People are commenting that Delia is being lazy. This series had a very specific focus and that was how to prepare nutritious family meals quickly and almost effortlessly. Personally, I love to cook and do most things from scratch, but at the same time, I acknowledge that there are many high quality ready-made products that can reduce steps and time in a recipe. No-one should feel ashamed of accepting this. When time is available, I’ll make things myself; when it isn’t (or on occasions when I can’t be bothered), the ‘cheat’ ingredients come in very handy and are very welcome. It’s all about balance and circumstances.
I doubt Delia cooks this way all the time, but like the rest of us, we sometimes need something comforting and very low in effort.

People should remember this was one series In 40 years Of teaching the nation to cook, the series was devised to help those who had no time to at least be able to make there own meals. It's not home cooking as such it's cheating to still put good meals on the table while your in a hurry!

I’m glad some people actually do know what this series was about! Some righteous comments here from people who think that they know what they’re talking about are hilarious. I can kind of see where they are coming from (coming across these clips with no information of the background) but the notion that this “ended Delia’s cookery career” is actually quite amusing. I think it’s the tinned minced lamb that did it…!

I remember when this series cane out people lost their mind that Delia was taking all kinds of shortcuts and using tinned goods , completely missing the point of the series and failing to recognise the improvement in quality of some ready to use ingredients

I think people should actually try the recipe and taste the end product before they slate it. It is actually amazing, and is a real time saver after work. Also very cheap to prepare. The can of meat costs about 99p, the bag of veg is 50p. The leaks are about 30p and the aunt bessie potatoes are about 1.20. This feeds a family of 4. The 500g of fresh lamb is 3 quid alone. Good work delia !

I'd like to see the nutritional differences between a ready made one and one made from scratch.
I would have thought the ready made stuff had more preservatives.

yes, some people always find something negative. Delia has shown hoto cook fresh food before, now she shows how to made things simple.

God, what is this??? I can't believe what happened to my Delia I used to watch almost religiously when I was 17 and her Winter Collection was on TV... I wonder, what's the point of such a programme? Not only the "cheating" part but also the filming style - IMO the point of TV cooking programmes is the possibility to watch the cook and learn techniques from them. Here, Delia just announces "that was cooked for 15 minutes" and "this is already done" and then she just assembles all the half-way-ready products...

Isn't shepherds pie made with lamb whereas with beef mince it's cottage pie?

Pure laziness. In the time it took to fry the onion and veg, you could fry some beef and have a fresh decent meal rather than some processed crap out of a can. If i was going to be that lazy one night I'd rather buy a take away. No point in cooking something if you haven't made it yourself.

The end result looks very plastic; this is hardly good cooking, tinned mince, vegetables frozen and canned? yuk where are we in the States?
I can do better than this and my wife says I cannot cook lol

Sadly this Tv series was the end of Delia's TV Career. After years of stressing the importance of fresh home cooking, she gave up and did this product placement cookery book. you went across several supermarkets picking up her endorsed ingredients, to create what was supposed to be and easy dish. Sadly no one was going to buy into the idea that tinned meat and frozen mash was the way forward. Her works prior to this are brilliant and I still use her books for a lot of things.

I can’t agree that this spelt the end for her. She had already understood that her type of teaching approach to TV was now considered old hat and that TV execs would only make entertainment cookery shows usually with wise-cracking celebrity chefs.
This series was made so Delia could at least try to reach out to busy people and to encourage them to attempt a more healthy food prep approach than living off endless takeaways and very highly processed foods.
I use a good few of these shortcuts to this day, including ready chopped frozen veg, onions, and good quality tinned stewed steak etc.
