  • In this tutorial I show you how to build a planter box, to hang off of a deck railing, made out of Cedar and steel. I needed a place close to the kitchen to keep all of my Basil that I grew from last year's seeds.

    I've used frame strapping bent into shape to hang home-built boxes. Works nice and has lots of holes already. I paint it so it doesn't look like galvanized strapping.

    Well, this is the first video I've seen of yours. It was great. I can't make the project at all myself, but I thought everything was great in it. The instruction was easy enough for a beginner, the editing was just the right amount of pace to help me understand as a beginner, but I can see I would enjoy your instruction even as I grew in skill. Cheers!

    I like the way it was hung. We are using old wood cd storage racks and wondered how to hang them .

      Wm. Walker Co. That's ok! Well I planned it all out, but Ive actually been planning a bit of a youtube show that will be a better use of time, and will be very fun to make and will involve more people and put to use my collection of inspiring youtube videos or whatever inspirational stuff of people making stuff! Aim very high, and then rein back your ideas so they are more practical, I say. Here's a photo of the guitar I would have made though! facebook.com/bodgefabrications/photos/a.664182066964379.1073741828.664140546968531/846848138697770/?type=1&theater

    I did a similar project for my apartment a short time ago. Except it has solid walls to put the plants in the box directly instead of pots. I also used screws to support everything instead of glue and nails. I'm curious how this will hold up over the long run but it looks great.

    • @wmwalkerco
      @wmwalkerco  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It still seems to be holding up. The steel is rusted like I anticipated but the cedar and joints are still solid. It still holds potted plants. Did you use glue with your screws? I'm a belt and suspenders kinda guy.

  • @jjc6776
    @jjc6776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like what you did but I feel the weight of your plants dependent on 4 screws might not be so cool. Maybe should have had them bend underneath? Just a thought

  • @tfossum11
    @tfossum11 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great project idea and video! On a safety note: I suggest your viewers clamp those metal bars when drilling them. Doing so without is a great way to get hurt, especially on a drill press.

    Why the tapered box if it is hanging on a straight rail?

    • @wmwalkerco
      @wmwalkerco  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why not? A) I liked how it looked, aesthetically, and B) It saved on materials since I was using leftover stock and didn't have a whole lot left. You could certainly make it square if you like though.

    seems a tad heavy relative to the support. may want to add a 3rd support down the middle.

    • @wmwalkerco
      @wmwalkerco  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a bad idea, but its been holding up fine over the years so far.

    How long do you think this will last? You’re screwing in from the top. With water and weather won’t the screws come out in a few years?

    • @wmwalkerco
      @wmwalkerco  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I used cedar they should hold up. It's been a few years and they are still holding up great

      They sell this at Lowe's, Home Depot, tractor Supply, Rural King, most hardware stores... in the US at least. This isn't a specialty material you'd need to find at a welding shop or metal supplier.
