I've been looking to build some rail planters myself. Nice job. Everyone should be careful applying stain or finish like this that isn't food safe or free from chemicals. If you're growing vegetables the soil/plant can absorb the toxic chemicals used in the standard stains or finishes.

Great project. what if you wanted to make a really long box - like 4 or five feet. What would you do differently?

The cedar fence pickets can be kinda flexible in longer lengths, so I'd add spacers inside the box to give it extra stability.

Can these flower boxes be used on a more rounded metal railing?

You need something to drill into to attach the french cleat bracket on the back, so I'm not sure a metal railing would work.

To make the french cleat are you cutting the 1x4 down the middle? Or just the end?

    • @TheHandymansDaughter

Down the middle. That way you have enough wood on both sides to predrill the countersink holes for the screws.

@@TheHandymansDaughter Thank you for the reply. I guess I was confused by what your website says, making it seem like we need two 1x4s for each planter box.
"Cut the 1×4 cedar board into pieces that are a few inches smaller than your planter boxes. You’ll need two for each box. Then adjust your table saw angle to 45 degrees, and cut the edge off both pieces."

@@RandyL86 Ah, gotcha. You could use one board and cut it down the middle, or two boards and cut it at the edge. It just depends on how much space you have on the railing to drill into. I've used both sizes, and they're pretty much the same.

Is it OK to use indoor nails?

    • @TheHandymansDaughter

I recommend using stainless steel nails for outdoor projects, especially with cedar. Indoor nails can rust and leave discoloration that drips down from the holes.

What would you call the decorative hardware if I were to ask for it in a store?

Chris Haas they look like 2”x2” L-brackets that spray painted black.

Hi. I am in Seattle too. What do you call the inserts you used and where did you buy them from?

How long is your planter box and what's the insert called?
