partially tore my ACL while using AG on turf. Anything can happen, although I was younger and had less experience. I still buy AG shoes but i slip a lot more. AG is meant to make you slip more often rather than to grip and risk injuries. Then you have those flat turf shoes that will almost always make you slip. They offer almost no grip. I had bought a pair and kept slipping on and on. I have 10 years of every week playing indoors and outdoors. I am now rocking FG shoes. Like Matt sais, more risk but much better performance. Surely, one day i might get injured, but i won't hold my skill back by buying a safer AG shoe.
@@Twrkeenntedj83 no, luckily it's a very long waiting period. 4 months no activity (literally just walking and thats it) and then 1 month of physiotherapy for rehab. I've been back to normal since.
I think money is a huge factor here. Pros aren't going to worry about durability issues with boots, they'll just get another pair. I love my ag boots personally, so maybe I'm just biased haha
Despite what the video says, I feel like the extra traction is not worth it with the FG boots. AG boots on AG makes it safer for you and other players on the field. Plus, with AG boots, you will have better control of the ball since the base shape is more flat without large studs. More incentive to do tricks
The extra traction is not worth it because it results in injury. actually that last comment is a very good point. if you are a midfield player that does dragbacks, pullbacks and sometimes driblles foot on top of ball like in futsal, they you want to have a flatter surface. if youre a fullback/winger who pushes the ball to one side and them bombs down the wing, it matters less.
Have you tried the new AG-pro boots from Nike? Very similar to fg but the bottom half of each stud is rubber and the sole plate is thicker to prevent stud oressure
I play on turf most of the time, and use fg boots because it doesn't really affect anything and I don't have to switch boots when I play on regular grass
I wear the Nike Mercurial Vapor XI on turf all the time and I haven't had an issue with my studs overly gripping the artificial grass. I actually find myself slipping more than staying grounded to the AG surface when I take sharp-cuts. However, I always knew that wearing FG boots on AG would damage them more quickly compare to a natural surface (grass). For example, they get badly scuffed from the black material that goes into the turf and the studs become more smooth due to shaving from the AG surface. My Cactus Green Vapor XIs are hideous now lol! After watching a couple of videos about this topic, I'm going to invest in some AGs (serious af after reading the injury scares / tragedies)!!! I'm deadass about it too because my buddy's cousin who played w/ us 2 weeks ago nearly tore his ACL playing in the Nike Mercurial Vapor X and that silo of boot is known to have an aggressive stud pattern. Like I said, I never had an issue playing in AG w/ FG but I did roll my ankle bad while playing on FG which kind of confuses me too. Btw, I'm still recovering from the muscle aches / soreness.
A lot of guys wear Trusox or similar adhesive socks, especially professionals. I used to take the cut sleeves from my team socks and sew them on top of my Trusox. Worked like a charm, looked good, and I didn't need to use sock tape. The only downside is that it makes it very difficult to reuse your Trusox after the season, so maybe just using sock tape is a better option for a lot of players.
I have noticed that whenever I wear turf boots I dont have issues in my knee but whenever I wear FG on turfs, I seem to have trouble extending my knee, taking 1 week to recover from.
U did great on time bro! Honestly all my life I've played on real grass, maybe 2 or 3 times I've played on artificial grass but I've started to see more and more of these pitches in my town 🤔. Awesome video 🔥❤
I highly recommend a pair of AG cleats if you regularly play on turf fields. Like Matt I never thought twice about wearing FG on turf fields and then I fractured my ankle because my studs got caught in the turf. It’s not worth the risk for extra traction and wear/tear on your cleats.
I watched this video last year I kept playing almost every week with my FG, I can tell you that unless you are training like a pro and you have really strong knees you do not want to risk it .. turning on 4G happens instantly so you knee ligaments get damaged over time... buy AG if you arent a pro ... my right knee now always feels weak
I was wearing some fg boots on a ag field, a player slid me so I jumped over him and on the landing I ended up tearing my acl on my left knee. Anyways got surgery, it got infected, so I had to get another surgery. Recovery time was a lot longer, got depressed but eventually I recovered.
I use AG boots for AG fields, before I played in: turfs - worse traction (especially on wet AG) FG boots - too much traction for me because I am heavy for my height (not fat, I work out), I actually injured myself very easily, fingernails hurt!
I somewhat disagree with Matt's logic here, AG boots give you the best possible traction on artificial ground. FG gives you way too much, hence the risk for injury. I have never had less traction than my best but the one time I used FG on an artificial ground, I found my studs would release late. In other words, you are slower if you wear FG on AG even if you have the sensation of more bite, which you do have but the studs do not release the same as on natural surfaces. For your health and performance, wear FG on FG and AG on AG
Part of the problem is that Matt is conflating AG boots with Turf boots. Turf shoes with the small rubber nubs are as he said meant for astro turfs and not the new Field turfs. Weird because the AG boots he showed earlier were actually AG boots albeit with smaller rounder studs.
