ima WV boy born n raised. I drive 18- -wheeler over the road. there is NOTHING BETER than seeing that sign that say Welcome to Wild N Wonderful West Virginia
When I was in basic, ALL I could think about was being back in West Virginia. I missed my friends, I missed my family, but for some reason; I missed being in the mountains more than anything.. Driving across the Highland Scenic Highway, feeling the breeze up on Spruce Knob, the sunlight glares off of the trees across all the hills and mountains, the slow constant sound of the waters, the fresh air up in Pocahontas and Pendleton county... I'm glad im back home tbh!
When I was serving in Germany had 2 pictures up in my wall locker. One was a shot of the mountains from a hilltop in Nicholas county and the other was a 3 picture panorama of Coal River taken from the deck of my parents house in Kanawha county. My roomies wanted to know why I didn't have any pics of girlfriends or whatever there. That's all I needed to make me miss home.
Harriet Valentia - This beautiful song is sung with passion and love for "her home" by the singer and composer, Kathy Mattea. I admire the tribute this song represents -- no doubt the feeling of all residents of this remarkable state, that must make anyone a native of the state homesick when they are living anywhere else. I can see why the West Virginians want to "go back home," whenever they have roamed to one of the several states bordering on the state, or beyond. This is truly the "State Anthem," and the beauty of Kathy Mattea's singing is full of "heart" and "love of home!!!"
I remember you singing this song with Tim O'Brien two years ago during a workshop at Grey Fox Bluegrass Fest. My dad and his family are all from WV, so it's nice to hear you sing it again.
Years ago I heard Hazel Dickens in concert with Ron Thomason. Hazel and Ron did a duet version this song using a much slower tempo. Most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Would love to hear a slowed down version with or without the duet.
Jeff Taylor Ron was my freshman English teacher. We had no idea who he was back then. Turns out we were reading Romeo and Juliet with a bluegrass legend. The things he said about music back then are finally making sense today.
Great song! You have always remembered your roots here in WV. And your coal mining grandpappys' would be soooo very proud of you! Keep up the pickin' and singin' and working for the safety of the miners.
@@larrym.johnson9219 So sorry that you never got to know him and he never got to share his tales with you. Hopefully some family members were able to tell you some stories about him. My Dad lost some very good friends in the mines. They are a 2 edged sword, supply a living and can take your life at the same time.
@@SandyToes75 There is no one of my grandfather generation around any longer, he was killed in the mine when my Mother was small and later her mother remarried, when my Mother moved to Ohio for work where I was born, so all the history was lost, she passed a way heart attack when I was young, before she passed she made certain that my Roots were in WV and also her Mother my grandma always called WV down home. I am proud of WV and her people and Proud to be an Appalachian American . I am glad that we share that! God bless you and yours!
@@larrym.johnson9219 Oh heavens! My heart goes out to you. Such loss. Do you know the town where your Grandpa lived? Where your Momma was born? While you have memories, you might want to write down some of them for future generations? Then others won’t have the questions you have about their family. Just a thought. Hugs.
Great song , Kathy well done , Hazel Dickens was great in the movie Matwan Her role in the movie was from the heart , a great movie for any one who likes industrial history
I've been in exile in Texas the past 23 years. One Texan axed me - when are you going to consider yourself a Texan? Answer: The 25th of F in NEVER! Montani Semper Liberi
West Virginia country roads are being blocked off by a billion dollar greedy cooperation. Old dirt roads (country roads) that are old country routes (on the maps) are being blocked by a cooperation that ownes thousands of acres all over West Virginia. West Virginian's (locals) all over the state are trying to fight with petitions, however, the billion dollar company is strong eneough that they are getting by with this. Roads are vanishing from online maps and residents all over the state are angry. It will take the outpouring of the public to demand these roads to stay open to everyone. This billion dollar company is breaking the law and they are not being stopped, help us stop the blocking of dirt roads (old country routes), in West Virginia. Contact our elected officials and tell them this is unexeceptable and that the public sees what they are allowing to happen to West Virginia. If not, soon, West Virginia will be the home of gated roads.
Lets Get Real Folks ----------Ms Kathy Mattea is just another "has been music maker"from Nashville which is :"her" home. Not West Virginia !!!!! And We hope she stays in Nashville !! The last time she was in West she cost many coal miners their jobs by her protesting West Virginia Coal.

Your opinion.... stupid as it is, is VASTLY outnumbered by the likes.
Geez..... with that knowledge and insight its no wonder you have ZERO subscribers.. And let's see, this video has over 55k viewers ? Hmmm..
I doubt coal miners lost their jobs because of her. It was because utilities are switching to cheaper natural gas.
