imo memes were originally used for a quick laugh/quick understanding between communities, generally where only people in said community would understand- so with that in mind, memes themselves have died since they're so oversaturated now. e.g. memes making fun of normies is ironic
Imo the cycle has changed a bit, 4 chan has lost itself. So Reddit is the birth now. Nears death when held by Instagram and Snapchat. Dies during the process. 9gag and ifunny literally use the dead body of it. The body is ready for cremation when Facebook just rapes it

At this point memes are a literally integral part of my life, seeing as ever since I’ve been around I have used them on a daily basis. Memes are arguably a better representation of gen Z culture than anything else. Music and art are becoming memes, shows and games are becoming memes. It’s so unique, because gen Z is the first generation to grow up in the meme era. It’s amazing.
Woah woah woah.. You forgot the "I can haz Cheezburger" Cats. They were a huuuge influence on memes. Those predated the Advice animals by years. They were one of the biggest original memes back in the day when flash video and chain emails were dying off. And you forgot Demotivational Posters too. That were memeing the stupid inspiration posters we had up in our schools in the early 2000s.
The reason why internet memes die after becoming too popular are because they're created as inside jokes, and it's no longer funny once everyone's inside on the joke.

You just casually killed the word meme by casually explaining it.
Meme is dead and we have killed it.
And you have just casually killed casually explained by casually explaining the ramifications of casually explained
MEME REVIEW
imo memes were originally used for a quick laugh/quick understanding between communities, generally where only people in said community would understand- so with that in mind, memes themselves have died since they're so oversaturated now.
e.g. memes making fun of normies is ironic
You have an anime profile picture, so your opinion doesn't matter.
6:42 I was waiting for you to make a cotton eye Joe Joke
Fr “for that information ask cotton eye Joe” would be so funny
In the life cycle, you forgot to mention that the meme is specifically killed by iFunny
Imo the cycle has changed a bit, 4 chan has lost itself. So Reddit is the birth now. Nears death when held by Instagram and Snapchat. Dies during the process. 9gag and ifunny literally use the dead body of it. The body is ready for cremation when Facebook just rapes it
Not true
Nah, now Reddit just steals from instagram instead and vice versa.
Silly normie kid, Ifunny used to be where memes started
Ledditor SEETHING that iFunny is objectively superior.
Bruh I didn’t even know it was possible to explain memes
6:40 I was really hoping you would say cotton eyed joe then end the video
I was thinking exactly the same thing lol
glad i wasn't the only one
Thank duck
2MEIRL4MEIRL
Same here ahah
my teacher basically had a whole class where she compared memes to postmodern art
But memes are better because they're intentionally shit for the sake of being funny rather than just being plain old shit.
Dank memes
"These are generally crafted by the minds of 4chan who are one push away from falling off their own edge."
Dank Memes: lasted for a couple of months before reddit made a subreddit for dank memes and watered it down like every other thing that is good ever
@@justgrey3114 dank memes still exist, they're just not referred to as "dank memes" anymore
(And the very people who are creating them on 4chan are also reposting then on reddit before some soylent abuser steals their free internet points)
Leddit moment
as a non-native speaker, what does "fall of their own edge mean"? thank you
@@soybean3423 ive never heard that saying before but i think it means when you cause your own downfall or problem
You left the prosscess of the meme where PewDiePie kills it
If it's reached him, it's already dead
No one can ever replace thatistheplan
He counts as the social media part of the cycle
Does nobody remember Behind the Meme?
PewDiePie is a meme, does that mean he's also a cannibal?
If you're passing memes to someone, you're obviously not going to be passing anything on to them genetically
Lol I'm dying
Raunak Dutta didn’t get that till I read this comment
He intellectually called us virgins. Smh
Exactly! I just left a comment about cheezburger & catspeak memes. Big landmark and the first "mainstream" memes there.
not to mention Star Wars Kid. One of the greatest memes of the 2000s
Came to comment this exact thing. They were hugely popular in that large gap between 2000 and 2007 he left. Poor cats and their terrible spelling
Any post 2010 meme is pretty shite eh
Shhh this is only a comment
1:15 who paused and read it anyway? - t3h PeNgU1N oF d00m!!!
Why wood u sai that?? thaz soooo random!!!!
SumBody toucha my SPORKet
So random lol

I got cancer now.
Comedian: *well crafted joke*
Me: "hm"
*Picture of lord faarquad with the letter E*
Me: CTFU 😂😂😂😂🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️😂😤
Commentary on faarquad with the letter E being a meme is a meme. The old Millhouse is not a meme 4th dimension break.
@Lucas Samus *E*
Ctfu?
The reason why internet memes die after becoming too popular are because they're created as inside jokes, and it's no longer funny once everyone's inside on the joke.
I dont want memes gone :(
Me too
Some of them make it back, like Little Forgotten Meme
Gotta start printing them all!
Establish physical underground memebrary networks...
scleuse We will find The Way eventually
*doesn't mention Prequel Memes*
Me: [visible confusion] It's treason, then. [overwhelming autistic screeching]
Perhaps the archives are incomplete!
Wild Redditor appeared
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
Kylo Bren using multiple prequel memes at once ruins it
LIAR!
I gave this video an *IMAGINARY* point, nice video bro
The writing in your videos is always sharp, witty, quick and dead on!
''The fine minds over at 4chan who are one push away from falling of their own edge.''
True.
When it reaches facebook/instagram you know that the meme its dead, it like the meme purgatory.
El Spooky nah there are some good memes on instagram
When it reaches influencers it has already become oil.
@@herberthoover9095 The good Instagram memes are just right before dying. Not quite unfunny but it will spread it to the mass audience.
@@herberthoover9095 nah instagram its for normies.
El Spooky saying normie is a normie thing to do
How did you not include lolcats? They were 10/10 the biggest meme of 2005
Will H Came here to say that! You can't talk about memes without mentioning icanhascheezburger !
Do you not mean 5/7?
ikr no cat memes?
Because you can't kill that which has no life. Cats are the gods of the internet.
"Lemme just change your genetic code so you can understand this meme"
that coffee mug is actually extremely well done.
Had to pause numerous times to read all the memes. Wasn't worth it.
Yes it was.
Well it's very worth it for me at least
Same. It literally took me 30 minutes plus to watch this video lmao
When I saw the video:
Oh I will just watch an 8 minute video about memes
25 minutes later:
I spent 25 minutes watching the video?
Thank you, now I don’t have to go back and watch again, probably.
Meme History
Too bad this video is garbage. He skims over lots of pre 2011 stuff. lolcats, demotivationals, over 9000 or almost any 4chan memes yet he spends like 2 minutes on different subreddits. Looks it was finally confirmed what we all feared in our hearts. James is just a filthy normie roleplaying something else. Expected more from you James.
It's funny to realize literally half of the comments are pure memes