So you mean to say taht the Nike turf shoes that I bought last week with the small rubber nubs arent for field turf? maybe you should tell Nike then, because they and adidas sure as hell still sell those.
I never knew these all till I am 16..and excuse me sir i don't understand much about the video..so ..please help me which boots I would buy to wear on artificial ground which the grass is not long..
I 100% agree with you. Thanks. Some of my games are on turf and was wondering if I should get AG boots as well. Seemed like a waste to me, but I do understand the extra risk however minimal.
Great video as always! I’ve noticed Nike changing their AG soleplate to have longer studs and more of a FG type pattern than before. Is that in response to the newer turf surfaces in your opinion?
AG boots - no pain FG boots - my knees kill and ankles hurt Pros aren't playing on the same artificial grass most people play on, it's hundreds of times more expensive than your local leisure centre pitch. Also AG boots last way longer! FG boots get fucked up FAST on artificial grass.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea. It's just up to preference in terms of touch on the ball. I play a lot of futsal so I like the AG or Turf Boots because i feel more like I'm playing indoors. Where most people prefer to feel like they are playing "outdoor" when they wear the firm ground cleats on turf if that makes any sense.
Hey Matt. I actually think that nowadays, a lot of professional fields are made out of hybrid grass. Just wondering if you’ve ever played on hybrid grass and what you think about it compared to completely artificial. Thanks for the videos brother
Ive worn ag boots on my highschools turf and i didnt like because i got hurt the first time i used them but then i got FG boots and it feels better because of the turf nuggets
quick question """which type should one prefer while playing on mud field ??"" .....would be thankful if you answer this@Become Elite ,....love your content ...holla from India ..:D
Use FG I did that and played in heavy rainy mud fields in Denmark. The FG is made to stick into the earth so mud fields is just a field without grass, I can say many fields in lower Leauges is mood fields.
Hello I want to buy one boot that would serve two purposes Indoor and turf Is it better to buy indoor boot and also wear them for turf Or buy turf boot and wear them indoor Plus which boot would be best for both purpose
In my experience, I used FG boots on the 3G/turf pitches and felt the studs were too long and i would lose my footing a lot when changing direction. This resulted in breaking fingers and a twisted ankle on two separate occasions. Since switching to AG, I have found changes in direction to be more comfortable and the traction to be ideal, without the sliding out that would happen with the FG boots.
Also, In addition to the bigger injury risk talked about in the video, I would also mention here, that pros have Football Boot contracts and ergo don't care about the increased wear and tear on their FG boots, simply because they can switch them after every game. As a regular, who spends money to buy boots, I would strongly recommend from a durability standpoint to avoid playing with FG boots on artificial grounds, as they will destroy your boots much faster...
and because companies won't allow you to return the FG cleats if you've used them on AG
+Alex Siemian I just do not do it for the health risk
Jonathan Rodriguez i do it because of both i used to get alot of knee pain when playing with fg boots on ag turf

What if you play on both, should you get FG or AG (Mostly on AG)
I would say FG if you play on both. If you're also playing in carpet or turf. I would say AG.
@@xiMeSsi i would go with ag, fg boots gets destroyed on ag grass very easily
Def AG boot because u Can play on both surfaces with AG boot but the traxtion on FG not gonna optimal
@@STICK05 True but they are not going to be so great in wet fast real grass
Get an fg/ag boot
New to the channel. Love this Two Minute Tuesday!
My shins hurt so much from wearing firm ground boots on astro turf
I was wearing some fg boots on a ag field, a player slid me so I jumped over him and on the landing I ended up tearing my acl on my left knee. Anyways got surgery, it got infected, so I had to get another surgery. Recovery time was a lot longer, got depressed but eventually I recovered.
I use AG boots for AG fields, before I played in:
turfs - worse traction (especially on wet AG)
FG boots - too much traction for me because I am heavy for my height (not fat, I work out), I actually injured myself very easily, fingernails hurt!
I use FG Mercurials on AG turf and I keep slipping everytime I stop. I'll dislocate my neck before my ankle. Lol
So do you regret or should I do the same thing?
How did it go in the long run ?
I've always used fg because of the grip. I hated how much I slipped while wearing ag boots
Because New generation AG has become a lot better. Especially fifa quality pro fields.
Couldn't agree more
+brian salty xD
True especially with the new ag-pro boots there is enough grip to perform, but the chance of injury is reduced.
i have a question do i focus on one thing per day like i do shooting for one day or i do little bit of everything?
