To impress you even more, the drummer Larnell Lewis was called 2 days before this shoot to see if he could play, unprepared for the recording he agreed. The next day he was on a plane and flying in, knowing only 3 songs, he laid down 9 tracks over the next 3 days for the DVD recording and was THIS precise and passionate with his playing. Pretty incredible!! Check out Shofukan by these guys as well, another great one.
Basically most of the band had not heard most of the music which specifically was written for these few gigs and recording sessions and just a few short rehearsals were scheduled a few days prior to these sessions. On the dvd you can find I believe 2 more alternate keyboard solo’s for Lingus by Cory Henry. This was by far the best one. BTW, this was recorded at Kytopia in Utrecht, the Netherlands. A creatieve workspace set up by an artist called Colin Benders (aka Kyteman) and his dad. If you want to try something different again then look up Kyteman HipHop Orkest - Afscheidsconcert on TH-cam. Don’t be wary of the hiphop moniker, yes there is some rapping involved but it is actually pretty good.
I’m old enough, 68 years old, to have been around when the electric jazz/ fusion Era in New York began. I went on to be a keyboard player and I treasure that music because it was the soundtrack of my life as a young man. When I listen to young musicians like this it makes me infinitely happy and inspired. What a legacy The music of that era, “ “Fusion music” must have to inspire the young virtuosi on this piece. The band leader, Bassist Michael League He’s a brilliant composer and arranger and Corey Henry is from another planet on those keyboards. That band has a lot of players who have toured with Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Stanley Clarke, Kirk Franklin, Ari Hoenig, Roy Hargrove, David Crosby, and Snoop Dogg. These young musicians are Heavy duty. What excites an old musician like myself is the fact that there are so many wonderful young musicians with so much skill and a lot of heart. Makes me confident that music is timeless and that Music is in good hands for the future.
Hey Ricardo, I think that’s my favourite comment ever left for one of my videos. Yes, absolutely, music is timeless and is done for the joy of it. Those of us that are musical in any way will always gravitate towards genuine, inspirational music like this because we know much pleasure the players themselves are getting just from playing. Thank you for watching and commenting. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The utter joy and looks of “ Woooow “ on your face are pure gold. You can listen to this 20 times in a row and pick out grooves and subtle things each time. And to think the band “leader” started this ensemble because he couldn’t get in with the ones at the school he was at. Insane.
I first saw this same Lingus video two days ago, and since then I’ve been watching various reaction vids because it is very enjoyable to see people’s genuine first reaction. I like your vid. What amazes me about this performance is you know the moment when Corey begins his solo, the music becomes transcendental....you can feel the energy move into the subconscious where all of the musicians (and listeners) are drawn into (IMHO) the spiritual conversation between Corey Henry and Larnell Lewis. As the solo builds, the conversation takes off like a jet fighter with the afterburners lit...and everyone is along for the ride... To me, this is one of the greatest examples of musical conversation in the moment. The energy is still floating through space/time.
SO glad Larnell Lewis gets his credit! I don't know him, never met him, but, as a musician, I think the fact that he hasn't received every award on the planet is proof positive that jazz musicians have been left out in the cold for decades. He's a humble, brilliant musician who is more than willing to share his techniques with anyone who is willing to listen, which, to me, is proof positive of his genius. Sharing music for the sake of music is, to me, the purest form of love. And that is all.
Revelation! After few weeks filled completely with extreme metal I'm finding THIS. Awesome piece of music... Smart, beautiful, as complicated as it should be, balanced. I didn't realise that I need it probably until second or third note has sounded. I'm simply hungry for some more of this stuff right now. Thanks for this video Jim. You might also like artists such as Lettuce, Louis Cole (and his band Knower), Jacob Collier, Vulfpeck, Anomalie and Moonchild if you are into this genre. A lot of people that do these reaction videos express that they "think" that much of this music is "improvized". It is not. These guys can play their material JUST THE SAME on every outing. Snarky Puppy is TRULY a professional band/orchestra!! YOU stated that this is music of "the highest order". You don't create music of the "highest order" without rehearsing until it's just right. These people DO that!!! What they DON'T do is just improvize on the fly. To say that is to discredit their musicianship.
Oh Lordy, did I say that? It’s a long time since I made this video so I apologise…. I absolutely know how much hard work goes into making something sound amazing like this, but I also know that the top jazz musicians like Miles Davis etc improvised all over the place. I wasn’t trying to discredit these guys at all.
@@JimNewstead THANK YOU so much for responding, bro. I'm a self-taught bass player. Been playing since I was 15. I'm 62 now. Haven't had much of anything in the way of instruction. But I've been listening to music ALL my life. And I can't play like most of THE bassists out there. Not even close. What I do have is... what I've been BLESSED with is a really good ear. I can hold a strong groove. Improvisation (to my understanding) is when I feel something to throw into the mix. And I don't KNOW what it is that I'm doing!!!! But it fits well in the music. Just want to again say, THANK YOU for responding. Especially, so quickly. I truly do appreciate that. God bless you, Jim.
@@nathaniellollis3868 It is important to note, though, that there are improvised sections within the song, most notable of which is Cory Henry's solo on the keyboard

hey jim, check out polyphia - G.O.A.T
I prefer this song at x1.25 speed
Actually, it goes mental about half way through, haha. Crazy stuff