Jonathan Rodriguez Disagree.I am a winger, I found ag slows me down compared with fg. I prefer fg.
It was helpful thanks!
Holy crap HE DID IT!!
I mean, the indoor shoes that adidas and nike sell aren't for field turf as well, but they sell those still!
And the turf is exactly like you mentioned. Turf grass is tall with small rubber pellets inside the turf. You need the extra traction in my opinion.
Very enlightning for me
Cool video I actually always wondered about this👍
Can you do an update to this video featuring the new ag boots from Nike which have a sole plate and conical studs
You aint Make dat Shot da End tho😮💨💯
Great video as always! I’ve noticed Nike changing their AG soleplate to have longer studs and more of a FG type pattern than before. Is that in response to the newer turf surfaces in your opinion?
Adidas are FG/AG, can be used in both
Lucky Seven
They made a combination of the soleplates?
Yes, you can use the Adidas FG boots on AG and vice versa
SE7 which cleats tho?
The cleats in the video thumbnail are FG/AG.
All of the plastic ones
Thank you! Now i dont need differnt boots!
My high school is getting turf and all I have is fg cleats thanks for the letting me know this
Is there a difference between wearing FG or AG on natural grass fields? Also are there examples of pros who do so?
Anybody else notice how he said 1965 but on the paper it had 1966? 0:37
Great video though :)
Good video become elite
More training videos please.
AG boots - no pain
FG boots - my knees kill and ankles hurt
Pros aren't playing on the same artificial grass most people play on, it's hundreds of times more expensive than your local leisure centre pitch. Also AG boots last way longer! FG boots get fucked up FAST on artificial grass.
I always buy AG boots becasue I play on artificial grass and I play on natural grass(FG) sometimes but AG boots work as well on FG
don't get why you have the timer on
so should i get fg professional boots if i can only afford one pair and i play on both grass and turf?
what do you think of the X.Speedportal boots, are they good for ag fields ?
But what about moulded studs? Wouldn't they offer good traction on ag and safety.
Awesome vid Matt keep doing what you’re doing you’re such an inspiration for so many peopl
Hey Matt, do you ever see yourself playing in the mls during your career?
Makes sense, but this advice could hurt kids making this decision.
Would you say that playing with those tf boots on field turf is a bad idea?
What’s the comparison between USL and New Zealand leagues? Like...skill-wise
quick question """which type should one prefer while playing on mud field ??"" .....would be thankful if you answer this@Become Elite ,....love your content ...holla from India ..:D
Use FG I did that and played in heavy rainy mud fields in Denmark. The FG is made to stick into the earth so mud fields is just a field without grass, I can say many fields in lower Leauges is mood fields.
helpful video.
didn't know you played for STLFC!!
i hate when my shoes get darker, when i have playd on ag grass
I want D.C United to sign you very badly
disgusting
I thought I was the only one who used fg on artificial grass
Ive torn my MCL twice....both times wearing FG boots on 3G. I give up on them. Feel my leg gets too planted on the turn with the FG
What happens if you use sg on astroturf/artificial turf
How often does your fg shoe tear or break
Matt, what has happened to your career? I thought you were playing in the Second Division ? You also told us you had played against Kaká. And now ?
Nuri Abdir USL
Is it worth wearing ag on astroturf
Hello
I want to buy one boot that would serve two purposes
Indoor and turf
Is it better to buy indoor boot and also wear them for turf
Or buy turf boot and wear them indoor
Plus which boot would be best for both purpose
did you feel any pain while playing with fg boots tho? I have a pair of superflys which I really want to play with on ag.
Hey Matt what about soft ground on turf I always see the pros doing it like Ronaldo last year. Have you ever tried it and what’s ur opinion on it.
Is there a problem to play fg on ag? I mean like to get your foot stuck in the grass?
1:49 yes *tears...nah I'll just invest in the safer option
I played on AstroTurf with fg boots it wasn’t that bad I just had a lot of traction.
How’s that footballers physique program coming along? I’m really curious cause I am very interested in doing it
In my experience, I used FG boots on the 3G/turf pitches and felt the studs were too long and i would lose my footing a lot when changing direction. This resulted in breaking fingers and a twisted ankle on two separate occasions. Since switching to AG, I have found changes in direction to be more comfortable and the traction to be ideal, without the sliding out that would happen with the FG boots.
Hey Matt, great video! I emailed you a couple of days ago for the program. Please let me know if you had received it. Thanks!
Brilliant
There's boots with ag/fg is it worth going for them on ag pitches
Do professional football players wear the ACC boots? What’s the best type of football boots to get that all the pros wear? Pls let me know
What about turf shoes?
Solutions if I’m having bad heel/sole pain playing with boots?
